Blogging American Idol: Blech Lewis Beat-Boxes His Way Out Of The Running

5/9/07, 12:54 pm EST

You know things are bad on American Idol when the highlight of the episode is Ryan Seacrest’s formulaic banter with “Simon’s evil twin,” Judge Judy. The TV magistrate was in the audience for last night’s final four show-down between Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis, Lakisha Jones and Jordin Sparks, who were coached by Barry Gibb for their zestless renditions of Bee Gees tunes.

Thank heavens, then, for Blake Lewis’s unmitigated suckiness — the only thing that kept me from slipping into a Melinda-induced coma. Final Four week is supposed to be when Idol finally gets interesting again for the first time since the season’s initial coast-to-coast pageant of delusional wannabes. By this point in the competition, we’re meant to revel in the glory of having eliminated the Haley Scarnatos and Constantine Maroulises and Kelly Picklers — singers who somehow squeaked through week after week on sheer force of hypnotic thighs or faux rock & roll grit or charmingly retarded mispronunciations — while retaining an assortment of dynamos and duds diverse enough to keep the game interesting.

Alas, Season Six has not followed the customary Idol story arc, and now we’re left with two of the show’s best singers ever in Jones and Doolittle, neither of whom has as much charisma in her entire voluptuous frame as Sanjaya’s got in his effeminate little pinkie finger. Melinda’s timing was iffy at the start of “Love You Inside And Out,” but of course she rescued it in the end and turned in a performance rightfully described by Randy as “solid” and Paula as “consistent.” It was effortless, in that she put forth no effort toward augmenting her technical expertise with stylistic savoir-faire. Perhaps she oughtta get some pointers from Jordin, who slamdunked both of her songs last night thanks to a winning blend of belting out the big notes and tenderly melting into the subtle ones. Lakisha, however, flubbed both performances, and even went hoarse in the final moments of “Run To Me,” prompting Simon to predict she’ll be neck-in-neck with Blake for elimination.

The boy bombed colossally on both tunes. His falsetto in “You Should Be Dancin” sounded so much like a bad impersonation of Adam Sandler’s “Red Hooded Sweatshirt” that it made me wish Simon would quip, “Blake, you should NOT be singing.” With the 2001 track “This Is Where I Come In,” he dug up what might be the crappiest Bee Gees song ever, and then crapped it up even more with lame, unnecessary beat-boxing. Lewis looked like he knew he’d blown it. In all likelihood, he spent the remainder of last night soaking his pillow with hot emo tears, listening to “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” and staring somberly at a photo of his ousted BFF, Chris Richardson — only taking a break from moping to tear out a casting call ad for the touring production of Rent. Given his profound Idol suckitude, it’s likely he’d be available for that gig by week’s end.

Meanwhile, what do you think Sanjaya’s up to right about now? Do you think he misses us as much as we miss him?

GoTerps, I don’t know shit about American Idol, but I DO know that this Blake guy does not look SHIT like Green Day’s drummer, Tré Cool.

CanadianGirl | 5/19/2007, 12:43 am EST

Blake Lewis can sing and he does have a very unique and “now” style. There are so many “in” bands out there that have great songs, but only in the studio.. you see them live and they can’t carry a tune. At least Blake can carry a tune. Sanjaya, on the other hand, could not carry a tune, and should not have made it to the top 10. Doolittle I have to say was an amazing singer, and I do believe she will go further with her career.

Jumbo | 5/13/2007, 5:17 pm EST

There are many quality recent Bee Gee songs. Since 1990 ther have been twenty top ten hits in the UK alone and one ‘Sacred Trust” was from 2001

I am Blaker girlish

I can’t stand to watch Melinda perform one more time. I am sorry because I never make fun of people; however, I just hoped I wouldn’t have to watch that squatty body attempt to strut across the stage again. Jordin, I can take or leave, but BLAKE is the best thing that has ever happened to Idol. He is just like the judges say week after week: He is so cool. I teach 8th grade students so I can’t say “Blake is hot,” which he is, so I will just say “cool.” He just has to get his hair back the way it was! All my girls are voting for him regardless if he has a bad night. Just wait to see what he does this week with Roxanne! I hope it is finally goodbye Melinda. I can’t listen to the judges go another week without saying that she is boring and lacks charisma! Blake is a charmer, and I downloaded all his songs and play them at journal time for my kids. They love it!

Boner | 5/10/2007, 4:52 pm EST

I am everywhere. Just like God. Only with a bigger wang.

monee | 5/10/2007, 4:49 pm EST

at least blake sticks to his formula no matter what the judges say. i hate when contestants change things up just to appease the judges (chris daughtry’s ‘what a wonderful world’)…

monkey | 5/10/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Sure, where you at?

asa | 5/10/2007, 4:02 pm EST

I guess the reviewer missed Jordin’s screechiness. Also, Melinda is a nice singer, very comfortable voice. Howver, she really needs to add some fire to her performance. She ought to take Fantasia’s advice and get dirty. Rip into one of these songs with some verve. Then I’d vote for her. Jordin’s singing is very melodramatic. That is where she is best. Do we need any more of such singers? Blake, well, he could make an interesting album. He won’t win this thing, though. Jordin is the anointed one.

Boner | 5/10/2007, 2:45 pm EST

Hey Monkey, want to meet?

Andrew m | 5/10/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Okay…I’ve never been this emotionally invested in AI…ever, but now that LaKisha is gone, I am pissed. I can’t stand Melinda, she is fake and needs to try and pull her head out of her shoulders. Jodrdin always sounds the same and shoudn’t be on because her dad is famous, and she is just a straight up spoiled snot.
LaKisha was just…she deserved it. But, now that she’s been “ousted” Blake is THE most talented of the three. He knows how to put music together and chage it up’…and he has a neck.
So there.

monkey | 5/10/2007, 11:49 am EST

dude,,,,with a name like Boner, i’d love to watch your balls,,,,up close!!

Boner | 5/10/2007, 10:45 am EST

mikeky | 5/10/2007, 9:43 am EST

i can’t stand blake. he has no lips. my God, that pisses me off.

captain jack | 5/10/2007, 8:41 am EST

i’m gonna bet Pat and Anonymous are the same person.

Pat | 5/10/2007, 3:51 am EST

If you watch some of his concerts on YouTube, Constantine does have singing talent.

Anonymous | 5/10/2007, 3:48 am EST

Constantine does have singing talent if you listen to him sing on Broadway. Or watch some of his concerts on YouTube.

weinerhead | 5/9/2007, 11:51 pm EST

here we are in world full of changes. dicussing politics, and the issues of the day. i want to talk to you. even if you dont want me to. i gonna talk to you…….

talkin it up, on the barry gibb talk show, talkin bout issues, talkin bout real important issues.
Barry F-in Gibb should be pissed after last nights rendition.

ACJ | 5/9/2007, 11:44 pm EST

You know what Blake will be like as a musician - Maroon 5.

2young2care | 5/9/2007, 11:17 pm EST

Concerning Blake: To quote Simon, “This is a singing competition.” Blake may be able to carry a tune but he is no great singer. I don’t care who wins, but I wish people would quit gushing about Blake. He’s overrated and yes, his performances are the same. Oh, yeah, and GoTerps, he reminds me of some eighties singer too!

Blake stayed! | 5/9/2007, 11:02 pm EST

Can you honestly tell me that the girls’ clone performances every week don’t bore you? Blake isn’t the greatest singer, but I like him more than the girls!

Uh...No. | 5/9/2007, 10:59 pm EST

Well, I think it will be a Melinda/ Blake final. The guy has an ok voice, but the other three girls just sound the same to me. Like someone said, they’re all going to make R&B/hip-hop/soul or whatever albums that “show off” their “great” voices. Yawn. I’ll take Blake’s beatboxing to their boring, screechy, annoying ballads any day.

GoTerps | 5/9/2007, 10:36 pm EST

I know who Blake reminds me of–the drummer for Green Day!! Are they twins or what?!

GoTerps | 5/9/2007, 10:35 pm EST

Blake is no longer able to hide his lack of singing ability. Every one of his performances are the same. He reminds me of someone (in appearance and body movements only), but I can’t put a finger on it. Is it the Duran Duran singer (Simon LeBon)? Phil Collins? Paul Carrack? Bono?

Anonymous | 5/9/2007, 10:23 pm EST

Learn to spell.

Anonymous | 5/9/2007, 10:23 pm EST

Don’t you look uncharmingly stupid now.

Kirsten | 5/9/2007, 10:22 pm EST

Gotta disagree with your Blake review. That guy rocks. No, his falsetto wasn’t the greatest–but I would buy his second Bee Gee rendition in a heartbeat if he released it. In fact, I’d buy his Jamiroquai and Cure renditions too. I can’t say the same about any other contestent, period. He is the only AI contestant with style and a shining future. You’ve just got him all wrong, Jenny.

Wayne | 5/9/2007, 9:44 pm EST

Blake is unique and cool? With that pitiful fake moonwalk and the stuttering that some call his great way with beat box, what are people smoking?

Monica | 5/9/2007, 9:30 pm EST

What a harsh review. Frankly, even if he isn’t the best singer out there, Blake is fresh air to this competition. I am sooooo sick of hearing big voice wailers, like, oh, I dunno, every other competitor left. Melinda has way, way too much vibrato, it makes me want to cover my ears, Lakisha has absolutely nothing special or remarkable about her, and Jordin is pretty (she looks like America Ferrera- Ugly Betty on her off days) but dear god, she SCREECHES. Blake is entertaining, he always makes things his own, and his voice reminds me of Jason Mraz. Out of the four left, he is the only one I would consider listening to afterwards, because I know I’d hate anything those three girls would do. I just know they’d make generic, hip-pop/r&b style music which is so overdone.

Melinda Will Win | 5/9/2007, 8:17 pm EST

The End.

Kim | 5/9/2007, 7:51 pm EST

Kevin, I am entitled to my opinion, and I think Blake is cool and different. Think how boring the show would be with only the three divas remaining singing drippy ballads forever on end. At least he is something different. I like when he covered Keane, 311, The Cure, etc. Just because he did not have his best night last week does not mean he is not entertaining. Everybody has bad nights, Jordin did last week and Lakisha does every week IMO.

Kevin | 5/9/2007, 7:03 pm EST

Who could possible think Blake is “unique” or brings “something speacial”? He’s a two-bit singer who happens to be a one-bit beatboxer, but suddenly he’s daring because he doesn’t sing in a singing competition? Not even that, but why was the episode before this his “best” while this one is not as good? Sounded like the same idiotic, ridiculous, self-conscious attempt at cool both weeks to me.

Jim | 5/9/2007, 6:56 pm EST

What’s with Barry Gibb’s helmet hair? They should have had Jimmy Fallon in full BeeGees white suit…next week Alec Baldwin as Tony Bennett singing “I like things that are great…”

wickitpickit | 5/9/2007, 6:46 pm EST

Season Six!!! More like Season Sux!!! Whew, I crack myself up…

Jr | 5/9/2007, 6:45 pm EST

“Sanjaya’s going home had me literally leaping with joy off the couch- I’ll do the same when Blake goes. If I’m still watching. Long live Barry Gibb- and Judge Judy!”

amen to that, senjaya sux adn so does blake

auramac | 5/9/2007, 6:30 pm EST

Sanjaya’s going home had me literally leaping with joy off the couch- I’ll do the same when Blake goes. If I’m still watching. Long live Barry Gibb- and Judge Judy!

Kim | 5/9/2007, 5:37 pm EST

I thought Blake rocked last night, as he does every time. I think if the judges would have praised him then more people would have praised him too. He has a unique interesting quality that brings that something extra to the table. AND he is not going home tonight, that would be Lakisha, then Melinda. It will be a Jordin, Blake finale. GO BLAKE!!

Ninaclock | 5/9/2007, 5:07 pm EST

The best part was when Simon told Jordin that her song choice was outdated. Was he kidding? All of the Bee Gees tunes are at least 25 years old. “You are only 17, do something younger..” How was she supposed to do that with a 25-year-old music catalog to choose from. I usually agree with Simon, but that comment was not well thought out. Jeez, Simon.

j | 5/9/2007, 5:00 pm EST

nice column, ms. at first i thought i was reading rob sheffield.

sanjaya was very missed on last nights AI. I’m sure he would’ve rocked the wide-collared suit and medallions very well.

i’m not sure what he’s up to now, probably not watching Idol anymore.

Blythe | 5/9/2007, 4:47 pm EST

I agree that the competition is not much of one but didn’t think Blake sucked that bad. Also, I think he could care less if he goes home at this point. He’s not the type to really want to be an “IDOL”. He wants to do his own thing

Anonymous | 5/9/2007, 3:14 pm EST

Can’t disagree with most of of what you’ve written, but Jordin…tender? subtle? As a crutch maybe. Screechy more like, and gaspy - definitely. Sorry, I’m not buying the Jordin Pimporama.

I’d rather take the Melinda Quaaludes anyday.

Brenda | 5/9/2007, 2:39 pm EST

It’s easily among the worst years since Idol has been on the air, second only to the Fantasia/Diana showdown. What we need is a combination of Jordin’s style and Melinda’s substance. Oh, wait, that was Kelly Clarkson.

Anonymous | 5/9/2007, 1:17 pm EST

I have to say all the theme nights tend to make the performances a little more uneven. Maybe they need to choose less idiosyncratic performers as themes especially in the home stretch.
