Pete Wentz has a strategy for dealing with his recent scuffle with an audience member in Chicago: compare himself to Akon, who recently got in trouble for simulating sex onstage with the underage daughter of a Trinidadian minister, and tossing a heckling fan offstage.
Wentz apparently already had the multiplatinum R&B hookman on the brain before the scuffle: Onstage at Jones Beach last Tuesday, Fall Out Boy brought out some random dude called Tyler to do push-ups while the band played “Tell That Mick He Just Made My List Of Things To Do Today.” By way of an introduction Wentz said, “If Tyler can do push ups through this entire song we’re gonna throw out t-shirts; if he can’t we’re gonna throw Tyler, like we’re fucking Akon.”
Then, in response to yesterday’s report that Wentz had been involved in a fight with a fan in Chicago, he wrote an email defending his actions. Part of that email read: “We get heckled onstage all the time, and while I’m a jerk, I’m not the kind of person who would ever lash out at someone simply over this. I mean I’m not as big as Akon and haven’t written as many good songs.”
Finally, last night, during a performance in Indianapolis, Fall Out Boy covered Akon’s “Don’t Matter.” “We can’t talk about where we were last night for obvious reasons,” the rocker said. “But we thought we’d play this song and send it out to my future cell mate.”
