Blondie’s Debbie Harry Shows Her True Colors on Summer Tour

Debbie Harry

When the True Colors tour kicks off this Friday in Las Vegas, Debbie Harry will be performing solo for the first time since Blondie reunited a decade ago. “It’s sort of experimental for me,” she says. “I’m going to be doing it in a very stripped-down way. No big band.” Her reasons for working solo instead of under the Blondie name are simple: “Blondie doesn’t have a record deal,” she says. “I can do a solo project much more economically.” The sixteen-date tour, which also includes Cyndi Lauper, Erasure, The Dresden Dolls and The Gossip, will raise money for the Human Rights Campaign and the Matthews Shepherd Foundation. Rosie O’Donnell, Rufus Wainwright and the Indigo Girls are guesting on select dates. “The thing that startles and stuns me is that there are so many extreme Christian groups that are anti-gay,” Harry says. “I can’t understand how anyone who believes themselves to be a deeply religious person can have a prejudice like that. It’s just so destructive. This tour is going to unify people and give them a chance to celebrate their personal freedoms.”

I agree with How I stopped loving Debbie. We saw the True Colors tour at Red Rocks in June, and Debbie just didn’t seem a fit at all with the vibe every other performer gave. Great show with exception of her set. Sounded like she was just there to promote her new album, and of course she was a no show at the grand finale. Her time has come and gone, and she was a disappointment to see–she couldn’t throw the crowd a bone with at least one classic song. She needs to be replaced.

I saw the True Colors concert on Monday at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. It was an amazing benefit for Gay Rights and Human Rights awareness. Hands down the WORST part of the show was Debbie Harry. She played a longer set than anyone else, she never once, NOT ONCE mentioned the cause, she just treated the benefit as an opportunity to rehash her solo career and she didn’t once pander to the audience. She did not play one song from Blondie, nope not even one. You must know how awful it is to go see someone live and they play a bunch of songs you never heard - it’s just miserable. I couldn’t wait for it to end. Then, when everyone from the performance came out at the end and sang a song together and then did True Colors, Debbie was nowhere to be found. Why is it that she was the only performer who didn’t come out on stage? Is she too good for the cause? It gave me the impression that she didn’t really care about the cause. I have been a huge Blondie fan for as long as I can remember, I still am - but I am NO Debbie Harry fan anymore. She is a self indulgent narcissist. She showed her true colors alright.

Debbie rocks! Love her with or without Blondie. She still seems to love what she does. I saw Blondie in Asbury Park after their first album came out and have been a fan ever since.
