Indie Fave Panda Bear Blows Minds in NYC

6/19/07, 1:24 pm EST

The hottest concert ticket in New York last night was for a spectacular piece of performance art by Animal Collective’s Panda Bear (real name: Noah Lennox). Mr. Bear’s killer solo disc Person Pitch has gotten serious buzz in indie circles — and lots of play at Rock Daily HQ — and it’s one of best psychedelic-pop records so far this year. For over an hour, Lennox stood at his mixing deck, running through altered versions of cuts like “Comfy in Nautica.” Tripped-out projections - hippies making love on a rollercoaster, sharks circling in the sea - loomed large on a projection screen. As did Lennox’s shadow, which made it seem as if a ghost was playing behind the scrim.

I think Person Pitch is a very important album, and may stand as one of the better albums that this decade has had to offer. It is a beautiful work, and may really reach you if you open your mind to ambience and mood pieces. The harmonies and lyrics on the album are magnificent. Just amazing writing. I hope more people get to hear it and enjoy it as much or even more than I do.

I’m sorry, but Panda Bear’s solo career is so terrible. Person Pitch is so incredibly bland, full of nothing but vague noises and pounds and pounds of reverb.

Good thing Strawberry Jam is excellent. “For Reverend Green” alone more than makes up for his mess of a solo career.
