Ask A Rock Star: What’s Your Favorite Children’s Book or Movie?

6/25/07, 11:21 am EST

Yes, even those dudes from Mastodon read Shel Silverstein books once.

The Bravery frontman Sam Endicott:The Sandlot. It’s what every suburban kid dreams their life would be. Also it features the most brilliant move in the history of cinema, which is when the guy pretends to be drowning in order to kiss the hot lifeguard.”

Mastodon frontman Troy Sanders: “To this day, my favorite books are any and all things by Shel Silverstein. Truth, beauty and innocent cleverness shine with bright and wholesome purity. These are all classic. These are all amazing!”

Damone frontwoman Noelle Leblanc:The Nightmare Before Christmas was such a leap in the evolution of major motion animation and music. The combination of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton is classic. I don’t know anyone who would challenge that statement.”

The Oohlas frontwoman Ollie Stone: “I really really love Matilda by Roald Dahl, for obvious reasons. A young girl misunderstood and ignored by everyone in her life and breaks free to be happy. And she has special powers. And her best friend is named Lavender. So great!

Secret Machines drummer Josh Garza:The Wizard of Oz. This is a no-brainer, a prerequisite for all kids under 15. Also, Fantasia is a close second. Both of these movies made a comeback for me when I got to college and started doing pharmaceuticals.”

Hot Hot Heat singer Steve Bays:Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. When I was little I was obsessed with Pee Wee Herman and I dressed up as him for two consecutive Halloweens. He was like the 80’s Borat I guess.”

The Honorary Title frontman Jarrod Gorbel:The BFG by Roald Dahl; his writing still influences the way I speak today, so twisted yet poetic and completely original.”

Schoolyard Heroes frontwoman Ryann Donnelly: “Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a personal favorite. The art and poetry is both adorable and slightly disturbing. A classic.”

I used to read Penthouse for the articles (I swear, Mom). Maybe that’s why my rock star dreams were never realized. I lacked edu-mi-cation, apparently.

THE GOONIES-Do the truffle shuffle.

NYC Nate | 6/25/2007, 12:24 pm EST

Oh, and let it roll: I think that’s the berenstain bears, not the “Bernstein” bears. Unless you’re talking about a family of Orthodox Jews living in Park Slope, Brooklyn (or Five Towns, LI).

Who are these poeople?

NYC Nate | 6/25/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Now, looking back through the blog, I noticed that there’s a band called Schoolyard Heroes. (?!?) Please tell me that it’s a side project of Gym Class Heroes (actually DON’T tell me that) or Gym Class Heroes without that corny-ass rappist (not to be confused with rapist). Otherwise, the name kinda reminds us of an existing band’s name, doesn’t it? Not too clever, guys.

Hey NYC Nate, perhaps “S.Y.H.s” are like a lot of us others who have never heard of “Gym Class Heroes”. With all the bands popping up on a daily basis, similar names are bound to happen. If and when both of these bands hit the big time, then they can duke it out for nameing rights, but until then, sit back and relax. Jeesh!!!!

elias | 6/25/2007, 2:07 pm EST

i hate the fact that most of them are trying their darndest to sound cool

NYC Nate | 6/25/2007, 2:39 pm EST

One of the first things a band does when in the naming process is google their name and see how many other things with the same general theme pop up. It ain’t rocket science. I’m perfectly relaxed and poised. I’d just expect that when there’s another functioning, steadily touring band on the circuit with two of three of the same words in their name AND that third word is in the same vein (ie – high school) as the other band’s, that the band coming up second might defer. It’s just common sense. Oh, by the way, I’m going to see the Marble Temple Pilots tonight. Anyone else wanna go?

killyridols | 6/25/2007, 3:02 pm EST

I would Nate, but I already have tickets to go see Smashing Summer Squashs.

The greatest children’s book ever written is THE STORY OF FERDINAND by Munro Leaf. Nuff said. Heading to see Pearl Jelly now.
