Bonnaroo 2007: The Countdown Begins

Bonnaroo

Last year at Bonnaroo we were hanging out backstage with Matisyahu when he blessed the festival. That was pretty awesome. Other highlights included free morning yoga and Radiohead’s performance of “Fake Plastic Trees.” This year, we’re expecting the festival to rock at least as hard as last year, if not harder. With the White Stripes, The Police, Franz Ferdinand, The Flaming Lips, Wolfmother, Spoon, The Hold Steady and many, many, MANY more bands on this year’s lineup, the music is bound to be amazing.

In anticipation of this year’s event, which kicks off this tomorrow, tell us some of your most awesome Bonnaroo moments. The comment that makes us most nostalgic for that Tennessee mud will be singled out and praised for its brilliance. Ready? Go!

Bonnaroo 06 was a religious awakening of the most sinister and twisted kind, shows like MMW, Umphrey’s Mcgee, and the powerfully psycho-inducive Dumpstaphunk, brought out the best, and the worst in me. By the time the drugs had firmly taken control and I had stumbled back to my tent, something that could only happen at Bonnaroo brought me to another mental plane, i found a bullfrog with a makeshift leash around its neck. We walked for a few minutes and then parted ways due to the guilt i felt, this poor bastard was probably more ripped then I was, and that is not the kind of trip you want on your conscious, i dont care who you are

um…did someone say Radiohead already? best…show…ever. They played everything I could possibly think of, and a bunch of new stuff that was also mind-blowing. Beck, MMJ, Bright Eyes…I could go on. 2004 was sweet too, I’ll never forget dancing and partying with Robert Randolph and his family band through the night set.

The clowd of glowsticks last year during Radiohead’s performance. Radiohead’s entire performance was amazing.

I also enjoyed Beck and his puppets, and Ben Folds friday performance.

My top moment was 2004. During the pouring rain on saturday, i went streaking solo all the way around the main stage, before Winwood came on. Pure freedom, and the crowd cheered the whole way. That was my high point.

MMJ will help save music.

I am not a religious person, thus I have never laid claim to any sort of savior. My Morning Jacket saved me at Bonnaroo 06. I’m not even sure I needed saving. Regardless, I have no doubt that any serious rock fan would attest that Jim James and co. transformed the That Tent into a holy city for anyhone with ears, eyes, and a soul. I have never been the same from that moment on. Marriage, my child’s birth, peace in the Middle East, and My Morning Jacket’s 3 hour show at Roo 06 will hopefully be in the back of my mind if and when I meet my maker.

Boneroo has more class.

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe late-night blow-out, Bonnaroo 2002…my body continued to dance on autopilot for the next 2 weeks.

B-Man | 6/14/2007, 12:35 pm EST

Les Claypool’s blistering afternoon set at the first Bonnaroo. It must have been 95 degrees…

I also second the Flaming Lips late night set in 2003.

Roo 06- not remembering what happened at superjam, hugging matisyahu and quickly getting told not to, being high and dry during radiohead, and getting sweaty in an overcrowded tent to watch mute math

I second Chris’ comment: When Radiohead’s performance of Karma Police last year at Bonnaroo was surreal. Hopefully we’ll get that DVD of their performance that people are talking about.

Bonnaroo 2003, at 2AM I stumbled upon the Flaming Lips. In my state, it was truely a religious awakening. It was like I was at some cosmic, japanimated revival with Reverend Coyne, covered in blood, exercising the demons of countless man-sized creatures as they danced around the stage. Later at the show, I ran into an old aquaintance. We went back to the campgrounds and shagged on the ground surrounded by complete strangers. Then we passed out in somebody’s hammock. What a night!

Yay Rock N roll bands!

The Dude | 6/13/2007, 10:55 pm EST

I attended grad school in Nashville Thurs-Sat, so the Wed evening trip from Chattanooga this time in 2003 was very interesting. There was one youngster, riding solo in the designated right lane before the Manchester exit, that really has stayed in my memory. He mananged to have both the radio in his car and the one on the top of his station wagon, wisely tied to a random bag losely situated on the car top, tuned to the same station. Either the double easy listening, beer, mushrooms, or 4 hour wait caused that poor dude to pass out, motor running, head on steering wheel. I then realized I grew up too fast.

Radiohead’s performance of Karma Police. After they finished the song, Thom sang the final refrain again, and 80,000 people in a field in Tennessee joined in. Shivers down my spine!

Roo ‘06…Beck > Radiohead > SuperJam (Trey, Mike, Duo, Lesh)

easily the best 6 hours of my life.

bonnaroo 2004… it was rainy and muddy, and on the path to the main (was it which or what?) stage before trey came on, there was a mudhole a couple feet deep that looked like a normal puddle. anyhoo, i ate shit in it and lost a sandal, and everyone standing around laughed, and so i hung out with the crowd next to it and watched other people eat it for a while and laughed at them. then when i was leaving to go see trey, i fell in it again. then i asked where bonnaroo was.

Ryan | 6/13/2007, 7:01 pm EST

Bonnaroo 2003….The Flaming Lips blew my mind. Best performance I have ever seen on or off drugs…The best year of Bonnaroo by far.
