New Dylan PBS Documentary: The Next “No Direction Home” or Something Else?

6/18/07, 2:49 pm EST

Is a new Bob Dylan documentary in the works? A Milwaukee paper did a story on Dylan’s old Greenwich hangout the Kettle of Fish and quoted an employee saying “there’s a gal who’s doing a PBS documentary, following up the last documentary on Dylan, and she is going to do some interviews in here over a couple of weeks.”
So what’s the deal? A source close to Dylan says “there is no [No Direction Home] sequel in the works.” We’ve heard elsewhere, however, that some sort of documentary is definitely forthcoming. Worse case scenario here is that PBS raised lots of money with the last one and is tossing together some shitty folk revival documentary. The best case scenario is a fully authorized follow-up to No Direction Home, hopefully covering the Basement Tapes through at least the gospel years. If this is a follow-up, who do you want to see interviewed in addition to Dylan? We’re going to shoot for the moon and hope that Sara Dylan breaks her thirty-year silence.

I would love for this to happen! Got a ticket to see Dylan the 15th of July in Indianapolis.

DYLAN
he is an American Treasure

How about interviewing AJ Weberman? That would be a riot! (Wait – is he even still alive? I better google it and get back to you.)

The gospel years are better off forgotten! I’d be happy if the sequel made it through the Desire / Rolling Thunder Revue years. Hopefully this mystery gal works for Marty, I’d hate to see anyone else doing a follow-up to his movie.

While “No Direction Home” was really good, it’s a sham to say it was “directed” by Scorsese (whom I have the ultimate respect for) when indeed he was a glorified editor. I remember when it came out, it was mentioned that Dylan’s own archivist conducted ALL the Dylan interviews himself, and thus controlled the questions. Scorsese was quoted in one story saying he was too “intimidated” to do them himself!

Hey Bob.
A director doesn’t have to actually shoot the film or conduct the interviews. He just provides a direction for the film, hence the word “director.”

I’d love to hear from members of the Rolling Thunder Review — Sam Shepard, Roger McGuinn, Joan Baez (although she’d protect him), etc.

Peace…

How about his ex wives, girlfriends, and band members?

ElliottMarx | 6/18/2007, 10:14 pm EST

I think Scarlet Rivera would be an interesting interview. Mark Knopfler really made Infidels work, he would be gret as well.

Shadow Blaster | 6/19/2007, 2:30 am EST

Well, how about Robbie Robertson? I mean, where was he in No Direction Home? I find it strange he was not interviewed then. Also, the Nashville musicians Dylan worked with 1966-69 (those still alive).
By the way, a serious flaw in No Direction Home is that the recording of Blonde on Blonde is not covered at all.

How could gospel years be forgotten? Please get some tapes from the shows 79/80. Bob is fired up, the best singing ever

Dan | 6/19/2007, 7:12 am EST

Alex, I also have tickets to the Indy show. Hope for good weather.

I wish everybody would just leave Dylan alone. Period. How does it feel to spend one’s entire life as some broke-down sychophant? Oh, that’s right, it isn’t “one’s” life–it’s life lived vicariously through Dylan. Just listen to and dig the music. Leave the guy alone.

cowboy_bob | 6/19/2007, 8:11 am EST

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott had a lot to do with it………

Matt | 6/19/2007, 8:41 am EST

I’m seeing Dylan the 17th of July. I’d like to see the new doc cover at least up until Planet Waves and probably through Rolling Thunder. I think including the gospel years is just too much for one documentary.

Mrs. Bob Dylan | 6/19/2007, 8:49 am EST

I think it should just be bob for a whole hour or to or maybe many hours…
I just love the close up of bob when he talks…
But this time show his whole body when he talks…
Because he is a handsome man…
Well in my eyes he is…

I LOVE YOU BOB!!!

Another documentary from ‘67 thru ‘89 would be fantastic, but I wouldn’t count on an exclusive with Sara Dylan. I’m willing to bet that she isn’t merely holding a personal deal to not speak, but more so that she isn’t allowed as part of their divorce agreement. Same reason you wouldn’t see Carolyn Dennis either. Regardless, whatever PBS comes up with I’ll watch it!

Rock Turtleneck | 6/19/2007, 10:28 am EST

The Dylan bio Down the Highway interviews Dylan’s neighobor in Woodstock from the Basement Tapes/John Wesley Harding years. He was just an average guy in town but he got to be friends with Bob and I believe he taught Dylan to paint as well. That would be interesting to track him down for an interview.

I’m still waiting for a definitive ‘Beatles Anthology’ style documentary. No Direction Home left out too much. It didn’t mention Blonde on Blonde or the song ‘The Times They Are A-Changin” at all.

It wasn’t bad, but it was four hours long and was essentially just about Dylan pissing off the folkies by going electric.

Biff | 6/19/2007, 12:28 pm EST

Would love to see a sequel to ‘No direction home’. I watch it every week on DVD, would love to see any more concert footage that may be out there. Saw Bob in Newcastle a couple of months ago, he was great

Chris | 6/19/2007, 2:00 pm EST

How about relating the interviews to literary influences, Shelley, Keats, etc. Hey, I know they’re dead, but there are some brilliant minds who could tie his oeuvre together. Dylan will go down in literary history amongst the greatest. Ditto with American music, and, American history in general. Go Bob!!

Stan Denski | 6/19/2007, 2:03 pm EST

I’d kind of like to see PBS hire AJ Weberman to do it. I mean, if we want to peek in his sock drawer, why not just dive head first into his garbage?

Leave the guy alone.

outfidel | 6/19/2007, 2:06 pm EST

years say ‘74 thru ‘79 not enough footage been seen

Why has’nt “Eat the Document” been released yet???

J | 6/20/2007, 12:05 pm EST

How about a documentary about everything that has been found in his gargage over the years?

If you enjoy his music, by all means listen to it 24 hours a day. Why do you crave more?

Live your own life.

I can guarantee that Sara won’t be making an appearance, but I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to scare up a herd of sluts who passed through his world in the guise of back-up singers, personal assistants, etc. They’d have nothing to lose and some t.v. to gain. I’d like to hear his brother speak. But that’s as likely as Sara. Oh,well…
