Rage Against the Machine Tour Countdown: Zack de la Rocha for President!

6/8/07, 4:36 pm EST

Nine months ago, we let loose a cry: Rage Against the Machine, where are you when your country needs you? Much to our delight, the band answered our call: first they performed at Coachella, and now they appear to be announcing a full tour this summer.

But why stop there? If Dennis Kucinich and that dude from “Law and Order” can run for president, why not Zack de la Rocha? To get the ball rolling, we’ve started rounding up Zack’s positions on a variety of issues. To provide some context, we’ve laid out his statement below, and compared them to those of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. Zack, you can take this guy out — we just know it.

Consider this the kickoff of the de la Rocha ‘08 campaign:

ON DEMOCRACY
Edwards: “Our job is to make the idea of America real for all Americans, and to rekindle that idea around the world.”
Zack: “Brothers and sisters, your democracy has been hijacked!”

ON HOW TO RESTORE AMERICA’S GREATNESS
Edwards: “Let’s make America stronger at home and more respected in the world.”
Zack: “This whole rotten system needs to destroy entire countries and profit from their reconstruction. It’s a system that we have to break down, generation after generation after generation.”

ON GEORGE W. BUSH AND IRAQ
John Edwards: “We need to begin immediately begin withdrawing 40,000-50,000 troops from Iraq, with the complete withdrawal of all combat troops from Iraq within 12-18 months – allowing the Iraqi’s to assume greater control of their own country.”
Zack: “The current administration should be hung and tried and shot.”

Next week: Tom Morello vs. Fred Thompson!

rage is the best band of our time. There ideals are ridiculously deep and noone truly understands what there talking about unless you devote your time into hearing what they really have to say.our government has fucked us over the past couple of decades and zack is the only person able to stand up against them and hit em directly in the chin. fuck em up rocha

Anonymous | 6/2/2008, 11:43 am EST

maynard for vp

Also, steve, though you know what your talking about.

Try not to be so smug about it.

“I was nominated for history honor and im in tenth grade bla bla bla”

We dont care.

OMG YOUR ONLY IN 10th grade you know so much

is that what you wanted me to say?

K Response | 1/29/2008, 11:20 am EST

K I also happen to be a 20 year old and as of yet I haven’t given in to the “Beauty of the free market” just because I want a higher paying job as I assume you do. I haven’t let go of values that de la rocha and other leaders of my generation had instilled in me. K, all you have done is sold out and given up hope. so in the words of Zach, hang and die.

Sam | 10/7/2007, 7:58 pm EST

What are you dumb US college boys talking about? You elected Bush to office TWICE and what obvious political or otherwise education has he demonstrated?? On that basis I’d say get De La Rocha in quick. Hey, a bit of collective ownership and less wars for oil might just restore some faith ? Stop yappin on about education

steve | 10/2/2007, 3:25 pm EST

seriously, im in 10th grade and i think i know more about politics and what zach has said and everything today than half of the people who posted on here. im also surprised that no one has said anything about the bitch anne coulter. if you think zack de la rocha is an idoit what do you possible think about her? people are begging to label this band the same way that they labeled every other great political speaker of their time, either communists, or idiots, when in fact they are neither. if any of you have read the communist manifesto then you would know that ZDLR is almost anti communist, only he doesnt speak about it. there was definitely a reason why i was put into history honors, and no other honors classes, not only do i educate myself on topics such as those i have mentioned, i actually have an opinion that i shaped myself about them. besides, there are more things people should be worried about than zack de la rocha saying the the president and his administration should be hung and shot. no where in that sentence did he say that he should be the one to do it either, which to me is something important because i believe that if he wanted to kill the president by himself he would have said it, seeing how articulate he is, (sentence structure and grammar are big to me in things like this).

NoSellOut | 6/22/2007, 4:43 pm EST

“It takes a lotta balls to say what this guys say if you are an artist.”

Give me a break. The guy grew up in Irvine, California and lives in a country where you stand in front of a crowd demanding the execution of a sitting president. He’s about as safe as you can get.

Duga | 6/13/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Zack is one of the few people in music business who actually know what they’re talking about, although I do admit he goes a little too far with his comments, sometimes (one time, regarding the presence of cops outside the stadium during RATM’s last show, he said something like “If one of those pigs puts a hand on you, be sure of sending that motherfucker to the grave”). I think it’s healthy to have people like Zack or Tom opening our minds (specially american minds). It’s nice to see some defying opinions from the belly of the Industry Monster (Zack, Tom, Serj Tankian, Trent Reznor). It takes a lotta balls to say what this guys say if you are an artist.

slouch | 6/13/2007, 11:53 am EST

I was stoked to see Rage @ Coachella… But completely let down to see all these ignorant “fans” who memorize all the words but have NO IDEA about their meaning. Back ZACK FOR PRESIDENT because HE KNOWS WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON AND HAS THE BALLS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT instead of just talking sh!t

Esteban Najid | 6/13/2007, 2:02 am EST

Do it. Vote for Zach in 08. If you think a democrat or republican represents the huddled masses you are fooling yourselves. Both parties have been bought and paid for by corporate donations. I am voting for ZDLR. Because a vote for a lesser evil is still a vote for evil.

As for all you people that attack Zach and support the system. More proof that stupid hippies and useless ass generation X americans are a waste of effort. Most of you that are crying and moaning about this article have probably lived cushy lives in the suburbs and never had to actually earn a damn thing. Guess what ZDLR came from that same life. His mom a college professor and his dad an artist. However you do not do your research, you just talk shit. Because that is the only thing you excel at!

Zach | 6/13/2007, 1:58 am EST

Tom’s political science degree allows me to scream and rap about politics like I know something special that everybody else doesn’t. My local Starbucks employs lots of people with the same degree and I talk to them a whole lot, too. Man, I must really know what’s going on. Everyone else is stupid.

Tom | 6/13/2007, 1:46 am EST

My ivy-league degree taught me how to make my guitar sound like a DJ scratchin’. Lucky for me, because a degree in political science wouldn’t really pay the bills.

invisibletouch | 6/12/2007, 11:22 pm EST

Zach De La Rocha…the wheel is turning, but the hampster is dead.

Anonymous | 6/12/2007, 11:17 am EST

Italians can eat a dick

Jake | 6/11/2007, 10:18 pm EST

zach’s just mad because I get laid and he jacks off uncle sam on a regular basis.

Loop | 6/11/2007, 10:15 pm EST

Dear Zach De La Rocha
Listen to Rolling Stone, they know what they’re saying. Listen not to the naysayers who have made posts on here.
I would vote for you without even looking at the other candidates. If i were of legal age.
Sincerely,
Loop

RenoDavid | 6/11/2007, 5:23 pm EST

Just a hint: You might have more luck finding the song Thunderhorse mentioned by going to marchofdeath.com.

Zach | 6/11/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Jake gives good head.

Jake | 6/11/2007, 2:21 pm EST

RollingStone did a great job of taking Zack’s quotes out of context. Now stupid people with little prior knowledge on the band or the speeches these quotes from him are derived from will continue to make petty insults about Zack.

Now 1. (this is directed to K.) If you think that conservativism is a matter of maturity then you need to get your head checked. Throughout history progression of society has been marked by the spread of new ideas, and the constant developement of human rights. What makes you think that cycle has ended?

And 2. Knowledge of politics isn’t measured by what college you went to or how well you succeeded there. If you take the time to seek truth on your own knowledge is just as easily attainable, so whatever ignorant notion you have about your college degree you might as well put to bed right now.

And finally, Zack is one of the smartest political voices on this planet right now. He’s been against the Bush adimnistration since even before they were in office. Zack has put out songs condeming the regime, including “March of Death” and “We Want it All.” Do you know if Zack attended anti-war rallies? Do you know anything of Zack’s activism in the past 5 years? No, you don’t, and niether do I. So don’t try to sit here and bash one of the most influential and articulate political voices in music today based on evidence you don’t have.

Zack | 6/11/2007, 1:49 pm EST

I need money.

aussie mb | 6/11/2007, 7:10 am EST

die prez bush you filthy redneck scum. die a horrible bloody death. all the redneck hobo yankee gun toting freaks that support him need to be strung up and rooted.

malik | 6/11/2007, 5:58 am EST

You don’t need answers to speak out. So: when you think that the words of one man represent the whole truth, well then i guess you could think that Zack is an idiot. But if you know that significant voices come from different directions, then you’d know that Zack’s is only one piece in the puzzle and in no way to be disregarded. No sense in writing about the broader and “grown-up” spectrum of ideas if you can’t differ an opinion from divinity K. And to my knowledge: judging on what i know about the educational system in the US (a lot) it is probably better that he didn’t finish. It is hard to keep a freethinking mind in that sorry excuse for an educational system. No disrespect intended, only my opinion.

jerryhey | 6/11/2007, 2:11 am EST

hilarious, the rocha haters are so woefully ignorant. The lead singer of a band, including zach, rarely write all 100% of the lyrics. Likewise, RATM’s message(s) weren’t 100% influenced by de la rocha. Other members, including Tom and his nifty ivy league degree influence and express the message. The sad thing is, you don’t need to go to college to learn shit. It gets you jobs, but if you have a motivation to read into the history of American politics (e.g. Zach’s adoration of linguist/intellectual Noam Chomsky, for example) you might see how one can still be politically informed.

K. | 6/11/2007, 12:35 am EST

I personally despise people like Zach de la Rocha. They make a living out of selling a bill of goods to young people - turning American youth against the system whose values of capitalism and freedom of expression make what bands like RATM do possible. When I was younger and more impressionable, I gave such acts a pass and found seemingly nonsensical ways to justify their abilities to rail against free markets, Western values, and other things that had made their success possible. No longer. To all the young middle and high school rock kids out there that are swallowing this stuff, know that chances are you’ll outgrow it, finding yourself at age 20 or so realizing that rock stars that didn’t graduate college and like to yell a lot are not the best sources of balanced information on political matters. There’s more to the story than Zach and friends are telling you. Yes, our country has many problems as does our entire world. That said, RATM and their ilk don’t have the answers. Don’t be afraid to seek out publications and viewpoints from across the political spectrum. You may be pleasantly surpised at what you find. America is still a wonderful country and throughout its history has been a source of hope for oppressed people everywhere, much more so than any rock star could ever hope to be.

bernard | 6/10/2007, 8:04 pm EST

zack de la rocha is avery smart guy. He has self educated him self very well. He knows his stuf. Even though his comment was not a very smart one but yet anger and fustration. Zack has written and said some very smart things. I think this younger generation who were to young in the 90s to know should do some research on the man and his message before they critisize him. Or just everyone in general who thinks he is another dumb artist. I support people like zack one hundred percent. But I do not agree with killng the prez. He dose not either. Zack is my hero. Peace

soundgarden was better | 6/10/2007, 7:48 pm EST

I’m sick of Zach De La Rocha. He needs to shut up. He didn’t even go to college. Ill be damned if I elect someone with less education than me. At least Tom went to Harvard.

ljs with love... | 6/10/2007, 6:02 pm EST

haters in the house!

Tom | 6/10/2007, 4:54 am EST

I can make my guitar sound like a DJ scratchin’. Will people ever tire of me?

Zach | 6/10/2007, 4:52 am EST

I’m angry and I can rhyme. I am unemployed unless I can stir up anger in the emotionally volatile, spoon-fed, middle-class youth.

noname | 6/9/2007, 11:05 pm EST

All political issues aside, how does one come up with “anal probes by barbed wire bats”? And no, it would not bring any justice. Justice is in the hands of the people, and we all need to play our parts. Will it ever balance out? Probably not. There will always be a lion king.

Mangrobang | 6/9/2007, 9:24 pm EST

RATM should come to Alaska.

OK | 6/9/2007, 8:35 pm EST

Zach is an idiot.

Word Up | 6/9/2007, 4:15 pm EST

“The current administration should be hung and tried and shot.”

Amen. The italians knew how to deal with their fascists.

JO | 6/9/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Are you trying to say that Zack de la Rocha isn’t political? Are you retarded? Everything he does is political.

T. Rex | 6/9/2007, 10:55 am EST

Only rollingstone would try to corrupt the great Zack de la Rocha with politics.

Greg | 6/9/2007, 9:14 am EST

In the past Zack did (and hopefully will do again) what all controversial and important artists do: he makes people question the status quo. Only by questioning can real change be made. Go Zack, your country truly does need you.

Chris Cornell | 6/9/2007, 3:07 am EST

Audioslave’s last album tanking + Zack needing some cash = Rage Against The Machine Reunion.

WISDKSTAR | 6/9/2007, 12:53 am EST

please leave the president position open to some who can deal with politics bot right wing and left wing, not some muscian who has as a stance, talk about running our counrty into the ground, it great that Zach can be heard and people can vote for who they want but lets be serious, we are still dealing with a TV star who was president in the 80’s who people might have loved but did he do justice for our country?

Will | 6/8/2007, 11:22 pm EST

Wow…. Edwards is naive and de la Rocha is insane. Perfect combo for Rollingstone.

wildeyedandfree | 6/8/2007, 7:44 pm EST

Even if the administration were all given anal probes by barbed wire bats. Would it make up for the crimes and injustices this world has suffered due the greed and gluttony of our illustrious emperors?
Zach. You get my vote.

whats the what? | 6/8/2007, 6:36 pm EST

1 song does not a statement make. I respect De La…I know that he quit Rage to do grassroots, real work (unlike baldy, who just talks real loudly and plays a benefit or two). Still, De La Rocha’s song sucked, as music and as a political statement. And there’s nothing political–or interesting, for that matter–about Audioslave.

Eminem, love or hate him, has done a lot more to attack the Bush administration both on artistic and political levels.

Thunderhorse | 6/8/2007, 5:53 pm EST

Take a look at axisofjustice.org (established in 2002) and listen to de la Rocha’s “March of Death”, which was released four years ago. They’ve been speaking the whole time, whats the what. You haven’t been listening.

Sickened | 6/8/2007, 5:48 pm EST

How is de la Rocha a nazi wannabe?

matt | 6/8/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Zack for president? It would take him two terms just to finish his solo album. All joking aside, I hope that RATM begins touring and working on new material.

whats the what? | 6/8/2007, 5:05 pm EST

I agree with skull freak.

But and also? Rage are cowards. De La Rocha, et al. have had six years to speak against the administration. But not a peep from the pseudo-rapper or his baldie pseudo-marxist friend. And then? Bush poll numbers drop and Dems with the House and all the sudden they’re back to save the country?
No thanks, we’ll save ourselves.

Speaking truth to power takes guts. Mocking the defrocked emperor and kicking him when down? Thats just weak.

David | 6/8/2007, 5:03 pm EST

Maynard for VP

David | 6/8/2007, 5:02 pm EST

Sorry, Skullfreak…you’re placing de la Rocha on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Nice try, though…

Zack in 2008!!!

Mario Kart | 6/8/2007, 5:01 pm EST

It’s a damn shame that I’m Canadian
