She has a beautiful voice, her album is very atmospheric, pastiche, interesting. Why are people so hateful?

peppermint | 6/1/2007, 1:22 pm EST

I also think she sounds like an obnoxious person not to mention she also very strange.

love it. | 6/1/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Tit tattoos = trashy tramp

Advice to Amy’s new husband, BEWARE:
You can take the whore out of the red light district, but…

I think RS needs to stop focusing on her drinking. She’s the best female talent out there and puts all these American sluts to shame… (Brit/Jessica/Pink/Ashley /Hill ary)

I love her…she’s a breath of fresh air…
In fact, thank God for the Brits right now…I’m sick of American pop stars and idols, they suck!

Motown is all-American and we don’t have the good sense to have good taste and bring real music back!

Too bad she’s dependent on a loser dude for a muse!

I hope the rest of the article focuses more on her singing and songwriting talent than the excerpt! This is just something you could read in US Magazine; all the trash about boozing and drugging-please! When did RS become so stunned by this-find a new angle…maybe about the music-what a concept.

Wow her hubby is a Pete Doherty wannabe.

myra | 6/1/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Her album is great!

Jim | 6/1/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Her album is incredible. It would be hard to find another album released this year that’s this good from start to finish. Come to San Francisco, Amy!

the todd | 6/1/2007, 8:11 pm EST

First things first, the girl has put out a really good album. I usually can’t stand most divas or R&B music because its either too contrived or superficial these days.Sure her sound is retro, but she’s genuinely edgy and soulful.Plus the tunes really are A+. Her personal demons seem to have a big impact on her art so it would be negligent for an article to not mention them. I just hope she doesn’t become a caraciture (probably misspelled that)

m | 6/3/2007, 11:53 am EST

She is huge here in the UK and while the press and tabloid aspect of her career here is over the top(to a certain extent, not her problem), her music isn’t too bad. I’m glad a UNIQUE individual can still make it in the mainstream music arena which is something that isn’t possible anymore back in the States!

Great album, great voice, amazing lyrics, extremely interesting retro take that is its own idom. But what a booooooorrrrriiiing performance on MTV. It sounded likeshe sang identically to the album, which seemed to me a little disconcerting. Also, she didn’t move at all, or show any emotion whatsoever, and relied entirely on her back-up accompanyment for the performance aspect of the show. Maybe she needs to get trashed to appear in public but it sure makes for a dull experience watching her. I note that she turned her back oin the audience the second the song was over which may be a sign of her severe shyness.

I would go to see her and hope for a better performamce when she comes around.

JayRay | 6/8/2007, 11:23 pm EST

A singer who loves singing more than fame or money- what a concept, an artist who loves their art. Usually here live shows are great, she often changes the songs. Check out the live music videos on youtube or AOL music. She is a good singer/writer/actress and I predict she will become a huge international star because she writes and sings from the heart.

People who think Amy Winehouse is original are out of their mind. Since some people claim she sounds like Lauryn Hill I wonder if it is a coincidence or is this used as a marketing strategy by her label or management so that she could sell records like Lauryn, of which I doubt she will. To make things even worse some say she is a combination of Lauryn Hill and Billy Holiday, in what sense I clearly do not know. To me Amy is just a singer and Lauryn represented many things, here is just a summary:

• Interviews with her High School Teachers – A brilliant poetry writer, speaks with authority and possesses intelligence, very charming and she would standout
• The Producer – She has written and produced songs for Aretha Franklin, Cece Winans and Mary J Blige (The Score, Miseducation and Unreleased Material)
• On the Fugees – Lauryn Hill is very talented one of the creative source for the success of the Fugees, she proved her abilities as a true artist, can sing, rap intellectually, write and produce (the Score the biggest selling hip hop album in history over 20 million copies worldwide)
• Working with John Legend – John Legend played the piano on Everything is Everything – What he said about Lauryn during the production of the Miseducation – He was inspired by her writing abilities he would sit with her in the studio and her ideas on the songs she wrote were out of this world
• Working with Mary J Blige – Mary describes her as a musical genius
• Interview with DJ Period – Very talented and the greatest female MC he has ever worked with and an inspiration to many
• Talib Kweli – Lauryn is the one, she has skills, gifted, she gives us hope and courage
• Talk shows and Media Interviews – Journalists describes her as the most versatile artist of her generation, multitalented, intelligent, shining star, Bob Marley on the 90s, Diva of the next millennium, socially and politically conscious, a true poet, street smart, charismatic, original because she sings songs with a high moral ground, she made music history by becoming the 1st female artist to win 5 grammys in one night, very influential, a true role model, and inspiring
• On her image – Did not portray sex gimmick images to sell records or to be recognised, had that simple glamour that ordinary people can identify with, kept her natural look she was not ashamed to embrace her black roots and beauty, people of different races and cultures embraced what she represented, did not allow the limelight to define who she is, very simple and accessible
• As a Humanitarian – When she became rich she established an outreach organisation called the Refugee Project – Its Role was to support a two-week overnight camp for at-risk youth, as well as supporting well-building projects in Kenya and Uganda, She has also staged a rap concert in Harlem to promote voter registration. In 1999 she received three awards at the 30th Annual NAACP Image Awards. In 1999 Ebony magazine named her one of “100+ Most Influential Black Americans”. She was named with Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and others among the “10 For Tomorrow,” in the EBONY 2000: Special Millennium Issue. Her charity work includes some of the work she has done globally that has not been published
• Lauryn’s music – Very rich in content and very intellectual, she had so many things to say she was well informed be it socially, politically, educationally or otherwise, and she was open minded. Amy sings about drugs, alcohol, and turbulent relationships, and how this equals Lauryn‘s music it’s clearly a mystery and non-sensical.

“Lauryn Hill was over rated”

What an uninformed and ignorant comment. Lauryn represented many things with her music she wants to change the world, reduce racism, uplift the black communities and the oprressed in general, spread message of love, respect, tolerance, and very inspirational. Amy sings about alcohol, drugs and relatioships not so original and profound.

Lauryn can sing, rap, write and produce (great role model with her humanitarian)
Amy just sings(publicity whore with no class)
Amy and Lauryn is a ridiculous comparson

Anonymous | 7/5/2007, 5:13 pm EST

lauryn hill and amy winehouse are similar in many ways. An open minded person can see that. Im a huge fan of lauryn and anyone who is can tell her words are like gold. Everything she says is from her soul, amy winehouse also has the round and hollow sound in her voice that implies shes singing from her soul. despite hte different topics the two sing about there similaries unite in how the portray what they are saying, and the emotions that are so strong, you can feel them when you listen to their music.

Anonymous | 8/23/2007, 6:52 pm EST

I think that Lauren Hill haas struck a deal with AM’s people for reasons that will surface in the future. I believe its Milly Vanilly all over again!

boo | 8/23/2007, 6:55 pm EST

She does not sound “like Lauren Hill” The voice that you hear is Lauren Hill and the truth will come out real soon. You gullable people out there are the reason the world is the way that it is. You are the reason why governments are corrupt and get away with it. You are all lemings!

Jasmina | 6/15/2008, 10:43 am EST
