“All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter’s wives.
Don’t know how it all got started,
I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives.
But me, I’m still on the road
Headin’ for another joint…”

Forget musicians–has any novelist or poet ever captured the essence of a long road trip better than Bob?

Tittyboy | 5/22/2007, 12:35 pm EST

“Turn the Page” is self-pitying crap; who wants a road song that bellyaches about being on the road the entire time? Poor Bob– it’s tough being a rock star, isn’t it?

It’s not my favorite by any means, but “Ramblin’ Man” by the Allmans is much more on the money. You also forgot two beauties by Jimi: “Highway Chile” is an archetype of the man driven to wander by the loss of love, and “Hear My Train A’Comin’”, especially the astounding live version first available on the long-lost “Hendrix in the West,” and resurrected on “Blues” is as close to a modern reincarnation of a black, psychedelic Hank Williams as we are ever likely to see.

Timmay | 5/22/2007, 2:35 pm EST

“Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” -Not the Sly Stone version, which is good… but the Vanilla Ice cover of it… which is VERY underrated. Period. End Of Story. To whoever is reading this, YOUR favorite band SUC*S.

Gimme the keys to my ‘vette, put me on I90 headding west on a nice summer day, and put my WHAM ‘make it big’ CD in the stereo. Best driving song- Carless Whisper. Anybody second that?

Wait till the sunset, then put on “Bad” by U2. You won’t be disappointed. It’s great after a long day of driving.

Folks, heres the deal. ‘Chevy Van’ by Sammy Johns is the best driving song ever. By the way, I am driving AND typing this on my laptop at the same time, here in South Dakota. So do as I say, not as I do.

brian | 5/22/2007, 6:20 pm EST

Beverly hills cop theme.

End of topic

AHA | 5/22/2007, 7:53 pm EST

Not a bad list but I didn’t see a lot of these songs being voted for during the poll. I am sure Deep Purple got more votes than the Dixie chicks, more than a lot of these songs actually. Oh well I guess RS does what it wants in the end. I suppose they never listened to Machine Head by DP, strictly Smoke on the water fans. hmm?

Ryan | 5/22/2007, 7:55 pm EST

“Beverly hills cop theme.”
Trevor is right, ‘Axel F’ by Harold Faltermeyer is an outstanding road trip song.

Karen | 5/22/2007, 8:16 pm EST

American Pie, not the original but the cover by Madonna. Worst. Cover. Ever. Why? Makes you drive to your destination faster so her cover of it will be over.

Leslie | 5/22/2007, 8:20 pm EST

‘Pumps and a bump’ -MC Hammer.

Joe Mahma | 5/22/2007, 8:23 pm EST

So many idiots that can’t follow a simple theme…Trevor…Suzanne! Geez.

1st point) Radar Love s/b the defining song of the genre

2nd) Many obscure references though while on the topic of driving aren’t really driving songs i.e. no energy to keep the driver pumped to cover more miles

3rd) Personal fave…
La Grange – ZZ Top

Captain McCallister | 5/22/2007, 8:43 pm EST

Ahoy, Mates. When I be travellin the high seas, no song makes for a better water trip than me and the crew singing a hearty rendtion of the ‘Pirates of Penzance’ theme. Here be just a snippet for you, as you batten down your mizzenmasts tonite:

Oh, better far to live and die
Under the brave black flag I fly,
Than play a sanctimonious part,
With a pirate head and a pirate heart.
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where pirates all are well-to-do;
But I’ll be true to the song I sing,
And live and die a Pirate King.

John R. | 5/23/2007, 9:17 am EST

Great call on Roadrunner. I thought everyone had forgotten that song. The only one I would add is Depeche Mode’s “Behind the Wheel,” particularly the version which combines it with “Route 66.” It has a great circular driving beat which propels you along.

Who can take a road trip on just 25 songs? It’s a big country out there and an even bigger world! Even with $4.00 a gallon gas, an 8 hour road trip is about the minimum for anyone not from NYC. I could not narrow it down to the top 100.I guess tha’s what editors are for.

Bob Brozman & Jeff Lang “61 Highway”

Audioslave “I am the Highway”

This type of list is subjective, I would listen to the list I made driving across the west. But in The northeast I would be listening to more rock and jazz. Kinda depends on where you’re driving.

seriously, i was having plenty of fun reading through the choices as i pick songs for a bachelorette party, but when i got to “shaquille o’neal” i actually spit a little and laughed so hard – for a good 5 minutes just sitting here by myself – that i know a little pee had to have come out
thank you for absolutely rocking my day with that addition, thank you.

The Byrds-”Wasn’t Born To Follow”
No other song has the vibe and groove that this song has. It instantly makes you think of driving through an open country side or through beautiful scenery with its lyrics as well as the music itself.

Once again Rolling Stone makes a p.o.s. list of greats. This is almost as worse as the greatest guitar players of all time list..”We took your nominations and toiled away to narrow the whole thing down.” What a crock of shiite!

I think you folks who are saying others opinions for good driving songs are stupid or silly… are in fact stupid or silly yourself. Everyone has there own motivational/pump-up music and Ive actually learned write a few new songs from this. and it helps because I am a truck driver and drive a lot. BTW one of my favorites is I’m a Road Hammer by The Road Hammers. And whoever it was that talked about the summer of 1997 and said it was pretty sweet. You rock. :)

It saddens me that our favorite song is not on the list. This song begins all of our family vacations and puts us in the mood for whatever is on the road ahead…Holiday Road! Turn it up loud enough and it drowns out the screaming in the backseat.

Woogs | 4/30/2009, 8:16 am EST

Chris Rea with Road To Hell (Especially the second part) is a must on the list imo, and so is “Walk Of Life” with Dire Straits:P

And, for a little bit of speed, “Push It To The Limit”, the Scarface version, Paul Engemann and someone else…

chad | 6/10/2009, 2:52 pm EST

“Jump in the fire”- Harry Nilsson, “Then I met you”- Proclaimers, “Baba O’Riley”- The Who, and if you are Slap Shot fan there is always “Right back where we started from”- Maxine Nightingale. :-)

What about More than a Feeling

King of Road Songs | 10/11/2009, 10:48 pm EST

To re-enforce P. Bogan suggestion of Little Feat “willin” this is a top five road song period..end of story. I like driving fast, stupid fast, (which is kinda a cool name for a song) so here are some road songs that suplement my road rage and road song appetite. Why these songs were not mentioned b4 I haven’t a clue, but believe me, these are the songs for the road my little face bot interweb bloggers.

“Mean Streets” – Van Halen (Don’t even think of driving slow to this road song)

“I Know A Little” Lynyrd Skynyrd – ALL SKYNYRD songs are good road songs, this one is a top 3 Skynyrd road songs.

CANDY – Iggy Pop – This is a fast, reliable driving road song people, trust me.

“GODZILLA” – Blue Oyster Cult is a fast driving road song folks

“Fly Like an Eagle” This road song is in its own class..why? I’ll tell you why…two completely different songs with the same title yet powerful fast road songs….

“Fly Like an Eagle” – by Steve Miller Band AND
“Fly Like an Eagle” – Marshall Tucker – album:Carolina dreams
Yes it’s true!!! These are both top 20 all time road songs..

anyone who tells you “Fly Like an Eagle” by Steve Miller is not a top five road song probably drives a 4-cylinder car.

While were in the south…
You ever heard of Molly Hatchet? For chripes sake folks…these are road songs…”Flirtin with Disaster”, “Gator Country”, “Whiskey Man”,,,Gen-you-ine , made in the USofA road songs….

More? ok

Mr frank Zappa (RIP Frank, we miss you) Try a little number called “Tell me you love me” or from Joes Garage, “Wet – T- Shirt Contest” the guitar solo in this song will put you in the back of that pickup truck in front of you cause you just pushed the gas pedal thru the floorboard. “Zomby Woof” at volume 11 on your Alpine Stereo not forgetting the seperate amps for each speaker pairs will get you a speeding ticket…but who cares, you just discovered a good road song.. and last but not least for this post believe me I have a LOT more…Mr lowell George (RIP Lowell, we miss you…how are Ronnie Vsn Zandt, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Frank Zapaa doin?) Lowell George front man, song writer for Little Feat, spark these tunes up when you pass Denver heading up the Rockies, past Evergreen, then on to the ski resorts…try “The Fan” live version only, this will get you to Leadville in …oh 30 minutes, “Day or Night”
and “Fat Man in the Bathtub” is probably the number one sing-a-long, road song….anyway…the king has spoken, good night and good luck…

Robert | 10/23/2009, 3:10 pm EST

Between the list and the posts I think most are covered, except…

Cars – Gary Numan
East Bound and Down – Jerry Reed
