The Return of the King: Elvis Presley Impersonators Infiltrate Emo, Blues Rock, and Hip Hop

6/22/07, 10:36 am EST

Yeah yeah yeah, three’s a trend, this is too easy … but: we’ve noticed a rash of random rock stars doing their best to shake it like The King lately. Pete Wentz makes a brief cameo as an Elvis impersonator in Gym Class Heroes’ new video for “Clothes Off!” Pharoahe Monch participates in an Elvis impersonation contest in the video for his catchy new track “Body Baby.” And Jack White has finally admitted those rumors that he’d be playing Elvis in a movie are true. “I just played Elvis Presley in this film with John C. Reilly a few weeks ago,” says White. After the nadir period of Elvis impersonation that followed that Nicolas Cage movie, we see a new golden age arriving.

Elvis was another Bubba from the backwoods of mississippi until m.g.m.got a hold of him. They made him look like Burt Lancaster. They gave him a chin, well cut nose and capped teeth….a movie star! He had dishwater blonde hair and they changed it to back so it would show up on the black’n'white movie of the day. They colored it so much that it became blue.

Elvis had grey hair in the 70’s and died it black. In the 50’s he had blonde/brown NOT grey.

Elvis IS and WAS the king, nobody can even compare to him, so it’s a thumbs down to any impersonaors. Take it from a real FAN ! I’m his #1 Fan. Love You Elvis xxx

This is so sad in a way because most of the impersonators are so bad. And none of them can do the 50’s when the music was really different & really hot. And why all the interest in the color of his hair? It’s all about the music. Lennon was the one who said: Before Elvis there was no one. But he’s wrong about Elvis dying after he went in the Army. What would Lennon know about it? Elvis did what he had to do & came back stronger than ever on more than one occasion!

    Jack White ftw!

It’s probably be a good thing if people started remembering Elvis and what he symbolizes (that rock and roll is supposed to be fun)…it’s sad that, in the mainstream, rock is almost exclusively used for whining, and any music intended for good times is some cheesy dance-pop-rap shit.

As John Lennon said “Elvis died the day he went in the Army”.

    Me | 6/24/2007, 3:39 pm EST

He ain’t the king of R&R, Little Ricvhard deserves that title!

    MW | 6/24/2007, 1:27 am EST

Elvis is, and will always be the king of rock and roll.

    trudy | 6/23/2007, 7:58 am EST

elvis is the king, no doubt about that… and fall out boy is a sucky band, no doubt about that. i do like jack white, though i can’t imagine him as elvis, but emo is a craze that will pass- the king would laugh if he was around to hear it.

    Cheesecrop | 6/23/2007, 7:52 am EST

    Not bad at all.

    cookee | 6/22/2007, 10:57 pm EST

the sky is blue, water is wet,the sun will always shine and women somtimes lie but the king of rock will never die….

    The Elvis

Recipe courtesy Peanut Butter & Co.

    Prep Time: 5 minutes
    Cook Time: 10 minutes
    Yield: 4 sandwiches

    Ingredients

    2 tablespoons butter, softened
    8 slices white bread
    1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
    1 large, ripe banana, sliced
    1/4 cup honey
12 slices bacon, Sauteed until crispy (optional)
    Preparation:

Spread the butter on 1 side of each slice of bread. On the other side of half of the slices spread peanut butter. Place banana slices on top of peanut butter. Drizzle honey over bananas. Place 3 bacon slices on top of the banana, then place the remaining buttered bread slices on top, butter-side-out.

Place sandwiches on a preheated grill pan or griddle. Flip them over when they become golden brown and crispy. When the sandwiches are browned on both sides, remove to plates. Slice in half and serve immediately.

    Thank you very much.

One of the reason Elvis died his hair black is because it had turned almost completely gray. You can see his gray hair in pictures of him taken in 1956. He has gray in his sideburns. He died his hair black right before he made Loving You in 57.

Elvis is the one who introduced rock n roll and R&B into the mainstream. But fuck that lil bitch from Fall Out Boy. Emo is such a disgrace to the king.

Oops- I meant “no man can resist a woman with long hair…”

    stagefronttickets | 6/22/2007, 1:15 pm EST

Actually- another interesting bit of trivia about the King and his obsession with black hair- Priscilla’s hair was/is naturally brown. He also asked/told her to dye it black because he said “no man can resist long hair- long and jet black.” Not only will he always be in style, but also, I’m glad the younger generation is learning an appreciation for the King. www.stagefronttickets.com

Mojo Nixon said it twenty years ago: “Elvis is everywhere / Elvis is everything / Elvis is everybody / Elvis is still the King!”

    Stuporfly | 6/22/2007, 1:14 pm EST

Two lame impersonations in videos and a small role by Jack White is a “rash”? What the hell have I been applying all that ointment on?

    Ghost Mutt | 6/22/2007, 12:37 pm EST

The weirdest thing about Elvis for me is that he actually had blonde hair which he died black. Feckin’ bizarre considering how sought after blonde hair is

    john | 6/22/2007, 12:10 pm EST

    thats true…hes the king…end of story….

    BIT | 6/22/2007, 11:59 am EST

Elvis, like jeans, will always be in style.
