Genesis Fans Have Best Week Ever

6/19/07, 12:45 pm EST

For fans of Peter Gabriel and his former band Genesis, the past week must have seemed like 1978 all over again. For the first time in their careers, both artists just launched tours without albums to support, which means they’re digging deep into their catalogs and playing stuff they haven’t touched since the Carter Administration. Hey Peter, how about taking the next logical step next year and reuniting with Genesis? Check out their recent setlists after the jump.

Bongo head on the skins?
Pete wearing some make-up?
the lamb will rise again

J-Roo | 6/19/2007, 1:56 pm EST

PG: Kudos for NOT playing In Your Eyes.

The Spector Bob | 6/19/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Man, I forgot how crappy some of Gabriel’s songs are. I can’t imagine paying to sit through “On the air” or “DIY.” On the other hand, “The Rhythm of the Heat” sounds like a great opener. Doesn’t look like Gabriel is doing Genesis songs.

your mom | 6/19/2007, 2:07 pm EST

I don’t know ANY Peter Gabriel-era Genesis songs. And why do I only know the songs in the encore for Peter Gabriel?

Both of these set lists look like they suck.

Jim | 6/19/2007, 2:26 pm EST

Hey J-Roo,
He’s playing it as an encore-look closer.

sarah jane | 6/19/2007, 2:30 pm EST

J-Roo, it appears PG IS playing IYE, based on the above setlist.

Steve | 6/19/2007, 2:49 pm EST

I can’t wait for the Genesis shows in October, but I don’t know why they can’t change the setlist a bit from night to night like Gabriel is.

Or at least drop “Hold On My Heart.” Jesus, that’s an awful song. But “Ripples” should be pretty fucking awesome.

smarkarrow | 6/19/2007, 3:54 pm EST

Gabriel seems to be reaching way back and that is more than welcome. DIY and On The Air are highly unusual for him. They go back to the Fripp era of more guitar sound. Family Snapshot and Mother of Violence are even better. Best of all may be I don’t remember. All of Gabriel’s fans can’t be made happy. As far as Genesis, Fifth of Firth without Hackett, Great. OK, I will grant Hold On My Heart residency in the land of suck, but after listening to the Cinema Show, Duke’s Travels and Afterglow we could all use a pee break. So let those in love raise their lighters for four minutes while the rest of us shake off the dew and than run back back to the music.

killingfloor | 6/19/2007, 4:20 pm EST

What, no ‘Misunderstanding”? Jesus.

jungleland | 6/19/2007, 4:43 pm EST

I have to admit, my interest in Genesis is ONLY 1980 – 1986….actually, same for Peter Gabriel.

So I am against them all reuniting, ’cause I would not want to hear any of their songs

invisibletouch | 6/19/2007, 5:00 pm EST

Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock. Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Screw that poppy yuppie Genesis crap that “American Psycho” made fun of. WE NEED MORE PROGRESSIVE ROCK GENESIS!!! Granted, Gabriel can play whatever he wants, his catalog rocks. For those only into the 80’s stuff, go buy Yes’ 90125, Pink Floyd’s Momentary Lapse of Reason, and Asia and stay at home snorting your cocaine, trying on your Miami Vice suits and combing your business mullets. That was a weak era for great bands. They should play what made them great, no more wall street soundtrack nonsense.

Pants | 6/19/2007, 6:33 pm EST

C’mon Phil, Peter, et al., it’s the year of the reunion tour. Now’s the time. We don’t give a shit about Hold On My Heart or Sledgehammer…we want some Supper’s Ready action.

%%%%%% | 6/19/2007, 7:35 pm EST

no ‘games without frontiers’

jimd | 6/19/2007, 9:43 pm EST

Gabriel was the reason that Genesis was so unique. There are plenty of pop bands out there to choose from, but nothing can compare to the glory years with Hackett and Gabriel. Here’s hoping that they can find their way to regroup one more time for the loyal fans who would love to see them share a stage again.

Conrad | 6/19/2007, 10:38 pm EST

Genesis Sucks ans all of thier solo projects suck too

Martin | 6/20/2007, 4:00 am EST

I’m a huge PG fan (post Genesis) – but have you noticed how he now sings “Sledgehammer” through (what appears to be) gritted teeth during his latest concerts ? Poor bugger must be sick to bloody death of it by now !

David 22 | 6/20/2007, 9:30 am EST

It was reported that Gabriel backed out of the reunion because he didn’t want his career to go backwards. Now he turns around and does his own version of a “greatest hits” package tour. He should just join up with Genesis, then they can combine both catalogues with both bands and do a complete blow-out once and for all ala Yes circa 1989-90 with their Union tour.

bob pridden | 6/20/2007, 12:26 pm EST

j-roo: in your eyes is the closer. sorry.

after watching genesis on the vh1 rock honors (wtf??? why? how? nice promotion of your tour!) i’m convinced that i won’t be going to see them. total snoozeville. were there people actually singing along to ‘no son of mine’? i don’t get it. i mostly like all genesis up to the ‘mama’ album, with ‘trick of the tail’ being my favorite. now, give me gabriel out front with collins AND chester thompson on drums & i am totally there. i’ve seen them enough times post-duke to get my fill.

RicardoVillasenor | 6/20/2007, 2:15 pm EST

It would have been great to see Genesis reunited this year, I still trust these guys take off their silly prides and take it as simple as it should be, just get together, work on some new material and you will see how succesful it will, be, maybe next year? I hope, Ah! include Steve too.

T-Bone | 6/20/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Glad to see Peter Gabriel rolling out “I Don’t Remember”. On the other hand, no “ABACAB” on the Genesis play list??? Bummed.

Santiago | 6/20/2007, 9:40 pm EST

Yeah, the lamb will rise again… let’s hope.
I don’t a give a shit to anything Genesis released after 1976, although most of it is probably quite good… but I want the real Genesis, the larger-than-life killer 5-piece machine that made me weep, joy and get struck in awe lots of times throughout simple 50-minute records…
That’s Genesis!
And yeah, it’s hard to get over pride, but think in the fans… in the entire world!

Lurker | 6/22/2007, 2:06 pm EST

The Genesis “Phil” setlist is great, maybe replace “no SOn of Mine” and “I can’t Dance” though with Misunderstanding, Dance on a Volcano, All in a mouse’s night, Down and Out, Evidence of Autummn, Dodo, Silver Rainbow….(At least there’s no Illegal Alien)
Here’s hoping this Peter Gabriel concert/setlist will come to NYC in the fall….

netminder1 | 7/19/2007, 7:14 pm EST

as a long time fan of all genesis music I am looking forward to seeing the show for the 9th and 10th times with my first show in 78. personally I think with this being the 30th anniversary of “Seconds Out” it would be fitting to end the show with “Firth of Fifth” and “I know what I like” as it was then, move “Carpet Crawlers” down into the setlist, Please!

Skeezix | 9/4/2007, 5:38 pm EST

Hold On My Heart?

Yikes.

DAN | 9/14/2007, 7:43 pm EST

I love the playlist and can’t wait to see Genesis live, but theres barely anything from Wind & Wuthering =[

Nmar | 9/16/2007, 8:44 pm EST

Seeing Genesis Saturday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Am really looking forward to a great night of music.

Wot Gorilla | 9/25/2007, 7:41 pm EST

Wot Gorilla – Dodo/Lurker – Burning Rope – Duke’s Travel’s – Supper’s Ready – In The Cage (Medley from Three Sides Live). That’s my ultimate show. everything else would be what they’re playing while the EMS restarts my heart!!!

BT | 9/26/2007, 1:46 pm EST

I guess its just me but I love the tunes from “Abacab”, I’m way disappointed
