Weezer: Album Six In The Works?

5/15/07, 5:47 pm EST

Weezer, Album Six, rolling stoneWe were curious/suspicious when we got a tip that the url albumsix.com rerouted to the official Weezer web site, Weezer.com. As many of you know, the band famously went on hiatus following the release of their fifth album, Make Believe. When he graduated from Harvard and got married, we figured we’d heard the last of Rivers Cuomo for at least a little while. But then a solo demo for Cuomo’s song “Pig” leaked. And now, with this cryptic rerouting link, we ask the question: Is a new Weezer album on the horizon? We did some research.

According to a domain search, the AlbumSix web site was registered to Interscope Records and not some overzealous Pinkerton fan. The conspiracy theorists will argue “Weezer is on Geffen, not Interscope, duh.” Well, they’re sort of right. Both Geffen and Interscope are bundled under the giant Universal Media Group umbrella, so the plot remains thick.

A query to Weezer publicist Jim Merlis resulted in his insistence that “the band didn’t do this [albumsix.com].” Conclusive…but vaguely hopeful. OK, fine, the band didn’t create the page. (Cuomo went to Harvard but we doubt he knows HTML.) But the question remains: Are there signs that Weezer is prepping a new record? They are under contract for two more albums. Either way, we’ll keep you updated as to whether this recent revelation is truth or hoax.

I really do.

If he’s gonna write more crappy pop ditties, why doesn’t he stay on his island in the sun? If he’s gonna bring the Pinkerton, then welcome back Rivers…you little freak you.

SWEET | 5/15/2007, 6:42 pm EST

As long as it doesn’t have songs like Beverly Hills or We are all on drugs. Horrible songs

david | 5/15/2007, 6:43 pm EST

come on even his pop songs are better than ALL the pop and almost ALL or rap thats popular nowadays, so unless its like, an acapella album I`m happy to hear it.besides, I actully like pretty much every weezer single, period.

rocker | 5/15/2007, 7:03 pm EST

rivers is cute…naked

craigers | 5/15/2007, 7:11 pm EST

it could be a new song for a greatest hits record.

Eric con queso | 5/15/2007, 7:38 pm EST

HTML is the first programming language most people find easy enough to pick up…Rivers seems like a reasonably tech-savy punk geek…why would you assume that he wouldn’t know HTML?

I find it hard to believe that ANY Harvard graduate wouldn’t know HTML.

and I like toast.

spence | 5/15/2007, 8:02 pm EST

If Weezer are serious about another album, they need an inventive, aggressive producer to shake them in new directions, like Daniel Lanois, Nigel Godrich, or Jon Brion. Odd choices, I know, but Rivers needs to stretch.

jill hives | 5/15/2007, 8:06 pm EST

lenscrafters.

Mike | 5/15/2007, 8:25 pm EST

it better be better than make believe, that album stunk

Everyman | 5/15/2007, 9:16 pm EST

Weezer needs Matt Sharp. Until he is back in the fold Weezer will continue to sound like the last three albums. It appears as though the Weezer all of the fans love is dead. I am also pretty sure that the band members outside of Rivers hate their own music.

jdunn56 | 5/15/2007, 9:56 pm EST

everyman, could not agree more, Matt Sharp brought something very, very special to this band. bring him back!

Markus | 5/15/2007, 10:03 pm EST

It would be great if Matt Sharp came back, but that’s probably not going to happen. Still, I’d be happy if they released another album as good as the Green Album. I know a lot of people hate that one, but I think it’s because they were hoping for Pinkerton II. On its own merits, it’s a great and vastly underrated album. Maladroit was where they started to get really awful (although the first two singles were good), and Make Believe…ugh. The less said about that monstrosity, the better.

I don't know | 5/15/2007, 10:33 pm EST

If you bundle up all their records, they have alot of really good parts of songs but nothing really stands out… Pinkerton, I do not understand at all, but parts from the other one’s fine, I guess. I am just baffled as to how Weezer still matter in any respect, pretty savvy. I think of bands from when they started and every one I can think of is better, Local H for instance is amazing, and in obscurity, now. Oh well, Matt Sharp is tight though, he was smart to leave. He would be smart to come back business wise now, but he was smart to leave otherwise. Sponge is way tighter.

Jah-red | 5/15/2007, 11:09 pm EST

Anything Weezer puts out will be better than 90% of the crap that is out there now.

Richard | 5/16/2007, 1:08 am EST

They’re last album was terrible, I would not expect much more from a new one.

Richard | 5/16/2007, 1:09 am EST

Their last album was terrible. This one would likely follow suit.

jap guy | 5/16/2007, 1:36 am EST

yeah,they need matt sharp…

jeebus | 5/16/2007, 2:16 am EST

well, im going to go out on a limb and say that i thought maladroit was a great album…i’d like to hear more stuff like that and less like “beverly hills,” etc…

wasnt matt sharp just the bass player? y’all just thought he was cute.

Dexter | 5/16/2007, 2:52 am EST

Guys, come on.. Make Believe is their best album to date.

baba o riley | 5/16/2007, 6:51 am EST

maladroit was actually pretty sweet, imo. make believe was pretty lame except for a few decent tracks. i liked “you really freak me out.”

they need to also release Songs from the Black Hole. that would rock my socks.

baba o riley | 5/16/2007, 6:54 am EST

oh yeah, and they totally need to get matt sharp back. just listen to Return of the Rentals. It sounds like a long-lost Weezer album. Hell, Pat Wilson did the drumming on it.

Franko Tanko | 5/16/2007, 9:06 am EST

Can someone tell the nerd to change glasses?

matt | 5/16/2007, 9:15 am EST

The Blue album and Pinkerton are the only CDs of their’s that are relevant. The rest of the stuff is just pop. The previously mentioned albums we weird and dark.

The Seeker | 5/16/2007, 9:39 am EST

All this “bring Matt back” business really reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age – “bring Nick back.”

Don Vito | 5/16/2007, 10:02 am EST

but Franko Tanko…. he looks just like Buddy Holly

Jacob | 5/16/2007, 10:45 am EST

yes, pinkerton and blue are genius…..but maladroit and make believe are pretty damn good albums. take a 2nd listen to “freak me out” on make belive…..it’s fantastic, as is “hold me” and a few others. i fail to see how hold me is much different from the pinkerton songs. if that song was on pinkerton….people would be praising it as a masterpiece……i don’t get all the negativism amongst hardcore weez fans.

“so, i am going to the doctorate, right? and he is telling me i have this problem with my fronthead….when i towch it is makes a sound like thias: CLONK!”

whatever | 5/16/2007, 11:05 am EST

everyone who says they dont care is still going to buy the album. they bought green. they bought maladroit. they bought make beleive. they will buy the sixth album because they are ging to enjoy it even if they will never admit it to themselves.

and no, i think bringing matt back is a terrible idea, considering he is still with the rentals, who are amazing and recording their third album.

Franko Tanko | 5/16/2007, 12:22 pm EST

still geekoid to me

Don Vito | 5/16/2007, 1:08 pm EST

he dont care what you say about him anyway..he dont care about that!

BusinessReplyMail | 5/16/2007, 4:57 pm EST

yes.

weeeeeezer | 5/16/2007, 5:04 pm EST

An album six is in the works, but who knows when it will actually come out. Maybe ‘Make Believe’ wasn’t like the Blue Album or Pinkerton but Rivers is areally intelligent, smart, talented, good songwriter who really looks at the composition of the music. And enough with bringing Matt Sharp back…PLEASE! Scott.. you are a great bass player!! you are awesome!
Go weezer!!

BusinessReplyMail | 5/16/2007, 5:08 pm EST

matt sharp does return for a track (for subliminal messages asking you to buy his next record)

Don Vito | 5/16/2007, 5:20 pm EST

Hey, anybody feel like kicking me in the apple bag?

BusinessReplyMail | 5/16/2007, 5:33 pm EST

shore!

Apologies to Don Vito | 5/16/2007, 5:57 pm EST

Don did not make the apple bag comment, I did. I’m truly sorry to Don.

ben | 5/16/2007, 8:24 pm EST

If Weezer’s Sixth Album is going to sound like “Pig” then I think it will be thier best since blue.
Rock-On Weezer!

Your Mom | 5/17/2007, 12:05 am EST

I think Make Believe was a great album minus 2 tracks. As far as the 6th album…I’ll be the first one in line to buy it the day it comes out.

I’m hoping that a new album means some tour dates!!!

Bangers-N-Mash | 5/17/2007, 12:08 am EST

Ehh… just make it hook heavy and it will sell. His wife needs to divorce him and we’d get an excellent album.

marnr67 | 5/17/2007, 10:11 am EST

there are pretty terrible songs on Make Believe… “Beverly Hills” being one of them. Seriously, anyone who’s going to argue for the integrity of the last 3 albums needs to pull their heads out of their ass.

Dr. Ralph | 5/17/2007, 10:34 am EST

How about the hit “We are all in love” that started out on the album as “We are all on drugs”? Killer song with Weezer’s typical irreverence. Too bad they didn’t change the lyrics before they released the album . Then again… I like “We are all on drugs” better!

Don Vito | 5/17/2007, 11:50 am EST

no problem … Icould use a kick in the apple bag!

staindpearlygirl | 5/19/2007, 6:38 pm EST

I really love “the sweater song” and various tunes of Weezer. I could be down for a new cd by them.

chansen | 5/19/2007, 8:33 pm EST

Mofoid | 5/30/2007, 12:42 am EST

I’m not surprised by this by this at all. When Rivers was making demos for Make Believe(blah!!), he said he had enough songs to make three albums. They’ll probably just churn out some old demos and call it an album, then Rivers, Scott, Patrick, and Buckethead (Because Brian will be to busy with side projects or whatever) will go on a couple quicky tours, I’ll go see em play though, I guess…

dssd | 5/31/2007, 2:19 am EST

sddsds

shut up | 6/1/2007, 2:57 pm EST

i wish everyone would quit saying that make believe was so terrible. ok, so maybe it wasn’t as good as the rest of their albums, but they are weezer, and if you’re a fan of them, why are you saying the album sucked?? and i bet a lot of us couldn’t write songs even half as good as them…they’re under geffen’s name for christ’s sake! so they must not suck, even now.
but i could definitely go for a 6th album…

mandy | 6/1/2007, 7:06 pm EST

i rele hope weezer does come out w/ a new album! i sure do miss them.

rivers freak | 6/2/2007, 3:39 pm EST

personally, make believe from a musical standpoint is amzing. most of the melodies are just plain beautiful and that lyrics have so much meaning. but yes…pinkerton is God. make beleive would be #2 or #3 though…definitley.

go for album 6, it should be great!!!

shastasheen | 6/17/2007, 9:02 pm EST

in my opinion, weezer can do no wrong.

if album six was Rivers chanting,i’d buy it because i’m a loyal fan who thinks Mr. C. is a musical genius. Yeah, maybe Make Believe wasn’t as great as Pinkerton or Blue, but it wasn’t terrible.

Chante' | 6/25/2007, 5:57 pm EST

I dont care what they come out with next. Just as long as they dont all together dissapear. I miss Weezer and all the sneaky nerdiness that comes with them.

6th album | 6/26/2007, 2:06 am EST

there is a six album coming out!! it was no hoax. yay for =w=!!!

greg | 6/26/2007, 9:45 pm EST

i don’t care how many more albums come out, nothing is going to take back the fact that they sold out with “make bullshit”

how about they release the songs from the blackhole instead of getting on MTV and having little girls from orange county be their fans. now THAT’S weezer =w=

Here’s a list of their albums from best to worse ne debating it…
1. Blue
2. Green
3. Make Believe
4. Maldroit
5. Pinkerton

If blue and gree was a one alvum double disk it could be the greatest album ever made!! I can’t wait for a sixth album weezer rules!

threechordme | 7/19/2007, 2:16 pm EST

well as weezer has very little control over their website now i doubt it was them

i really wish they would have more control over what was on that site like they used to

frankly | 8/27/2007, 3:14 pm EST

pinkerton and the blue album are still the only two things they have put out that are worth anything. amazing they still have a record deal after what they’ve done so far this millennium.

vanesa flores | 10/1/2007, 12:30 pm EST

I Reeeeealy do!

The scoop is... | 1/23/2008, 1:49 am EST

lf anyone has noticed, Weezer only plays with four members. They should expand the band. Keep Scott, get Matt back, and Mikey, and Jason. That’s Weezer! Matt Sharp isn’t just the only guy that left, you know. We need Mikey Welsh and Jason Cropper. Yet I’m a little disappointed that Jason left during the blue album. :{

The scoop is... | 1/23/2008, 2:10 am EST

And another thing, Make Believe wasn’t that bad. If you want proof that it wasn’t bad, check out the music video to Beverly Hills. Two words! “Playboy mansion!” That’s where it was filmed. =w=

otto what'sHisFace | 1/23/2008, 2:47 am EST

“Take my picture by the pool.” I honestly had nightmares. Thanks Rivers! You ruined a perfect situation. Now my automobile is a piece of crap. (I’m sorry, I’m trying to make Make Believe stand out.) FYI,Matt Sharp needs “return of the weezer,” instead of “return of the shitty rentals.”

Loid | 1/23/2008, 3:09 am EST

Who the hell is Don Vito? I have to ask?

none | 2/1/2008, 11:17 pm EST

how can all of you rag on rivers like all his music is shit. well sure make believe was pretty crappy. but the green and blue albums are classics. so shut up and admit that you love rivers and he he stopped writing music you would be pissed.

Rael | 5/14/2008, 3:02 am EST

great!i love them like crazy“
