Bonnaroo 2007, Day Three: In the Pit with Police Fans

6/17/07, 4:44 pm EST

Saturday was another extraordinary day for the temporary residents of Planet Bonnaroo, thanks to standout performances by The Flaming Lips, Ween, Gogol Bordello, Franz Ferdinand and so many more. But one show towered above the rest: Hundreds of fans waited in line all day at the main stage or, “What Stage,” in ‘Roo parlance (as opposed to the Which Stage, That Tent, and This Tent), hoping to gain admission to the area closest to the feet of The Police. Finally, the gate was opened for these dedicated festival goers about 40 minutes before the legendary trio commenced their set. Rolling Stone talked with a few of these fans as the excitement was mounting… and mounting… and mounting. And, of course, we stuck around for the show as well.

Check back Monday for a full festival roundup.

yup. White Stripes was the best of show. Police the worst. It was great to see Michael Frante, though I heard Kings of Leon - on at the same time - rocked out as well. That’s the hard thing about ‘roo, picking the show for the time slot. Thankfully Gov’t Mule and friends played til dawn.

the police the great rock n roll swindle. What a clown sting have you not done enough damage to the police sting ? Now destroy the memory of those classic police songs by as he calls it retooling them. Your the tool sting just play the bloody songs the way the fans want them and the way they were meant to be played .Sting may have wrote the songs they are still police songs. Sting is not the police and now what a weak watered down police show i feel sorry for copland andy and all the fans who have waited so long for sting to keep turning his back on the police for 23 years go away sting and keep your jazzy slow police in your crappy solo career

Once again, the best band at Bonnaroo is ignored by Rolling Stone. Gov’t Mule had the greatest set, with special guests John Paul Jones, Bob Weir among others. Warren Haynes, who was ranked as the 23rd best guitar player of all time by RS, continues to be underated while less talented musicians and bands are treated like gods. Ask any of the talent at Bonnaroo about Gov’t Mule, and I’ll bet they are respected by all. Why no respect from Rolling Stone?

First of all, The Police at Bonnaroo is what I would call a “Successful Disappointment” in that the band played well, but what STING was hoping for didn’t happen either, people. Every other show this year, ALL of the fans sang along with Sting to their classics. Half of the crowd that night at Bonnaroo was born AFTER they broke up, so they didn’t know the songs. Give the band credit for being skilled and playing well, since after so long it was amazing they sounded that fresh. But, they should have researched what Bonnaroo fans wanted, and the fans should learn to enjoy three guys and some instruments. No jams, no encores, no lasers, no UFOs, no Bush-bashing, just music.

the MY FOOD CRUSH view for the which stage was where it was at all weekend, and the crew was hella cool with letting folks into thier domain….can’t wait to see them next year and see if they can top that view and service.

Whilst on many doses, Me and a few friends got lost in the woods between Camp 1 and Camp 9. We didn’t quite make it through but we did hear the White Stripes rock it the f^ck out. At least we got out of the woods in time to make it to the pit and see Widespread. Ziggy and Widespread made the Weekend very worthwile. I love you Bonnaroo!

Sting says after a song, “Thank you, Bonnaroo Tennessee!!” - wait… isn’t this Manchester we’re in? NOTE TO STING - this isn’t just another tour date - this is Bonnaroo so bring your A game buddy. Oh yeah, and tell Andy to lay off the booze before the show - his chops were very sloppy. The Police were by far the biggest disappointment of Bonnaroo ‘07. Maybe Sting and Co. should consult with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers for tips on how to rock the socks off of the Bonnaroo crowds?

The Flaming Lips had the best show of Bonnaroo bar none.

Police robbed us blind! Ween,Lips, L.Allen, Tool, Fountains of Wayne and Ziggy made our list. I completely agree with movieman2007! We were very disappointed- what a horrible arrangement for the police to be there. It almost made the commercialization of the event even worse!Oh and this year we proved it was almost better to go without a shower than one that smelled like rotten eggs! Peace

i was front row at the concert. at 1:20 seconds in the video you can see my and my friends getting our picture taken, and i shout “Bonnaroo!!!”

here’s the best part: i paid no money to go to the festival (i worked as a vendor at my friend’s concession stand), and i waited at most ten minutes in line for the front row (i told people that i was a vendor and needed to get through the line). probably the best deal of my life.

is there still serious issues with the police? or why did they end so early?

Where to start…The Police…sucked. Copeland was great, Sting was pretty good, Andy was horrible. Can he remember how to play the songs anymore? When you come to Bonnaroo, you have to bring your A-game, with everything you can bring. The police brought no multi media to visually entertain us, no lasers, no nothing. They should take a few lessons from the Flaming Lips, who was the best act of the weekend (minus all the political mumbo-jumbo). Back to The Police, energy was lacking from the band, and they quit 50 min. early with no encore. Sting is a tool. Which, by the way..John..Tool was phenomenal! They were powerful, had great visual effects and brought Pink Floyd style lasers to Bonnaroo for the first time! Loved it! Bonnaroo is the greatest experience a music lover can have, but next time..easy on the dust!

I remember the “Wookie”. I saw him two days earlier and his knees were all bloody. When he was trying to cut in line they were still bloody.

John | 6/18/2007, 9:46 pm EST

The Police gave a great show. Just fantastic. The worst band of the weekend was Tool. My God were they horrible. I have never seen a cheesier band. Spinal Tap could have given a better show.

As far as the Police go, they sounded fantastic, had tremendous energy and held court with 80,000 people. I have seen a million shows in my life and anyone who was actually at Bonoroo and weren’t impressed by the Police, just have no idea what a good show is.

As far as the other acts, Manu Chao was incredible. Just an unbelievable performer. Much better than some of the bands on over at the main stage. Franz Ferdinand was really good. Too bad they and Ben Harper played at the same time. Some of the scheduling was really dumb.

The view of the White Stripes from the top of the My Food Crush VIP catering truck was unbeatable! The masses spread out before us as the sun set slow on dusty evening air filled with the wailing sounds of the White Stripes and throngs of greatful hippies raging at the spectacle. Truly unbelievable!!!

Scott | 6/18/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I saw the Police in Oakland last week and can understand why people felt let down.
On the other hand, I watched the White Stripes Bonnaroo set on the web and completely agree, they are the best live act on tour today!!!
See them wherever you can!

Austin | 6/18/2007, 12:42 pm EST

The Flaming Lips owned all at Bonnaroo.

jerry | 6/18/2007, 8:51 am EST

After waiting for 7 hours to see them I too was very disappointed. However, I must say that Sting, with exception of some notes his voice was straining to hit, was wonderful to hear.
On the other hand, as the others have commented, the band was far from lack luster. I feel for those who are paying the scalpers for good seats to a let down show.

Shocked by the Police-Bad | 6/18/2007, 2:31 am EST

The Police where by far the worst act of the whole Bonnarro weekend. They seemed like they could not of cared less about being up their, had no passion, no drive, no energy. It seemed most hardcore fans where pretty dissapointed. Firstly they had a two and half hour block with no other artists playing, and finished their third encore in way less then two hours. I heard one guy say that “Sting had gone from the greatest rock star in the world, to the absolute worst.” Another, “I had waited some twenty plus years to hear them live on stage, I might honestly never be able to listem to them again.” Another wanted his money back saying they played an even worse set then he saw in Vancouver despite promises of “big surprises”. The rock out in Roxanne was more of wimper, that left people standing around begging for a reason to dance. The only slightly redeeming quality was watching Stuart Copeland live. I have never thought an artist I ahd scene live of that caliber was bad, the guys were terrible. Pack it in, leave the legacy alone before you destroy it completely.

movieman2007 | 6/18/2007, 12:15 am EST

yeah so me and a buddy of mine said ‘fuck the police, lets go get a close spot for the lips’. so much more of a badass show

Josh | 6/17/2007, 11:30 pm EST

Yeah that White Stripes set was really really awesome.

Jack went bat shit crazy on Deathletter.

Mike | 6/17/2007, 9:23 pm EST

The White Stripes spin-kicked Bonnaroo in the dick!! Curse those who proceed, and dare those who attempt to follow!
