The most obviously interesting thing about the Michel Gondry-directed video for Paul McCartney’s new single “Dance Tonight” is that it stars A-list sprite Natalie Portman as a gleeful, mischievous phantom delivered to Sir Paul’s country house in a box containing a mandolin. Portman’s mercurial I’m-there-but-also-not quality makes a song that at first seems to be a relatively simple ode to joy (“everybody’s gonna dance tonight, everybody’s gonna feel alright tonight”) seem darker and more desperate, like it’s about wanting to join a party one can’t quite get to. Check it out. It’s weird. In a good way.

I saw the video, bought the deluxe album. Bravo Sir Paul! The video is certainly worthy of the man who helped create the music video revolution.(ie: A Hard Days Night, Penny Lane, Paperback Writer, Hello, Goodbye etc.) The song is of course a masterpiece. Words and melody are superb. Paul McCartney IS THE WORLDS’ GREATEST LIVING SONGWRITER, PERIOD.

Great lyrics or not, he’s 65 (today in fact! happy birthday, Paul!) and still sexy, still rockin, and still selling albumns ! I’d say that’s pretty good ! No one can have a mega hit every time, but Paul seems to make it happen quite often, so what if he’s off once in a while. He’s still the most talented song writer, singer and composer of the 20th/21st century! And if you don’t agree, you can just go to you-know-where!!

A good McCartney song that make me feel happy and a cool video, that´s enough for me. Macca´s on the track again.

There’s something fun and light, and yet somewhat sad about that song. I’m not sure if it’s the sentiment or the simplicity, but it makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it.

Had a Sgt. Pepper flashback watching the video! Keep it up Sir Paul… typing faster and faster!

I kind of think McCartney’s coasting with this song. It’s alright, nothing special. Good video though (aside from the rather awkward, “oh, here’s a mandolin, now it sounds whole backing band” bit at the start).

song is catchy, i like the other single on US Radio now better. When have the lyrics ever been deep? Admiral Halsey notified me, he had to have a berth or he couldn’t get to sea. You people are fools, if Paul wanted to be a poet, he’d keep pumping out books. Tried that once, now its back to albums. Its about the music. At least you can understand what he says unlike half of today’s music. Bob Dylan is terrible by the way. I have seen him multiple times, and I have seen Paul McCartney multiple times. There is a reason that Paul McCartney plays huge sellout crowds and Bob Dylan is lucky to have a 5000 person outdoor event. KUDOS PAUL!

I like this catchy tune, and I can’t wait to hear the whole new recording.Paul has always had a way of making we fans anticipate his next release, even after the lesser ones.I loved “Chaos and Creation in The Backyard” and the buzz for the new one sounds real postive ,too.Count me in for the listening party.

Uggggggggh, At this moment, I am listening to Carrie Underwood butcher “She’s Leaving Home” after Taylor Hicks just murdered John Lennon a second time by covering “A Day in the Life”. American Idol has jumped the shark

Great Song. I’m looking forward to this album. If it’s half as good as Chaos, it will be a winner.
locustlove | 5/23/2007, 6:20 pm EST
The world’s sexiest Grandpa….lol. This song grows on you, how it gets more layered as the song progresses. Simple tune and nice guitar part. But I still prefer Bob and Sca-Jo in ‘When the Deal Goes Down’. Bob 1- Macca- 0.
chris | 5/23/2007, 6:04 pm EST
The song is good.As far as lyrics are concerned 95 % of all the music put out these days have moronic lyrics.Go listen to “This is why i’m hot ” or something by Fergie and you’ll realize that Mccartney sounds like Dylan compared to them.
They can only wish to have a career as long and as storied as Paul’s.
On a totally different note how many people posting about lyrics have tried writing them ? If they did I doubt it ever came close to “Penny Lane” .
orson | 5/23/2007, 5:45 pm EST
i see shades of gondry’s “dead leaves and the dirty ground” video
Mike | 5/23/2007, 5:30 pm EST
Paul is cool.
Aint supposed to be "deep" | 5/23/2007, 4:51 pm EST
People don’t understand how hypocritical they are…
This song doesn’t have any better lyrics than “help!” or “I wanna hold your hand” from early beatles stuff, but its labeled as classic for the fact that its a damn good song! Songs aren’t all about lyrics, and they sure as hell aint about melody either (see: Bob Dylan).
If you were looking for lyrics like the aforementioned Dylan, then get off the comp and go listen to some goddamned Dylan.
McCartney’s a genius at worst; this song is simple, yet layered musically. Check out the rest of the album for “deeper” lyrics; this song is definitely not meant to “change your life” through its lyricism, but its nonetheless a great start to a great album.
Steve | 5/23/2007, 4:16 pm EST
Yeah!
12345 let’s go for a drive was so bad.
respectable | 5/23/2007, 4:10 pm EST
word to that Bangers N Mash, I immediately thought - are they going to ressurect George in here?
Brad | 5/23/2007, 4:08 pm EST
If you think the lyrics and chords are too simple, you need to hear this song in the context of the rest of the CD, which is musically and lyrically stunning. I do wish Paul had released Mr. Bellamy or Only Mama Knows as not to open himself up to critics who dismiss this song for its simplicity. Based on the album as a whole, he’s still as creative as ever.
. | 5/23/2007, 4:06 pm EST
Haha I love that Gareth is in the video! It’s pretty cool.. definitely adds more weight to the song
Anonymous | 5/23/2007, 4:06 pm EST
Believe me, guys; the lyrics on the rest of the album are a whole lot better than this. This is just suppose to be a fun little ditty, nothing more.
brywool | 5/23/2007, 4:00 pm EST
GOD PAUL- PUHLEASE work harder on your lyrics! “Everybody’s gonna jump around tonight?”. Dang and I thought “12345, let’s go for a drive” was bad.
Come on man, you’re killing me here…
The Spector Bob | 5/23/2007, 3:43 pm EST
On first watching, the song is ok, if disposable, but the video is boring and unfocused.
Stuporfly | 5/23/2007, 2:54 pm EST
Errr…It’s actually really quite good and a lot of fun, much to my great relief and surprise.
Who cares that the lyrics aren’t “Hey Jude” great? “Coming Up” wasn’t either, and that song was fantastic.
From what I’ve heard so far, this could be the first McCartney album I’m going to buy since Flowers In the Dirt.
Rick | 5/23/2007, 2:47 pm EST

God paul is a hottie isn’t he??
Bear Pickle | 5/23/2007, 2:32 pm EST
The lyrics are inane. You can dance if you want to. We’re gonna dance. Come to my place. You can dance. WTF? The lyrics to Madonna’s “into the groove” are laughing at this song. And I’m a huge Beatles fan. He seems out of ideas.
saylor828 | 5/23/2007, 1:52 pm EST
Catchy song. Amazes me that after all these years he can still do it. Anyone think it sort of sounds like I’ve Got A Feeling?
