Phil Spector Trial Recap, Marilyn Manson Song News, Snoop Drama and More

Phil Spector trial

  • Yesterday at the Phil Spector trial, details of infamous missing “fingernail” finally emerged. The gunpowder-stained fingernail, alleged to have been shot off of Lana Clarkson’s hand as she defended herself against Spector, was confiscated by forensic expert/Court TV star Dr. Henry Lee. Lee not only has yet to turn over the fingernail to authorities, he denies even finding the fingernail, rendering a valuable piece of evidence for the prosecution missing. Also on Wednesday, jurors were treated to gory crime scene photographs of the Clarkson’s death, as well as testimony from the paramedic who declared the former actress DOA. The trial is in recess until next week.
  • We don’t know what provoked Marilyn Manson to cover Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around” but we assume it has something to do with the strange influence dating a 19 year old has had on his iPod.
  • Ex-Soundgarden/Audioslave singer Chris Cornell and Snoop Dogg are set to headline the Hamburg, Germany portion of Live Earth. Insert “If they let Snoop Dogg in the country” joke here.
  • Paul Simon briefly reunited with Art Garfunkel in Washington DC to commemorate Simon winning the inaugural Library of Congress Gershwin Award.
  • The Strokes are taking 2007 off in an effort to avoid releasing another First Impressions Of Earth

If you haven’t heard that Marilyn Manson take yet, maybe you should…he’s really sucking these days. Well, in general…and dating 19 year olds doesn’t help.

First Impressions of Earth is a fantastic album. Heaven forbid a band turn an artistic corner and not put out the same album every two years.

baba o riley | 5/24/2007, 2:53 pm EST

yeah, what the hell, i thought First Impressions was pretty solid. Anyways, what they need to do is let Albert Hammond Jr. have a little more creative control this time around. His solo album is fantastic!

First The Strokes release a great debut record and all the critics go gaga over it. Then they release another record that sounds exactly like the first, and the critics harp on them for not taking any chances. Then they release a third record that is a departure from the previous two, and critics complain they don’t sound as cool as they used to.

Lesson of the day: critics are idiots.

Phil Spector promised Dr. Lee a singing career if he hid the evidence for him. I’d love to hear the doc’s take on ‘River Deep, Mountain High’.

Manson did a Timberlake cover because he’s trying to focus on the teenage girl market. And because he takes a lot of drugs.

At least Snoop has a good reason to not be let into Germany. Cornell is going to be told he can’t come in because his music sucks.

So that’s Simon-Garfunkel reunion 86. Look for #87 to be a tour called, ‘Garfunkel needs to pay off his second mortgage’.

ha ha! Take that Strokes! You’ve been zinged by Rollingstone.com!

Tipper Gore | 5/24/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Snoop promised to wear a “Parental Advisory” label on his forehead just for me!

Don Vito | 5/24/2007, 4:29 pm EST

I mean, I am the king. Sorry, my mom was in the middle of blowin me.

Steve | 5/24/2007, 4:34 pm EST

Turned an artistic corner? It’s not like went all Kraut like Liars. They made an album of angry white hipster dreck that — to everyone else in the world who’s not a diehard Strokes defender — sounded like the first two. But worse.

stagefronttickets | 5/24/2007, 4:44 pm EST

Snoop in Germany for Live Earth? Why isn’t he doing it here, in Jersey? Maybe he’s fleeing the country to avoid all those drug and weapons charges…

Did RS not give First Impressions 3 1/2 stars in its review (the same score every album seems to get)? Don’t turn on them just because it’s cool to do so now.

oh no | 5/24/2007, 4:54 pm EST

Who needs a year and a few months of rest? It’s not like they’ve been working in the fields for the last 5 years, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. What a bunch of p*ssies. As stated, I’m guessing they’re taking time off to learn how to write some songs. It’s pretty sad what has become of bands–1 album, every 3 years. Give me the ’60’s any day.

willdo | 5/24/2007, 5:00 pm EST

I really don’t understand why so many people, and critics, seem to like that horribly boring band, the Strokes. I had a chance to keep a freee copy of First Impressions…, and I didn’t evenwant it for free. What does this terrible band do that so many people seem to like? Let’s see – the singer sounds like a dog in pain, every song sounds just like every other one (all mid-tempo, etc.), there’s nothing special in terms of musicianship (not even a lead guitar), who cares about the lyrics, and on and on. They suck big time!

yo | 5/24/2007, 5:06 pm EST

The Strokes have got to be just about the most overrated band of the decade. They came from the right place at the right time and certainly had the right look (and dated the right people) but had the wrong songs. When Franz Ferdinand released “Take Me Out” in 2004 and perfected in just the first minute of the song what The Strokes had been trying to do for (up to that point) two albums, it was clear that The Strokes were just a lot of hoopla. If you’re searching for that oh-so-cool punk/new wave/pop thing, You’re better off w/ the first two Cars records — trust me (or the two Arctic Monkeys and Franz records for that matter).

bp | 5/24/2007, 5:38 pm EST

The Strokes first album was too good. They shot their load too fast. It happens (or so I’ve heard).

Kreps Ahoy! | 5/24/2007, 5:50 pm EST

Rob Sheffield gave “First Impressions of Earth” 3 and a half stars in January 2006. That’s half a star more than Nirvana’s “Nevermind” received in November of 1991 from Ira Robbins.

bobjones | 5/24/2007, 5:51 pm EST

GUNS N ROSES!!!! CHINESE DEMOCRACY!!!! AXL ROSEE!!!!!

Don Vito's mom | 5/24/2007, 7:35 pm EST

Limp Bizkit’s “Significant Other” also received a higher rating (three and a half stars of course) than “Nevermind”. I don’t care how many different reviewers you have on staff, that is a joke.

It’s no wonder people stopped trusting RS for musical opinions a long time ago.

Jim | 5/24/2007, 7:48 pm EST

Typical of RS regarding The Strokes. They rave about the CD when it comes out so that they look “hip”, and then disavow it later…poseurs!

B | 5/24/2007, 9:54 pm EST

you all like first impressions of earth as much as i did, but because the strokes are no longer the flavor of the month, some people want to pretent like they never liked the album. i call those people weak minded

Lloyd Ostenberg | 5/25/2007, 9:05 am EST

oh, so we’ve decided to piss on the Strokes now? screw the hipsters that scribbled that blasphemy, my fly is stayin’ closed.
