Happy 40th Sgt. Pepper’s: Digging Through the RS Vaults

6/1/07, 5:14 pm EST

As we mentioned yesterday, today is the 40th anniversary of the Beatles‘ landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. To celebrate, we suggest that you read the review we published on the album’s twentieth anniversary, as well as our article on the making of the album from our Fifty Greatest Moments in Rock issue a few years back as well as our extra-special write-up on the record when it was put at the top of our list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Finally, here’s an audio clip of Sir Paul himself discussing the album. We hope that you enjoy the show.

It was 40 years ago …

In 1967 I turned 4 years old in a small midwestern town. For my birthday my brother (9) and my sister (14) took me “downtown” on the bus. I had my “birthday card money” in the pocket of my bell bottoms and headed to Woolworths to buy something …

… possibly a painted turtle or some “Silly Putty” and a “Slinky”. I was already into music having bought “Sweet Pea” and “Hanky Panky” on 45. We grabbed a burger and fries at the counter and then wandered the store. I hit the “record section” and thought about a few 45’s; Neil Diamond, The Supremes, Lulu, whatever was on the WLS Chart List.

I ended up buying a couple 45’s and a Revell or Aurora model with the paints and glue (pre-Ramones).

My sister bought “Sgt Pepper’s”.

The 45’s I bought were completely disregarded after my sister played “Sgt. Pepper’s” the first time. I was mesmerized; I was 4 years old.

After all these years I still feel the fear my parents felt about my sister as “She’s Leaving Home” plays; except it was me many years later.

At the time to hear a song like “Lucy …” was an affirmation of the things you imagined. Tonka trucks turned into “newspaper taxis”. As we sat and created, we knew The Beatles understood.

As the days, years, decades have progressed I’ve found diferent tunes more endearing:

Ageing … “When I’m Sixty-Four”.
Straying … “Lovely Rita”.
Support … “With A Little Help…”
Rock ‘n’ Roll … “Sgt. Pepper’s”

“Fixing A Hole” is for all the non-conformists in the world.

“Within You Without You” should be contemplated in college philosophy courses. “Are you one of them” !!!

And then there is “A Day In The Life”. “Get up, go to work” … hurry. The news sucks, your life sucks. But wait: “I’d Love To Turn You On” … it’s “Getting Better”.

FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!

after 40 years we have learned that yes, there is an apostrophe in “Pepper’s” — but no, there is no apostrophe in “Hearts”
