Paul McCartney at New York’s Tiny Highline Ballroom: The Full Report

6/14/07, 9:03 am EST

Sir PaulIt wasn’t the Cavern Club, or some Reeperbahn dive. And the year was definitely not 1962. But after Paul McCartney finished off his semi-secret Manhattan club show Wednesday night with a blazing, garage-y take on “I Saw Her Standing There,” it was possible to imagine – just for a moment – that you finally had an idea what it was like to see him and his old bandmates play rock n’ roll in a packed, tiny venue. “Well, here we are in a small club,” he said earlier in the evening, sounding as surprised as anybody.

McCartney’s performance – at Chelsea’s brand-new, upscale Highline Ballroom, which holds only 700 people (in this case, that meant press, VIPs who included a beaming Whoopi Goldberg, and ultra-giddy contest winners) – was meant to promote his strong new album, Memory Almost Full, which just debuted at No. 3. And while he skipped the album’s best tune, “My Ever Present Past,” the four new ones he did play held up: the strongest were “Only Mama Knows” with its heavy, winding guitar riff, and “That Was Me,” which had McCartney finding his “I’m Down” growl for the first time of the night as he sang about his own unlikely life story: “That was me… sweating cobwebs in the cellar/ On TV/ That was me.”

The bulk of the set was made up of Beatles songs, performed with McCartney’s usual, stripped-down touring band (except for a substitute keyboardist), in arrangements that were mostly identical to the ones he played at Madison Square Garden last year. Some elements, such as the synth strings on “Long and Winding Road,” felt particularly out of place in a club setting. McCartney seemed to have the most fun when he swapped his bass for a guitar and picked out the signature riffs on an extended, super-funky “I’ve Got a Feeling” – which still feels like it’s missing something without John Lennon on hand to sing his “Everybody’s had a wet dream” part. McCartney acknowledged that absence and two others a few songs earlier, dedicating the aching ballad “Here Today” to “our fallen heroes: John, George and Linda.”

Setlist:

“Drive My Car”
“Only Mama Knows”
“Dance Tonight”
“C Moon”
“The Long and Winding Road”
“I’ll Follow the Sun”
“Calico Skies”
“That Was Me”
“Blackbird”
“Here Today”
“Back in the U.S.S.R.”
“Nod Your Head”
“House of Wax”
“I’ve Got a Feeling”
“Matchbox”
“Get Back”
“Baby Face” (snippet)
“Hey Jude”
“Let It Be”
“Lady Madonna”
“I Saw Her Standing There”

brilliant BRAVO doesn’t get nay better than this!!!

Kafka | 6/14/2007, 10:30 am EST

It looks like Macca actually did perform the best song off ”Memory”, which is ”House Of Wax” not ”Ever Present Past”.

Brad | 6/14/2007, 10:31 am EST

Ever present past might be the WEAKEST track on the new CD. So lame that Paul plays Long and Winding Road with lame strings.

Lisa | 6/14/2007, 10:38 am EST

Also lame: Paul ignored his entire Wings catalog… How are people supposed to discover it if he ignores it?

Brandon | 6/14/2007, 10:39 am EST

He played C moon… that’s wings… but its about the worst wings’ song there is! Stop ignoring your amazing post-Beatles back catalog Paul!

kc | 6/14/2007, 10:58 am EST

I can’t believe the level of complaining I’m seeing here.

LoveU2 | 6/14/2007, 11:14 am EST

I agree with kc…
I would be screaming my head off if I were there… and yes, my favorite tracks off of his new album are Dance Tonight, Ever Present Past, and Mr. Bellamy. I would be a little disappointed if he didn’t play those, but I could live with it! Just seeing Paul McCartney perform is a joy unto it’s self…

He is a living legend who will be listened to and discussed for the next 200 years at least AND he happens to be amazing live. What is a real turn on, unlike almost everyone else (especially his age group), he refuses to change the key (or the octave) of any song when singing live and he done them all at this point. And many of his songs are killers live or in the studio.

Donna Mac | 6/14/2007, 11:41 am EST

It is my dream to see Sir Paul McCartney one more time. I was lucky enough to win tickets two years in a row to see him and the rest of the Beatles at the Shea, 40 years ago. Of course from where I was seated they looked like ants! And forget about hearing the music! It was deafening!! But I remember the excitement of being there. I just wish someday I could meet him and listen to him play up close at a concert.

Harry Krishner | 6/14/2007, 11:55 am EST

Long live MACCA! Rocking as hard now as he ever did!

JK | 6/14/2007, 12:14 pm EST

Sir Paul is the best, bar none, that there ever was or will be. He is by far the best song writer of all time as recognized by the Book of World Records. I would be happy just to see him, let alone see him in a small club setting. It would be great to see him no matter what song set he performed. Sir Paul, you are by far the best, I can’t wait until the next tour.

Nmar | 6/14/2007, 12:21 pm EST

Had the great privelage of seeing Sir Paul back in 02, and it was magical!!!! Hands down the best concert I’ve ever been too and that’s saying a lot because I’ve been to a ton of concerts.

Brien Comerford | 6/14/2007, 12:32 pm EST

The ageless and multitalented Paul McCartney is still a captivating, riveting and tireless live performer. His vocals and bass playing are intact. He should play “Looking For Changes” (an animal rights song)as a tribute to Linda. “Looking For Changes” rocks hard on behalf of animal rights.

Steal Dragon | 6/14/2007, 12:58 pm EST

I remember seeing him in the late 80’s and then again on Off The Ground, 2 amazing shows where he did play a lot of Wing’s and solo stuff in addition to a few Beatles tunes. I would love to hear some of the Wings and Solo stuff from the 70’s and 80’s again live. Great songs buried in there. Flowers in the Dirt, a very underrated disc.

McCartney drags out the same old song list that he always drags out plus a few new songs. Is this guy adverse to learning new songs from his own library or what? Thanks for nothing McCartney!

I really hope to see him if he comes to Austin, Texas! he is amazing, handsome, talented and wonderful! I adore him! Keep singing, Paul! Your album is so good! I love Ever Present Past. Mr. Bellamy, and See Your Sunshine!

I was there last night. It was amazing. Paul’s guitar playing during “I’ve got a feeling” was outrageously good. I wish he would do more of that freewheeling guitar playing (think guitar solo from Too Many People). I was in the second row (standing), he was maybe 8 feet away from me. What a thrill!

I’ll Follow the Sun, I’ve got a feeling- those are not your typical live (or radio) fare, along with all the new stuff- in a club setting, no less. Very impressive- though I’ll admit, I wasn’t there, unfortunately. Which is why I’m grateful for the article. As for some of the comments- are there really that many stupid people out there?

Chicago Mark | 6/15/2007, 12:19 pm EST

Hear Hear Brandon! He’s still not doing enough Wings for me. And could he please bring back the Rickenbacker Bass?

rick rivets | 6/15/2007, 4:42 pm EST

Why is it that the real fans never get to see these shows. You either have to be press or know someone. The real fans who paid money for Pauls CD’s and actually listen to them never get the chance to see our hero. How about a concert for the fans with no press and no freebies to people who couldn’t care if they were at a McCartney show or watching Paris Hilton making a fool or herself trying to sing. How many people actually knew who they were watching and his history. Unfair…..

Lou-retty | 6/15/2007, 4:59 pm EST

I agree with rick rivets …. Wouldn’t it be great if artists like Paul (are there any like him left, anyway?) would do small shows like this for their long-time diehard fans? It could be a contest where only winning official fan club members were either given tickets or allowed to purchase. One small show before every tour & you could only win once in your lifetime in order to give everyone a fair chance. Call me delusional…. but a gal can dream.

Real Fans did have the chance, and the hardcore ones who took it won.
i was there, and that was easy enough for New Yorkers but with us waiting were two ladies from St. Louis, some were tere since Monday afternoon, we even got free t-shirts, it was an amazing concert, and a great treat.
you shoulda’ been there!

who cares about those haters
mccartney underwent some bizarre revampage in 2002 – lifted the face, somehow became able to hit all the notes again (listen to TRIPPING THE LIVE FANTASTIC and tell me he’s the same macca??) – and never looked back.
thanks for continuing to tour – I remember when it was once every ten years you MIGHT be able to see the MASSIVE STADIUM tour IF YOU WERE LUCKY…

alabama beatles fan | 6/16/2007, 11:51 pm EST

just watched “hard days night”, fell in love with the beatles all over again!

Beatles Lover | 6/17/2007, 9:14 pm EST

I wish I could have gone to the show! I ove Paul McCartney and the Beatles. But I’ll see Paul in concert someday (hopefully, if I can afford it!) I/m also hoping to see Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. Not that I listen to much of Ringo’s solo music, but I would love to see the two surviving Beatles in concert. I wish I could’ve been around during Beatlemania so I could actually see the Beatles perform together, or at least I wish I was around when John Lennon was alive. I was alive when George was (of course, or I would be too young to type this up!) but, sadly, I never had the chance to see him perform. But I know this comment board is about Paul, not the other Beatles, so I’ll stop ranting on about my life dreams now! But anyways, I really love Paul and Wings and the Beatles and John and George and Ringo and even if I don’t see Paul perform when I’m alive, Ill get to meet him in heaven! And to King Kameamea (he made a post above), we like Paul’s old songs just as much as his new songs, if not better! Paul performs his old songs and the Beatles old songs because he knows his fans like them. I mean, everyone’s heard of and loves the Beatles songs he performed (i.e. ‘Let It Be’), compared to some of his new songs that not everyone knows. If you only want to hear new songs by Paul, go buy his new album (’Memory Almost Full’). Paul will always perform old Beatles and Wings songs as long as he is having conerts and touring, so you might as well just get used to it! OK, I’ll stop ranting now. Rock on, Paul!!!

Betty2Booper | 6/17/2007, 11:26 pm EST

I saw Sir Paul in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand,2005.Boy,was he awesome! I have been a fan ever since I knew of his existance with The Beatles, and I’ve loved him since way back then. There can be no one to ever top him; I just adore him. Linda was blessed, not to mention fortunate to have been married to him and been with him so many years.God Bless them both.

Bob Alden | 6/18/2007, 1:16 am EST

If you saw him live, you’re lucky. His new album is one of his best: smart, heart-breaking, hummable. “Ever Present Past”: how could he escape his own history? It’s what the whole album’s about, whether he sings as himself or plays a character (as in “Mr. Bellamy” or “Only Mama Knows”). Good luck, Paul! You’re still great.

Helmut Diehl | 6/18/2007, 9:54 am EST

I love Paul’s music! I’m lucky I have seen him five times in concert, twice (five days appart) with my daughter Maria, and he certainly ROCKS! I hope to see him a few more times in concert!

Thank you Paul!

LoveU2 | 6/18/2007, 10:02 am EST

I just like to say right now:
HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY PAUL!!! Hope it’s as grand as your new album! Now go to a bar with some friends and celebrate!

I was at the secret show at the Highline ballroom in NYC on June 13, 07 – and it was amazing and I could’nt believe that I xcan see him so close. A real treat – once in a lifetime.
(I saw Paul also on big stages, but this one was very different).

Kendig97 | 6/19/2007, 6:37 am EST

I grew up with his music and I have seen him live twice abd they were the best concerts I have ever seen. He is incredibly talented. I am a singer, songwriter and guitar player because of him and the Beatles. ANd I can’t imagine how he can still hit the notes he hits!! Happy Birthday Paul
You are the BEST!

I wasnt there because i’m far from New York, in the Netherlands to be precise. But Paul is a living legend, my favourite is
his album ‘flaming pie’.
Paul, Bob (Dylan) and Bono. The greatest of all time.
I live in their music and the colours are heavenly bright.
God is alive.

Quit living off the Beatles | 6/26/2007, 2:45 pm EST

I wish people would realize that Paul McCartney is not the Beatles. I wish he would realize that too and either retire or just do his own work instead of his horrible covers of a group he was only 1/4 a part of. Obviously, he is making a lot of money off these antics, but as hard as he tries and as many free shows that he gives he will never return to what he was without John, George and Ringo. Starbucks can play him constantly for the next 5 years, but he will never make an album anywhere near as good as the albums by The Beatles. More importantly, he really needs to quit performing The Beatles songs cause that only makes him sound worse. Yoko should have never given up those rights.

shaun | 6/30/2007, 8:10 pm EST

paul was the beatles and now the world knows it..no paul no sgt peppers.. no magical mystery tour.. no white ablum.. no let it be.. and without his drive and perfectionism no abbey road.. the man can do it all..as john said when george quit during let it be .let`s call eric.. john knew who the other half of the beatles were and that was sir paul…lennon/mccartney forever .. paul`s perseved the beatles sound in 2007 .. and i`m glad he`s alive to give it to us

Michael Tate | 6/30/2007, 9:02 pm EST

John chose Paul as his partner when John was 16 and Paul was 15 . George came thru Paul . From 1962 – 1969 they wrote and record about 300 songs together . I think that qualifys Paul to perform and sing whatever he wants .If you don`t like don`t watch or listen . The fact that the man is still around and write and performing for the pure love of music after all this tomeis a blessing . Along with his amazing songwriting singing and godgiven talent on any musical instrument , he`s also the best bass player in the world.

LifeLongFabFourFan | 7/2/2007, 7:09 pm EST

John was the hard, edgy, acerbic, political, and witty side of the greatest collaborative team in rock, and Paul was the sweeter, sentimental, fun and silly little love songs side. Together they were incomparably magical. Separately for a decade, they showed the world the distinct and different sides of their musical genius. No one knows if John would still be prolific and performing today had he lived. We do know that the talent, genius, and, yes, magic, that is McCartney still gets on stage, still mesmerizes fans old and new alike, and still carrys the heavy mantle of The Beatles, all that they were for so many millions, then and now.
Ringo does his own thing, and seems very happy to not promote his astonishing contribution to the greatest act in rock that there ever was. Paul will represent the best and brightest sparkle of The Beatles for as long as he wishes to…and then until his death, and long afterward. He is but one man, but there could never have been The Beatles and that wonderful sound without Macca.
He was the heart of so much that they were, and always will be. John was more the conscience, and to be complete, both heart and conscience are necessary. But Paul seems as complete and together as any living icon could be. I hope he finds wedded bliss again…I hate the thought of his being without love…it’s been a part of everything he ever wrote… everything he ever sang… Long live The Beatles…they truly changed the world…for the better.

Jack | 7/4/2007, 12:50 pm EST

John wrote alot of silly love songs.Remember Oh Yoko ?? Dear Yoko ?? Love ?? Woman ?? Very silly and very sappy .. And he also wrote his share of clunkers but no one wants to say so because he`s dead . Some of his solo stuff was horrible Somewhere in NY or Whatever gets you thur the night ring any bells ?? George was awful live the guys voice was weak and he also put out some awful solo records 33 1/3 Crackerbox palace ect ect. But together they were the most magical band in history. Thanks Paul for keeping the Beatles spirit alive in 2007.

Gerry Marsden | 7/5/2007, 7:16 pm EST

Amen!
Since the Beatles’ demise, Paul has maybe one albumn’s worth of decent songs.
And which ex-Beatle has consistently turned out accessible and fun material?
Ringo rocks!

cameron | 2/19/2008, 11:49 am EST

there was somthing about those four men that made perfect music and it wasnt just john and paul georges riffs are amazing and if you listen to the riff in let it be a couple times u can make the argument that that is the best song of all time but any way i think pauls new stuff is ok but he usually writes better with a writing partner like in the beatles or wings “band on the run” live and let die” are some of his best but nothing will beat the fab four just poping in an old beatles record like let it be or abbey road puts a smile on my
