The Battle Over the Next Bob Dylan Compilation

6/21/07, 12:43 pm EST

This morning the fine people at Columbia announced the release of a fifty-one track , three-CD Bob Dylan compilation. Some people might argue that such a collection is unnecessary. To them we say this: what about the “cloth covered case” and an “extended booklet of classic and rare Dylan imagery”?

The real hook, though: The label has launched a website for fans to vote on which songs they want included, claiming weakly that the final tracklisting will be “greatly influenced by impassioned fan lobbying.” The hardcore Dylan fans over at the Dylan Pool are already hoping to stuff the ballot box with their favorite obscure tracks. And, boy, are they obscure: “Solid Rock,” from Saved; the outtake “Girl on the Red River Shore”; the infamous one-off live version of “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts.”

Okay, you know where this is heading: let’s hear your suggestions.

I’m laughing at the first comment about Blond on Blond. There as nothing nasaly on that release or on Highway 61 Revisited. As far as i think, those two are beyond cricism, sort of like Pet Sounds, Dark Side of the Moon, Abbey Road, etc.

a very recent dylan fan | 8/29/2007, 10:40 pm EST

i have only recently started to get serious about bob dylan and started buying his stuff in the year. i have learned one thing though, when i compare and listen to his work and in particular as it relates to how he performs it, the late middle to older / present dylan beats the pants off the whiney, tinny, hollow, childish voice of recordings etc from live 1975 and before. what the heck is this idiocy about blonde on blonde being the best of his work or the best album of all time? its neither! its ok, but its not a classic (and I was around when it was released and was very aware of music and this shit never did a thing a for me! however, modern times, saved, oh mercy, and the like are true classics and worthy to present as offerings from a meister journeyperson artist, singer, musician, and composer. i guess i am saying that he has aged very well indeed. luck however was on his side when he was younger in order to establish him…a LOT of luck and even more goodwill from many others including john lennon.

birddogger | 8/24/2007, 2:04 pm EST

“Band Of The Hand”, the theme song to an obscure “Miami Vice” ripoff movie from 1986…currently unavailable on CD to my knowledge.

Plus, “Tight Connection To My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love)” and “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky” from 1985’s “Empire Burlesque”. Two very underrated tunes in his canon.

Joe | 8/20/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Who needs another compilation? We need unreleased songs: Girl on the Red River Shore, No Turning Back & Mississippi from Time Out of Mind sessions.

J | 6/25/2007, 9:20 am EST

Just give the albums Self Portrait and Dylan a good remix/remaster treatment and put them in super delux packaging. Wow, that would be swell!

Markus | 6/24/2007, 10:41 pm EST

I just thought about this. Brian F said that obviously the comp’s playlist was already set because it contained 51 tracks (an off-the-wall number). Maybe so, but what if they’re adding a preselected new bonus track to attract collectors, and the other 50 are done by a computer tally of voter selections. It’s possible, at least. Either way, no such thing as bad publicity.

ZWQT | 6/24/2007, 8:25 pm EST

I think the 3 CD comp is a great ideaa….can’t wait. Been a life-long (since 1965) Dylan fan and collector. Hopefully it will include single sides and tracks from various artists albums that have never been released on a Dylan US album.

You got this part wrong :
“The hardcore Dylan fans over at the Dylan Pool”…….no hardcore Dylan fans/collectors over at the Dylan Pool,…only idiots without a life.

But I agree, I’m not going to pay for another 3 disc set of songs - studio and live - that I already own. Columbia should finally bow to the real Dylan fans and release some of the songs in their vaults. We’re not suckers and are bored to death with box sets recycling the same old stuff.

has anybody pointed out the fact that the release and website say “51 tracks,” yet they are asking for suggestions?! This makes no sense– people, they’re already decided! They just want to build an advance buzz. It’s the same thing with some reality shows: “you, too, could be on the show… just go to our website and upload an audition video.” Then they cast LA models.

Actually this is a great move by Dylan’s marketing team. “I’m Not There”, the new Dylan biopic due to be released in late September or early October, will provide plenty of free publicity and help create massive interest among new and old fans. What better time to release a compilation?

Eediot! Wind | 6/22/2007, 5:12 pm EST

Worst of Compilation…didn’t Bob already do this with Self Portrait and Dylan? Any of the reggae tinged songs from Buddokan would fit in that comp. as well.

I happen to love quite a lot of his music, but if you were to compile tracks for such a collection, what would they be?

Eediot! Wind | 6/22/2007, 4:02 pm EST

4 or 5 ‘greatest hit’ compilations later, you’d think Columbia would come up with a decent theme for a compilation. How about this -

‘Famous Last Words’ (compiling some of his studio album closing numbers)

It Ain’t Me Babe
It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue
Desolation Row
Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands
I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight
Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You
Buckets Of Rain
Sara
Every Grain Of Sand
Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight
Shooting Star
Highlands
Sugar Baby
Ain’t Talkin’

Only 14 songs, but probably a double disc with so many lengthy songs.

I strongly suspect that Bob has little or nothing to do with such a compilation. It is a business move by the record company. As a fan, I’d love to see a rarities release.

But wait, why would I buy this anyway? I have all of Dylan’s stuff.

Louis the King | 6/21/2007, 6:59 pm EST

If you made a real Best Of it would take up about 15 CDs. That’s what’s so pointless about this. It’s like, pick your best vital organ and try to live without the rest.

perfectomix | 6/21/2007, 6:58 pm EST

One other thing:
Liner notes can often be interesting and valuable, but am I the only one who couldn’t care less about photos (rare or otherwise) and cloth-covered cases? I’m looking for music, not museum pieces. I’m growing tired of record labels thinking I’ll spend double for a pretty container.
Oh well. To each their own. Some people probably think liner notes are boring…

perfectomix | 6/21/2007, 6:53 pm EST

One thing I’m suspicious about: If they’re serious about this whole “fans deciding final tracklist” thing, then how is it they’ve already decided there will be 51 tracks - no more, no less?
I realize they’re not just gonna leave the *entire* thing up to the fans. Some tracks will be guaranteed for inclusion whether the fans like it or not, like Blowin’ In The Wind and Like A Rolling Stone. Not that most people would complain about those particular songs…Anyway, point is, pre-selecting a certain number of tracks for a certain number of discs will invariably affect the pool of songs to choose from in the first place. For example, someone (jokingly, I think) suggested making a collection of all his super-long songs, like Highlands, Desolation Row, etc. Obviously you couldn’t fit 51 songs of that length on 3 discs. And I realize that Columbia never said that they *wouldn’t* have some say in the final set. But this just smells of “hey, here’s a great way to hype up the umpteenth Dylan compilation” rather than what it’s meant to be seen as…

Jon | 6/21/2007, 6:49 pm EST

Coloumbia should stop doing stupid compilations and make a B-sides and rarities disc for Bob Dylan fans. I’m not big on the bootleg series because its like 3 discs a box and you have all the stuff already if you have his main catalog. Please put “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and “Positively 4th Street” on the same disc. I can care less for a compilation however. No offense to Dylan, but I just have all his classic albums, I don’t need them over again.

Brownsville Girl, it’s the only thing that makes my piles feel better.

Lonesome Suzy | 6/21/2007, 5:05 pm EST

He’s done some great duets over the years, with Patti Smith and Joan of course and Willie Nelson and Brian Wilson. How ’bout some of those?

the original roving gambler | 6/21/2007, 5:04 pm EST

all the songs Bob Dylan quoted as written by himself without quoting the original writers - man… that would be quite along list

Markus | 6/21/2007, 4:53 pm EST

abandoned station mentioned using some of Dylan’s epics. What about “Cross the Green Mountain” from the “Gods & Generals” soundtrack? Or the original 20+ minute long version of Highlands?

birddogger | 6/21/2007, 4:51 pm EST

“Tight Connection to My Heart”, “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky”, and “Emotionally Yours”, all from “Empire Burlesque”. Also, “Band Of The Hand”, theme song from an obscure “Miami Vice” rip-off movie dating back to 1986 or so.

The immortal shame | 6/21/2007, 4:48 pm EST

-The Man in Me (simply for it’s apt placement in The Big Lebowski)
-Up to me
-Desolation Row (From MTV unplugged album)
-Romance in Durango (Live 1975)
-A-Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall (Live 1975 again pure ass kickin version)
-Angelina
-Quit yer Low Down Ways
-Gospel Plow
-Cold Irons Bound
Pretty much the entire Rolling Thunder Review concerts kick more ass than George W. could ever wish to do in Iraq. And for all you Dylan haters, remember before Bob dylan arrived, rock n’ roll music consisted of “Love me do”-esque trite phoney crap. Dylan put meaning behind lyrics and created metaphoric meaning as it is used today. When he first became big in New York, his performances and subject matter were closely scrutinized by the “intellectual” set of New York’s high society. He put politics into his lyrics. No other Rock star has been scrutinized, critisized, idolized, and demonnized like Dylan. The amount of crap he’s put up with for simply performing his art is unmatched in any celebrity circle. He’s influenced all the greatest rock bands in the world (Hendrix, Beatles, Stones, U2, Dead, etc. etc. etc.) and continues to do so today after over 6 DECADES in the industry. 6 decades, bitches. Whenever your crappy indie flavor of the month has the staying power of 6 decades, then you can talk smack but until then, honor the legend, revere the first God of Rock, and keep the hating to yourself. Chances are, if you think Dylan sucks, you haven’t heard enough. Either that or you’re not listening.

“My Back Pages” from the 30th Anniversary Concert Album acoompanied with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Roger McGuinn- s super group better than the Wilburies!

“He Was A Friend of Mine” from the Bootleg Series Volume 7
God damn heart breaking.

“I Don’t Believe in You (She Acts Like We Never Met” Live 1966

“Delia” off of World Gone Wrong… one of the most underrated Dylan albums by miles

“Song for Woodie Guthrie” his first and one of his best works.

And I can’t go without saying “Stuck inside of Mobile…” it’s probably my favorite dylan song

And if they’re hoarding any Blonde on Blonde sessions recordings… it’s fucking criminal they haven’t released those yet.

I think they ought to have a compilation of covers of Dylan songs. Like The White Stripes take on “Outlaw Blues” live in Blackpool from their DVD, The Clash’s cover of “The Man in Me” from the Vanilla tapes in the 25th Anniversary of London Calling Pack, George Harrison’s “A Fool Such As I”, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s stellar take on “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, RATM’s decent “Maggie’s Farm” cover… idk you could do a really good compilation of just those.

Thunder On The Mountain | 6/21/2007, 4:03 pm EST

‘High Water’, ‘One More Cup Of Coffee’, ‘Little Maggie’, ‘Ain’t Talking’

abandonedstation | 6/21/2007, 3:56 pm EST

like some guy said, the ‘Brown Sugar’ cover.

If Bob really wanted to be a smartass, he’d have ‘em load the disc with his longest tunes. Stuff like ‘Ballad in Plain D’, ‘Desolation Row’, ‘Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands’, ‘Joey’, ‘Highlands’, etc.

Marty P. | 6/21/2007, 3:49 pm EST

How about the sound of Bob’s resperator when he breathed in the bat poop dust? That would be better than anything he tried to sing. Most overrated ‘artist’ in all music history, bar none. On this there can be no debate !!

Brian | 6/21/2007, 3:46 pm EST

its always funny all the people who are so angry with the fact that their life sucks that they want to get onto a “Bob Dylan news section” on the INTERNET and complain about something as mundane as their views of Bob Dylan….get a life people….

1. A hot wind blows thru these dirty trousers
2. Baby Jakob’s (voice sounds like Springsteen’s)
3. I’m tired and overrated
4. Baez can’t give head as well as Mitchell
5. Maybe I’ll learn to play an instrument well one day
