5/18/07, 5:00 pm EST

Best Road Trip songsIt’s May 18th and we’re getting into serious springtime action. The air is warm, the sun is bright, the rainstorms are torrential. This weather rocks! In celebration of life on the road, we’re making this weekend’s rock list all about the best road trip songs ever. Here are five of our selections. Which would you nominate?

Running On Empty – Jackson Browne (the song and album go with me on lots of road trips). It’s the rarest of “live” albums…because it is not a greatest hits rehash. It was original material written about a musician’s life on the road…recorded at concerts, sound checks, in hotel rooms, and on a tour bus. The ultimate “road” album.

“Nothin But a G thang!” Rap doesnt age well, because of its simplicity, musically speaking. To be honest even when I liked that song in 93′ or whatever it didnt strike me as a “road trip” song.

Show me how to live – Audioslave

Lumpy | 5/20/2007, 5:29 am EST

The Black Crows, “Wiser Time”, that song is just sooo chiiiiijjll. ( But “Descending” would work just as well in the Deep South, but in a different way. )

Aretha Franklin “Freeway Of Love” ( Also Aretha Franklin / George Michael, “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” works just as well! )

Unkle / Ian Brown, “Be There” ( more urban )

U2, “Lemon”

Fleetwood Mac, “Everywhere”

…it all depends on where you are. Some songs work everywhere, some songs work better in the city, some better in the country.

Tom Cochrane? Is that a joke? When your song is suitable to be remade by Rascal Flatts, there’s a problem.

ROAD SONGS:

“Copperhead Road” and “Guitar Town” by Steve Earle – basically his first three albums

Any Petty… “Runnin’ Down A Dream” is greatest among equals in this category.

“I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash

“Train, Train” by Skynyrd

“Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” by Lucinda Williams

“Taking the Long Way” by Dixie Chicks

at the end of your journey: “Homeward Bound” by Simon and Garfunkel

SPECIFIC: for driving through a city at night “Lights” by Journey. though I know its hypocritical given the earlier tom cochrane comment

From here, it devolves into specific regions and times and countries by song.
