Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - Brand New

“and even if her plane crashes tonight,
she’ll find some way to disappoint me,
by not burning in the wreckage;
or drowning at the bottom of the sea.”

im a girl.. but i change the lyrics so its directed at a guy instead. :p

Seventy Times 7 - Brand New

“is that what you call a getaway?
well tell me what you got away with,
cause i’ve seen more spine in jellyfish,
i’ve seen more guts in eleven year old kids.
have another drink and drive yourself home,
i hope there’s ice on all the roads,
and you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt,
and again when you’re head goes through the windshield.”

i fucking love that verse.

Maxwell | 12/13/2008, 2:31 am EST

“Famous Blue Raincoat” is a song written by Leonard Cohen to a version of himself. It is neither angry (more melancholy, slightly bitter) nor a love song in the traditional (or any real) sense.

crzj | 11/29/2008, 7:16 pm EST

Hollywood Undead “Black Dahlia”

fuck off | 11/26/2008, 6:44 pm EST

best angry song ever

XJellyBeanX | 9/8/2008, 2:08 pm EST

I happen to think Seethers “F**k Me Like You Hate Me” is a fantastic angry love song! Also Apocalyptica’s “I Don’t Care” is also pretty good…although honestly not real sure what the song is supposed to be about (The video is no help in figuring it out), but it seems like it would fit. And I think someone said Candlebox’s “You” love that song too…Breaking Benjamins “Breath” would fit as well…

Now I love Three Days Grace…and yes I hate Everything about you is an angry song…but I think that it is to vague to be an angry love song…it is more about relationships in general…love ones yes…or perhaps about a child hating a parent…etc…however it is angry nontheless.

I think this list needs to be a lot longer than 20 songs…cause there are just so many good ones…new ones, and of course the classic ones…and yes Dylan should be on this list more than once!

Three Days Grace - “I Hate Everything About You”
definitely should be on this list…now that’s an angry love song

Anonymous | 12/6/2007, 4:39 pm EST

The guy who made the Alanis Morissette comment… I disagree… actually its the best damn song on this pathetic list.

Oh… and Fiona Apple. Almost all her songs are super angry!

mikesboy | 6/28/2007, 12:21 am EST

‘fast as you’ by dwight yoakum is a stinger for that ho sharon stone. ‘the one i love’ has to be the ultimate sarcastic ‘love’ song out there.

rob | 6/27/2007, 1:16 pm EST

“cry me a river” by justin timberlake ? why not? i know its a pop song which isnt very well received by rs but it is a cool song and all about revenge

Ancien | 6/27/2007, 7:17 am EST

Dylan’s Positively 4th Street. Honorable mention to Elvis Costello’s humorous angry love song lines, like “I said ‘I’m so happy I could die.’/She said ‘drop dead’ and went off with another guy./That’s what you get for chasing after visions.”

Don Cooney | 6/27/2007, 5:47 am EST

Angry love songs? Hmm - the Elliott Smith Catalog.

Said Shirazi | 6/26/2007, 4:28 pm EST

Husker Du, “Never Talking To You Again.”

Honcho | 6/26/2007, 4:13 pm EST

Or, what about Dylan’s “Dirge,” which begins “I hate myself for lovin’ you and the weakness that it showed” and gets angrier from there?

Honcho | 6/26/2007, 4:07 pm EST

Don’t forget this one from Dylan: “When we meet again, introduced as friends, please don’t let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world.”

Stooven | 6/26/2007, 4:01 pm EST

How ’bout Hank Williams’ “Your Cheatin’ Heart”?

The following aren’t classics, but recommended:

“I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man” by Prince

“Fuck You, Lucy” by Atmosphere

“A Mind Of Her Own” and “When They Really Get To Know You They Will Run” by Pedro The Lion

Just about anything by Lou Barlow (even if it’s about J Mascis)

“Caught Out There” by Kelis

“You’re The One” by Dwight Yoakam

Husker's Ghost | 6/26/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Sinead’s cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2U is one of the least bitter love songs in the world!

The subject wants to reconcile, and is longing for the love lost. A far cry from bitterness.
You may wish to listen to it again.

I think One qualifies for sure.

“And I can’t be holding on, for what you’ve got, when all you’ve got is hurt.”

Bono mentioned the AIDS son to father conversation as something “it could have been about” a few years after he wrote it. Don’t know that qualifies as what its about or not, if it came to him much much later

But I think So Cruel when I think of a song of real hurt by them.

Dardo | 6/26/2007, 2:59 pm EST

My gosh, the RS staff is including “One” in every list they make!

One is not about a father telling his son he has aids

helloooo | 6/26/2007, 2:39 pm EST

Attention Rolling Stone:

“Angry” is not the same as “Sad”!!

Most of these you named would be SAD love songs, not ANGRY!!

Paul Pierce | 6/26/2007, 1:49 pm EST

hahahahaha. “One” is about a son telling his father he has AIDS. Hahahahhaha. Rollingstone is so WITH IT!

Mack | 6/26/2007, 1:26 pm EST

“There’s No Home for You Hear Girl” may be The White Stripes’ best angry love/break up song. You almost feel bad for the girl when you listen to its viciousness.

And for the person suggesting, “How Do You Sleep” by Lennon, that song is actually about Paul McCartney.

redd | 6/26/2007, 1:06 pm EST

Bart Himself | 6/26/2007, 12:34 pm EST

Shame by Randy Newman from bad love. Mean to his younger girlfriend and shouting to his back up singers to shut up. No way you can have sympathy for the singer at this moment.
And, my American friends, from Holland, Andre Hazes with the beautiful Zeg Maar Niets Meer (Don’t say anything anymore). Google or i-tunes it!

Antennas to Heaven | 6/26/2007, 12:30 pm EST

All of Okkervil River’s “Black Sheep Boy” Such an angry love-concept album.

Bob Mould: Stop Your Crying

…is just the tip of the iceberg for bitterness and love, clashing into fury. Bob Mould should own this list.
more..
hanging tree, disappointed, black sheets of rain, it’s too late, poison years, whichever way the wind blows.
c’mon RS! You gotta give it up for Bob!

philbus | 6/26/2007, 12:15 pm EST

I guess it’s too late but Married With Children by Oasis could’ve easily figure on that list.

lolita | 6/26/2007, 11:54 am EST

come pick me up- ryan adams, for sure should have made the list

francbroc | 6/26/2007, 11:51 am EST

francbroc | 6/26/2007, 11:48 am EST

I’m so fed up with Bob Dylan. Why do people always have to refer to him? Give us something fresh instead!!

Positively 4th Street
Sooner or Later (One of us must know)
I Don’t Believe You
Most Likely You Go Your Way
Fourth Time Around
Just Like a Woman
She’s Your Lover Now

Here's a few | 6/26/2007, 11:30 am EST

“The Dead Part of You” by American Music Club … obscure but a good example of an angry love song … “The price of your soul’s worth less than the cab fare / that gets you home before the living end.”

“Thumbtack” by Bob Mould is another good one. Mould probably had several others ….

“The World Has Turned And Left Me Here” by Weezer ….

Baked Chocodile | 6/26/2007, 11:20 am EST

Idiot Wind for certain should be at or near the top of the list. How about “Your Time is Gonna Come” - Led Zep?

Gorno Music | 6/26/2007, 11:12 am EST

I need someone a person to talk to
Someone whod care to love
Could it be you could it be you
Situation gets rough then I start to panic
Its not enough its just a habit
Hey kid your sick well darling this is it
You can all just kiss off into the air
Behind my back I can see them stare
Theyll hurt me bad but I wont mind
Theyll hurt me bad they do it all the time
Yeah yeah they do it all the time
I hope you know this will go down
On your permanent record
Oh yeah well dont get so distressed
Did I happen to mention that Im impressed
I take one one one cause you left me and
Two two two for my family and
3 3 3 for my heartache and
4 4 4 for my headaches and
5 5 5 for my lonely and
6 6 6 for my sorrow and
7 7 for no tomorrow and
8 8 I forget what 8 was for and
9 9 9 for a lost God and
10 10 10 10 for everything
Everything everything everything

Scott | 6/26/2007, 11:11 am EST

I have a hard time seeing Positively 4th Street as an angry love song. It was a very pointed attack at the folk community and in particular Irwin Silber, who had written his “Open Letter to Bob Dylan” in Sing Out magazine. It is truly an angry song, but perhaps not a love song.

thepatientfearegret | 6/26/2007, 11:05 am EST

Allen and the Stripes should not be on that list.

Vandefruits | 6/26/2007, 10:51 am EST

I agree with a lot of Dylan-comments on this list of reactions, but am very surprised that nobody mentions: I don’t believe you (she acts like we never met). Nobody will ever be able to top Bob of the top of this list! Hans

Gregorio | 6/26/2007, 10:36 am EST

Idiot Wind- Bob Dylan
Your Cheatin’ Heart - Hank Williams

bas | 6/26/2007, 10:28 am EST

dylan is the master of the angry love song! The top10 should be full of Dylan songs..
Idiot wind
Most likely you go your way, I go mine
Ballad in Plain D
Abandoned Love
heart of mine
and many many more

Dan Molloy | 6/26/2007, 10:27 am EST

“You’ll never know the hurt I suffered, nor the pain I rise above”

Yeah, got to be Idiot Wind…

Grasshopper | 6/26/2007, 7:44 am EST

It´s not well known enough to make any sort of list, but if you need an angry, bitter lovesong, check out the old blues “V-8 Ford” by Willie Love. Here´s a few quotes for you:
“…to come down and dig your grave
and bring me my pick an shovel
so I can shove that in your face…”
“…Now when you join your insurance
you´d better make it sick and accident too
you keep messin´ with me girl
you know somethin´ might happen to you…”
“…I´m gonna bring the doctor baby
gonna bring the undertaker too
all three of us will be waiting to see
what get become of you…”
And the chorus say that he´ll be at her burial, riding in his V-8 Ford.
Now if someone dedicated that song to me, I would probably stay at home for the next week or so…
I´m not sure I would be that bothered if my ex dedicated U2:s “One” to me…I wouldn´t exactly be looking over my shoulder when I was out walking…

Alkaline Trio- Good F*cking Bye

Bangers-N-Mash | 6/26/2007, 3:08 am EST

all I have to say is….

“You’ve got a lot of nerve, to say you are my friend”

“You’re an idiot babe, it’s a wonder you can even feed yourself”

“I don’t even care who you’ll be waking with tommorrow, ’cause mama you’ve been on my mind”

“…and you ache just like a woman, but you break, like a little girl”

Dylan was the master. Costello comes in at a respectable second.

U2 Fan | 6/26/2007, 2:48 am EST

“One” is hardly an ‘angry love song’.

Stones Fan | 6/26/2007, 2:45 am EST

“Dead Flowers” is most certainly NOT a Townes Van Zant song, its Rolling Stones, thru and thru….do your homework my overly confident friend. I’m a Big Lebowski fan too, but don’t assume.

But anyway, a better ‘angry love song’ from the Stones would be “Stupid Girl” (1966)….and a WAY better ‘angry love song’ from Dylan would be “Positively 4th Street” (rather than “Don’t Think Twice….”)

Gonzalo | 6/26/2007, 1:23 am EST

I’m agree with some of the people that posted, Bob Dylan was the absolute master when to write angry love songs, It’s just amazing his hability to sintetize an awfull and heart-breking situation like a divorce, entire Blood on the Tracks will be a very good option, and Andres Calamaro’s Flaca was wonderfull too, I know you ignore this great argentinean song-writter and composer, but he is very famous in my country and a superstar and dedicated an entire album named Honestidad Brutal(Cruelty Honesty) to his separation from his wife Monica, an excellent album, hear this and, maybe, some of his songs figure on this very well list.

Jack | 6/25/2007, 8:57 pm EST

‘know’ how to breathe.

Idiot myself.

Jack | 6/25/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Idiot Wind should’ve topped this list.

“You’re an idiot babe, it’s a wonder that you still no how to breathe.”

Pretty damning I would’ve thought.

abandonedstation | 6/25/2007, 8:43 pm EST

yeah, it’s kind of early to put on a week old white stripes song.

so let’s replace it with a slightly older white stripes song:

‘Truth Doesn’t Make a Noise’ - De Stijl

hooray! But why in god’s name didn’t ‘We’re in this Together’ by NIN make it?

Neil Young - Down by the River

Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale

THE WHITE STRIPES don't | 6/25/2007, 6:14 pm EST

make the same song everytime they make a record, mr. NICKELBACK are 1000X better than the white stripes. In twenty years nickelback will be recalled as this generation’s motley crue, a band that sold a ton of records yet had very little talent. The stripes will still be respected.

AND… why is “your cheatin’ heart” not on this list?

fleetwood mac’s non-presence is pretty lame.

and sadly, I have to admit I think “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson kinda sorta might possibly perhaps belong on the list.

AL | 6/25/2007, 5:56 pm EST

Roy Orbison “Only The Lonely” - 4ever

Skullfreak | 6/25/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Where is ‘I wanna seduce your cornhole’ by Neil Young??? Provocative, yet intimate

Marc | 6/25/2007, 5:53 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson - since youve been gone. (hey, its fits the topic and the song goes straight to the point.

Smile Empty Soul - For You (Great song off there self titled, download it people)

fellini8 | 6/25/2007, 5:39 pm EST

I think it’s a little early for a week old song from the White Stripes to make the list, even if it is a good song. No Fiona Apple? Take your pick…she’s got a lot of great angry love songs…how bout Get Gone?

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:29 pm EST

I always thought The Cure’s alt.end was by far the most angry love song I’ve ever heard.

I’m shocked a Pavement song wasn’t on here. Something obscure like Baby Yeah!

KPZ | 6/25/2007, 5:28 pm EST

The Clarks “Better Off Without You”

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:27 pm EST

what about good bye my lover?

Moniker A | 6/25/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Whatyousayin - #5 contains the following opening lyric:

“So you wanted to take a break/ slow it down some/have some space/fuck you to/ give me my money back/ I want my money back, you bitch”

As far as “angry” goes, I’d say that passes.

Donald | 6/25/2007, 5:17 pm EST

“Go Your Own Way” — Fleetwood Mac

Steve | 6/25/2007, 5:08 pm EST

I refuse to take this list seriously at all without at least one song by NIN (Somewhat Damaged? Something I Can Never Have?) or Pearl Jam (Rearviewmirror?). Too many songs on here for being well-known, when there are much better (and more bitter) songs out there. In all truthfullness, there is just way too many to narrow down to a 20 song list.

Steve | 6/25/2007, 5:01 pm EST

Wow, this is a god awful list.

THE WHITE STRIPES?

Give me an F’n break.

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:00 pm EST

“LIPSTICK VOGUE” by Elvis Costello.

The Line “Sometimes I feel like love is just a tumor/You’ve got to cut it out” pretty much sums it up.

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 4:58 pm EST

POSITIVELY 4TH STREET

44-DDs | 6/25/2007, 4:55 pm EST

yeah he does JON….way off. It is called the blues, you might consider educating yourself musically instead of thinking you know what you are talking about.

Billy Braggington | 6/25/2007, 4:53 pm EST

This is a pretty weak list. If you want to hear a REALLY pissed off song about lost love… check out “Your Dictionary” by XTC.

Billy Braggington | 6/25/2007, 4:53 pm EST

This is a pretty weak list. If you want to hear a REALLY pissed off song about lost love… check out “Your Dictionary” by XTC.

Benjamin Cuthrell | 6/25/2007, 4:52 pm EST

oh…and what about positively 4th street? It never says, but I always felt it was about a woman.

Benjamin Cuthrell | 6/25/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Smile is by far the most pissed. But don’t think twice…. is the most bitter. I mean nothing’s even close.

Jon | 6/25/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Jack White steals all his riffs, lyrics & such.

wordy-turdy too-step | 6/25/2007, 4:50 pm EST

“you dont know what love is (you just do as your told)” has been around for a f*ckin week and it makes the list but “kiss off” by violent femmes is nowhere to be seen but in reality bites…

Seattle | 6/25/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I would not call “One” an angry love song.

Marc | 6/25/2007, 4:49 pm EST

Taking Back Sunday - MakeDamnSure

NICKLEBACK are 1000X better | 6/25/2007, 4:49 pm EST
