Former Beatles Storm The Charts, Lauryn Hill Possibly Eventually Releasing A New Album, And More

6/22/07, 9:08 am EST

  • Right now, songs by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and John Lennon can be found in the top 15 of the U.S. charts. McCartney is up there at Number 3 with his new album, Memory Almost Full; George Harrison and his fellow Traveling Wilburys took the Number 9 spot with the repackaged version of their two albums; the Amnesty International-benefiting album Instant Karma, which features major contemporary acts covering John Lennon tunes, came in at Number 15.
  • As the tenth anniversary of the release of Lauryn Hill’s debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill fast approaching, Sony Music continues to suggest that we’ll see a follow up to that record soon. Not that anything solid like a release date has been set.
  • The Smashing Pumpkins have released four different track lists for their much-anticipated forthcoming album, Zeitgeist. There’s the standard 12 track version of the album plus three other releases available at Best Buy, Target and iTunes respectively, each of which will each have a different bonus track. At least they aren’t pretending this reunion isn’t about money.
  • Both the American Idol people and Kelly Clarkson’s reps are denying the rumor that, in the wake of the cancellation of her own tour, Clarkson has been offered some kind of cameo spot on this summer’s American Idol tour.
  • Woody Allen will try his hand at directing opera this fall when he stages the Los Angeles Opera’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.” “I have no idea what I am doing, but incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in with enthusiasm,” Allen said of the project.
  • Jack White has decided to respond to the now ancient news story detailing his irate call to a Chicago radio DJ after she played the entirety of Icky Thump on air before its release date. “Jack White, the singer and songwriter, isn’t reacting to you,” the White Stripes frontman explained. “It’s the president of Third Man Records – our record label – calling you and asking for an explanation. (They reacted) like I called up and threatened to burn down the building or something, for God’s sake.”

People will be listening to the Beatles hundreds of years from now,who else can you say that about???

If the Pumpkins reunion is only about money, why are they charging just $20 for tickets to their residency shows AND allowing audience recording at all shows on their tour? It seems to me this is a record label decision, and SP know the true fans will just download the extra tracks – this is a band who released an entire album for free online, let’s not forget.

Woody Allen in Los Angeles? Say it isn’t so Woody….

abandonedstation | 6/22/2007, 12:08 pm EST

Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Lauryn Hill, White Stripes, Woody Allen, American Idol…

two of these things aren’t like the others, two of these things are not the same!

Give up? It’s American Idol… twice. Woody’s in a jazz band, so it’s still music news.

Just wait until The Beatles catalog is released on I-tunes, then there will be Beatles all over the top 40!

I’m amazed that there are that many people who bought the Willburys CD, who doesn’t have these already (they DID come out on CD the 1st time)

Does Jack White wear another jacket when he is “Label President” like Dr. Detroit?

jungleland | 6/22/2007, 12:17 pm EST

Smashing Pumpkins are an easy target (and they kinda suck)

love it. | 6/22/2007, 12:17 pm EST

The Pumpkins rule. It takes time for a legend to be fully recognized. As soon as the 90’s is brought back into some sort of fad, every artist will be copying the Pumpkins.

Megan | 6/22/2007, 12:27 pm EST

Twenty dollar concert tickets? Bootlegging allowed at all shows this tour? Machina II released over the internet? Yeah, it sure sounds like the Pumpkins are all about the money to me. Idiot.

Chuck | 6/22/2007, 1:25 pm EST

I just read the Pitchfork article you got the Pumpkins info from…can I just say Pitchfork are so full of goat shit. Sure, it is a bit strange to do the four albums thing, but plenty have done it before, and like someone mentioned, the fans are gonna find a way to download those elsewhere. Everyone should just ease up on Billy and Co.

ernie | 6/23/2007, 1:26 am EST

people are totally overreacting about the 4 albums. why is the blame being put on billy and the band when this is easily a decision taken by the record company to squeeze out as much money as they can out of the deal. does it make too much sense?

fisho69 | 6/25/2007, 4:11 am EST

you are 100% spot on cure58, not many bands come close, and never will. And time will show as that this will be true.

poor ppl | 7/6/2007, 10:27 pm EST

smashing pumpkins new album is crappy they lost the umpth they used to havr…its all electronic sounding too…..such a shame! beatles kickass! no one did it better…if they did it now they wud prolly be doing everything from reggae to folk! they dared to be different n did everything great!

O'Leary's Cow | 7/9/2007, 11:00 am EST

The multiple SP versions is most definitely a record company decision. If you think about the album’s title though, these multiple (ripoff) versions could be looked at as a true reflection of the times, and a great joke.

Typical Rolling Stone BS….do you guys remember when the Pumpkins released Machina II a two disc cd on the internet for free? Of course you dont…to be honest i havent read the magazine in years the focus on trends and the mtv shows are too much…

stone_phil | 8/27/2007, 11:30 pm EST

haha this stuff is great! Just because you don’t understand it or relate to it, it sucks ass. I remember many people not liking Adore, Machina, and Machina II. So what was expected this time? Billy writes about the way he feels about things, which most writers do. His metaphor’s can be complex, and at times, decieving. They make you reflect. I like the new album because I can relate to it. Just because others can’t, they hate it. So…should I hate them because I don’t relate to what they’re saying? Read some Aristotle sometime…Oh, and, ROCK ON Billy!
