Hall & Oates put the rest to shame. End of discussion. Listen to their albums from the 70s and you will cry. They are that good.

Brett Anderson/Bernard Butler
Waits/Brennan, for sure.

Jimmy Page is awesome, but Robert Plant writes about Hobbits and Fraggles and such (and that’s just when his lyrics make sense, most of the time they just don’t).

What! No way could Jagger/Richards ever top the greatest songwriting duo of all time (Lennon/McCartney). This is how it goes..
1. Lennon/McCartney
2. Jagger/Richards (more like it)
3. Plant/Paige
4. Simon/Garfunkle

How could anyone not have Page/Plant, Waters/Gilmore, or Simon/Garfunkle on this type of list!!

Anonymous | 6/8/2007, 5:26 pm EST

Page/Plant, Townshend/Daltry, and Tyler/Perry.

waters/gilmour

pink floyd rules!!

Steal Dragon | 6/8/2007, 5:54 pm EST

crap, I forgot Townsend/Daltry

Top 10 should be:
Lennon/McCartney
Jagger/ Richards
Page/Plant
Edge/Bon o
Waters/Gilmour
Tyler/Perry
Townsend/Daltry
J. Bon Jovi/Sambora
Bowie/Ronson
Ta upin/John

Can’t really include Simon and Garfunkel because Paul Simon wrote 99% of everything.

If there were trios
Lee/Lifeson/Peart would be #1
Young Brothers/Johnson (AC/DC)
Hetfield/Ulrich/Hamme tt
Van Halen brothers/Sammy Hagar

whats the what? | 6/8/2007, 6:31 pm EST

Waters/Gilmore and Simon/Garfunkle never wrote songs together (maybe one or two). Really Roger Waters wrote pretty much all the Floyd songs on the golden era an I don’t even know of one song Garfunkle co-wrote (much less wrote) except for the sound collage of old people talking on “bookends”

Kyle | 6/8/2007, 6:33 pm EST

Townshend wrote all of his stuff without Daltry. As did Simon without Garfunkel.

Lennon/McCartney
J agger/Richards
Page/Plant
Tyle r/Perry
John/Taupin

Period.

marnr67 | 6/8/2007, 6:36 pm EST

The only one that really comes to mind with me is Alex Chilton/Chris Bell.

and take this from a devout Zep fan, i’m against page/plant. Plant was just not that good at lyricsm– and really he wasn’t all that much a front man but … like a lead guitarist with his mouth. Page was Zep’s frontman and he served the singer/songwriter role with his guitar… Plant is someone with an incredible range who had an incredibly lame preoccupation with hobbits and wizards. Really Zeppelin were just an incredibly talented groove band that accidentally created heavy metal with an entirely original, black magic approach to the blues more than they were great songsmiths.

I’ll go as far to say they were the best riff band in rock history, but well written in depth songs? Nah, man they’re just fucking bad ass– don’t treat Zep like they’re bob dylan or anything.

I’m also a little against Gilmour/Waters, although i think Floyd’s songwriting is underrated in general. Just because they really dont like eachother and they deny a real functional relationship. That and most great Floyd songs are credited to Waters alone with a defining solo by Gilmour to go along with it.
They weren’t really a great team, they were a great dysfunctional combination who rubbed off on eachother enough to squeeze out some of the best concept albums of all time.

Dan | 6/8/2007, 6:39 pm EST

i’m sorry, but did somebody forget to mention cage/jables?

hahahaha, lists are stupid | 6/8/2007, 6:39 pm EST

my favourites:

JAGGER/RICHARDS
PAGE/PLANT
JOEY RAMONE/DEE DEE RAMONE(not a real duo but anyway)
HETFIELD/ULRICH (despite the fact that they are underrated in the non-metal world, i still believe they are huge)

steven tyler and joe perry

Page/Plant is good but keep in mind a lot of their credits also include Jones, Bonham, both, or the original writer they were ripping off.

Geoff | 6/8/2007, 6:58 pm EST

Also, Waters/Gilmour wrote maybe five songs together. Waters/Wright almost have as many credits as a duo.

Anonymous | 6/8/2007, 7:00 pm EST

I don’t understand how Rolling Stone, a band that rightly calls Sgt. Pepper the greatest album of all time, and the Beatles the greatest artists, in all their lists, can possibly name Jagger/Richards as a better songwriting combination than Lennon/McCartney.

I’m also not positive how easy it is to narrow down the collaborations that have shaped the history of rock and roll down to just songwriters. Roger Daltrey never wrote a decent song in his life, but has Pete Townshend, the author of all their classics, ever had any real success without him singing for him? For that matter, Art Garfunkel never wrote, but that didn’t make his pairing with Paul Simon any less historic.

If we’re just talking about songwriters: Then the other obvious ones are

Jerry Leiber- Mike Stoller
Holland-Doz ier-H ollan d
David Bowie-Brian Eno
Page-Plant
Elton John-Bernie Taupin
Johnny Rotten-Glen Matlock

And I’m not sure if it counts or not, but between the two of them, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have changed the vocabulary of the modern rock song between them. Even if they never ‘collaborated’ per se, they remain the musical core of the world’s most innovative band. That’s gotta count for something.

Alp29 | 6/8/2007, 7:05 pm EST

Although I am taking the risk you may say that… ABBA does not perfectly qualify for the list and not please rd core rock fans, obviously if you talk about Pink Floyd and Simon & Garfunkel, you could not leave great musicians like Bjorn Ulvaeus & Benny Andersson.

Chris | 6/8/2007, 7:05 pm EST

Page/Plant certainly
Tweedy/Bennett- Wilco is still great, but they produced some magic in their partnership

One small point: U2 songs are credited to all the members. Yeah, I know, Bono and Edge probably write the songs, but the band gets credit as a whole. Lennon/McCartney often wrote songs separately and still listed them together. Any thoughts on this (calling me an asshole or shit for bringing this up doesn’t qualify as a thought.)?

Alpx29 | 6/8/2007, 7:08 pm EST

ABBA – Bjorn Ulvaeus & Benny Andersson – true geniuses.

So I guess Lennon/McCartney doesn’t count because George Harrison penned a tune or two.

RockGod | 6/8/2007, 11:11 pm EST

Yeh, but the same goes for Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell….. duel harmonies went hand and hand with duel lyrics…. and with songs like Nutshell and Got Me Wrong?….. its hard to argue the pure talent in this band, that is greatly overlooked and underated.

The reason why page/plant souldn’t be on here is because the rip off other artist all the time like howling wolf. were as plant is just wierd lyrics
But people that sould be on here are jim morrison everyone else from the doors, Waters/Gilmour, greenwood/york, barat/doherty, Carole King/Gerry Goffin, Carole King/David Goffin, Eddie Vedder/Stone Gossard, when they were doing original songs Axl Rose/Slash , Layne Staley/Jerry
Cantrell, Ian Curtis/Bernard Sumner, Ian Astbury/Billy Duffy

theres alot in here that arent really songwriting duos
like simon/garfunkel
art garfunkel hardly wrote anything
it was all paul simon
and townsend/daltrey
roger daltrey only wrote a couple of songs for the who

but id definately go elton and bernie

Brennan | 6/8/2007, 11:35 pm EST

Okay lets get some things sorted out first. Axl/Slash shouldnt be an entry when Izzy wrote most of the material, same thing with Daltrey/Townsend (sp?) Townsend wrote about 99 percent of their material. Can you say Quadrophenia, Tommy, Who’s Next? Also, Dave didnt write shit in Van Halen. He showed up and made catcalls. Ed and Alex made the music, that is at least till Sammy came in.

Okay, now for my list:

Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora
They deserve to be on that list and to the moron who says they should needs to get his head out of his ass.

Page and Plant
One song, Stairway to Heaven

Joe Perry and Steven Tyler
Dream On, Mama Kin, the list goes on and on.

Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen
Ya i know i am saying Sammy over Dave but it is true. When Sammy joined the band, you could see his personal style come through much more than you could with Dave.

Marriott and Lane. The Small Faces never really made it in the USA, but just listen to anything written by these guys in the 60’s, when they were still teenagers, and you’ll be impressed. “All or Nothing”, “Tin Soldier”, “Have You Ever Seen Me”, “I’ve Got Mine”, “You Need Lovin”, “Autumn Stone”, “Be Like You”, “Itchykoo Park”, “Song of a Baker”, “Here Come the Nice” and “I’m Only Dreaming”, just to name a few. Blues, R & B to psychedelic rock. They did it all in only 3 years too. Timeless, great music.

Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards followed by John Squire and Ian Brown, and Morrissey and Johnny Marr….those are the only true songwriting teams worthy of mentioning that I can think of. Morrissey/Marr and Brown/Squire are far behind though if you ask me, simply because I don’t think they really sat around together writing songs much which makes me think twice about calling them a songwriting team.

Someone below said the Gallagher brothers and dared to be proved wrong and….well…that simply isn’t a songwriting team. Noel Gallagher is in fact one of the best songwriters ever, but Liam has nothing to do with it. He’s written a few ok ones, and one great song (Songbird), but no matter how you cut it, they’ve never written a song together. They’ve never even been credited together.

Regal | 6/9/2007, 2:44 am EST

Just for the sake of clarity, when I say ‘are the only ones I can think of worth mentioning,’ I just mean that literally those are the ones that came to mind. I’m sure there are a ton of others worthy of the list. Some that have been mentioned I don’t really think of as teams, like Bono and the Edge for example.

Also, does meg white help with writing TWS songs? I can’t remember but if she does then yes, excellent duo for the weekend rock list!

Also, those who listed Townshend/Daltrey are idiots. By no means am I putting down the work of the Who, they’re absolutely great, but Daltrey didn’t write songs, nor did he have any imput in them. He gets a barely deserved credit on “Anyway Anyhow Anywhere” and on a song off of their second album, and that’s about it.

first of all, i am a gigantic RHCP fan. and in my opinion, the best RHCP lyrics written come on the album “One Hot Minute”, which people seem to hate without actually listening to it. and because john frusciante wasn’t on that record, and dave navarro was, it was kiedis and flea who wrote the lyrics (ex. listen to “transcending”, “warped”, “my friends”). though fruscisnte IS a god, i think kiedis-flea is the best RHCP writing duo, not kiedis-frusciante

The most profoundly overlooked duo on RS’s default list is Mike Lieber and Jerry Stoller, rather than the ever-overrated Led Zeppelin team. After Leiber/Stoller, there are other important duos that I would suggest, such as Fagen & Becker, Waters & Gilmour (before the former lost his mind, just a little bit), etc. But when I see people proposing Hall & Oates as the one glaring omission from this list, I begin to worry…

Is no-one going to mention tyler/perry? Surely one of the most influential partnerships of the 70’s. Once they stopped taking drugs they went downhill a bit, but they are still capable of knocking out the odd tune now and then.

Unfunky UFO | 6/9/2007, 1:00 pm EST

Richard Thompson & Dave Swarbrick. I notice no ones mentioned this one. It’s a partnership that didn’t yield that many songs but, it did produce most of the originals on the last two Fairport Convention albums that Richard Thompson appeared on. And Some great songs such as Sloth, Now Be Thankful, Crazy Man Michael, Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman, etc.

My 2 cents worth | 6/9/2007, 1:54 pm EST

Of course, Beatles and RS duos are tops…here are my other favs…love to hear feedback on the picks:

- Bono/Edge (Edge deserves more credit than he gets)
- Bowie/Eno – Berlin sessions
- Yorke/Greenwood (Radiohead)
- Dylan/Lanois (TOOM & L&T recordings)
- Simon(99%)/Garfunkle(1%) but the sum is great
- Elton John (voice)/Taupin (everything else)
- Henley/Frey/Walsh
- Stipe/Buck
- Farrell/Navarro
- CSN&Y – have to include Young here

Kay | 6/9/2007, 1:54 pm EST

Lou Reed & John Cale
David Bowie & Mick Ronson
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant

QUOTE: “Axl/Izzy so kick Jones/strummer’s butts!! Guns were more dangerous, rocked harder, sold more albums and if axl would stop dragging the good GnR name thru the mud Guns would have a much greater place in history than the CLASH.”

Haha… that’s a good one. Exactly how as G N’ R more ‘dangerous?’ than the Clash? They took more drugs?

Exactly, how does ‘rocking harder’ have anything to do with penning a tune? We’re talking about songwriting duos…not “level of hardness of the rocking.”

Geoff | 6/9/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Christ people, stop pulling collaborations out of nowhere. Ray Davies and Dave Davies were hardly a songwriting team. I can only think of three songs that they wrote together: Got My Feet on the Ground, Party Line, and Death of a Clown. 95% of their originals are just credited as Ray Davies. Also, I wouldn’t consider Gilmour/Waters a songwriting team. They collaborated on a few songs (Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Young Lust), but Waters was the principal songwriter from Dark Side on or things would get credited to the entire band.

paul | 6/9/2007, 2:04 pm EST

To the guy who said it was funny there were no americans, i’d like to point out most of the great american bands/musicians either wrote music by themselves or with the entire band. Dylan, Morrison, and Cobain all wrote music by themselves. The Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses, R.E.M., and Pearl Jam (Vedder is involved in most of there songs but the other person/people varies) all write/wrote music as a group. Alice in Chains very rarely had Staley and Cantrell writing together, it was generally one or the other writing.

And I think the Hetfield/Ulrich duo isn’t getting enough credit. I know a lot of people like to downplay heavy metal, but in my opinion that duo is in the top 10.

I don’t think Strummer/Jones is as obvious as pick as RS might think and they sure don’t belong in the Top 5 listed above. They were good, but ALL TIME?? Nope. I would place them behind Becker/Fagen of Steely Dan and John/Taupin. Both of those duos have long lasting artistic and popular credentials that The Clash could not compile in the relatively short time they were together. In fact, during the height of their popularity, they probably ranked behind Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.

The Strummer/Jones guy was probably the same one who listed Whip Smart as a bad album.

Page/Plant? I went back and looked at all my albums. There are plenty of John Paul Jones credits listed on those songs and he says there are plenty more that don’t list him that should. That is part of the rancor between Jones and Page/Plant. Jones feels he is being jobbed on writing credits. Based on the rather pedestrian Page/Plant songwriting since Led Zep, I believe Jones.

And some of you guys, c’mon. Listing obscure bands makes you hip and smart….maybe to the people described in The Rock Snobs’ Dictionary, but not to anybody else.

First I would have to say that most of the greats have been listed here already.
Page/Plant Ihave to question as has been meantioned Jones did write alot of the tunes there.
So the list has to be.
Lennon McCartney They wrote together and apart but the songs that first brought them fame were collaborations.
It would put Lieber and Stoller next because without them there would have been no Elvis. No Elvis means no Rock and Roll as we know it today, he inspired everybody on this list.
You would have to put Goffin and King up there somewhere with Bacarach and David.
I would include Jagger and Richards after these. Then
John and Taupin
May and Mercury
Reed and Cale
Bruce and Brown
and I don’t think anybody said Slick and Kantner.
I am sure this isn’t all but that would be a good start.

1) Many people don’t know duo means two people.
2) Many people don’t know that writing songs is different than performing them.
3) Many people don’t know who John Paul Jones is and why he is important.
4) Lots of people think Pete Townshend actually wrote songs with Roger Daltrey!! HAHAHAHAHA!
5)That Roger Waters is the kind od guy who might hunt you down if you keep insisting he was part of a songwriting duo with Dave Gilmour. (oh, by the Rick Wright = John Paul Jones)

Don Henley and Glenn Frey must be put at the top of any list of songwriting duos. Whether it was just the two of them, or what they did with musical riffs and chord progression provided by other band members, they time and again achieved excellence. Their success record puts to shame almost all other suggestions other than the Motown greats and Lennon/McCartney. Some examples:

Desperado
Tequil a Sunrise
Best of My Love
One of These Nights
Take It to the Limit (with Meisner)
Lyin’ Eyes
Hotel California (with Felder)
Livin’ Life in the Fastlane (with Walsh)
New Kid in Town
Wasted Years
The Long Run
Heartache Tonight (with Bob Segar)
I Can’t Tell You Why (with Schmit)

Hall & Oates are a good duo, but a lot of their big hits were written by just Hall on his own or with someone other than Oates.

Favorite songwriting duo?
How about Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye. The former is a great artist and the latter is her great apologist. Voila!

aaronh | 6/9/2007, 9:47 pm EST

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant-I know a lot of Zep songs are credited to the whole band, but alone, They Wrote Stairway to Freakin Heaven. What more do you need?

aaronh | 6/9/2007, 9:49 pm EST

Also: Brian Wilson couldn’t have written Pet Sounds without Tony Asher.

Dusk442 | 6/9/2007, 9:53 pm EST

Ok, if Page & Plant gets on this list for Stairway to Freakin’ Heaven, then let’s add Whitfield & Strong for “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.”

aaronh | 6/9/2007, 9:53 pm EST

Bob Dylan and God during his “Christian” Period. LOL!! Just kidding

Pistol Pete | 6/9/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Becker and Fagen, of course!

Dusk442 | 6/9/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Props to Niles Rodgers & Bernard Edwards from Chic.

Javier Moreno | 6/9/2007, 10:01 pm EST

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They have to write together, unless they’re half blind.

jayrod | 6/9/2007, 10:02 pm EST

What about Ian Curtis & Bernard Sumner? Life would have been very boring without the two of them.

Dusk442 | 6/9/2007, 10:03 pm EST

Even more props to Ashford & Simpson

Dusk442 | 6/9/2007, 10:09 pm EST

Roy Acuff and Charlie Rose
Lou Reed and John Cale. (Black Angel’s Death Song is not only songwriting genius, it’s the coolest song title ever)

Miles Davis/Gil Evans

Jeff Tweedy/Jay Farrar

My 2 cents worth | 6/9/2007, 10:19 pm EST

I’m suprised that not as many mention Dylan/Lanois (TOOM & L&T recordings)…Dylan is the best solo writer, but Lanois brought new mood, texture and structure for dylan…and the old (lengendary) dog/new tricks saying applies here…have to give some props for ol’ Danny boy

How about the Matrix? They’ve certainly been successful. Also, Glenn Matlock and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.

Liam Gallagher doesn’t do any writing to my knowledge for Oasis. Noel does all the writing. Also, Bill Berry did a lot of songwriting for REM. He wrote the chords for “Everybody Hurts.”

Henley and Frey are second only to McCartney & Lennon and perhaps the Motown greats. Alone or with others, they wrote:

Desperado
Tequila Sunrise
Best of My Love
One of These Nights
Take It to the Limit
Lyin Eyes
Hotel California
New Kid in Town
Livin Life in the Fastlane (phrase didn’t exist prior to Eagles)
Wasted Time
The Long Run
I Can’t Tell You Why
Heartache Tonight

Page and Plant wrote some great songs, but even Plant admits, the lyrics were weak and you can’t understand the words on most. Same thing with the Stones–great songs (amongst a whole lot of crappy ones), but lyrically questionable.

Hall & Oates have a better catalog of “songs” but many were written by Hall without Oates. Henley and Frey were a true duo, although at times had assistance from other band members who offered chord changes, riffs, etc.

There were a lot of silly answers here, or maybe I just have a strict definition of what a songwriting duo is. I love the VU but Reed and Cale never had much of a partnership. David Gilmour and Art Garfunkel weren’t really writers. Brian Wilson just worked with collaborators.

Anyhow, my picks:
Lennon/McCartney
Becker /Fagen
Forster/McLennan
Collin gwood/Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne)

Pink Floyd’s Waters/Gilmour

Brain Damage
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1&2)

Every Song on the Wall and on
The Final Cut

I mean Roger Waters would write the lyrics, but it wouldn’t have made Pink Floyd the greatest band of all time without the brilliance of Dave Gilmour’s guitar work.

Lot of youse are saying Bowie/Ronson. Can’t remember the great guitarists name on any songs from “Man who sold the World” to “Aladdin Sane”. He wrote a few good ‘uns with Ian Hunter though.

Andy Partridge & Colin Moulding from XTC wrote most of their stuff seperatly.

Strummer/Jones was my initial reaction towards this rock list.

Lennon/McCartney are responsible for more indisputably great songs than anybody else, but they don’t belong at the top on the basis of what they wrote together (very little after 1965). That honour belongs to Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

OH! And I just thought of two more no one seems to have mentioned:

Walter Becker & Donald Fagen of Steely Dan

David Hidalgo & Louie Perez of Los Lobos

… and about Harry Vanda & George Young: while they were The Easybeats and produced AC/DC’s early records, they also were the synth-heavy New Wave group Flash and the Pan from 1979 to 1985. Great songs from them include “Hey St. Peter,” “Walking In The Rain” and “Media Man”

Lennon McCartney, Jagger, Richards, Page, Wilson, Elton to name a few have all claimed Elvis inspired them to play Rock and Roll. I don’t actually think Rock and Roll was invented by anyone. More of a musical mutation of RnB, Country and Swing, with a little Jazz on the side.

dear idiots, do your research before you put posts up, gilmour/rogers did about 1 song per album(which is why waters says, great guitar player, but no ideas, which is why gilmour had to have his wife and various others help him write songs on his post-waters/solo albums)
also roger daltrey does not write songs, he sings pete townsends songs
john/paul spent the first few albums doing some songs together, the rest are solo songs credit together, to keep fans from keeping score.
also, axel rose does not write music her writes corny lyrics to others songs.

Frode | 6/11/2007, 5:25 am EST

Some strange suggestions here. Simon/Garfunkel? Townshend/Daltrey?
This is supposed to be about songwriters, not songwriters and their (talented) singing companions.

Page/Plant really needs to be on the list, as do Drozd/Coyne!

BUZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!

Wrong. Art Garfunkle never wrote a single note or word on any of the S&G work. It wasn’t until an album he did a few years ago that he even tried songwriting (with a collaborater not named Paul Simon).

“How could anyone not have… Simon/Garfunkle on this type of list!!”

See above. They are no more a SONGWRITING duo than Abbott & Costello. Great performers! Not songwriting duo.

dennis | 6/15/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Wow, i guess RS hates Zeppelin as much as I do. Of all the 60-70’s acts I had on vinyl and cassette before the advent of the CD,Zeppelin is the only one I have not upgraded-still on vinyl or cassette (with the exception of “Physical Graffiti”), I guess Page/Plant suck too much for me to spend any more hard-earned dollars on by getting CD’s of.
jagger/Richards deserve #1 out of sheer longevity and consistency.
Macca/Lennon #2 out of lack of longevity.Anybody on this thread who doubt McCartney’s musical genius should listen to his bass playing on just about any Beatles song, but most notably on “Come Together”. Lennon and Macca needed each other like fish and water.
Witness the bass playing (and subsequent musicality of Lennon’s solo albums (mostly on “Mind Games” with it’s atrocious bass playing)to see how Macca’s musical abilities helped Lennon’s material.
It’s great that the world got to have LenMac for as long as it did,but i wish they’d figured out a way to make it last at least half as long as jagger/richards have,(as long as the quality remained what it was.)Page should’ve stayed as a session guitarist and Plant should try to retrieve his oysters from his abdominal cavity, then his voice might improve.

First off I would say Elton and Bernie, and I am glad to see their names come up so many times on the list as well. 40 years together, and they still produce something as stellar as Captain and the Kid last year, which sounds like they wrote it in 1973 (around their peak time). Simply amazing.

John/ Paul, Mick/ Keith, Page/ Plant, Morrisey/ Marr were all good in their time, and it’s evident in their solo work that they needed each other.

eric | 8/14/2007, 10:33 am EST

page/plant of course ! definetely…

townshend/daltr ey is not a duo. daltrey didn’t write a lot for the who.

for ac/dc we should say young/young rather than johnson/young. the two brothers are the real songwriters in ac/dc all over the years.

Guys! Page/Plant was often actually Page/Plant/Jones and even Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham, so they don’t hold a place. Besides, Robert Plant was never a great lyricist. Hall and Oates wrote some good stuff but not amazing stuff, especially not legendary stuff. Guys! Garfunkel never wrote anything in that duo, Paul Simon was the brains behind their music. I think you’ll find that this is the best list RS have ever done.
