Jack White Scolds “Icky Thump”-Leaking Radio DJ

5/31/07, 6:07 pm EST

Jack White

Those of you adept at navigating the internet’s seedy file sharing sites may find the entirety of the White Stripes new album Icky Thump online. The leak appears to have sprung when DJ Electra at Chicago’s Q101 radio station played the thing in its entirety and it was instantly bootlegged by resourceful listeners. This really, really pissed off band frontman Jack White, who apparently called the station from Spain, scolded Electra and asked her if she was sorry for what she’d done, which she isn’t. “Someone gave us a copy of a record that we were really excited to play,” the shaken DJ wrote on her blog. “The whole experience was an hour-long lovefest for him and his band.” White’s outburst may have forced Electra to consume massive quantities of room temperature Bud Light, but her sacrifice was for a good cause as many of you are no doubt currently treating your ears to the melodious sounds of some rocking bagpipes.

Why Lay into the DJ? What is played by a station is not a personal choice anymore, it would have been dictated by her boss.

owl | 6/22/2007, 10:20 pm EST

btw for those that think this album sucked..or that the White Stripes suck in general.. perhaps it’s just that you are used to the pollished computer perfected drivel that pours out of the radio.. music isn’t supposed to be flawless and perfect.. it’s supposed to be real and raw and contain emotion. thats the point.

I don’t think this dj should have leaked this.. she didn’t make the music, it’s not hers to do with as she wants.

Terry Tate | 6/22/2007, 4:03 pm EST

If anything Jack White should have a chat with the recording studio and anyone else who had access to the tracks prior to it’s release. I think it stands to reason the album was not recorded at Q101. Additionally, DCFS may want to get their hands on the transcript of the phone conversation Jack White had with Q101 for his child’s sake. He has serious anger management issues and might the transcropt could help explain bruises when his child ‘accidentally’ falls down the stairs. The album is terrible anyway.

joe joe | 6/17/2007, 11:32 am EST

Big difference between the white stripes and Linkin Park, Linkin park got famous through the internet so they’re glad people download their music because they depend on it. The white stripes got famous by playing gig after gig. As for being a millionaire, you do realize how much money it takes to make a music video, reimburse the record companies for EACH cd, pay uncle sam TAXES, and of course bootleg copies. In all they get probably less than $0.25 per cd that’s sold. The DJ should have asked permission from band before releasing the material, plain and simple. If you were a musician and artist, would you appreciate someone presenting your material behind your back.

icky pooh | 6/11/2007, 6:54 am EST

oh my gawd, i downloaded this collection of noise and man it sounded like smeared pooh..thank the lord for file sharing and thank you DJ Electra for playing it and saving me from making such an awful purchase… :) Dont worry jack you’ll get’em next time..haaargh!!

Laughing my @rse off at the poster who thinks Jack white isn’t a millionaire!! Don’t you think he’d get himself a new record deal if he wasn’t earning a fortune from the millions of albums the Stripes have sold?

“just a regular dude” Yeah right!!

jamester | 6/8/2007, 2:37 pm EST

Who ever said that Mr. White is a millionaire is wrong. The guy is just a regular dude like the rest of us and probably doesn’t get most of the proceeds that come off that CD. I can understand why he was pissed because it may have had hidden agenda’s to play on certain dates. Basically the moral of the story is that there is no morals and we are going to hell in a hand basket. Also those dogging torrents and file sharing, are most likely to dumb to figure it out.

Reality Hurts | 6/8/2007, 2:22 am EST

The DJ was dumb to play it. Fact.

Martin | 6/4/2007, 3:54 am EST

I remember a time when radio stations used to play new music around the time of it’s imminent release to PROMOTE it.

People have been pirating music off the airwaves (using a variety of tape formats) for personal enjoyment for years. It’s only since the advent of the Internet, file-sharing and flawless digital reproduction that it’s become such a big issue because someone’s bottom-line is being eroded.

Having said that though, radio stations can and should ensure free-to-air transmissions are truncated, or contain voiceovers and other interuptions to “spoil” premium recording efforts. Digitally broadcasting the album uninterupted and in it’s entirety was just plain stupid.

BUTCH | 6/4/2007, 2:32 am EST

jack white is a millionaire and should care more about people hearing his music then selling more copies of the cd.

Nickolas | 6/3/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Every album gets leaked early. EVERY album. Wilco’s new album was leaked 2 months early, and Of Montreal’s new album was leaked over 6 months early. The White Stripes aren’t above that. No matter how good they are.

stef | 6/3/2007, 5:54 pm EST

He’s quite right to be annoyed…i heard it and the quality is terrible. The least an artist would want is for his new material to be heard properly as it was recorded..not some crappy version bootleged off the radio.

Jon in Mi | 6/3/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Elektra,

You burn Jack’s house down and then blame him for his reaction?

You know what you did is wrong.

Go, Jack White!

Marc | 6/3/2007, 1:26 am EST

Q101 played Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” in its entirety two weeks before its official release. so its nothing new. i don’t really have a problem with it but then again i’m not Jack White.

cp | 6/2/2007, 10:01 pm EST

I’m laughing my butt off at all those that think they have an opinion - especially an opinion in Jack White’s favor. Do any of you know Electra? Did any of you listen to her show that day? If not, why do you get an opinion? You weren’t there. You’re hearing the story 2nd, 3rd and 4th hand. Electra was told to play it by her boss - she didn’t make the decision herself. Also, all she did for that hour plus is promote the album’s release date and encouraged listeners to go and buy it. She also NEVER divulged the website where her BOSS (not her) got the download. I wish people would stop bitching about things they know nothing about. The album was fantastic by the way and I for one am going to BUY it when it is released thanks to Electra and Q101.

lame | 6/2/2007, 9:04 pm EST

The DJ is wrong for playing the whole album and Jack White has every right to be pissed off. Luckily, most people who are downloading the album just want to listen to it and will most likely buy it when it comes out because they are fans. Or at least that’s what you SHOULD do. The DJ should at least apologize instead of being completely tacky and pitifully trying to defend her actions.

hey | 6/2/2007, 4:32 pm EST

I don’t see what the big deal is, it was just 1 song. But i do agree that the DJ should not of played the song, but it is in the past. So get over it.

Graham | 6/2/2007, 3:28 pm EST

For those of anti-leak guys, the new album is fantastic, by the way. A mixture of their first two albums and Get Behind Me Satan, hard rocking blues with a touch of other-music-genre obscurity/talking blues/spoken word segments. Like the touch of marimba and bluegrass on GBMS, this album has that mariachi/scottish folk thing going on near the middle in Conquest and Prickly Thorn. So breath a sigh of relief. JW has dropped the piano-driven pop thing and picked up his shitty airline again.

Ty | 6/2/2007, 2:50 pm EST

hey, if i want to hear new music…NOW then elektra did her job well, good for her

Colin | 6/2/2007, 11:54 am EST

Correct me if I’m wrong, but shouldn’t the goal of any musician/songwriter be to get as many people to hear your music as possible? Does he not have enough money, that he can’t afford people to hear his record before it comes out? I’m an unsigned artist, and the more people I can get to hear me, the better. I don’t care about signing a contract. No one needs a deal to make a record anymore. Just make one, and put it on your site. Music’s free, Jack. Catch up to the rest of us, please. I support the artists I love by purchasing their records. And forgive me, but as most records SUCK these days, I’m going to listen to them prior to buying them.

Egobop | 6/2/2007, 4:57 am EST

I have to side with Jack on this one. Radio stations are always given promotional copies of music well before the release date but they definitely are not supposed to play the album in its entirety before the release date.
I have only heard the song “Icky Thump” so far and am happy to see that he is sticking to putting out music that does not sound like everything else that has come out in the last few years. There are very few bands that come out with original sounding stuff and it is good to see that the White Stripes are sticking to their own sound. Thanks for the great music with it’s own distinct sound.

mr. know it all | 6/2/2007, 4:08 am EST

First of all who says the cubs are gonna make the play-offs? Secondly if they do who cares about the white stripes anyway? and number C: what if the Cubs get into the world series against his hometown Detroit Tigers?

intheknow | 6/2/2007, 12:49 am EST

Also, the illuminatti are behind every major descision on the worlds stage, 9/11 was an inside job, JFK’s driver did it, the moon landing was staged… Much like my knowlege on the radio industry, I base my knowlege on nothing legitimate and solidify it with frustration with my own failed idealism.

T-Nasty | 6/2/2007, 12:42 am EST

Waaaaah real grown ups want me to buy something! DAD GET ME A FASTER INTERNET CONNECTION!!!!!

RyFly | 6/1/2007, 11:57 pm EST

I guess we can call her E-leak-tra now instead.

Seriously, Eleaktra, I feel for you. Once, a guy handed me a key to a truckload of iPods out behind the Apple store. I took it upon myself to go into that truck and start passing them out to everyone that came by. Then Steve Jobs called me from CALIFORNIA to tell me what I was doing was wrong! What an Asshole, right? Now I don’t even think I can listen to my iPod with out feeling wronged. POOR ME!

intheknow | 6/1/2007, 11:50 pm EST

i can’t believe that any of you actually believe that a DJ is responsible for this decision. They don’t even get to decide on playing ONE song, let alone a string of them!

The Stranger | 6/1/2007, 11:23 pm EST

The station will probably get attention and controversy might gain them a greater share of listenship in their area by which they will make more money from advertisers (by fucking over the very kind of artists that keep them on the air)

This is fucked up and I stand behind jack white. This is too early to have played the record in its entirity and it will most likely hurt the sales of the album.

RIGGS | 6/1/2007, 8:38 pm EST

Its supply and demand baby …in a month no body is going to remember this anyway. except for maybe future employers of DJ Electra; which might I add is a horrible dj name. Quite forgetable

Hunter | 6/1/2007, 7:00 pm EST

SpaceBass I don’t think he did give it to anyone. I think the station got a hold of an internal copy of the record.

SpaceBass | 6/1/2007, 6:36 pm EST

If they don’t want anyone to hear the record before its release, don’t give it to anyone. Period.

Quit whining, Jack. DO NOT GIVE YOUR ALBUM TO ANYONE PRIOR TO RELEASE. It isn’t a difficult concept. If you want it to be played and heard, give it to someone. If you don’t, KEEP IT UNTIL YOUR RELEASE DATE.

Dumbass…

cat | 6/1/2007, 5:15 pm EST

Jack was right to scold that idiot dj. What she did is unprofessional and unethical, and she should be fired for it.

jgoon | 6/1/2007, 5:14 pm EST

She should be fired. I can’t wait for this release, but I will and I will buy my copy on the release date in support of the white stripes. We’ve become a society of spoiled brats. Like children repeatedly opening their xmas presents early. Can’t we all just go back to vinyl?!

DIE DIGITAL!!!!!!!!

405bench | 6/1/2007, 4:45 pm EST

First off take a step back and look at it this way — there are only two groups that could have leaked it — the production company or the artist. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have access to recording sessions or Jack’s e-mail.

So why doesn’t Jack look at his internal people first. Then attack the DJ.

Also, with this creating such a buzz isn’t this going to help record sales. I would want round the clock radio play of my songs or is he afraid people aren’t going to like it and not buy the disc.

Either way buck up and be a man. First a lead singer of another group now a female dj. Wow Jack your really reaching new heights.

RyFly | 6/1/2007, 4:15 pm EST

All of the Q101 DJ’s were retarded yesterday and I lost respect for all of them, they were doing this just to get attention and be controversial. So jealous of someone with actual talent that you have to tear him down to make your f-ing lifes more interesting. Go F yourselfs Q101 DJs.

c | 6/1/2007, 3:18 pm EST

I heard Jim Lynam of Q101’s Morning Fix say this morning that he’ll beat Jack White’s ass! I hope he does! That punk bitch needs to get laid out and there’s no one better than Jim to do it … especially after the way he spoke to that sweet pea Elektra..

Joe | 6/1/2007, 3:04 pm EST

I’ll wait till it comes out. I have been waiting for months, whats a few more weeks. On a side note… many of the people who post here need to grow up. cancer?

Jack Mehoffer | 6/1/2007, 2:35 pm EST

hey that’s dude’s ex-wife is his sister. creepy. and look at that picture. extra creepy.

Ted the Head | 6/1/2007, 2:19 pm EST

That DJ is a fat murderer!

The World | 6/1/2007, 2:01 pm EST

May Jack White & his kid get CANCER.

Chucky | 6/1/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Personally, I’m not a fan of leaking. At least in my opinion, I can’t enjoy an album fully unless I’ve got the official product in front of me, art and everything. I think an artist also has that in mind when putting out an album, so boo on them.

baba o riley | 6/1/2007, 1:57 pm EST

sweet, downloading now.

and i too will be purchasing the album… i’m just going to be rocking out to it until it’s available at retail.

SOFASOGOOD | 6/1/2007, 1:56 pm EST

I’d be pissed if I were him…I can’t wait for the new album!

Anonymous | 6/1/2007, 1:51 pm EST

What a bitch. I’d be pissed if I were him too.

Stanly | 6/1/2007, 1:32 pm EST

Michael Jackson has a new band? He sure looks worse for wear in this photo!

Andy | 6/1/2007, 1:31 pm EST

I’m glad it leaked! Lousy album I’m NOT buying it! Thank you DJ for saving me some bread!

I'm glad. | 6/1/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Hope Jack-Off White suffers.

Mike | 6/1/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Why are we making a hero out of a DJ who broke the law…?

Sorry, but RS, you folks should not be making her sacrifice something to be heralded… she broke the law.

I wonder what the RIAA would think of your article?

HE GOT SCREWED UP THE ASS! | 6/1/2007, 1:26 pm EST

LUCKLY HE LIKES SUCH THINGS!

JohnTheFisherman | 6/1/2007, 1:04 pm EST

Losing a little respect for mr. White on that one. For someone who’s supposedly cool, calm and collected you’d think he’d have better things to do than chastise a lowly radio DJ. If I recall correctly, this isn’t the first he’s lost it either. Didn’t Jack freak out on Ryan Adams after he covered a white stripes song at a show. I think the confrontation nearly escalated into an all out brawl. Jack—You are a rock star with adoring fans—get over it. People are gonna cover your music, bootleg your music, and sing bad karaoke versions of your music.
It’s part of the deal. Don’t get me wrong, I like the stripes, I just think Jack White should try to not come off sounding like a pretentious savior of rock—outbursts like that will get you lumped in the same category as Scott Stapp. Furthermore, if “icky thump” is any indication on the direction the new album envelopes, I can see why Mr. White may be upset about the leak—a mediocre album will only sell so many copies after everyone’s heard it—first week sales are everything.

anonymouse | 6/1/2007, 12:41 pm EST

who cares.

jadakiss | 6/1/2007, 12:06 pm EST

it’s like Jimmy Page said,”the artist is always right.”

fann | 6/1/2007, 11:31 am EST

BECKY - WHO CARES IF YOU ARE FROM DETROIT????

Jack White moved out of Detroit and bashed it in the press.

Anyway, I think as an artist you don’t get the last word with your art. The people do.

This depends on the DJ: did he play the LP because he loves music and wanted us to hear great art? Or did he play it to ‘be the first.’

If I had been listening to the station I would of listened, but I am not going to download these horrendous quality mp3s that are spreading across the internet.

if that what Jack is mad about, ok. But he has not right to be mad if the DJ wanted to play the LP for us, the fans.

Wonderwoman | 6/1/2007, 11:07 am EST

Electra is actually spelled Elektra

Mule | 6/1/2007, 10:50 am EST

I’ve worked in radio for years, and record companies send us promotional copies of new CDs sometimes a couple weeks ahead of the release date. This is done, of course, to “promote” the artist’s new music on the air to gain excitement for the album’s release date. The radio station then plays “focus” tracks - nowadays chosen by record companies, unlike the good ol’ days when the jocks would pick their favorite tracks.

However, as stated earlier on here by a colleague, the station wouldn’t “track the album” in its entirety until the weekend before its release date…again, to drum up excitement and get the fans into the record store.

Bottom line is, I wouldn’t dare think to track the album THREE WEEKS IN ADVANCE - and ON TOP of that, from a copy I obtained ILLEGALLY! This DJ needs a lesson in not only ethics, but good judgement as well. I’m with Jack on this one.

muddy.... | 6/1/2007, 10:29 am EST

those aren’t bagpipes in ‘icky thump’… it’s an old synth.

becky | 6/1/2007, 10:10 am EST

As a Detroit girl I have to go with jack on this one. They worked hard to put out an album and earn a living. That bitch stole from them. I would be pissed too. And to any one that has a copy shame on you. I will be PURCHESING the album when it comes out June 19.

jon | 6/1/2007, 9:20 am EST

is there a link to this anywhere?

K | 6/1/2007, 8:13 am EST

Jack White has every right to be pissed. You know how long it takes to make a record and then someone just plays it when its weeks before it comes out.

easterneurope | 6/1/2007, 4:34 am EST

I sincerely doubt money has anything to do with this. For the stripes, it has always been about the music, something which has waved bye-bye long ago to most of today’s listeners with the advent of the internet and in combination with the need to press music onto the i-pod. i certainly agree with ham-bone. perhaps the disc jockey thinks there’s nothing wrong with it, when in fact the more innocent the d-j makes it sound, the more guilty the d-j is. respect the music and make the purchase on the release date. well done, jack.

david | 6/1/2007, 2:57 am EST

As someone who works in radio you have to get permission from the artist to do something like that and would never even consider it three weeks before it was to be released. Big fan of playing entire albums but you do it like the Friday before it is for sale. Not all that good of an album anyway, nowhere near the racounteours which I considered the second best album of 2006.

favian | 6/1/2007, 1:56 am EST

leaks are inevitable, but that doesn’t mean you should contribute.
especially if you’re leaking a 56kbit version of the song(s) which not give you the best sense of what the record will be like. i think jack definitely overreacted, she was definitely an excited fan that wanted to share his creation with the world, its hard to get mad at someone for that. its been pretty hard to find the album up until this point, so the beefed up security was working, which is probably why jack was very pissed.

i think jack and the dj should have some drinks together and let by gones be bygones.

cheesy | 6/1/2007, 1:48 am EST

Chill out Jack. People will still buy your stupid record, and go to your concerts, merchandise, etc. You will make money and spend it on a lifestyle that none of your fans will ever have.

fred | 6/1/2007, 12:48 am EST

‘Radio DJs are and will always be a bunch of fat dorky turd burglars.’ lol, classic….

lefty | 5/31/2007, 11:36 pm EST

the station obtained an illegal copy, and knowingly played it illegally. Kudos to Jack for standing up for artists’ rights. how’d you like it if someone stole your paycheck at the end of the day?

Dee | 5/31/2007, 10:37 pm EST

The main issue here is that the artist has the right to maintain control over their creation. Sidetracking that main issue with considerations of whether it’s good for fans or good for business or good for the radio station, etc. - that just misses the point. The point is that if we value what an artist has to offer us, then we owe them the decency and the courtesy and the respect to acknowledge their authority and their right to control their own creation. Period.

I respect Jack White all the more because he does not simply roll over and accept this passively, confronted with the lousy excuse that “well, it’s just inevitable these days.” People have free will, and they used to have some manners too. Therefore their behavior cannot be shrugged off as “inevitable.” People are responsible for their behavior, and it’s time they learned to grow up and accept that responsibility.

Sharko | 5/31/2007, 9:41 pm EST

Skyline | 5/31/2007, 9:15 pm EST

Record releases anymore are a joke.

Go cry to your B/F! | 5/31/2007, 8:26 pm EST

No one care!

matt | 5/31/2007, 7:45 pm EST

I think white is upset because the record was released prematurely. There’s something special about purchasing an album the day it’s released and listening to it for the first time.

The money factor is probably not a real issue for White.

Nathan | 5/31/2007, 7:36 pm EST

Radio DJs are and will always be a bunch of fat dorky turd burglars.

elliottmarx | 5/31/2007, 7:36 pm EST

The only thing truly wrong here is the presumed sound quality of a radio broadcast. It costs far less to make and promote an album than ever before, and it is true that “someone” is losing money. That “someone” is largely a bloated record company. The same “shady” institution which has been ripping off artists and their fans for years. Go “steal” the album. But when you see their show, buy an extra T-Shirt. Jack and Meg get a greater % from that then they ever would from a CD. Oh yeah, the Coke commercials don’t hurt either.

dupacrash | 5/31/2007, 7:34 pm EST

the DJ should be flogged.

hambone (the real hambone) | 5/31/2007, 7:27 pm EST

the people that say “free the music” obviously dont get it. this is an art that should be bought. bands spend alot of time and money recording this stuff. Should they all have free concerts too and free merchandise? I would be pissed too.

john | 5/31/2007, 7:21 pm EST

Kudos to this radio station! Free the music! By the way, there is nothing “shady” about internet file sharing sites. This is the people’s free trade agreement. Share the world!

rocker | 5/31/2007, 7:17 pm EST

Meg white should join Dream Theatre!

rocker | 5/31/2007, 7:14 pm EST

I am itchy…you are scratchy

jj | 5/31/2007, 6:55 pm EST

that is messed up, jack & meg probably put their hearts & souls into this record & to have it leaked WAY before its release date & before anyone can buy it is messed up.
