Rolling Stone Talks to Linkin Park About Their New Album, Tour With My Chemical Romance

5/14/07, 6:09 pm EST

Linkin Park stopped by the Rolling Stone offices for lunch on Friday to talk about their new album, Minutes to Midnight, which drops tomorrow.

Linkin Park frontmen Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda also held a press conference last Monday at the Museum of Television and Radio to announce their Projekt Revolution tour line-up, which includes My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Placebo, among others. After the press conference we chatted with Shinoda, Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance and Matt Rubano from Taking Back Sunday about Projekt Revolution fans becoming one big happy family.

Why is everyone trashing MCR?Gerard Way (the dude with my chems) Isn’t even ugly. So I’m taking out a Mother qoute that everyone has heard. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say any thing at all.” So guys in english that means stop trashing MCR! There a really good band, if you don’t like then dont trash them you’ve probly never listened to their music. Or atleast read some of their lyrics!

I agree, insomniac. I have been hard pressed to find quality music in recent years. However, I took my daughter and 6 of her friends to see My chemical romance, Taking back sunday, Rise against, and Underoath in March as a christmas present. I have to say, my husband (who is a drummer and critical rock purist) and I were caught by surprise and had an EXCELLENT time! The show was amazing. My chemical romance put on one hell of a show! 17 songs straight! The lights, pyrotechnics, theatrics, rotating drum set up, sound, energy, it was awesome and very entertaining. They definately gave everyone their money’s worth, which is lacking in today’s shows. My husband said he hasn’t seen a “real” performance with such presence and energy like that since he saw Queen-Night at the Opera in the round. Now that’s entertainment at it’s best! I was impressed enough to now call myself a fan. MCR brings what is lacking in most bands today, Performance. They gave a well rounded show with all of the elements a live show should have. Unlike the recent TOOL show in April, What a dissapointment that was!!!!!!! To all of you who have nothing but negative things to say, I say, get off your ass and make something better then! Rock needs a serious jolt in the arm, so instead of complaining about it, get out there and change it! Maybe you should check out the live show before you form an opinion, you just might be surprised like we were. An open mind is a terrible thing to waste!

Insomniac | 5/17/2007, 3:32 pm EST

not a huge linkin park fan, but mcr put on one hell of a show whether you like them or not.

Bleedin' eyes | 5/17/2007, 1:01 pm EST

their music (of linkin park) flow in my viens.

Douchbag | 5/16/2007, 1:43 pm EST

why are you mouthin Styper! Bow down son, Bow down!

Faint | 5/16/2007, 1:21 pm EST

My Chemical Romance has not yet put out ONE quality song. Are we now calling every talentless act musicians simply because they hold instruments, wear black, and talk pretentiously?

I’m sure they will be fondly remembered in years to come as their albums are occasionally removed from the dustbin of music history and held up for ridicule on VH1 specials alongside Milli Vanilli and Stryper.

Douchbag | 5/16/2007, 10:09 am EST

Share the excitement? You obviously have never been to a real concert or listened to real music, how excited can one possibly be towards mainstream rock music and MCR, a group that follows in the footsteps of Kiss, puts on a visualy show to “make up” for the lack of talent and musicianship.

wever | 5/16/2007, 2:02 am EST

you guys are so cruel. MyChem and LP are two the best bands today and i’m sure Projekt revolution will be the most massive event this summer.

rachel | 5/16/2007, 1:07 am EST

for all the people making negative comments: if you don’t like the bands why don’t you take that negative energy and go use it for something constructive? better yet, stop dwelling on things that you don’t like. why make it an unpleasant atmosphere for the fans who want to share their excitement?

yeah | 5/15/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Regardless of your feelings on their music, I think we can officially proclaim that we’ve reached the point where people that thought it was cool to bash bands like Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance can now be considered uncool because it’s become so ubiquitous. I’m intrigued to come to articles like these just to read the idiot who thinks he/she made some salient point in criticizing them. I’m assuming the word platitude means nothing to you.

While we’re at it, throw the people who say “Rock is Dead” in that same category. I’ve heard this every day since Kurt Cobain’s suicide, it’s another vacuous remark people make because they haven’t bought anything good in awhile. It’s the equivalent of your buddy exaggerating how he’s going to die old and alone because he hasn’t been on a date in a few months.

RockGod | 5/15/2007, 11:00 pm EST

These rap/metal/emo kids need to bow down, this is low grade music that needs to dissolve, if anyone reading this wants to listen to a real rock album, go buy Soundgarden Louder than Love, and learn a lesson in what music was and what music should be…

Blazin Azn | 5/15/2007, 10:57 pm EST

I have listened to the new album minutes to midnight i would consider it LP’s best. Its so diverse and so much more different and before you judge LP’s style listen to the new album. The first single isnt so good but it has alot of other really good songs

Blackwood | 5/15/2007, 8:10 pm EST

oh and p.s: blackwood is a last name, it doesn’t have a gender!

Lumpy | 5/15/2007, 7:34 pm EST

Umm, RS, are you SURE Placebo is joining these 3 bands??? It just seems so unlikely that they would do such a [stupid] thing like that. Hopefully they are not getting ready to sell out… surely not… this must be some sort of mistake, OR it’s a joke no one got.

And, I don’t know what that guy from Lincoln Park is talking about, their 3rd album will be just as bald/boring as the first 2, it’ll be just as irritating, just as disposable etc, etc, etc, etc, etc ( it was enough for me to hear that first piece of crap of a single to know it’s business as usual ) ….I’m sorry dudes, but rock is STILL dead!

:(

Blackwood | 5/15/2007, 6:13 pm EST

mmm…

it’s not about the looks… of course there are different preferences about it… each to their own, right?

and I don’t care if you’re sexy or not… seriously, if you are then congratulations to you! but that was not what I was refering to in the other post :P

p.s: and what if I’m a guy who can openly admit when another guy is hot or hotter tan me??

smith or smithy if you like | 5/15/2007, 5:48 pm EST

gerard is a sexy beast,,,but its not like looks matter..he’s sooo tallented…even if u dont like them, other people need them

§hayla | 5/15/2007, 5:42 pm EST

Placebo and MCR is why i cant let this tour pass me by. they are amazing !

ThisTourWillRuleYourFace | 5/15/2007, 4:27 pm EST

Wow, look at all the conformists who think it’s so hip to trash mainstream bands! You called Linkin Park repetitive! OOhh are you a trailblazer! And you think My Chemical Romance is just feeding the emo movement with empty songs and storybook lyrics? HOLY HELL! I’ve never heard that opinion before! Let me guess, you can’t stand reality shows either right? What a bunch of numbnuts. You can’t stand that something is going to be put out there for the masses to enjoy so you try to alienate it. No sale fools. These bands are phenomenal and this will be an earth shattering Projekt Revolution.

beedubs03 | 5/15/2007, 4:17 pm EST

Linkin Park hasn’t evolved as a band at all since they went mainstream. Every album they come out with sounds EXACTLY the same, repititious lyrics and a lack of musical form.

lil Nate | 5/15/2007, 3:10 pm EST

in reply to Blackwood’s comment, I am as sex-z as they come and look in the mirror as often as possible, and blackwood is kind of a manly name to say u think MCR guy is hot!

Blackwood | 5/15/2007, 3:07 pm EST

to the one who asked: no, “that guy from MCR” is not even remotely close to being the ugliest thing in the planet! I’m not saying he’s gorgeous or anything, but he’s not disguting to look at.

Why would anyone care about how he looks anyway??

Perhaps you should try and check the mirror every once in a while!

Mike Q | 5/15/2007, 1:57 pm EST

I wonder if Linkin Park will get booed when they open for Pearl Jam this summer

obecalp | 5/15/2007, 1:34 pm EST

placebo is the best (and only) reason to see that tour.

Luis | 5/15/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Best tour since the Earth turned 2000.

Franko Tanko | 5/15/2007, 1:24 pm EST

Whoa Whoa Whoa…

Linkin who?!

Kay | 5/15/2007, 12:50 pm EST

geeze you people are harsh

Hobbs McGinter | 5/15/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Big Nate’s got it summed up. Rudy’s sarcasm is appreciated. Sadly, when Hybrid Theory came out I was so into it. Probably cuz I was 13 yrs old….and a girl…jk

lil Nate | 5/15/2007, 12:20 pm EST

Isn’t that guy from MCR the ugliest ma facka on the face of the planet??

Rudy | 5/15/2007, 11:57 am EST

It would be better if Linkin Park tour with Nickelback. that would be awesome.

brad | 5/15/2007, 11:42 am EST

well, think about it: would you rather have them tour separately and take up two venues each tour date?

Big Nate | 5/15/2007, 11:36 am EST

Ahhh two crappy bands uniting for one tour. Amazing
