Exclusive Review: “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”

5/22/07, 4:12 pm EST

>> For more ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, check out the Rolling Stone cover story with Keith Richards and Johnny Depp and our exclusive photo gallery posing as only a “father and son” could.

The good news first: Keith Richards totally rocks it playing pirate daddy to Johnny Depp’s Capt. Jack Sparrow. The deep rumble of his voice and those hooded eyes that narrowly open like the creaky gates of hell make him what the rest of this three-peat is not: authentically scary. It’s fun to see Richards swagger, even sitting down. Watch him stage a macabre reunion for Jack and his dear old mum. Don’t worry, I won’t reveal her secret.

So what’s the bad news? Richards is onscreen for barely two minutes. The rest of At World’s End left me at wit’s end wading through nearly three hours of punishing exposition, endless blather (pirates take meetings — who knew?), an overload of digital effects and shameless setups for Pirates 4. I ask you people: Even if you like Depp (and who doesn’t?), do you understand one bloody thing that’s going on in this Pirates trilogy? The problem, I think, is that director Gore Verbinski and screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio focus on Will Turner, played by the aggressively bland Orlando Bloom, and his quest to find a personality. Kidding. Will wants to rescue his father (Stellan Skarsgard) from the tentacles of Davy Jones, a talking CGI fish with the luck to be voiced by the great Bill Nighy. Will still can’t find the balls to make a move on Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley, working her skinny butt off trying to get a rise out of this putz), who spends her time trying to get Chow Yun-Fat, as the pirate lord of Singapore, to help save Jack. Confused? You should be, since Jack (why doesn’t someone just tell him he’s gay?) was swallowed whole by the Kraken in Pirates 2, but he steps lively here. He’s trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker, which resembles a hallucination out of Being John Malkovich, with multiple Jacks jabbering at each other.

I applaud the Oscar nomination Depp received for the first Pirates, but the third chapter proves that there can indeed be too much of a good thing. Pirates 3 raises everything from the dead, except inspiration. A huge set piece in which a pirate ship pulls a Poseidon and turns upside down must have cost millions and still looks tacky. And until a wow of a climactic sea battle, the story plods along like a PBS special on the founding pirate fathers. Happily, Geoffrey Rush (absent from Pirates 2) encores his “arrghs” as Barbossa and shows how nostril-flaring acting should be done. This dude can steal scenes from a monkey, and does. At least Rush and Depp capture the pirate ethos that a lost boy can get older but stay immature forever. I haven’t mentioned the heart cut out of Davy’s chest. No reason. I just don’t care. Being buried in an avalanche of cliches and incoherence will do that to a guy. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer does deserve a shoutout: It takes a kind of genius to sucker audiences into repeatedly buying the same party tricks. Know what? There really is no legit way to review Pirates 3. It’s not a movie at all, it’s a business proposition.

You have good reviews but this one, you completely sucked at this. You were way too cruel to this film, how can you enjoy Spider-Man 3 but not enjoy this? Spider-Man 3 was more complicated than Pirates and you say that this movie is overloaded with visual effects? what about king kong TRAVERS? That was bloated with visual effects and DINOSAURS! Now that is an insult to my intelligence.

katie | 8/12/2007, 10:36 pm EST

First of all, clearly the public school system is in need of an overhaul given the poor spelling habits of the previous reviewers - either that or they were ‘drunk typing’.
I saw this movie last night at the bargain theater, I was pleased, there was a lot going on - long, but worth the $3. The only inconsistency was what was with Beckett just going down with his ship? After all the energy in his pursuit he just gives up? What’s up with that? He should have taken Will’s dad’s place if he was just going to go down with his ship. Anyways - it was grand. I agree it ended as it began, with Cap’n Jack in his broken down dinghy.
Bring on #4 - let’s see what Will, Liz, Jack and Barbossa are up to!!

sthiergen | 6/14/2007, 10:07 am EST

Great review!

I would have started it exactly like this: Keith Richard has by far the most logical and comprehensible role to play.

The problem: He’s got only 2 minutes and the rest of the movie is an overloaded, tumultuous piece of crap that no one understands.

The first 2 parts were great, why did they mess up part 3 so much?

Mark | 6/13/2007, 2:58 am EST

Truly one of the worst films I have ever seen, loved the first two. Great sunday afternoon movies where you can just switch off and be entertained. This one…. nothing more than meandering plotlines, completely unlikeable characters, too much going on, CGI extravaganza. I hate it when movie makers know they are onto a good thing and will churn out any old tosh because they know a sufficient fan base has been accumulated from the first two and with a little more hype the movie will make a healthy profit anyway. Shameful effort, misses the mark completely.

Meme | 6/12/2007, 2:14 am EST

I Think Liz should have stayed with Jack. We have seen the growing feeling between her and Jack in DMC and a strong chemistry. Will and Elizabeth just don’t work for me.

JRHockney | 6/6/2007, 8:26 pm EST

I thought it was one of the more entertaining movies I’ve seen in a long time. After finally figuring out what was going on in the second one, I had very little trouble following this one. Sure, it was a bit sloppy at times, but hey, they’re pirates! The constant plot twists and decent humor kept me interested the whole time. The upsidedown boat thing was a bit cheesey (a very Disney-ish riddle) and there were a few other cheesey parts as well.

All in all, I give it a B+. As far as the main review and many others like it are concerned, I seriously don’t think movie critics know how to be entertained anymore. They’ve lost the perspective of normal people who see 3 or less movies a month, and that just makes their reviews less accurate to how most people will see the movie.

trixie | 6/6/2007, 12:22 pm EST

to those who say the movie’s a disaster, too bad you payed just to watch it. come on, you liked the movie but you’re just expecting something more. i watched the 1st & 2nd movie but i still think this 3rd gives the same entertainment. the story may not be easy to understand, but i like how it all fits together to provide a great ending. at least jack learned a lesson, huh?

Justin Serrecchia | 6/5/2007, 9:16 pm EST

I have to disagree with many opinions about “at worlds end”. I was let down after watching “dead mands chest”, so much that I did not care to see the 3rd movie. Alas, I did. I was rather impressed by both the story line and character development. I would like to note that many people may not have understood the ending. There was no lead up to a fourth film. The film ended the trilogy the same way it began. Jack Sparrow sailing off in the dingy brings you back to him arriving in Pirates 1 with no ship. If you do not see the development to this plot than you may not understand how to design a story

Amanda | 6/3/2007, 7:09 pm EST

I agree with many of your statements, Peter Travers, but I have to disagree with some. As to the article? Well written. But I personally think this movie was great. I like the references to the other movies, and all the actors were good, especially Johnny Depp and Geofferey Rush. I admit, some parts were excessivly corny, but they nailed some of the other ones. I love this movie, and if you didn’t laugh at some of those scenes, than you are seriously retarded.

I really loved what I found in the movie. I went and saw it with my son last night. I really didn’t expect much out of it since I didn’t actually care for the second one too much. However, now that I’ve seen the conclusion, I understand what the second one was all about. I think it ended in a manner consistent with the characters and was oddly appropriate given how the first began. Savvy? I think it’s the best of the trilogy and I’d love to see it again. On all these negative opinions about these movies, it seems to me few people like to go and be entertained anymore–so obsessed with the big and “grand” blockbuster that will change your thinking on life. Just enjoy it. If your can’t figure out the plot, that’s a shame because it really isn’t all that complicated.

Was just so Long and Drawn out that I just kept hoping for it all to end.

I didn’t even realize that was Keith Richards as Daddy Sparrow, but I knew there was something I liked about the guy.

Emma | 5/26/2007, 11:19 am EST

Orlando was very convincing in this movie; to me it seems critics are so used to bashing him that they feel they’d lose their credibility if they actually dared to say something positive.
And the rest of the review…if you favour Keith Richard’s extremely bland and one-faced performance, you can be nothing but biased -routinely bash Orlando because all “smart” people do it, and praise Keith just because he’s “cool and rock’n roll” -never mind if the most acting he can do is smile.

Pirates 3 was a great movie save a few unnecessary scenes, and most characters were developed well. Yes, the plot required some brains, shame on the writers… This is my favourite in the series, and like Jerry Bruckheimer says…these movies will be watched and enjoyed long after we’re gone -but the whiny reviews will be lost in oblivion.

Stacey | 5/25/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I’ve got to say that personally I agree with some of the comments about Orlando Bloom. He’s one of the most unconvincing actors I’ve seen in a long time. And Ms. Knightley is just down right annoying in everything I’ve ever seen her in. Having said that, the previous two pirates films haven’t suffered for their presences in it and that is purely due to the fact that Depp is such a talented actor, in a role that was made for him, that no one could overshadow him. I haven’t seen the third one yet but I’m looking forward to it, despite some of the crap reviews. These films are designed to let you escape from everyday life and allow us to indulge our inner child for a couple of hours so really, regardless of what this review bloke thinks, or anyone else for that matter, let us form our own opinions and shut the hell up. Seriously, have you got nothing better to do!!!

Frostbyte | 5/25/2007, 12:23 pm EST

I saw pirates last night and I waited in line for 4 hours. I anticipated a good movie but i would accept an all right movie….But I didnt get either. It was the most dissapointing movie ever. I hated it and I feel like i should get my money back. Everyone became a comedian and everyone is now a pirate. If you wern’t a pirate in the first two, you became one is this.
Q. what does it take to be a pirate
A. absolutely nothing…
it had a horrible plot and the ending was ridiculous, i did all i could not to walk out. If you have not seen the movie yet….DON’T…save your money and go buy a stupid chick flick because you will have a better time.

potclvr | 5/25/2007, 11:53 am EST

Oooh, shut down.
I’m going to see the movie today, and I disagree with you. I expect it to be better than that.

FiLmErFaN | 5/25/2007, 3:18 am EST

Just to knock you all of your high horse, I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End and I loved it. Soooo much better than the 2 and alot more believable.

Kelly | 5/25/2007, 1:11 am EST

You know, I’m one of the weird ones that loved Dead Man’s Chest.

But I feel like I’ve been absolutely gutted by this one. I love these characters and I feel like I should be attending a funeral. What a waste.

Mike | 5/24/2007, 6:41 pm EST

I Think that the biggest issue with the movie industry is that they use no fresh “movies”. For example: Saw3, Shrek3, Scary movie4, Ocean’s 13 etc.. All the same movies with a different # behind it. The only differents is, they create more and more disaters trying too hard to make it better, that in the end all we have is another title. When we finally start coming up with original ideas again, entertainment will be entertaining.

Pirates 3 is the next value meal on the menu
and being that millions of Americans eat fast food even though the word on the street is its
crap, they still line up for it. Need I say more.

Breanna | 5/24/2007, 2:36 pm EST

It would be really great if film critics would use objectivity in their ratings, rather than ranting because they haven’t the mental capacity to comprehend a detailed storyline. Maybe if the critic actually watched the movie instead of looking for things to critique about it, he would understand the plot.

Coxy | 5/23/2007, 9:54 pm EST

fairness, anybody? | 5/23/2007, 4:34 pm EST

Did anybody READ the review for Spidey3 from these guys? They said all the same things, talked about all the same crap regarding stupid plot, terribly boring between action sequences, no character depth, etc.

Yet Spidey gets the 3 stars and Pirates gets “critiqued”.

What happened to fairness and equality? How are we supposed to judge a film if you can’t hold all movies to the same standards?

Kurt | 5/23/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Pirates 2 was the biggest waste of time and money, and I doubt this one will be any better.

Um, it seems people aren’t getting it. The critics aren’t griping at the movies for being complex, they’re griping that they don’t make any bloody sense, but somehow think they’re being smart. Travers is right. It’s just another bunch of studio execs trying to see how far they can make a bunch of derivative pointless scripts go before they stop making money. Hopefully the answer is only 3.

Orlando did a great job as Legolas in LOTH movies. He has the talent, maybe just not the right role. Then again, maybe he is doing exactly what this role calls for. Pirates 1 was awesome, 2 a little less, but still a great time,,,,can’t wait for 3.

sparrowWing | 5/23/2007, 5:50 am EST

Johnny’s perfect, no matter what he does. We love him and all the negativity and bashing of his movies will not keep us away. True Orlando is not the actor (or anywhere near) Johnny is, and he sure as hell isn’t as hot, but that doesn’t ruin the Pirates movies. Capn Jack is the best!! Rock on, Johnny, your fans are behind you all the way.

No Critic Left Behind | 5/23/2007, 4:20 am EST

Wow. It’s incredible how this movie series is apparently too complex for most critics to understand, what with the dialogue and plots and words and stuff, and yet the general public keeps going and keeps enjoying them! Amazing. And Orlando Bloom’s laughing all the way to the bank too.

disappointed | 5/23/2007, 4:09 am EST

And the criticism for the Pirates trilogy continues to be lame. If the movies were simple and easy-to-grasp, then, of course, that’s what the critics would complain about. As is, the storyline is allowed to be complex, characters are allowed to have criss-crossing motivations, and those motivations are allowed to evolve as the characters evolve. It’s strange to me that general audiences seem more willing to follow the details of an intricate plot than critics who frequently (and rightly) complain about summer blockbusters being too simple-minded and narrow. Oh well. At least the filmmakers have refused to lower their standards to pander to the critics.

ayds | 5/23/2007, 3:55 am EST

Pete Travers, matey potatey same thing about the Spiderman review - too much about politics of moviemaking - why not just about the movie…and the tone of the review - way way too serious, jeepers who cares if it makes money and its twisted plot (never trust a pirate) - its a fun popcorn summer movie, nothing more nothing less and sometimes thats what we want to see after a hard weeks work. Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp bring exactly that to the table -fun and cheesey lines - classic!…as for Spiderman3 way too many crybaby villians in that one.

He loves Johnny Depp, and yes, he did like the first film some. Even the second one he found sparks of joy in. Listen to the man. He’s a rare breed: An original thinker!

I’m a female and not jealous, Orlando Bloom just can’t act. At all. He’s done a ton of movies at this point, he’s trained, he doesn’t get by on ‘no experience’.

A fair comparison: Johnny Depp, when he was YOUNGER than Bloom is now made the Oscar-worthy Edward Scissorhands. And he’s not trained. And it was one of his first major film roles. It’s called talent, Bloom doesn’t have it.

Jake | 5/22/2007, 9:26 pm EST

Blah blah blah blah blah, honestly this guy seems like he doesnt really remember the other movies too good. And when a critic that more than half of the world doesnt know who he is tries to bash one of the most well known trilogies, you really gotta just stop and say…wait a minute guy…who are you?

Brandon | 5/22/2007, 9:05 pm EST

What everyone needs to remember about Orlando is that he doesn’t have the experience more than half of the actors we watch possess. He went straight from acting school into two of the biggest trilogy debuts of all time.

Give him a few years and I’m confident he’ll develop his skills through experience. Until then, quit comparing.

adam | 5/22/2007, 6:40 pm EST

Swingline Stapler | 5/22/2007, 6:26 pm EST

Do reviewers ever actually keep people from seeing a movie?
And when the hell did any of them ever make their own flick?
Amazing how something that takes months to years to make can be dissected in a couple hours, and those words are actually supposed to mean something more than the work itself.

taoman58 | 5/22/2007, 6:25 pm EST

Hiliarious commentary, spoken and written! Love the sabre-sharp wit. Pan the panner, but he’s not editor’s lapdog 4 sure. I’m sure he’ll be outvoted by the wallets of the masses. Think I’ll watch #4 on my phone.

omg what a critic. first he goes “why making a movie of three hours packed with dialogs if you WANNA EARN MONEY” and then he goes “commercial, done just for money”. whatever. i’ll go and see the movie myself. for johnny and keith.

Matthew | 5/22/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Personally, I thought Pirates 1 was a great, albeit a bit disjointed ride. Pirates 2 was just awful…all show, no go. I really don’t care about 3. Sequels get progressively worse, folks. Don’t expect much.

travers is right? | 5/22/2007, 5:24 pm EST

he often sucks off the movie execs who give him sneak peaks..but this seems like a genuine review!

Nate–they didn’t know the movie was gonna suck when they agreed to give it coverage. And, as someone else pointed out, regardless of its quality, Pirates is going to be the biggest pop culture phenom of the summer.

Rockgod–only a (rightwing) douche would question someone’s politics based on reviews of GnR demos. Surrender the fantasy…Chinese Democracy’s going to be just as successful as the war in Iraq.
Oh? And the names of reviewers? Written right below the review! Imagine that…Now if only you could get the phonics down…

Oh? And Orlando Bloom? Worst actor of a generation.

Big Nate | 5/22/2007, 5:08 pm EST

Why does RS promo a movie on their cover that they then go on to bash? Did they put it on the cover just so they could get this “exclusive” interview? Sad

RockGod | 5/22/2007, 4:49 pm EST

The leftwing rookie reporter that reviewed the Chinese Democracy leaked tracks must have wrote this opinionated review as well…

Fat Bird | 5/22/2007, 4:48 pm EST

I don’t understand the nastiness toward Orlando Bloom by critics. Is it because he’s so darn pretty? Is it because the females love him? Is it jealously because this guy walked right out of acting school and into two of the biggest movie trilogies ever? I just don’t get it.

Am I the only one who thinks he does just fine in the acting department? Am I the only one who actually likes Will and prefers him over Johnny Depp’s over-the-top and over-blown often annoying Jack Sparrow?

Why all the hate?
