As both Whiskeytown frontman and solo artist, Ryan Adams has been helping damaged lovers fill breakup/makeup mix tapes for more than a decade. While prolific to the point of compulsion nothing he’s done has rivaled his classic solo debut, 2000’s uniformly gorgeous Heartbreaker…until now. The punk troubadour’s new album Easy Tiger - which is playing in our mail room, in our editors’ cars, and may soon be piped in via loudspeaker to the restrooms around here - has us thinking Adams may finally transcend his perpetual next big thing status. If you haven’t already heard the messy, chaotic jam “Goodnight Rose,” which opens the album check it out here. It gives way to the elegiac “Two,” which has Adams lamenting “it takes two when it used to take one” between sincere if roguish apologies for not being a better man. Other great tracks include the churning, almost violent ode to self-destruction, “Halloween Head,” the traditional folk ballad “Pearls On a String,” and “These Girls,” a spare confessional that would fit perfectly next to “Sylvia Plath” on Gold or “Call Me On Your Way Back Home” on Heartbreaker. Easy Tiger seems to prove that Adams — having for years indulged his jones for Grateful Dead-inspired jam band impersonation (and other dubious cravings) — is once again as in touch with the delicate tragedies of life and love as he’s ever been.

I can’t understand what all the fuss is about. I really like Ryan Adams, especially the song he did with Sting and Rod Stewart. Very good! I don’t think he sounds a thing like me, though.
Shakermaker | 7/12/2007, 5:01 am EST
I think Ryan is one of the best things in many years in R&R, his music his very honest and with passion that i havent seen in other artist in recent years, i belive he’s carry on with the tradition and the heart of american music like Dylan, Springsteen and so on…
Shamus | 6/17/2007, 4:48 pm EST
I tried to like Ryan Adams. I really did. However that “Gold” album was tiresome. Maybe he’s improved since then, but that comparison to Neil Young? I love Neil’s music but I don’t see anything to write home about in Adams. Neil is a down to earth guy. Adams is a crybaby.
FG | 6/13/2007, 10:57 pm EST
Ryan Adams is pushing music into places where music has never been before. In between rock, Stoner rock (at times), country, and blues. My only hope is that someday others will realize how great he actually is

Love IS Hell…and Ryan, babe, i couldn’t have said it better myself.
MARCEL | 6/7/2007, 4:46 pm EST
I agree with Elton John’s comparison of Ryan with Neil Young, whose music I’ve been in love with since 1970. No one else has touched me musically like that except, FINALLY, Ryan Adams! (well, maybe Jeff Buckley, but he’s gone and Ryan rocks on). This hot sh*t never disappoints me, on disc, live or otherwise. If I wasn’t nearly old enough to be his mother, I’d try to steal or at least borrow him from Parker…but, thatz a whole other thing (ez tiger…)

Oh my gosh, could RA be any radder? I don’t think so. He skateboards? I mean I’m really sorry he got hurt, but I’ve always had a thing for skateboarders and now this is just too much. Bottom line- he’s a beautiful genius and his music makes my world a better place. I don’t know why there’s so much controversy over him, I think he’s so rad. =)

His music grabs hold of you like tree branches to power lines… so be prepared when you put it in..because you might not ever come back. So glad he hit morgantown WV (my hometown).. it was like karma finally paid off… cant wait to see him in philly and in Denver.. anyone know who this mysterious headliner will be?

If Ryan Adams had gone on a “REAL TOUR” there is no way that he would have played in Morgantown, WV. Great concert, great songs! I cannot wait for the new album. If those songs sound half as good on record as they did Thursday night…I’ll be a very happy girl.
Melissa | 5/19/2007, 9:44 pm EST
It’s funny, I hate WAR and also NIN. LOL!
Ryan Adams Rock On! A real tour, anybody on this list ever toured before? You can’t tour unless you have an album to support!
Kevin | 5/18/2007, 7:57 pm EST
I saw Ryan and the Cards last night in Morgantown, WV. His voice sounded great, but he wasn’t playing the guitar due to a skateboarding accident. I don’t care who likes him, doesn’t like him, who agrees with his release of material- or who doesn’t, how many shows you think he should play….screw all that. I love his work, and his shows. Artists are not here to please everyone. If you dig him cool, if not…find someone else to dig. It’s a big world!
Andrew | 5/18/2007, 3:48 am EST
Ryan Adams is a brilliant songwriter, musician, and vocalist. Some critics complain that he releases too many albums, but didn’t musicians back in the 60’s do the same. I really don’t understand what could be so wrong with that. I think it’s great!
As for people saying that he needs an editor…wtf! I think if Ryan, or any artist for that matter is content with the final product, then that’s how it should be released. It’s their expression, not ours.
I have a feeling that Easy Tiger is going to be another great piece of work from Mr. Adams. This man hasn’t let me down once.
Jason | 5/18/2007, 2:11 am EST
ok, so he acts like a baby from time to time, he’s arrogant, and he may take himself a little too seriously. however, give credit where credit’s due. other than dylan this guy’s the best songwriter alive. oh yea, and if you don’t like gram parsons you need to take a long, hard look at YOURSELF f*ckface.

Of course, it’s riduculous to call Jeff Tweedy and Wilco a better singer/songwriter rather than Ryan. As mentioned before, he will be a legend!
Correct | 5/15/2007, 8:05 am EST
Everyone on here that thinks Elliott Smith is better than Ryan Adams needs to use the handy tool of youtube.com listen to elliott smith live, then you go listen to Ryan Adams live. That will give you the answer of who’s better. Ryan Adams will come out on top.
Felipe | 5/14/2007, 4:07 pm EST
Ryan is one of the best songwriters out there. I love Gold and Demolition. Their sound is great. Maybe he should edit more and not release everything because he has some lame songs out there, but Im always glad when he has a new album out.
Boner | 5/14/2007, 2:21 pm EST
He was awesome on the Robin Hood soundtrack.
mmd | 5/14/2007, 2:15 pm EST
Jeff Tweedy and Wilco are just far better, sorry. Better songs, less fat. Best thing Adams ever did was produce Jesse Malin’s first record. Its my opininon that this is a fact.

Ryan Adams is a brilliant artist. This man can experiment with different genres of music and make it look like he’s been doing it for decades. An amazing songwriter, his lyrics alone in 29 made for beautiful storytelling. I still can’t believe the horrid reviews that album recieved. But, maybe one day those people who knocked it down and knock the artist down will one day see waht a genius he is.
THIS MAN WILL BE A LEGEND!

Okay, first of all, Yuri Zhivago, M.D., your sense of irony and humor must be rather poorly developed if you honestly think your poor Bryan Adams joke was worthy of even an obligatory chuckle. That joke is so old it’s not even worth remembering, and if you were making it as a quasi-ironic joke about the overuse of the joke, well, it still isn’t funny. Granted, zeppelin’s response was retarded, but still, do better. What is stupid about zeppelin’s name? Second, what is up with the Elliott Smith comparisons? A) they sound nothing alike b) neither ever claimed to be better than the other c) smith is dead and d) is it really ryan’s fault that he wasn’t as f***ed up as elliott? i mean, thank god he didnt “live the turmoil” of elliott smith…I imagine Elliott Smith would have rather written less heartrendingly depressing music if he could have been less heartrendingly depressing. People who say things like “Elliott Smith was a god, Ryan Adams a mere mortal”- here is what I have to say: ………………..? okay? Thank you for defining that for us. Now get a life. God I hate indie snobs.

Most of the people who comment must be pathetic individuals.
Ryan Adams is the best artist out today. That man is a GENIUS. But why would I argue with people who probably think that My Chemical Romance is better than the Beatles.

for all the records ryan adams has put out, he still won’t come close to writing a tune like “Summer of’69″
i’ll take bryan over ryan any day of the week.

Ryan Adams & the Cardinals made a great performance on the Henry Rollins Show a few weeks ago on IFC. That song they played sounded like it was teleported from a lost Neil Young record from the 1970s. It made the hair stand up on my arms. That’s a good thing.
Kap | 5/11/2007, 10:37 pm EST

The whole Bryan Adams, “summer of ‘69″ references really need to stop. It’s really old and pathetic.
As for people complaining about a “real tour,” what do you mean by a real tour? Judging by last year alone it seems like that’s the only thing that man did.
I’ve been a Ryan Adams fan for years, and am always excited when he releases an album…you don’t know what to expect. Yes, not all of it is great, Rock N Roll being the prime example. But even Dylan himself is guilty of releasing albums that weren’t up to par with his previous work.
I think it’s sad to judge an artist by just one album or by the fact that he chooses to defend himself when some prick in his audience decides to be a ass and yell ridiculousness at Ryan while he’s trying to perform. I’ve been present at some of those “incidents” and as a true fan who’s there for the music, nothing upsets me more. It’s distracting and annoying!
I think Ryan is an incredible artist with incredible talent, one of the best of his generation. It’s sad that only a select few have come to realize that. I hope the people who purchase Easy Tiger, listen to it with an open mind and appreiciates it for what it is; music!
Go Halloweenheads!!!!!

I’m pretty sure he DID write Summer of 69.
Thats why he kicked that guy out of his show a few years back. I’m sure he’s sick of playing it all these years. He wants to focus on his new material (Like this album, Take It Easy Tiger)
That tune and Cuts Like a Knife=way overplayed. Glad you are moving on Ryan Adams

jorge | 5/11/2007, 3:47 pm EST
wow…some of you people really need to find some friends, and quick. I always love it when people who have never done anything with their lives put down people who are. It reminds me of high school when all the losers would get together and gossip about how much they hate the popular kids when in reality they would die to be popular.
So to sum things up, I am calling people calling out Ryan Adams, Elliot Smith, and Gram Parsons losers.
O.J. | 5/11/2007, 3:43 pm EST
I think I finally found the real killer…its Phil Spector.
Ed | 5/11/2007, 3:33 pm EST
This all makes me laugh…the real review will be done and it will be 3.5 stars like most of his albums. There will be the obligitory comment about his prolificacy, how two songs with the word two in their title is two too many, blah blah blah. Ryan is a great songwriter, its pretty hard to deny that at this point, but if this record sells 500,000 I will be shocked and a little dismayed. His shows are already full of fratboys, I can’t even imagine how bad it will be if this record somehow gets big.
Nathan…what do you consider a real tour? RATC played more than 100 shows last year without an album to tour behind. I predict a few shed shows with Phil here and there, and a pretty extensive tour as well. We’ll see…

uh, elliott smith’s lyrics were pure poetry–take a look at “king’s crossing” for example.
ryan wears his influences on his sleeve, nothing wrong with that.
i think he rips himself off as much as he does anyone else. “two” =”harder now that it’s over”(but “rip off” makes up for it, gorgeous)–nice album pic tho–sober looks good on him.

elliott smith was so indie that he stabbed himself in the chest. how arty. ryan adams lives to record 1,003 records in about a year. good for him. if you don’t like ‘em, don’t buy ‘em. go home and put on your elliott smith records and dream of artsy fartsy ways of offing yourself. muuuuuch better than living and trying to be a better person and musician.

He’s good. get used to it. move on. if this was the sixies or seventies he’s be a genius…now he’s called a hack and a rip-off artist (and how many legendary people, including dylan, were influenced (and in dylan and grateful dead’s case stole) others music). they are still legends because they borrowed and offered more. that’s the way music works…elliot smith is good, todd snider is good, white stripes are good, ryan adams is good…leave him alone and go wack off to your indie cred. meanwhile I’m going to be taking in another great album

Bryan owns you

please note that the misspelling of “pompous” as “pompass” was completely intentional.
Elliott Smith was a thousand miles beyond this guy.

This kid couldn’t hold Elliott Smith’s jock.
Ryan Adams is a cliche. Elliott lived turmoil, and it was real, and you can FEEL it.
dupacrash | 5/11/2007, 1:16 pm EST
what a shock. RS loves the new ryan adams cd. add him to the list of artists who can do no wrong. i wouldn’t be surprised to find out that a five star review of the new white stripes cd has already been written whether anyone at the magazine has heard it yet or not.
Mooselips | 5/11/2007, 1:12 pm EST
I am not even a dead fan, but to say that Adams’ time under the influence of the Grateful Dead was a departure from the “delicate tradegies of life and love” is, well boorish…

I think it was Jimbo Jones from the Simpsons who said, “The whole thing reeks of effort, man.”
That is Ryan Adams in a nutshell. Punk? nope. Dylan? He wishes. Gram Parsons? He had the decency to OD at 27.
Anybody who flips out after being called Bryan Adams has no sense of humour, which makes him pompass.

Loved “Hertbreaker” and “Gold”…but not much after that. Hope this is a return to that type of album.
sara | 5/11/2007, 1:00 pm EST
Ryan is very talented, despite the detractors. Heartbreaker is a classic, which will be around for many years after the rest of these bozos have faded into the great nothingness. I eagerly await my very own copy of Easy Tiger.

“Goodnight Rose” starts out like a loveletter to “China Cat Sunflower” so I don’t undertand the “moving away from the Dead” criticism. Anyway, I love Ryan’s music-looking forward to this one.

This guy annoys me! Pompus bastard .. listen to a Todd Snider record you’ll never listen to this guy again!
Ghost Mutt | 5/11/2007, 12:50 pm EST
Elliot Smith is dead, plus Adams alternately interests me and repulses me
T.J. | 5/11/2007, 12:45 pm EST
Man, I can’t wait for his new one. He just keeps getting better and better. This adds to all the other new stuff I have to own, (next to the new Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes,Wilco, etc.)
Ender | 5/11/2007, 12:40 pm EST
Cold Roses is an excellent start if you are not familiar with his work. 5 stars, good stuff.

So now we know RS’s taste. Good luck with selling this issue. How much schwag did his record company send you guys to promote another lacklustre cd? Ryan Adams = BORING!
abandonedstation | 5/11/2007, 12:26 pm EST
his album ‘rock n roll’ ain’t half bad, either.
Franko Tanko | 5/11/2007, 12:24 pm EST
love that ‘’i'm giving myself the in thinking hard and smoking look'’ on the picture is really lame.
you lamoid.
Scott P | 5/11/2007, 12:24 pm EST
Thank god he may be moving away from the Grateful dead jones thing. We can only hope the live shows will follow suit.
SATAN | 5/11/2007, 12:17 pm EST
Year Zero sucks, War. You are another mindless drone who will listen to whatever is presented to you by a spoiled rich rocker. Get a life.
Nathan | 5/11/2007, 12:11 pm EST
I love Adams and am so glad to hear the word “stunning” mentioned alongside Easy Tiger. Now if he’d only do a real tour.
War | 5/11/2007, 12:11 pm EST
Tell him to take a shower, I’m listening to the new NIN disc, and not interested.
