Interpol’s Our Love to Admire: The Rock Daily Preview

6/18/07, 4:21 pm EST

Interpol’s new album, Our Love To Admire, doesn’t hit stores till July 10th, but Rock Daily recently scored an advance copy. Basically, it sounds like Interpol were let loose in Arcade Fire’s church/studio; the band uses everything from strings to a chorus to handclaps in a daring attempt to trick out their moody post-punk sound. Here’s a quick track-by-track preview:

1. “Pioneer to the Falls” This theatrical opening track showcases Interpol’s new love for swooping strings and chilled-out piano.

2. ROCK DAILY PICK: “No I In Threesome” An awesome, apocalypse-heralding track with still more warm, friendly piano.

3. “The Scale” A gothic, bass-drum-driven romp, with cryptic lyrics like, “I made you and now I take you back.”

4. “The Heinrich Maneuver” The album’s first single sounds like Interpol’s earlier stuff — noise rendered moody and elegant.

5. “Mammoth” This very pretty, very angry track is built around layers of relentless guitars and the refrain “spare me the suspense.”

6. ROCK DAILY PICK: “Pace is the Trick” This dark ballad starts out with the familiar spare echo of Daniel Kessler’s guitar and Paul Banks’s morose drawl and evolves into an anguished goth symphony.

7. “All Fired Up” This aggressive romp contains more angular guitars, and the lyrics are more violent and confrontational than typical Interpol (ex: “I dream of you draped in wires and leaning on the breaks). Also: handclaps!

8. ROCK DAILY PICK: “Rest My Chemistry” A classic Interpol track, with layered, maudlin vocals and restless guitars over pulsating bass lines.

9. “Who Do You Think” This banging track features urgent Kessler-patented guitar sounds and a spooky choir in the background

10. “Wrecking Ball” On this track, Interpol seem to use every uncharacteristically lighthearted noisemaking aparatus on hand, from lilting vocal harmonies to playful sound effects and strings. This could be the first optimistic Interpol track ever.

11. “The Lighthouse” We never thought we’d say this about any Interpol track, but “The Lighthouse” has a vaguely mariachi theme to it. If Ian Curtis laid down vocals to a Rodrigo y Gabriela tune played slowly on electric guitars loaded with effects, this is how it would sound.

i feel extremely disappointed with the album. but, i have only listened to it once so far so hopefully i will see it in a different light after my second listen.

the lighthouse is a door and i catch myself jumping up to spontaneously dance when i hear “who do you think” ahaha its funny because my body responds to this song even when im not paying attention to the track.

My favorite band used to be Ride. Now my favotite band is Interpol.

Only The smartest, and those most knowledgeable of the evolution of music history will hear how this record pushes the envelope of known music. The first two Cds are a bit derivitive compared to this acheivement. They have succeeded in what is so hard in this century: to pioneer new stylistic, harmonic, lyric and artistic territory. Oh yeah, and it ROCKS! In every sweaty sense of the word! Despite their culural sophistication, they express that essential rock need to get, or lose the girl.

OLTA is a good CD, its different. Though it lacks bass, bass & bass.
Cheers…

craig | 7/13/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Our love to admire is a powerful statement in dark pop. The lyrics are simultaneously abstract and straightforward. The production is spaceous and the guitars are powerful. I don’t need to say, but I’ll say it anyway, the bass kicks. Heinrich Maneuver, Mammoth, All Fired Up, Rest My Chemistry, and The Lighthouse are among the best Interpol songs released to date…and I loved Antics

foofoo | 7/13/2007, 1:16 am EST

ahhh, sorry there buddy but banks doesn’t write the songs, he writes the lyrics, kessler writes the songs while sitting at home in his undies watching french flims, also, to the other guy the lighthouse(the last track) is one of the best on the album, so is wrecking ball, my only complaint is they should of left out a couple the antics left overs and included mind over time as a album track

j. davidson | 7/12/2007, 9:32 pm EST

Interpol is way up!!!

Mboyuh | 7/12/2007, 1:38 pm EST

banks isn’t dylan (lyrically) and if that’s what you’re expecting, you’re listening to the wrong band. this isn’t a breakthrough record but i liked just about every song but the last one. it’s what i sort of expected. i’m a fan of their sound and they don’t disappoint in that manner. bloc party and wilco were letdowns.

Dimitria teebo | 7/11/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Ive read the mixed review, but in all honestly Im floored with this album and cant stop listening to it, and looking up the lyrics to it, I myself am I huge fan of the way Paul Banks writes songs. I think this album really shows how the band has matured. Interpol is the first band that I has never disapointed me, I love the new album as well as the previous two. Interpol is fuckin magical and captivating. and I agree there music is made for intamacy.

dear mr ericzoo, nice try really…but you are reaching a bit…here is a quote that expresses what i feel about the lyrics “I can’t help but note that it does feature the all-time widest gamut of Banks’s lyrical skills: going from the genuinely great line, “This isn’t you yet/ What you thought was such a conquest,” to the lazy, automatic scripture, “You’re hair is so pretty and red/ Baby, baby you’re really the best,” is one of the most painful juxtapositions in quality in the band’s entire catalog (though “Obstacle 1″’s “Her stories are boring and stuff/ She’s always calling my bluff” still marks the nadir).” Michael Idov, August 18, 2003

Chilling!! Right where they left off. Just what I expected. I am very satisfied. Thank you Interpol :)

Amazing, a great band always pushes themselves and this one proves that I’pol have grown. Can’t wait to see it live this fall

untitled | 7/5/2007, 11:42 pm EST

i picked up TOTBL Nov. couple ,years ago gave it one listen in my car while dodging bad drivers, being distracted and so on. Thought it was ok stuck it back on the shelf until. about Feb.Put it in my home system to wake up to the next morning. Listened all the way through half awake. It was so good I swear i thought it was a dream listened again right away…and now I blast their stuff almost daily. Give me a break with lyrics Dont think those words are supposed to be linear, they just leave impressions and maybe thats why I never get tired of it’s always unfamiliar.Im glad these guys do what they do. If you dont like there stuff listen again

Nasser | 7/5/2007, 5:56 pm EST

I can honestly say that this next album sounds orgasmic and amazing! however, im a fan of the TOTBL Interpol, not ANTICS Interpol. I mean sure, there were a few good songs on Antics, like Narc and Evil, however, the album as a whole was very dry and less metropolitan. TOTBL was one of the best albums i have heard in a while and was totally hooked on that Cd for a few months. i feel that Interpol should go back to its pre-Antic era and rediscover the TOTBL sound they once had. That is what made them Interpol!however, as a loyal Interpol fan, im still buying this album on the first day

Immigration girl | 7/5/2007, 1:39 pm EST

I love Interpol and I love there second disk “Antics”, especially the songs “Take you on a cruise” and “Narc”, but upon listening to the leak of this album on MTV.com ..I don’t know what to think quite. Some songs are really good like “rest my chemistry” and “pioneers of the fall”, but I don’t know about the others. It feels like they want to grasp a little more like Arcade Fire but don’t want to lose that dark resonant sound quality that the’ve perfected. Can you still remain imaginatively dark while adding more layers to your sound? I say why not. That’s what Neon Bible did. Some songs seem to pick up, but then others seem to regress and come off like flat sequels to a previous albums songs. I dunno. It’s a toss up…but I don’t think this is a must have disk. But make no mistake…there are definitely some must listen to songs on this album!

kriegs | 7/4/2007, 1:26 am EST

I’m suspicious of any fan of Interpol’s first two albums saying they dislike the new one.

Petty “fan” BS.

Shut up, and listen…and don’t judge unless you have the whole CD and go start to finish.

This is a brilliantly produced and brilliantly performed CD.

If a better CD comes out in ‘07, bring it ON!

tom | 7/3/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Drunk Dude | 7/2/2007, 6:56 am EST

I’m drunk, but dang it if this doesn’t sound a lot like their first album, not nearly as great but it’ll do over the other mindless pap they want to feed me….

Razvan Alex | 7/1/2007, 6:41 am EST

The first time I’ve listen it I thought it’s a good album but not memorable. At the fourth listening, I have to say it’s the album of the year. I bet !!

Nathan | 6/30/2007, 6:03 pm EST

I loved their first album. The second one was okay. This one is terrible! Repetitive, uninspired and BORING.

william | 6/29/2007, 11:28 pm EST

me thinks it is a great cd, and i must argue, over the lyrics, just take a listen to jack white’s meaningless-just a fuction of the song lyrics(ichy pooh!) and tell me interpol has bad lyrics,
ps go in see them in a small venue, not at a festival, they sound terrible at big shows, the music demands intimacy

Doctor. | 6/29/2007, 12:38 am EST

I love interpol and all but some of you guys are talking so far out your ass its ridiculous Interpol’s lyrics have never been on par with the music get over it they aren’t challenging they aren’t mathematical equations this ain’t Aphex Twin its interpol so deflate your giant hot air filled heads and accept the fact that interpol is a great strait forward bass driven band.

SpySlowhands | 6/28/2007, 4:28 pm EST

This album has some good stuff on it, but it just doesn’t gel. It’s kind of repetitive. That’s my view after only a couple of listens though.

lighthouse | 6/28/2007, 12:02 am EST

like the dude on supernovamelody.blogspot.com said, i think there’s a lot of REM hidden on this album, which is really weird and cool. but overall yeah, its just missing the moments i know theyre capable of. i love the album, nonetheless. cant wait to go see them live.

also, heinrich maneuver is great. a little repetitive, but really solid. if it wasnt a single i think folks would give it more of a chance, actually

Album of the year.
Interpol have truly reached the sublime.

Rita from Naples | 6/27/2007, 8:43 am EST

You’re so ignorant. Our Love To Admire is a very good record, different from the other two, but same good as well. We’ll be still listening to this record ten years from now. Interpol is so much better than all that rubbish you critics call indie rock, new wave, post punk etc.

123456789 | 6/26/2007, 8:48 am EST

I think this album is bloated and boring. Most songs are slow in pace and the guitar work is layered on top of itslef instead or reworked or interactive with itself (none of the synergy found in songs like Obstacle 1 or Stella from TOTBL). As a result Paul Banks probably had a tough time making his singing work no matter how obtuse his lyrics were. And where the hell was the bass the whole time. Maybe I stole an unfinished mix from the internet? Hopefully these songs will sink in over the next month, but right now it just seems like repetitive, unfinished ideas…

leif erikson | 6/26/2007, 2:59 am EST

ok after listening to heinrich maneuver i was about to punch my computer…that song blows. then i heard pioneer. it sounded good and then better. i was getting extremely excited. “nice great wow this is fantastic here comes the climax…wtf , its over! what happened it just dropped off at 3:48!” its like they were climbing everest and turned around ten feet from the top. yup interpol got complacent on pioneer and then i found out the rest of the album was like that also. complacent. satisfied with imperfection.

Alex | 6/26/2007, 1:59 am EST

This album tops Antics, by far, but they will never be able to beat TOTBL. I love the New Album there are so many great songs on it and so many memorable momments. They exceeded my expectations.

Jive Turkey | 6/26/2007, 1:42 am EST

I believe the line “Her stories are boring and stuff” was written with a tongue planted firmly in his cheek. Hes making fun of the way she tells stories by wording the line as she would

Devo | 6/25/2007, 4:40 am EST

Memo to Interpol: I’m totally p*ssed off about OLTA!! I wanted greatness because I know what you’re capable of. I wanted better then even the meteoric heights of Turn on the Bright Lights. After three years of waiting I wanted to be blown the f*ck away!! Instead we got mediocrity and tedium. We got three good singles (viz. Pioneer to the falls, Rest my chemistry & Wrecking ball) and more than a few yawns. A half-pie effort, that doesn’t even surpass Antics. Sorry to be so harsh boys, but it’s how I feel after listening to Our Love to Admire.

Adrian | 6/24/2007, 11:35 pm EST

Just listened to the entire album, and I really don’t hear the mariachi theme in Lighthouse

It’s not easy for those of average intelligence or less to understand the state of new poetry. If you take a snippet of Interpol lyrics it might sound absurd. But look at the whole of each song you’ll see how hard it is to write like that and how amazing those lyrics are. The majority of those words are truly fearless and moving. Writing lyrics is a tough poetic artform and even if you’re smart enough, you may not have the ability to comprehend what’s actually good until you’ve tried to write some yourself.

elcaptano | 6/22/2007, 12:49 pm EST

great lyrics, great sound, best thing to come out of amercica in very long time, amazing fullstop so stop ur anal banter

Moeez | 6/21/2007, 5:53 pm EST

Wow, if you guys actually tried to understand the lyrics and use even a single brain cell, you’d get how deep and foreboding the lyrics are. Give me an example of a modern rock band with better lyrics. There are literally dozens of memorable lines from each song, and each song has a story to it. Paul’s lyrics are poetic. Can’t believe how many dicks there are at this site.

BTW, if you want a lyrical analysis of Interpol’s songs, here are many of mine on this link:

He has some great lines.

The entire lyrics for LEIF ERIKSON are genious.

I also love evil’s lyrics.

This band is the best band on the block. They’re live shows are like a religious experience for me.

hehe | 6/21/2007, 3:06 pm EST

didn’t say they weren’t a good band, i love them, but the lyrics are the weak point, some bands just don’t write good ones, and really it doesn’t matter that much, still don’t know 75% of the lyrics to my bloody valentine and i still love them too.

ps who said anything about the shins? but while i am on the subject, the new album kinda sucks

professor joe | 6/20/2007, 9:38 am EST

enough with the lyrics. you’re really reaching for stuff if you’re pickin on Interpol for weak lyrics. do the shins sound so much better b/c you can’t tell what Jimmy Mercer is talking about half the time?
Interpol is a great AMERICAN band, they better tour in the fall

carlos diggler | 6/20/2007, 7:27 am EST
