Leaked Guns N’ Roses “Chinese Democracy” Tracks Make Us Long for Whiskey, Slash

5/8/07, 1:23 pm EST

Guns N Roses

In the last few days five songs from Guns N’ Roses long-awaited albatross of an album, Chinese Democracy, have leaked. Right now “The Blues,” “IRS,” “Madagascar,” “There Was a Time,” and “Chinese Democracy” are all totally available. The good news is that listening to them brings on the thrill of doing something naughty. The bad news is that the songs mostly suck. “Chinese Democracy” tries waaaay too hard to rock and retains none of that effortless, dirty looseness we need from G N’ R. “There Was a Time” is a busy almost-ballad. “The Blues” is “November Rain,” the musical. And while we kinda like the unabashed brawn of “IRS,” it features Axl hawking really bad lyrics he knows are “lyrics.”

We’re assuming “Madagascar” (song five on the leaked list) will show up tomorrow, but in the meantime it’s available on file sharing sites. Perhaps it will redeem the rest? [via MetalSucks]

What did you expect? Something good?

Josh | 5/8/2007, 1:57 pm EST

Well, yeah, Marty P. After a decade of work, this album should bleed gold and piss classic.

Air-con | 5/8/2007, 2:00 pm EST

The leaks are amazing.

Mikey T | 5/8/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Axl Rose is a hack.

Roberto | 5/8/2007, 2:02 pm EST

If you have heard the songs live and seen them evolve, as well as the band members and what they are going for, you would see the great new songs in a different light.

rockstar70 | 5/8/2007, 2:02 pm EST

Guns n Roses is dead!! Only some sad ghost remains!!

What? | 5/8/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Just got em – These songs are amazing.

Sanchez | 5/8/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Smells like a Lamb Dinner.

Bruce Dickenson | 5/8/2007, 2:05 pm EST

Guys, I coulda used a little more cowbell.

tom | 5/8/2007, 2:08 pm EST

Axl is stuck in the 80’s.

Will | 5/8/2007, 2:09 pm EST

Most of the critics are going to bash anything Axl does. We already knew that. Most of you do not have an open mind. You had already formed your opinion, before you even heard the music.

But I believe anyone who listens with an open mind, will develop an opinion very different from what this “critic” has written.

Chinese Democracy is literally one of the greatest rock songs I’ve ever heard. I love Slash, and have been a fan of GNR since I was in 3rd grade. But Slash and Co, could NOT have created this song.

And The Blues is also incredible. It sounds like more of a UYI era song, but very beautiful in every way.

I have not heard studio versions of the other songs at this time.

Garrett C | 5/8/2007, 2:09 pm EST

These songs are excellent. They piss all over what is being played on the radio these days that’s for sure.

Peter Jawrowski | 5/8/2007, 2:10 pm EST

Chinese Democracy will make Kris Kross’ Jump look like the Beatles’ Revolver.

Oh, for all who are clamoring for this album…1987 called it wants its primped hair back.

Tool566 | 5/8/2007, 2:10 pm EST

Lol go promote fallout boy some more leak rock and roll the people lol.I love when idiots review things it might be her opinion but come on i just heard the leaks and they might not be as good as afd they are demos and they are better then anything out right now i forgot axl was still around now i cant wait but from what i hear i will have to wait.

oh man | 5/8/2007, 2:14 pm EST

hmmm, did you honestly think this would be good, Izzy and Slash are long gone, which were the ones with the talent

Liz | 5/8/2007, 2:15 pm EST

although the review was a bit harsh, the songs would sound better WITH Slash.

ledzep89 | 5/8/2007, 2:15 pm EST

Yeah stone go call fallout boy great this is rock and roll.where has this mag gone its sad.p.s. i was never a gnr fan in the day but these leaks do rock a hell of alot more then anything else right now.

Dez | 5/8/2007, 2:16 pm EST

Haha! Who wrote that ‘article’? Damn. The songs are awesome. The guitar work alone is amazing, and Axl completes it. This article in no way reflects the veiws of actual GNR fans. Only people who wish to cling to Slash.

FINCK ROCKS | 5/8/2007, 2:18 pm EST

The leaks are nothing but demos you idiots!!! looks like some magazine is gonna get their ass ascpatitated.

MRCLJ | 5/8/2007, 2:20 pm EST

damn these songs kick some serious ass……

New GNR | 5/8/2007, 2:26 pm EST

The reviewer don’t know what she is talking about.”Chidem tried way too hard to rock”.Are you outta your mind. This song is way better than any song we listen to on redio nowadays. And SLASH???Even though i repect Slash but i think Finck(Blues+TWAT solo) and Buckethead(TWAT outro) did way better job than what Slash and Co. are doing in Velvet Revolver

TruthHertz | 5/8/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Get over the nostalgia trip losers. GNR was, not is, what you remember. Axl is old and rich, and uneducated. There’s not much to get passionate about when the youth is gone and you don’t have intelligence to fall back on, like say Bob Dylan.
I say it again.
GET OVER IT. GNR IS DEAD!

Carlos | 5/8/2007, 2:31 pm EST

What?

These songs kick some major ass!

Go Axl!

lastroots | 5/8/2007, 2:32 pm EST

These songs are the most amazing work I heard in years. There’s just no challenge! GUNS ROCK LIKE NEVER BEFORE!

Marty McFly | 5/8/2007, 2:32 pm EST

I have seen the future…..of Guns N’ Roses.

It looks good.

scott | 5/8/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Wow, it’s kinda amazing that a magazine that prides itself on being a music authority would have such a lame POV on this. Although I guess its not all that surprising. We’ll probably see them mark out to the latest crap release from fall out boy, or totally push the 10 minute lip sync set comeback tour of brit spears as the greatest thing ever.

John | 5/8/2007, 2:34 pm EST

These songs are pretty amazing, although they definitely need some more work.

Glen | 5/8/2007, 2:37 pm EST

These songs pale in comparison to DRAGONFORCE. Also, I heard Slash is like a soup-can AROUND.

Samuel | 5/8/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Didn’t RS say just one year ago that IRS, Better and TWAT were better than anything Velvet Revolver had done? Now they’re bashing newer, better version of IRS. At least show some consistency. These new songs are not final products but are already better than any mainstream rock that’s being produced in this day and age

Fortus | 5/8/2007, 2:41 pm EST

The blues can beat the both Vr albums…..

ASCAP | 5/8/2007, 2:43 pm EST

remove the links to the songs or you will get ASCAPITATED!!

Lisa | 5/8/2007, 2:44 pm EST

How can you say those songs are bad?? Just listened to them, and the all kick f***** ass!!!!

Ross | 5/8/2007, 2:48 pm EST

They’re okay
Anything by Queens of the Stone Age blows this out of the water when it comes to hard rock
I just don’t appreciate Axl going all Roger Waters about the band name Guns N Roses and using it still – this is not Guns N Roses.
It would be like if Robert Plant decided to get any entirely new set of musicians and tour/record as Led Zeppelin.

Ashburner | 5/8/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Um…those tracks leaked last year. Way to break the news, guys!

Neds Fresh Sister | 5/8/2007, 2:55 pm EST

Jungle Mule!!!!!!

Beelay | 5/8/2007, 2:56 pm EST

Who are Guns ‘n’ Roses?? What’s an Axl Rose? Can I plant one in my garden?

abandonedstation | 5/8/2007, 2:59 pm EST

I wonder how many of these pro-GNR posters are actually Axl…

Jeff | 5/8/2007, 2:59 pm EST

You guys are just bitter because you wrote that November 21st was the firm release date. Idiots.

The Blues is amazing, Chinese Democracy sounds killer (and I HATED that song until this leak!).

It’s good and you know it. Get over yourselves.

Too bad it will never be released.

estebanf | 5/8/2007, 3:01 pm EST

These leaked demos are amazing. TWAT is simply a masterpiece, and Chinese Democracy is killer, a rock bomb.

Anyway, RS will bash GN’R no matter how good their songs could be.

Raz | 5/8/2007, 3:04 pm EST

Has anyone heard or has a link to the song Checkmate? Can anyone even confirm if this song is slated to be on Chinese Democracy? From articles Ive read, most who have listened to the whole album think Checkmate will easily be the best song on the album (Sebastian Bach & Zakk Wylde have stated this just to name a few).

I like all these songs except the Blues (axls voice doesnt sound to great on that one). Most of you are saying that these are just demos but they sound vastly different than demos posted on youtube, meanwhile isnt final mixing supposed to be happening/happened to Chinese Democracy? Any chance these are the final versions?

jungleland | 5/8/2007, 3:05 pm EST

How many times will RS fall for this? These demos have been out for at least 6 months, they all sound like crap, but I’ll bet the CD (should it ever see light of day) will be worth having

Axl's Hair Extensions | 5/8/2007, 3:08 pm EST

I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations for this album. Will this be on par with Appetite or even sound the same, no. These sound (for better or worse) like the natural progression of a lot of the material on UYI 1 & 2 – a lot of queen influenced ballads and overproduced rockers. If you expect these songs (which are unfinished demos) to be Appetite Pt. 2 you’re going to be disappointed regardless of how good/bad the songs are.

Slashoholics Anonymous | 5/8/2007, 3:08 pm EST

These new leaks sound great. Heavy industrial riffs with sick layered soloing by Finck, Fortus, Bumblefoot and Buckethead.

…and a bad review coming from a mag that has featured Jessica Simpson, NSYNC, etc…laughable.

Matt | 5/8/2007, 3:12 pm EST

The problems the band will have if the album ever comes out are:

–People who resent Axl calling the new band Guns N Roses, and refuse to give the new band a chance because of it

–People who expect Appetite For Destruction II.

Personally, I’d put “Better” and “There Was a Time” up against anything in the old band’s catalog. “Madagascar” and “The Blues” are damn good too.

Wayne | 5/8/2007, 3:12 pm EST

I haven’t heard the new versions of these tracks, but this is a horribly written review.

Andrew | 5/8/2007, 3:19 pm EST

These songs are F-ing terrible! You’ve all got to be kidding me with this Sh*t? GnR is long dead.

Bruno | 5/8/2007, 3:19 pm EST

no, there aren’t final versions. They’ll probably sound different (for example: probably chinese democracy will have Ron’s fretless guitar sound in it) and Axl’s vocals gonna rock much more.
ain’t it fun that they put a Slash pic to bash a Gn’R song? Am I the only one seeing a Slash widower or what?

Axl's Weave | 5/8/2007, 3:19 pm EST

Hey Peter Jawrowski, David Spade circa the Hollywood Minute called. He wants his “telephone diss” act back.

GUNS N ROSES LEAKED SONGS! | 5/8/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Those songs are awesome, and if you have any taste in music you would realize that, just because slash and duff and matt arent in the band, your going to rip those leaked songs apart.. Get a life, i hope this article bites you in the ass!! BIRK from CHICAGO!!!

Muzakman | 5/8/2007, 3:21 pm EST

I had these songs last May and really dug them. I’m not a huge fan of “Appetite” though. These songs are more sophisticated. No doubt it will be above the heads of the metal crowd.
You can hear the Queen and Elton John influences, throw in old Gn’R, a little Zeppelin and Nine in Nails, etc. The lyrics have depth and even some maturity.
The problem is that I am afraid Axl will measure success in units sold (as will the record company) The album has a classic feel to it and it may be a classic. Just release it Axl!

Jonh | 5/8/2007, 3:24 pm EST

Axl is great

Chinese Democracy is great song

ha, I knew there was a reason I read the comments….personally Axl hurts my ears but I’ll yell ya’, knowing that both Buckethead and Bumblefoot played on some or all of the tracks listed makes me much more interested in hearing this stuff….thanks for the info.

Imus | 5/8/2007, 3:47 pm EST

Axl is a nappy headed ho.

Rob79 | 5/8/2007, 3:47 pm EST

everything is fake in fakegnr.

Rob79 | 5/8/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Go back to your fakegnr forums, you nerds !

joey | 5/8/2007, 3:51 pm EST

Im the biggest G’N'R fan..since I was literally 7 years old.

And I must say…

These songs are horrific.

Kudos to your PR team, Axl. Glad to see with that $12 million lawsuit DGC slapped on you to recoup in recording expenses, you still have enough in royalties to pay for staffers to assume names and write false praise, blogs, articles, etc. about how great these “leaked” (see also:widely distributed in press junket) are and how your career is back.
You shot yourself in the foot long ago with your lackluster concerts (when you felt like showing up) and completely screwing over the very fans whose very coin paid for your dinner last night.

Save some face. Stop attempting to be relavent. It is a pretty easy facade to see through.

joey | 5/8/2007, 3:54 pm EST

To follow up on what I just said, How many people end their postings with “Chinese Democracy starts now” Sounds like a catchy marketing campaign!

Yeah, Axl, “There Was A Time.” It was 15 years ago…

Oddjob | 5/8/2007, 4:07 pm EST

I thought these all sounded awesome (although, I admit, not worth the 10-year wait). I think you people forget how bad some of the songs on “Use Your Illusion” 1 & 2 were. This writer should go back to listening to Cat Power and commenting on her “awesomeness” and stay out of the rock critiques.

toni | 5/8/2007, 4:08 pm EST

Here’re some results we got from the Axl Pose army:
-No new “gnr” album in 16yrs+ :

What the lobotomized fans say: he’s writing something epic

What it really means: The guy is not a very creative or talented musician

-No original members :

What the lobotomized fans say: It’s still GnR, Axl is there dancing to the old songs

What it really means: We are seeing a cover group of a once great band

-Chinese democracy comes out this year :

What the lobotomized fans say: our idol is back!

What it really means: cash is running out, let’s pull a cash grab tour.

Gustavo | 5/8/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Any idea on when the album is going to be released?

Samuel | 5/8/2007, 4:13 pm EST

“What it really means: The guy is not a very creative or talented musician”

Which explains why none of the former members, despite having released a solid amount of music, have been unable to even sniff the quality of the stuff they were releasing when they were in GnR. By your logic Velvet Revolver should be just as good or better than GnR but, oh wait, it’s not even close, because Axl and Izzy were always the best songwriters in GnR

HollyW00d | 5/8/2007, 4:14 pm EST

Jesus, that review looks like it was written by a bitter 16 year old 30 Seconds to Mars fan. These new songs aren’t even finished yet and they sound amazing.

And BTW, to the idiots screaming these songs leaked last year, you’re wrong. These songs leaked 3 days ago, what you heard before were demos and live versions. This is the first time we’ve heard studio versions of the Blues and Madagascar (which was leaked last month).

I like how all the 30 something losers still stuck in the 80’s think it’s the old GNR or nothing.

frog | 5/8/2007, 4:16 pm EST

I can’t believe anyone still cares about this.

Anonymous | 5/8/2007, 4:19 pm EST

Bwahaha GNR, these songs may have been relevant if the record was released 10 years ago.

joey | 5/8/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Wait…Am I 16 and bitter or 30 and nostalgic?

Oh I know the answer!I’m 24 and right!

Axl IS irrelavent and the songs ARE terrible.

Just You | 5/8/2007, 4:32 pm EST

Keep them coming Axl the songs rock!

John | 5/8/2007, 4:47 pm EST

Obviously someone has a grudge against Axl because these songs are amazing.

MegaSudz | 5/8/2007, 4:51 pm EST

“Gustavo | 5/8/2007, 4:12 pm EST

HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Wher have you heard that before?

Rob | 5/8/2007, 4:59 pm EST

The songs are great. All the GNR forums are buzzing with positve feedback on the songs, and thats what counts.

Dont forget that a critic is just one person, and doesnt speak for everyone. In this case, its one person with an incredibly warped taste in music. Again, the new songs are incredible.

Steven-Chicagon | 5/8/2007, 5:03 pm EST

This coming from a magazine that regularly praises Fallout Boy. Yikes.

Le Roy | 5/8/2007, 5:05 pm EST

Why not agree to disagree? I like the songs and I’m looking forward to the day the album is released. But like the rest of you, I’m just one person. Still I couldn’t give a flying knep(danish word, you guess what it means)about other peoples opinions. It doesn’t change the way I feel, if people don’t like the tracks. And luckily no one is going to force the people who hate the tracks to go out and buy the album. So why argue?

W.A.R. | 5/8/2007, 5:12 pm EST

Glad to see there are REAL fans out there who still appreciate decent music. And by the way, I’ve got some Koolaid… anyone thirsty?

N.O.Y.B. | 5/8/2007, 5:18 pm EST

“Madagascar” will be a killer song indeed, for no other reason than the fact that talking animals are funny.

Xoth | 5/8/2007, 5:25 pm EST

Hate to tell you guys, but just because you can’t get off your high horses and your “GNR no longer exists” statements doesn’t mean these songs can’t kick ass. You constantly batter Axl with “GNR is no more”, “Stop pretending”, and “You can’t rebuild a band with one original member”. Well let me tell you, if you haven’t been to a GNR concert in the last 6 years, you have no room to talk. I stood 30 feet from the stage, watched Axl and the crew blast out 20-something songs, and I can confidently say if you took present-day Robin Finck, Bumblefoot, or Richard Fortus, and replace them with Slash on that stage in 1991 or 1992, every last one of you would say “He’s a great guitarist. He’s just as good, if not better, as Slash!” And you know why, because you can’t get over the fact that there are dedicated GNR fans who can still put up with all the things Axl can put us through and know that we’ll come out of this with a kickass album and a half-million people who comment on anything GNR-related saying to themselves “Wow. I really doubted he could do it, but he did.” That’s the satisfaction we’re looking for, and we’ll get it.

And to make sure this is getting through, these leaks rock. The best material I’ve heard from the band since 1991. These leaks just prove you don’t need a drugged up, boozed out, curly-haired guitarist with a cigarette in his mouth to play an amazing GNR song.

Lefty Drizzell | 5/8/2007, 5:29 pm EST

Axl Rose admitted he had a penis implant.

the people who are waiting for this album are also in line now for the van halen reunion tour .. its not 1988 .. nobody drives a camero any more and partys in the lot beofre the show.. the road may gone on forever but that party did in fact come to an end .. when nirvana arrived and saved us!!

Yep | 5/8/2007, 5:34 pm EST

I heard this too. What’s up with that?!?

Felipe | 5/8/2007, 5:44 pm EST

As I said before… Get Izzy!!!!!!!!!!

Felix | 5/8/2007, 5:47 pm EST

I love Duff, Slash, and Izzy very much and I am very sad that the orginal gnr broke up, but for god sakes get over it. Oh well I guess everyone would be happier if they put out some boring crap like Fall Out Boy. The leaks are amazing and so is New Gnr! Long live GN’R and long live W.Axl Rose!

Buddha Master | 5/8/2007, 5:50 pm EST

This critic must like to hang with 15 year old boys or something. This is some of the greatest rock music I have heard in the last 10 years. Man music like this really puts the music scene of today in perspective. See kids music shouldn’t be formulamatic. This music rocks my bones to the core. God how I have missed GN’R. I love all of these. This critic is a dumb clown period.

Bobby B | 5/8/2007, 5:50 pm EST

I disagree…I think the leaks are amazing, and that album will be well worth the wait. Let’s hold of on truly judging anything until the album is released, huh? Me, I’m not holding onto the past. I’ve seen the new GnR, and they’re fantastic…bring on CD!

Karin_Sixx | 5/8/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Stop living in the past. The new songs are incredible, everything from lyrics to talent of the individual musicans, you need to realize that.

Chris Pitman | 5/8/2007, 5:58 pm EST

trojan | 5/8/2007, 6:24 pm EST

ok, i tend to be realistic over everything, especially when it comes to a wreck of a band like guns, but i downloaded these songs and there are amazing. That review is terrible, it sounds like you didnt even listen to the songs

Johnny b | 5/8/2007, 6:35 pm EST

The critic is an idiot. The songs are good and p.s. how can say an entire janra of music. I bet she’s a fall out boy fan.

Anonymous | 5/8/2007, 6:41 pm EST

TWAT is “November Rain Pt 2″ (or Estranged Pt 2, take your pick). Been there, heard that. But I will say “The Blues” does contain enough Queen/Elton pomp flourishes to make it stand out.

The one really good song though, is “Chinese Democracy”. Its not fair to compare it ro the old band; it’s not 1987 anymore.
That’s about as good a song from nu-GNR as any fan could want.

Karin_Sixx | 5/8/2007, 6:44 pm EST

Futher more, after scrolling down and reading reviews from people that actually have taken the time to listen to these songs, hardcore GN’R fans or not, the reviewer has come across looking like some kind of ignorant moron, so, congratulations to you, you’ve really earnt your money writing this artical. It’s for people like you there is no good music nowadays, and the charts are filled with people like Jessica Simpson, instead of people that are real creative and musical genius’s like Axl Rose.

vince41090 | 5/8/2007, 6:46 pm EST

Great Review….
JK!
You obviously didn’t listen to any of the songs, and just repeated what you read on a random idiot’s blog when you googled “Nu-GNR”. If these songs are bad, I have no idea what you would consider “good”.

TWAT | 5/8/2007, 6:48 pm EST

The chorus to TWAT is absolutely terrible.

Rusty | 5/8/2007, 6:55 pm EST

Who cares about GNR?

Me | 5/8/2007, 6:56 pm EST

Wow did this reviewer get it wrong. You need a fact checker here at RS.
These song are amazing.

pmasdot | 5/8/2007, 6:59 pm EST

not surprised, the only good thing GNR ever did was Appetite for Destruction, that’s it, they are the most overrated band in history

lame | 5/8/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Gotta love these 2 bit journalists who say anything just for attention.

You probably think these songs are finished. You should be arrested for being a pirate.

rocknroll4life | 5/8/2007, 7:02 pm EST

The best song off CD isn’t even here yet– ‘Better’. If that riff doesn’t melt your brains, then you need to go back to your boyband collection. Axl is one of the most inspired lyricists and frontmen of rock, even today.

Jr | 5/8/2007, 7:04 pm EST

GNR is awesome who cares if they don’t have all there original bendmembers they still are awesome, and so are there songs old and new I listened to a bit of these songs there perfectly fien to me.

Envenom | 5/8/2007, 7:09 pm EST

Thank god for the rest of the world your opinion is irrelevant. Go bake some cookies.

Dan | 5/8/2007, 7:43 pm EST

I saw GNR last May in NYC and they were great…i have been dying to hear TWAT and Better again…

Can’t wait for the album

I’m really surprised RS was so harsh. I have listened to all of the leaked tracks and is it me or are they the best rock songs I have heard in a long, long time? Ok, maybe they aren’t on par with Sweet Child of Mine or Paradise City, but who really expected that? However, these songs, especially “Chinese Democracy” and “There was a time” completely rock. I can’t wait for the album now.

RB | 5/8/2007, 7:45 pm EST

The more I hear these songs, the more I disagree with this write up…the songs are great! The reviewer is absurdly harsh, in my opinion. I’m more anxious than ever for CD to come out…

we only go up to 9 | 5/8/2007, 7:59 pm EST

liz, you can never try to rock too much. I swear, rollingstone just cannot abide hard rock. I thought led zeppelin was an isolated incident but it looks like there is a trend to all this. Whatever the reason for it, youre nuts. This album blows away most the manufactured fluff that the labels spit out every few months.

Oh and “better” is just sick.

yeaaaaaa stan | 5/8/2007, 8:11 pm EST

there is a reason why they are calling this album Chinese Democracy. It will never happen and people will die trying to make you think it’s worth it.

John "fuzzbucket" Williams | 5/8/2007, 8:44 pm EST

Regardless of being a Gn’R fan or not, The reviewer just reminds me of someone that’s trying to be cool and has no integrity. Axl is just doing his thing, asking for no attention. He’s not trying to kiss anyone’s ass. I think music needs more people like Axl Rose. He play s by his own rules instead of being puppets for the music industry. And the final version of the album will be much better than some old versions of songs that just leaked.

Toby | 5/8/2007, 8:50 pm EST

Just heard “the Blues” Axl RUN don’t walk to a rock band.. Outta of Ammo and Wilted Roses should be the name of the band..

uzi suicide | 5/8/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Listen to ‘Better’ after a few glasses of wine and at top volume and you’ll discover the sheer joy of rock n’ roll once again.

tim | 5/8/2007, 8:58 pm EST

the intro to cd is mindblowing

chinese democracy should be 1st single

Gabe | 5/8/2007, 9:00 pm EST

I would agree that the reviewer is a moron. Not a very big fan of Chinese Democracy, but the other three are great.

paul | 5/8/2007, 9:02 pm EST

better, cd, the blues, madagascar, twat, catcher in the rye kick ass

the only one i dont love is irs because the lyrics arent what i would call shakespearean

terrance | 5/8/2007, 9:05 pm EST

i think the songs all rock

whats lame is that all media outlets think its the “cool” thing to bash the new guns because everyone else is doing it. If they actually listen to the songs they will find out that the majority of them kick ass

cheesecrop | 5/8/2007, 9:25 pm EST

Everybody who likes the tracks seems to be taking it as a life saving proposition. Expecting it to be like it was 20 yrs. ago is a little ridiculous of course. I imagine if it ever comes out Chinese Democracy will sell some copies, but don’t look for an earthshaking event. I do agree w/ a lot of you though who say RS can’t take hard rock and metal.

cheesecrop | 5/8/2007, 9:26 pm EST

The problem is they can’t take hard rock or metal until they adjust themselves to it, which sometimes takes years.

tommy | 5/8/2007, 9:41 pm EST

the songs ive heared all kick ass

Ray | 5/8/2007, 9:46 pm EST

Hmm.I think the 100 comments below speak for themselves. The majority here says this review is crap.

Indeed.I hope this backlash justifies a response from them.

john | 5/8/2007, 10:11 pm EST

umm the leaks are phenomenal…i dont think we should be taking any opinions from magazines who put Kayne West on their cover….

JK | 5/8/2007, 10:15 pm EST

You really need to hear these tracks on a good sound system for the full effect. I listened to them on my lame pc speakers and thought they were alright, but when I ran them thru my surround sound cranked, I was floored.

Who cares about axl’s voice, listen to the musicians. This is a band people, although they have some kind of a “chinese” type democracy- one guy has absolute control.

Great to see these songs offered up to the general public like this…
I’m reading much sarcasm from the reviewer.

Disagree | 5/8/2007, 10:58 pm EST

These songs are awesome! Can’t wait for the rest of the CD

bob o | 5/8/2007, 11:10 pm EST

I’ve been waiting to tear this album apart since Axl first showed off the new GNR around 2000.

Truth is, sitting here with sharpened knives, I’d say this stuff actually isn’t half bad.

RockGod | 5/8/2007, 11:33 pm EST

CHINESE DEMOCRACY STARTS NOW.

barry | 5/8/2007, 11:53 pm EST

they sound great this journalist is clearly crazy or has a biased view on the band

The Truth | 5/8/2007, 11:54 pm EST

Are these songs great…. no
do they compare to the old stuff….. not even close
are they better then any of the other hard rock music put out in the 21st century… Absolutely

I think this album is going to be bashed by every major magazine for the shear fact that they want it to fail because they’ve been talking about it for the past 15-16 years. Its like a big F you to axl for making the fans wait because some people will read the reviews and change their minds.

I really don’t care about what some john mayer fan tells me about the new gnr. This the same magazine that ripped some of the greatest cds. For instance Ritual de lo habitual was given a 1 star and now is ranked by the same magazine to be in the top rock albums of all time.

I still would rather see the original cast but right now that will never happen. Funny thing is that if this album who come out under axl rose instead of guns n roses it would probably viewed as a masterpiece. In my opinion thats the way it should be released. I believe GNR should be left to its mythical status. Axl Rose should reserve the name for in the situation that the band reunites. Personally i don’t care anymore about these rumors and leaks, until i have a mastered copy of the album in my hand, i will not give the time of day to this crap

aussie. | 5/9/2007, 12:58 am EST

the fact of the matter is, these so called reporters get there news from the net these days, liz is speaking through her ass, she wouldn’t know good music if it smacked her in the face, this hole mag is a joke, this is just some nobody’s over opinionated grudge, you can get all the news you want on the net, most people love the new songs, why because there good, these leaks kick major ass! rock on axl rose, and i hope the internet puts this mag out of busniess .

? | 5/9/2007, 1:06 am EST

Yea, they’re different types of songs than the original GNR. But in case this reviewer hasn’t noticed, music has evolved since then. GNR single handedly saved rock music at the end of the 80s, and hopefully Axl will be able to do it again with Chinese Democracy, because rock music nowadays is no good.

toni | 5/9/2007, 1:29 am EST

Here’re some results we got from the Axl Pose army:
-No new “gnr” album in 16yrs+ :

What the lobotomized fans say: he’s writing something epic

What it really means: The guy is not a very creative or talented musician

-No original members :

What the lobotomized fans say: It’s still GnR, Axl is there dancing to the old songs

What it really means: We are seeing a cover group of a once great band

-Chinese democracy comes out this year :

What the lobotomized fans say: our idol is back!

What it really means: cash is running out, let’s pull a cash grab tour.

Sam | 5/9/2007, 1:37 am EST

How anyone is still a GnR fan is beyond me. I mean it doesn’t matter if the album really was good (which I doubt), 16 years to make an album is ridiculous. Highway 61 Revisited? 6 days. Elephant? 2 weeks. Living With War? One week.
Honestly, I can’t wait till this album finally comes out and the fan base drops like a rock. It’s about time.

K.B | 5/9/2007, 1:37 am EST

you a 50cent fan toni? or little liz’s brother?.

K.B | 5/9/2007, 1:39 am EST

sam the fan base will never drop, because the music is good, it’s about the music and not the drama after all, something some people can’t understand, you need a life if you focus on and get “hurt by the wait”.

Prophet | 5/9/2007, 1:47 am EST

Sam you are a complete and utter D-bag. Just to be accurate though, it hasn’t take “16″ years to make this album. That was the last time GNR released an album. Then they proceeded to go on the longest tour in rock history until 1993. Then they sat around for a couple of years until everyone had quit around 1996. Axl supposedly started working on Chinese Democracy about 10 years ago in 1997. If you’re gonna bash people for no reason, at least try to be accurate!

frehley4ever | 5/9/2007, 1:47 am EST

What do you expect?
GNR its about feelings and attitude; theese 5 songs may be listening not under the eye-bussines critical thinking but the musical fight and really good taste in art

poober | 5/9/2007, 4:17 am EST

aksul rows RAWX 4EVR

AS | 5/9/2007, 4:41 am EST

Okay, I am a fan of GnR since the early 90s and I have my problems to accept the latest version of GnR!

But if you listen to these leaks without any ulterior motives: they are really amazing! Let´s wait for the album versions. An sorry RollingStone, but yor mag became to one of the unneeded mags arround.

Take care Gunners!

Danutz | 5/9/2007, 5:16 am EST

The Blues is absolutely brilliant.

TWAT I find okay, on a similiar
level of Estranged.

IRS is very catchy (yes it does
have lyrics…Is that bad?)

Chinese Democracy is musically
great, but I dont like Axls voice
here. Very boring song.

All in all, im looking forward
to this album if it ever makes it.

BTW, the journalist that wrote
this needs a long vacation.

AnW | 5/9/2007, 5:52 am EST

Wow, shocking review.
Why is Slash even mentioned/pictured? He hasn’t been in the band for more than 10 years- Robin Fink has been in GnR longer than Slash was…
The leaks are awesome, anyone who says otherwise are obviously band-wagon jumpers. Chinese Democracy is going to be one of the best albums of the decade- much better than MCR, or any other flash in the pan bands ruining the music scene at the moment.

JJ | 5/9/2007, 6:32 am EST

everyone has got it in for Axl, all the mags. They wont give new gnr a chance cause half of um are still stuck up slashs arse.

Lili | 5/9/2007, 7:05 am EST

You should judge the leaks without taking into account the past of GN’R (past is gone) and the fact that they’ve taken like 15 years to develop.
These songs are very good, but comparing them to something that took place 20 years ago…
Live the present!

makke | 5/9/2007, 7:20 am EST

bad review and besides they are leaks. These leaks > everything thats popular atm, including VR.

jon | 5/9/2007, 7:49 am EST

where do you get the leaks from?

Joe B. | 5/9/2007, 8:06 am EST

“Chinese Democracy” tries waaaay too hard to rock? Wtf does that mean? Worst review ever

Tim | 5/9/2007, 8:28 am EST

Thanks for the review Liz !

I’m tired of reading fakegnr propaganda. That band is a fraud. Period.

Dave | 5/9/2007, 8:30 am EST

Considering the amount of time these songs have supposedly been worked on, they’re terribly underwhelming. I didn’t have high expectations, but the leaked tracks don’t even live up to mediocre expectations.

wolfxxx | 5/9/2007, 8:41 am EST

IZZY has a new album coming out this month on itunes.

DW | 5/9/2007, 8:41 am EST

The leaks rock socks. And for the song “Better” alone I would purchase the album.
Sure Axl’s voice isn’t top notch all the time, but they’re demos.
Sure the chorus to TWAT is a bit bad, but the last half of it with the guitar solos take it to another level.

*VV* | 5/9/2007, 9:08 am EST

Guns N’ Roses aren’t relevant any more?
So why do we have so many comments to this article?

sara robets | 5/9/2007, 9:18 am EST

i luv gnr but l lve the cock more

the speakers | 5/9/2007, 10:06 am EST

wow. this stuff has none of the flow of GNR, and the producing is some of the worst I’ve ever heard. Very disappointed.

to:
Joe B. | 5/9/2007, 8:06 am EST
“Chinese Democracy” tries waaaay too hard to rock? Wtf does that mean?…”

What that means is this: Good songwriting should appear effortless. Sadly, this is not the case with your beloved GnR. I’m sorry for your loss.

alex | 5/9/2007, 10:32 am EST

I’m a Tommy Stinson fan, now-bass player for GnR, former bass player for the Replacements. Does anyone know if he has written any songs for Chinese Democracy?

Excellent review–thanks! Can’t wait to hear the tracks, even though I know I’m gonna be disappointed. They never got it together without Steven Adler.

Slash | 5/9/2007, 11:28 am EST

Axl Rose = Roger Waters without the talent

Chinese Democracy = the third Boston album

Axl is about 1 year away from playing State Fairs and then a complete mental breakdown.

What a fu*cking joke.

Harry | 5/9/2007, 11:49 am EST

Wasn’t it early 2006 when Axl Rose proclaimed, “The people will hear music by the end of the year.” Haha, yeah right…so much for that.

john | 5/9/2007, 12:20 pm EST

We did hear music when he said we would. I remember hearing the leaks. He never said we’d hear the music in the form of a finshed cd, just said we’d hear music, and we did. So Axl was telling the truth

wierd review, i like the leaks, chinese democracy intro is very intense, i didn’t think the new music would sound that good

Harry said:Wasn’t it early 2006 when Axl Rose proclaimed, “The people will hear music by the end of the year.” Haha, yeah right…so much for that.

ACTUALLY HARRY, IF YOU WENT TO SEE THE BAND LAST YEAR, YOU WOULD HAVE HEARD THE NEW MUSIC, SO HE WAS RIGHT.

Bruno | 5/9/2007, 1:23 pm EST

yes, Tommy Stinson wrote some stuff. everytime you hear bass played in these musics, it was played by Tommy, for example. He is called ‘the general’ by Axl, and apparently they recorded a music called ‘the general’. we’ll see if it’s on chinese democracy.

mr w | 5/9/2007, 1:23 pm EST

why should we listen to a magazine that boasts Panic at the Disco, in which Axl has more talent in his finger nail than that god awful band??? The leaks are awesome, album should be brillant, but people have to understand, it’s not 1987 anymore. Long live new GNR!!!!

Nick722 | 5/9/2007, 1:25 pm EST

Are we listening to the same songs here?

John | 5/9/2007, 1:27 pm EST

The leaks have proved to most of us that Axl still has it and the new GNR fn ROCKS! RS get your heads out of your A$$!

Dave | 5/9/2007, 2:00 pm EST

The new songs rock! When you see them live, you see how good they really are. GNR is the best band out there right now. VR is close. There are no new bands out there that can touch them.

Timroc | 5/9/2007, 2:05 pm EST

What does it matter to ya, when you’ve got a job, you’ve got to do it well, you’ve got to give the OTHER BAND a hannnnnddd……

Ellis | 5/9/2007, 2:48 pm EST

Don’t see why this was deleted since it IS on topic. This is a review from Metalsucks.net, and it does the songs justice.

Whe n you get on the site, you’ll have to scroll down cause all the descriptions are posted seperately, not all in one headline. Anyways, here is what they said. QUOTED

CHINESE DEMOCRACY
Oh boy oh boy, do I live for days like today. Three brand spankin’ new studio-quality tracks from the perpetually in-the-works Axl Rose/ Guns N’ Roses comeback album Chinese Democracy have leaked, and your good friends Axl and Vince will be sharing them with you over the course of the next three days.

First up: the title track. It would logically seem that this is the song intended to open the album: the extended, moody build-up with the people whispering in Chinese, those first sweet, fuzz covered licks that Robin Finck teases us with, Axl’s sudden scream, and then an EXPLOSION of rock. Like the “Madagascar” track that leaked earlier this year, it would seem that Axl’s vocals still need some work, but otherwise, man, does this song (which the band has already been playing live since 2001) kick some major ass. It’s like some super-sick hybrid of GN’R and White Zombie: industrialized hard rock with just the right amount of tasty grooves to remind us why we always loved Axl in the first place. Finck and Buckethead trade off during the solo, with Finck supplying the sustain-heavy first half and BH going all Tom Morello on our asses for the big finish. The completed version should be KILLER.

THE BLUES
This “November Rain”-esque ballad is, again, a song that Axl’s reconfigured Guns have been playing live since ‘01, and has been a fan favorite just as long. This is the first time we’re hearing a studio-quality version, though, and just let me say, it’s the only one of the leaks I’ve heard so far that I think is ready for release without any further touch-ups. That’s the always dependable Dizzy Reed tickling the ivories; meanwhile, the contrasting guitar solos between Robin Finck (who, a friend commented, “plays like Axl sings”) and the heretofore unsung Richard Fortus (pictured right) illustrate that Axl is fully utilizing his three unique axe slingers (it’s not hard to imagine a video for this song with at least one of these dudes standing atop a cliff or rising out of the water or whatever), while the orchestration should take you right back to 1992, when a certain video trilogy was in constant rotation on MTV.

THERE WAS A TIME
A friend once commented to me that one of the things he really loved about Guns N’ Roses was their ability to take a three minute song and turn it into a six minute song- that “Paradise City,” for example, contains a seemingly endless amount of soloing that stretches out the running time while avoiding ever becoming mundane.

Well, that friend should leave “There Was A Time.” Nearly half of its almost seven minute running time is solos either by Robin Finck (first two solos) or Buckethead (outro solo)- and it might be both guitar players’ finest hours where they really give Slash a run for his money. When I first heard about this song in Rolling Stone way back in 1999, I assumed that any song Axl was jokingly referring to as “TWAT” would be hard n’ heavy- but this is actually another epic track, densely layered and constantly shifting between harder-edged rock and more emotional power balladry. The band has only performed this song live once, which is too bad- it is truly excellent.

I.R.S.
Here it is: the last of the new GN’R leaks… for now. I’m completely talking out of my ass, but since this version of the song is a hybrid of the 1999 Buckethead-less demo and the vastly different demo that seemed to be the basis for the live version of the song played last year, I’m guessing that version of the song was recorded sometime around 2000/2001 when Buckethead first joined the band.

In any case, it only cements what the previous leaks have already revealed: that whether or not you think it’s Guns N’ Roses, Axl has surrounded himself with some amazing musicians and is sitting on some killer material. Here’s hoping we finally get to experience the rest of Chinese Democracy soon… legally or otherwise.

00oYear_zero000o | 5/9/2007, 2:55 pm EST

The songs sound great.

And if you´ve listen to the previous demos, you can see the evolution of the songs.
These version probably ain´t the defenitive songs either.

(if there is such thing as “definitive version”)

I like the song “better” ve, very much. The others I have yet to hear. Good songs are goods songs but its still not the original g n’ r.

This music is crap. Axe Rose is a loser. I saw him a few months back. Suprisingly enough he actually showed up. The ass was 3 hours late though. On top of that the junky couldn’t get through 1 damn song without going off stage. Big Loser. His hair looked ridiculous. His voice was even more ridiculous and these leaks sound like jokes. The sad thing is that they’re not. The sadder thing is that it took his sorry ass how many years to put out such awful music? Too many to count or care.
He’s less than zero.

Errr…how many comments here for Axl’s GN’R? That goes to show how much people want him back and to kick ass all over again. Of all his contemporaries, he’s the only one who has remained true to himself and his vision; long prolonged as it may be. You guys trashed the Stooges’ ‘The Weirdness’ as it’s the most kick-ass record so far this year. Shame on ya, R.S! Fire some of your so called reporters and bring back some real blood rock journos. It’ll save your mag, and Axl will do the same for rock n’ roll.

Faldo | 5/9/2007, 6:41 pm EST

And while we kinda like the unabashed brawn of “IRS,” it features Axl hawking really bad lyrics he knows are “lyrics.”

huh? What the fuck does that even mean? Who the hell wrote this review? No way a credible music journalist. No way. This HAS to be a fake review. No way. I dont buy it.

The reviewer should understand that Axl Rose & the talented replacements are not the same old bluesy GNR, theyve progressed to form a new sound. Most real artists do this. Even if you think Axl is a D-BAG (which he is) these song are still pretty fucking good. Sure there is definley some indie music going on now that is better. But these leaked songs are more lively, interesting, and just plain superior than 90% of current Mainstream Rock, and most of the comments on here seem to agree.

Who knows if this album will ever be released or if it should. With so called critics ready to discard anything done by Axl & the talented replacements without taking into account the actual quality of the songs. It would probably best serve Axl Rose’s enormous ego to have the Most Mythical Album Never Released, at least that title is something he may actually be able to acheive

tim | 5/9/2007, 6:57 pm EST

Ali_G | 5/9/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Ellis,

The reason that review was deleted was because it was in contrast to this “review” done by RS. MetalFile actually judged the songs by their own merits instead of the fact that Slash, Izzy and Duff aren’t in the band as is clearly evident by the title of the article. Imagine that, not making up your mind before you listen to the music! What a novel concept!

Mother Goose | 5/9/2007, 8:15 pm EST

I think this rockscar dude has got to be retarded…or at least autistic.
Your dearest Axl stopped being relevant when I took my Gibson Les Paul elsewhere.
He is a whiny bitch and should be put down like a horse with a broken leg.

Simon Cowell | 5/9/2007, 8:34 pm EST

I’ve heard it..
and it isn’t good.
In fact, it so far from good that it’s not even bad…
it’s Extraoridinarily repugnant.
And Axl smells.
No, seriously. I saw him at a club in LA the other night, and he smelled of Aquanet, KFC and piss.
He’s a bloody wanker I say.

Mario Kart | 5/9/2007, 8:36 pm EST

Jar Jar Binks > Axl Rose

Axl's Mom | 5/9/2007, 8:36 pm EST

Does anybody know when the new Van Halen album is coming out?
I just love that David Lee Roth.

JayJay | 5/9/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Axl is a retard. And I’m sure he loves the cock.

asanine | 5/9/2007, 9:26 pm EST

Wow, I’ve alway hated G & R, but I dunno, these new songs are great. CD is perfect, as is he Blues.

Good job Axl.

Michael | 5/9/2007, 9:59 pm EST

Why don’t they review the guitarists who are acutally playing, instead of the one who isn’t?

Sharon | 5/9/2007, 10:08 pm EST

This is the lousiest review ever written for RS.

Ali_G | 5/9/2007, 10:17 pm EST

Hey Slash,

Grow up and learn some class. The real Slash has more class in his pinkie than you are showing here.

Huff Huffner | 5/9/2007, 10:19 pm EST

Poor Axl needs to settle down with a nice lady like Paris Hilton… They both can sing… What Axl Rose needs now, is help from his friends… TOM CRUISE WHERE ARE YOU?… Poor Axl has seen too many psychs! His blood has turned to acid, and his hair looks like earth, wind & fire worms!

Ex-Subscriber | 5/9/2007, 10:21 pm EST

Slash? That’s ten years ago! Care to mention TOMMY STINSON (ex-The Replacements) on bass, ROBIN FINCK (ex-Nine Inch Nails) on guitar and FRANK FERRER (Paul McCartney) on drums?

Jonathan | 5/9/2007, 10:24 pm EST

Actually, the new songs are fantastic.

starchild | 5/9/2007, 10:28 pm EST

Did the writer even LISTEN to the songs? The guitar solos make Slash look like one lousy amateur. “There was a Time” has one of the best guitaring EVER.

Ellis P. | 5/9/2007, 10:29 pm EST

I’m not even a fan, but I like Tommy Stinson (who plays bass in Guns n’ roses) so I cecked the songs out. You know what? They are amazing! I agree, what a lousy review!

Mr. Brownstone | 5/9/2007, 10:40 pm EST

‘Catcher In The Rye’ is pretty good actually.

Bill | 5/9/2007, 10:51 pm EST

Better is a great song, but it’s the only good song on the album

Howard | 5/9/2007, 10:56 pm EST

“Chinese Democracy” and “Better” are great rock songs.

mike | 5/9/2007, 10:58 pm EST

what a stupid review. this is some of the best music ever made. wanna hear the best guitar solo ever? listen to there was a time.

scorpio | 5/9/2007, 11:05 pm EST

Axl sounds better than ever and the songs are worth listening for the guitar work alone.

Branton S. | 5/9/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Looks like it’s not Axl who is living in the past, but most of his critics are. People should stop making silly jokes and eventually LISTEN to the music, wich – by the way – is amazing.

Aaron S. | 5/9/2007, 11:16 pm EST

If that is the dude from Nine Inch Nails playing guitar on these tracks, then Trent is an idiot for letting him go. The guitaring is out of this world and so are the songs. The Rolling Stone review is a joke.

Tyson | 5/9/2007, 11:24 pm EST

Though these songs still need some work in my opinion, they are unquestionably better than most mainstream music that I’ve heard in years. After all of these years, Axl can still give me chills.

joe | 5/9/2007, 11:50 pm EST

the intro on cd is mindblowing with the guitar riff about 1 minute in

that opening riff is fucking amazing lol i can’t believe this review is serious

joe | 5/9/2007, 11:53 pm EST

the buckethead solo in twat 424 in stands up against most solos that i have ever heard

William Bottini | 5/10/2007, 12:00 am EST

This is a horrible review

you’re much better off deciding for yourselves

josh | 5/10/2007, 12:03 am EST

this are only demos and i fell they all kick ass

better irs chinese democracy twat the blues

and my personal favorite is catcher in the rye which was written about john lennon and brian may plays on it

dan | 5/10/2007, 12:08 am EST

the fact that its a new band and not izzy duff and slash playing with axl shouldn’t have any barring on how these songs are judged. Because there is no reason for these songs to get a review unless it was a biased review by someone who is anti axl and the new band

dangeorgio | 5/10/2007, 12:12 am EST

axl should stick to doing drugs, not making music.

Rockin Dok | 5/10/2007, 1:19 am EST

Seriously, why would somebody care about G’n'R in 2007?

These guys were pretty solid 15 years ago, and these leaks might not have been a total failure (though definitely not good), but there’s so much better music being made right now. This whole discussion is going to be null and void when this album comes out in a couple months and the 50,000 people who bother paying attention to this are the only ones who buy Chinese Democracy.

Samuel | 5/10/2007, 1:36 am EST

“Seriously, why would somebody care about G’n’R in 2007?”

You cared enough to read the article and supposedly downloaded the songs, listened to them, and wrote a response to this weak excuse for an article. Would you do the same if tracks from a new Poison album leaked? Probably not

Ellis | 5/10/2007, 1:41 am EST

Ali_G

I’m glad someone read the review. And yes I have listened to all of the leaks that have been released thus far. I have had live versions of these songs for quite some time now. I’ve been listening to the live tracks for a good 6 months. I have live and demo versions of Better, The Blues, Chinese Democracy, Madagascar, and IRS. I have only demos of Catcher in the Rye and There Was A Time. And only live versions of Rhiad and Silkworms.

So, let me now do my review. IRS gives the fans a taste of Pitman’s synth work and also shows off what Tommy, Bubblefoot, and the rest have to offer in musicianship. Axl still has it on this track with the voice that we all love and takes us back to the early days.

“The Blues” is a specatcular song that starts off with the piano playing of Dizzy that is identical to the intro done at the Boston 2002 show. The entire sounds like it came straight from this legendary show, all the way down to the very note. The piano playing of Dizzy and the orchistra continues through the entire song as Axl shows that he still has it. Bumblefoot kicks into a great solo. At the 3:50 mark, Axl kicks it into high gear and hits some very high notes. VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!

“Chinese Democracy” starts out with an intro of whispering and talking in Chinese before bringing the fans a “Mr. Brownstone” sounding Axl. This song sounds the most like what would be on Appetite. A very rocking song that beats the hell out of anything on MTV and radio these days. A very good solo is in this song, something not found in todays rock.

john | 5/10/2007, 3:17 am EST

Rockin Dock…..”better music being made now” WHO?!?! WHERE?!?! are you kidding me? there hasnt been any great rock records since 1994….wake up….you must be 15 years old…

Blake Sabbath | 5/10/2007, 6:10 am EST

I just hate the uncertainty behind this project…

Joao | 5/10/2007, 7:20 am EST

Personally from what i’ve heard the only real good song that seems to be really worth of some talk is CIHINESE DEMOCARCY. It has a hard rocking guitar riff, a cool intro, and Axl’s voice is damn amzing.

Axl, give this album a chance and REALESE IT once and for all

Gunnerbcn | 5/10/2007, 7:49 am EST

Please try to clean your ears!
This leaks are ‘leaks’ not finally songs but they are FANTASTIC. Only a genious can made this!
Wait to CD … will kick ass!!

JoNHa Bolzanabis | 5/10/2007, 9:54 am EST

What do you wan´t, today´s music it´s basically did in one computer, Guns N Roses and Axl Rose is trying to revive the Rock and Roll that was killed by the Hip Hop and the Electonic Music

dax Franzen | 5/10/2007, 11:28 am EST

i listened to sum of the songs, which is unimportant…. how can u even call a band guns n roses when the only people left in it are dizzy and axl…. the real guns n roses is one of my all time favourites…and this is guns n roses aint nothin but a no good tribute made by a madman.

GoGuns | 5/10/2007, 11:35 am EST

Just by the length of this post alone it is apparent just how much people are either really looking forward to the album or just how much they really are pissed at how long it is taking.

nico1138 | 5/10/2007, 11:39 am EST

GoGuns has a good point.
Just by the number of people who post here with good reviwes of the new songs, it´s clear that not eveything is black and white, and not eveyone hates this songs as this article implies

pek | 5/10/2007, 12:15 pm EST

Rockin Dork….you’re a dork all right. The new tracks were sweet in concert..album will be for sure.

Felipe | 5/10/2007, 12:59 pm EST

Why do you look at me when you hate me
Why should I look at you when you
make me hate you too
I sense a smell of retribution in the air
I don’t even understand why the fuck
you even care
And I don’t need your jealousy yeah
Why drag me down in your misery
And when you stare don’t you think I feel it
But I’m gonna deal it back to you in spades
When I’m havin’ fun ya know I can’t conceal it
‘Cause I know you’d never cut it in my game
Oh no
And when you’re talkin’ about a vasectomy
Yeah
I’ll be writin’ down your obituary
History

You got your bitches with
the silicone injections
Crystal meth and yeast infections
Bleached blond hair, collagen lip projections
Who are you to criticize my intentions
Got your subtle manipulative devices
Just like you I got my vices
I got a thought that would be nice
I’d like to crush your head tight in my vice
Pain!!

And that goes for all you punks in the press
That want to start shit by printin’ lies
Instead of the things we said
That means you
Andy Secher at Hit Parader
Circus Magazine
Mick Wall at Kerrang
Bob Guccione Jr. at Spin,
What you pissed off cuz your dad gets more
pussy than you?
Fuck you
Suck my fuckin’ dick

You be rippin’ off the fuckin’ kids
While they be payin’ their hard earned
money to read about the bands
They want to know about
Printin’ lies startin’ controversy
You wanta antagonize me
Antagonize me motherfucker
Get in the ring motherfucker
And I’ll kick your bitchy little ass
Punk

I don’t like you, I just hate you
I gonna kick your ass, oh yeah! oh yeah!

You may not like our integrity yeah
We built a world out of anarchy oh yeah!

And in this corner weighin in at 850 pounds,
Guns N’ Roses

Get in the ring
Yeah!

Yeah this song is dedicated to All the Guns n’ fuckin’ Roses fans
Who stuck with us through all the
Fucking shit
And to all those opposed…
Hmm…well

Jacob | 5/10/2007, 3:13 pm EST

First off, I’m not a huge Guns N Roses fan…..although some of their work is very very good. I can’t deny that. That have just never put out a whole album that I could enjoy all the way through. I have to say, though….while I thought this would be a joke…these songs do sound pretty good. I’ll buy this album……if it ever comes out.

Bill Bones | 5/10/2007, 4:19 pm EST

i’d buy it.. why not? took 15 years to make.

matt | 5/10/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Rollingstone is a little harsh on these songs. For the most part, the leaked tracks are pretty good. Some of the songs either sounded outdated or derivative of earlier GnR tracks though. If anything these songs prove that Axl has been doing something over the past ten years. Now if only he would release the damn album…

wildvoodoo | 5/10/2007, 4:58 pm EST

I heard that Axhole Rose and Michael jackson were making a record together entitled: All the Plastic Surgery that Money Can Buy! Guns and Roses were a band. Once upon a time. The rest of the guys got sick of their singer who somehow convinced himself that he was the center of the universe. More like a black hole. If/when this “album” ever comes out will it be relevant to normal humans? I think not.

Marianela | 5/10/2007, 5:53 pm EST

But…I like these new songs. I don’t share the same viewpoint of this writer.

Andrew | 5/10/2007, 8:25 pm EST

It’s time for Axl to release the album and have the balls to take whatever reaction the critics give him. Axl seems to think that he has to create some sort of musical masterpiece to last the ages.

chinese democracy | 5/10/2007, 8:47 pm EST

this album is kicking ass and these songs are only rough demos

chinese democracy | 5/10/2007, 8:50 pm EST

this album is kicking ass and these songs are only demos

Half Baked | 5/10/2007, 10:18 pm EST

These songs are great. Anybody expecting them to sound like old GnR is silly. Different band completely. But the music is good. In fact better than I had anticipated.

Weiland | 5/10/2007, 10:24 pm EST

it sounds great. Better than what other members of Guns And Roses are doing.

Marty E. | 5/10/2007, 10:26 pm EST

I miss Izzy, Slash, & Duff as much as the next guy, but you’re being unfair to Axl here.

“Chinese Democracy”, “The Blues”, and “IRS” are respectable enough. “TWAT” is just ok.

As for other tracks that have leaked, “Madagascar” is excellent, and “Better” isn’t half bad either.

BONEDOG | 5/10/2007, 10:32 pm EST

Hey! wildvoodoo! GnRs absolute worst will still always sound better than your very best. Oops! You aint got none, son..

’sides, Van Halen Rules!!

Bob | 5/10/2007, 11:27 pm EST

I have always despised Axl Rose and Guns N Roses, but I’m sticking with the majority here; These songs sound pretty damn good. Not nearly as bad as this so called “journalist” here makes them out to be.

Ray | 5/10/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Muha.Coming from the magazine that gave “Contraband” a four-star review,I wouldn’t take this too seriously.

If you want to hear the same old, tired ass-stick to the basics-Appetite-like rock, grab yourself a copy of Velvet Revolvers upcoming “Libertad”.

Jesus.I could literally pick apart this entire review.I will say, however … That “The Blues” and “Chinese Democracy” alone were worth the wait.

“November Rain” the musical? Good god.Where do they come up with this crap?

john | 5/10/2007, 11:36 pm EST

its a little different than old guns but the songs are all qreat and span alot of different areas of rock music

bobjones | 5/11/2007, 1:32 am EST

some of us have been waiting half our lives for “november rain- the musical”

im just saying…

this is the same RS that always bashes oasis for some reason or another,

rhiad | 5/11/2007, 2:46 am EST

I think this songs are the best rock music i`ve heard in years. And yes they are only demos. Can`t immagine how they will sound in real studio album version. TWAT is one of the most beautiful songs for me since Since I`ve Been Loving You from Zeppelin.

Ted | 5/11/2007, 6:39 am EST

This review is just proof of why I don’t buy my music, or watch movies, according to what someone else says.

Muzakman | 5/11/2007, 10:59 am EST

Personally, I would prefer to know what an esteemed critic like Kurt Loder, Anthony DeCurtis or David Fricke think of the tracks.

Rusty | 5/11/2007, 12:40 pm EST

How is this even Guns and Roses without Izzy, Slash and Duff?

It would be like Robert Plant rounding up a bunch of hired hands and going on the road as Led Zeppelin.

JR | 5/11/2007, 12:42 pm EST

Who cares? That ship has sailed! Appetite for Destruction came out 20 years ago – amazing then and still holds up now – it’s a classic. The magic that was once GNR (a hungry band with a sound that destroyed hair metal) is gone. Axl is grasping for something out of his reach.

Joel | 5/11/2007, 12:50 pm EST

I think these songs kick ass and are so much better than the crap that’s out right now. These songs are just demo’s, just imagine what they are going to sound like when the CD’s finally out. GN’R 2007!!!! Whoever wrote this article sucks!

Maggie | 5/11/2007, 1:31 pm EST

I didn’t know Axl had so many haters.

I think whatever you think of him should not influence the way you think of his music.
I like Better and Madagascar the best..

Maggie | 5/11/2007, 1:31 pm EST

Stylez | 5/11/2007, 1:35 pm EST

Another critic who’s bitter because Slash is gone. The 80’s and earlier 90’s are over. The new songs Rock!!!

Axl ROXCHic | 5/11/2007, 5:17 pm EST

Just another Hater who doesnt want to let go of what was. Why does this article even have a picture of Slash? He’s not Guns N’ Roses, anymore. These songs ROCKKK HARD!! they did in the concert, so just imagine when they are complete. AXL really put his all into this….Its gonna kick ass

wildvoodoo | 5/11/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Hey bonedog, or is it corndog? Who says I ain’t got none? …hehehehe… Velvet Revolver are a BAND that rocks harder and I bet their new album will sound betters than this long awaited overworked and overdubbed vanity project. Any anyway its JMHO.

jennifer | 5/11/2007, 7:01 pm EST

i haved loved gnr for more years than i can count. i love velvet and i like the sound of the new gnr. i just wish that the old band would get back together. i know it wont happen but a girl can dream. axl does need to lay off the sergury or he will look like a whiter michael jackson.

P Dog | 5/11/2007, 10:42 pm EST

In my opinion, no matter how good or bad the new album is it will be a let-down. It just took way, way too long to produce. The build up is just too much.

walter | 5/11/2007, 11:47 pm EST

cmon you give that punk wannabe avril a decent review, that drivel is a joke..are you on mtv’s payroll?im sure gnr’s album will be a breath of air from this insane garbage they shove down our throats

greg | 5/12/2007, 12:00 am EST

the leaks are great rock songs

thunderbird | 5/12/2007, 4:06 pm EST

axl needs slash duff and matt back in the band as soon as possible his new band mates do not know how to play there instroments properly and the new songs are bad worse than the spegetti incedent album

thunderbird | 5/12/2007, 4:11 pm EST

axl rose just wants to win a grammy with chiniese democracy so he can try to top his former band mates velvet revolvers contraband

Jon | 5/12/2007, 6:57 pm EST

This whole problem would have never occured if he just released it as a solo project… Axl Rose is big enough name to still get alot of attention if he were to drop it as a solo disc.

Mullethead | 5/12/2007, 7:20 pm EST

Instead of crying about Axl and his band, just go listen to Velvet Revolver and try to convince yourself they’re anything more than a slightly above average rock band. Or that Contraband wasn’t a boring, dated, run of the mill album. Or that Libertad will be any better.

I’m sure it will make you feel better, saying that Slash and Duff were the real masterminds behind Guns N Roses while they continue to crank out some more music that sounds exactly like what it is, aging rock legends trying in vain to emulate their past success

David | 5/17/2007, 12:03 pm EST

I am not a huge Guns fan although I like their music. I think that these leaked songs are good.
Had these songs been released back in the day everyone would be saying how great they are. The whole issue is going to be about Axl waiting so long as opposed to being about the music.

pac man | 5/24/2007, 8:30 am EST

all i know is i just had a wank :)

Thunderbird | 5/27/2007, 3:45 pm EST

I think axl’s songs are great its just that he needs to control his behavior such as not leaving off stage and not walking off stage during a show even without slash duff or matt his new band mates can help him focus more on his music than his behavior i personnaly do not like the way he act i think the late kurt cobain best put it saying his cleshay life is totaly boring to me but overall axl still can make good music but needs to control his lifestyle and consentrate into rebuilding guns n roses but axl rose is still one of the greatest frontman to set foot on the stage

brian | 5/28/2007, 2:11 pm EST

what i think is funny, is that press, and media are just opinion-makers. im sure axl put his heart into this project, and thats all that matters to him. what we say doesnt mean much, except for arguing and debating with one another. if you dont like it than thats fine, but dont fight with others cause they dont feel the way you think they should.

brian | 5/28/2007, 2:11 pm EST

GNR Forever! | 6/1/2007, 5:40 pm EST

GNR rule man!
New tracks rule! – even better when played live!!!!!!!! Who says it’s just AXL? Izzy came onstage on their latest tour n the other guitarists n drummers n keys are brill! But I still think…come on Slash, Duff, Steven and Matt, if Izzy can do it……

harry | 6/5/2007, 8:35 am EST

great news! Chinese Democracy will be available at any CD store or walmart type place on 6/21/07!

Voice Of Reason | 6/7/2007, 10:06 pm EST

Is it true that the bulk of this album has been recorded at the Neverland Ranch? Come Axl, its over man. If you don’t have enough faith in Chinese Democracy to release it after god knows how many years of trying, why should anyone else have faith enough to care?

hoochcliff | 6/12/2007, 1:47 am EST

gnr rule

greg | 6/23/2007, 5:36 pm EST

the old gnr are better but the new are still one of the best bands around they have some great new songs and i cant wait for the new albem to come out

martin | 6/26/2007, 7:03 pm EST

Greg says he “can’t wait for the new album”. Greg you have waited for over 10 years and you will probably wait 10 more because Axl is too scared to release a flop. I’ve been reading some wonderful reviews for the new Velvet Revolver so now Axl will probably have to go in the studio for again for some “final touch ups”. WHATEVER!

biff | 6/29/2007, 9:38 am EST

I like old guns and I don’t like this last album…there isn’t the slash sound

biff | 6/29/2007, 9:38 am EST

I like old guns and I don’t like this last album…there isn’t the slash sound

Logan | 6/29/2007, 9:13 pm EST

Axl Rose is such a prick, seriously he’s turned everyone off from his music just with his attitude. He’s washed up, and he knows it, he just won’t admit it. Plus, the only reason he’s teasing up with ‘Chinese Democracy’ is because he knows that it’s the only thing he has going for him, and if he doesn’t force it down our throats, people will forget about him.

Rob | 7/2/2007, 10:12 pm EST

I think the review is dead on, Not only are the songs lame, but at the end of the day it’s NOT Guns N’ Roses, no matter what crap people wanna force themselves into believing.

And anyone who has actually been waiting around for this myth of an album, seriously needs to get laid.

asr | 7/6/2007, 3:53 pm EST

I was a big GN´R fan, but since they split Axl has done nothing but dream with this long, long, long not awaited album and frankly the few songs i´ve heard really suck. This is not GN´R, this is a has been singer with a bunch of nobodies. I guess Axl deserves this after all the crazy things he did when he was a real rock star.

Russ | 7/10/2007, 6:25 am EST

The new songs are better than anything from the UYI albums, they blew me away. People been reading too many rock magazines that advise you it’s cooler if you say you prefer Slash over Axl these days. So what, Axl split the band up, Slash has moved on, Axl’s moved on, but you guys haven’t..

Oscar | 7/13/2007, 2:05 am EST

I think the leaks are great.I mean, you can’t expect something like old guns n roses, and if you do, you are stuck in the 80’s.
Many critics and old GNR’ fans have written so much shit about the upcoming album, but I really believe that the new album’ll have many potential tracks on it.

Sick | 7/16/2007, 11:49 am EST

Axl has had 15 years to make this record. 15! He has no other job or purpose in life but to do this one thing and he can’t/won’t do it. Pathetic. If he lived in reality where time and deadlines matter he’d be starving on the streets.

CHOPPER | 7/19/2007, 6:57 am EST

DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT G.N.R REALLY STANDS FOR GIRLS NOW ROCK !! NOT ANOTHER BUNCH OF BED WETTERS !!

One kill | 7/19/2007, 7:25 am EST

Guns and Fucking Posers were The most unoriginal Total pile of shit in 1992 and they suck shit out of dead dogs asses in 2007 GNR rock Yeah right! Aluminium Pop Joe dirt Fucking Dickheads

Buzzardo | 7/20/2007, 11:27 am EST

I GOT IT!! Axl is making a statement about the political situation in China!! By never releasing the record, he is, in effect, saying that democracy will never happen in China. It’s a symbolic statement! It’s a protest record without even being real! Wow–he’s so deep…so profound…

Nasty B. | 7/29/2007, 4:27 pm EST

What a crap! Of course you should not expect old GNR style, but this is awful! AXL, isten to LIBERTAD by Velvet Revolver and hear how Scott Weiland sings! Damn, I wish I can hear old GNR songs with Scott singing!

Bohemian | 8/2/2007, 5:21 pm EST

Personally, I’ve always felt SW has usually tried too hard to sound like Jim Morrison, and he was like a poor man’s Eddie Vedder.

Where VR are concerned, they are okay, but nothing spectacular; I think the hype factor has sort of worn off since 2004/2005 for them.

dead smoke | 8/7/2007, 4:06 am EST

listened all you motherfuckers out there …….. just shut the fuck up and see what will happen to guns n roses in 6 months time …… i wont tell you what will happen but just wait and see ….until then just smoke weed and stay high !!!!!!!!

You Know My Name | 8/7/2007, 9:02 am EST

Will you all fucking give Axl a break?

This new record is absolutly amazing!

It’s a shining example of how much Axl has matured as an artist, and how much the new line up can easily give Slash in the bollocks!

Unlike Velvet Revolver songs, this album shows depth in the lyrics that we’ve never seen before, perfected arrangements from numerous acclaimed artists, and, all in all, a perfect Guns N’ Roses record!

I for one am fed up of hearing that the new Guns N’ Roses are “just a cover band”

OBVIOUSLY NOT!

Just you wait to hear the finished product, rather than sum early demos which have been mysteriously dubbed “studio quality tracks”.

jst wait for them 2 properly release the album before slagging it off!

all we need is just a little patience…

Axl Show | 8/14/2007, 3:38 am EST

The album 13 years in the making that will never come out! Release dates come and go always seems something comes up. Why bother touring without a album, just milking the GNR name for some cash!

Want to live like a rockstar put the dam album out already. Not do these”WORLD TOURS” that mean nothing but a quick influx of cash to the Axl Show!

Slash's Nut Hair | 8/15/2007, 7:24 am EST

I am shocked that so many people are hanging onto the idea that Axl has made some masterpiece and it is going to be the greatest album ever. Let go already. Axl isn’t some musical genius who is misunderstood. He’s a complete moron. He let some of the best players in the game go because his ego got to big, period. It’s not Guns ‘N Roses now. It’s Axl with a bunch of hired hands. So Axl here’s to you, dumbass.

JNRGA | 8/18/2007, 10:32 pm EST

GNR kicks ass! it will all end just as the others have. the music will live on forever.

Sean | 8/24/2007, 6:56 pm EST

The songs kick! Axl is amazing! I’ve been waiting since 1998+ when I got the first set of leaks. The new ones (same songs) quality is better. Only do the right and true GNR fans will give back by buying the album. These people leaving negative remarks are here for spite, only. I’ve seen people say, they’re just going to steal the songs they like when it comes out. Some are out of spite, in lieu of Axl, being the only original member. Axl didn’t leave GNR the others did. Quit being selfish, because you want to live their life. You’re all losers and should be kicked in the head. Intelligent people don’t compare unpolished music to past songs done by the band and say they suck, without hearing the finished product. It’s commonsense. You don’t listen to a song one time and love it. Your brain catches on to it, and you know what I mean, even if you are an idiot or you have brain damage.

horsewithnoname | 8/30/2007, 9:03 am EST

the blues is november rain??!??!
WTF Rolling Stone fuck you
the blues is a ballad but’s nothing to do with november rain idiot

johhnysavs | 10/12/2007, 5:59 pm EST

Someone gave me bootleg copy of Chinese Democracy that took me over a month to listen to from lack of interest. A few interesting moments I will admit but Buckcherry sounds more like GnR then this collection does. You know when you put some music on and if it is good you can’t do anything else except sit there and listen to it. The first song “Better” was pretty good but down hill from there – totally couldn’t hold my attention. There were a few bursts of guitar histrionics that I perked up to but nothing compelling and certainly nothing with the hard rocking beauty of Sweet Child or the guttural majesty of Welcome to the Jungle, both rock n roll masterpieces. In my opinion Axl should never release this because he can only lose by doing so. It holds more mystique as an underground myth then it will if he releases it and it gets panned which it will. GnR was a GREAT band and this is NOT GnR no matter what Axl says. Axl had a great weird arrogant pouty charisma in the day but this is stale and proof positive that those accounts of him still being a freaky egomaniac who will always be his own worst enemy have to be true. Te ORIGINAL Axl Rose would never have made Chinses Democracy/ They wouldn’t even have let him in the Kat Club with this music. Too bad. Velvet Revolver rocks though.

Nick | 10/27/2007, 8:37 am EST

Axl

Kick ass

Aragorn | 10/28/2007, 6:12 am EST

I’m sick and tired of reading the comments from you people that just want another “Appetite…”. That was (and still is) a great album but it’s NOT what the next album will (or should) be. Life goes on!

The only thing I REALLY don’t like about “Chinese” is that it’s not yet released…

I’ve heard all the leaks and personally I think they beat the hell out of most of the stuff around today.
Chinese Democracy, There Was A Time, Better and Madagascar are all great songs. The long guitar solo on “There Was..” is just great!

Axl: I think we all have demonstrated a little patience now so just get on with, let us finally have this album and move on to the next! Please.

Leaks | 11/25/2007, 2:57 am EST

Some of you need to get your heads out of the sand. The leaks are better than anything out there right now and they blow way the VR crap. The only so so song is IRS. If you want the classic style gnr go listen to the blues and catcher in the rye.

Different but very good. | 12/6/2007, 1:28 am EST

I’m a little confused by the reviewers comments and those of many leaving comments. Why are we sad that there is no Slash, no drug/alcohol influence, degregation, etc… I absolutly love old GNR. but, you know what… I’m not a middle/high-school kid anymore and, sadly, neither are most of those other people. Don’t Damn Me and Out to Get me still make me want to go punch somebody in the face, but, they aren’t the soundtrack to my life anymore. The new GNR stuff is more significant. It’s all about redempton and moving forward. I never heard the leaks. But, just today I heard studio demos of these for the first time. They seem album ready to me. So, I’ll just assume that the reviewer and others weren’t lucky enough to hear quality mixes. Sorry to rain on the “I hate Axl because he changed but I can’t” parade.

Old Guns Fan | 12/12/2007, 5:05 pm EST

Heard the leaks. Composition and music is amazing. With final mixing and engineering these tracks should sound mind-blowing. They get better the more I listen to them.

Ryan | 12/20/2007, 7:04 am EST

I think that the gunners minus slash are doing a good job I’m listening to them right now keep up the good work Axl

ben | 12/22/2007, 1:45 pm EST

this is why women shouldn’t be let out of the kitchen.

the leaks are awesome and only DEMOS. the final shit will rock your face, hearing these has shattered all the doubt i had about axl and the new lineup.

i must admit i was a hater but seeing them in 2006 and hearing these really changed my mind.

johnbrownstone | 12/31/2007, 9:25 am EST

all u peeps who h8 axl dat doesnt mean the albums gonna be bad just cos u h8 him.i love the old gnr but ive heard the new songs and im able to admit theyre good.and gnr may be dead but this aolbum should bring them alive againn.rockstar70 u mite not like it but that doesnt mean others dont like it.

rebecca lynn | 1/2/2008, 7:57 pm EST

yeah, i heard the leaks. honest, i do think they are great, but just not the same without slash. that new kid just kinda stinks. but they are good songs. i really like IRS and catcher in the rye. they aren’t the same as before, but hay, i’m not the same either. appetite was something i listened to in middle school; when i was stupid. these songs have a different meaning, and they’re more deep than most of GNR’s songs. beside, of course, novemeber rain and don’t cry. not the same, but still good music.

gah, axl was my favourite, but he’s kinda lost the hardcore he used to have. and he’s not near as hott as he used to be. wtf?! “dreads” and plastic surgery? gah, crazy man.

i’m still buying the album the day it’s released! if it’s EVER released, that it…

Dave | 1/12/2008, 7:12 pm EST

Like many people I had written this off before hearing a single note. Im big fan of slash and I was dissapointed with VR, though i still bought it like moron.

But holy shit the second I heard The guitar kick in on the song chineese Democracy I was hooked this is some of the best music ive heard in a long, Thanks todays pussy rock music I forgot what rock actually sounds like.

Major | 1/28/2008, 7:54 am EST

Lets all face the facts the demos arent bad there pretty darn good and we should all get on with our lives whilst waiting for the album

karri | 3/4/2008, 11:53 am EST

The leaks don’t sound as GNR. Axl should have dropped the name.
As Izzy said : “This is obviously not GNR”.

brian | 4/17/2008, 9:45 pm EST

new stuff sounds really great. its important that gnr move forward with new players, able to present axl’s epic songs

Lauz | 4/28/2008, 1:08 am EST

fuk yeah the leaked songs rock

Goliath2k | 7/3/2008, 1:14 pm EST

Ok. yes we all know that isn’t the OLD GnR we all, or most of us grew up with. They split up and formed VR and Axl did what ever he has been doing all these years.

This is a new GnR. same singer, just different musicians. Yes things will not sound the same when it comes to the music. Just like when Motley Crue had a new singer until they realized every one wanted Vince back.

We can not compare new to old as it does not have all the original members, of course it will not sound the same. So anyone expecting the old sound.. It’s not going to happen unless they get back together which will most likely never happen.

So take the time to have an open mind and listen to the new tracks. As if you never heard GnR before and judge from that. Not what you you used to know. What i’ve heard so far, is pretty good.

Luuk | 8/24/2008, 6:33 am EST

You guys keep compare it to the old GNR. Just see it as a new band! I like the songs!

chris | 8/28/2008, 1:08 am EST

I saw GNR live november 13th 2007 in Baltimore and they were fantastic. greatest show I have ever seen. They did IRS and it was fucking awesome and madagascar is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. May not sound like olf gnr but axl still belts his soul into every note and in IRS that one part you know what Im talking about if u heard it he shows he still has it. May not be like old but 10 times better than anything Metalica or poison of even aerosmith has put out in years.

Omar | 8/29/2008, 6:43 am EST

The first leak I heard when things started leaking months ago was “Better” and it took me all of 10 seconds to realize that Axl was back, and with a rightful vengeance. The bashers WANT Axl to fail, and WANT Chinese Democracy to suck, but the fact is that if you can get past the fact that Axl’s not interested in simply grinding out the old sound – then you’ll realize that this material sounds tons better and has more energy in it than just about 99.9% of what’s out there now.

Axl is back, and he rocks.

I WANTED to like the, and TRIED to like the Velevet Revolver material when the others put that together, because, by god – I missed my dose of ANYTHING Gn’R related – but the more I heard, the more I got bored – and I realized (apologies to Slash and Co.) that Axl’s been the creative force behind the brilliance that we’ve grown accustomed to, and that we’ve been hoping to hear once again.

Now I’ve gone through the newly leaked tracks and I have two things to say – all my expectations are being met and mostly exceeded, the man is still both brilliant and heart-wrenchingly honest.

And Axl, if you’re anywhere out there reading this – don’t worry about the leaks, dude – ‘wild horses’ couldn’t keep the real fans from buying this album no matter how much of it has been leaked.

Thanks.

Pepe | 8/31/2008, 6:11 am EST

Tbh, I actually quite like some of the tracks (TWAT, Better, Madagascar) and some of them I’m really not too fussed about.
The thing about Axl and the others is they need each other to really bring the best out of each other. And to really really work they need Izzy. He was the most underated member of GNR by a distance. He had the songwriting knack and his rythm guitar was an overlooked cornerstone of GnR

Sunstreaked | 9/1/2008, 1:57 am EST

Music is subjective. Those who are GnR fans will LOVE Chinese Democracy and hail the conquering hero in Axl Rose. The rest of the world will need to have explained to them why there are a few people running around with their pants wet from excitement. Axl who?

monkeyboy | 9/1/2008, 5:28 am EST

Listened to all 9 songs and….meh?
A couple are good, but if this is the best he has after 13(?) years. Some songs are just plain terrible. I love gnr but this is a pale imitation to what the band used to be.

mike_b_nz | 10/17/2008, 6:33 am EST

attention all muppets and tools!! do not judge any album until you have listened to each track 3 times or more.

this album is fantastic.

axl is back !!

Dave | 10/29/2008, 3:54 am EST

You can expect another ” Appetite for Destruction ” again coz Axl has done that masterpiece in the 80’s..Now its another masterpiece in the making of today’s heavy rcok sound put together…Well done Axl..you’re a genius..You’re lyrics says it all!

Dave | 10/29/2008, 3:55 am EST

GnR Sweden | 10/29/2008, 7:59 pm EST

I also had a bad thougt about the album, like many others i Thought GnR was dead.. But when the guitarr kicks in Chinese Democracy i was completely blowed away!
The new songs realy rock, its like rock n roll V 2.0!

The sad thing is, nomather how good the album is, its gonna get shitty reviews..
Hope all gunners out there will buy the album!

PS. Anyoune who´ve heard something about a possible outdoor-tour next summer? Its time!

Stephen Dale | 11/3/2008, 3:56 pm EST

The great news here is a hand full of good to great songs. The bad news? One would think that over 14 years a lot hit the cutting room floor. The work as a whole is uneven and to often overcooked.

Had axl come out of nowhere and dropped this on us in 2003 (minus the excess) I think it would be a major statement. As a master work?

Genius is a subtle art and a far more prolific one.

DG | 11/4/2008, 4:34 am EST

I can’t believe the reviews on the net. Most of them are reviews of the leaks. The complete album has 14 songs on it. The complete versions of prostitute, scraped, This I love and Sorry are only available if you really know how to get ‘m. Most of the people don’t !! The final versions of T.W.A.T, I.R.S, Better, Streets of dreams, If the World, Rhiad and Bedouins, Chinese democracy, Madagascar and Shackler’s revenge blow the leaks away on so many levels. This is not 80’s rock, this doesn’t sound like the old guns but hey so what? The music is great and if people bash this album than they have either no taste or bash for the purpose of bashing. From RS I would ‘ve expected something better. You are an absolute disgrace as a reviewer. Hope your ass gets fired and someone competent writes a review. I don’t mind a bad review but know your goddamned stuff. Don’t review a leak, review the final version. Don’t review a view songs, review an album. Show some insight. If you can’t than F off

JC POWER | 11/4/2008, 1:32 pm EST

GNR had a great album at a time when the music scene needed desperate releif from LA hair bands. It was a kick ass classic but the band quickly succumbed to self importance with a string of over blown anthems and bad covers by greater artists.

Anyone who needs this much time to paw over a Rock album is trying very hard to manufacture genius. It doesn’t make them one. Sorry.

The Beatles recorded the (double) White Album in 5 months. Pink Floyd did Dark Side of the Moon in six. Just a couple of examples people.

This should be the greatest record ever made when it comes out. But we have already heard enough to know it certainly will not be. Why would it? Axl is a relative light weight in a Rock n Roll historial sense. For GNR junkies, enjoy it. He’s every bit as relavant now as he ever was.

DG | 11/5/2008, 4:26 am EST

And again the argument of the timeframe. Just because the album is 17 years in the making it must be a masterpiece? I don’t get it. Let’s, for arguments sake, say the album dropped in 1995/1996 with the same songs on it. Would you then have been blown away or not? Why does an album have to be a masterpiece when it takes a long time to put out? I remember a few years back an album of that beachboy guy dropped. It took like 30 years and got rave reviews. What’s the difference. I always thought music is about music. Wow maybe times do change Just listen to the album, listen to the songs and decide if they rock, kick ass or don’t. The persona of axl rose, the reclusive lifestyle, the millions of dollars spent and the timeframe of 17 years should not matter. The different band, that there is no slash blablabla should not matter. Judge it by it’s content. I haven’t read a single review that explains why this album / leaked songs suck? It’s the same over and over again. Axl is an asshole, 17 years is too long, it should be a masterpiece, the new sound sucks because it doesn’t sound like GN’R. F off with this shit. I’m getting sick of it. Musically this album is one of the best things that has dropped in years. Has it been too long? YES, Is axl an asshole? Who knows, Is this GN’R? It’s named GN’R so appaaerently it is. Does all of this matter, OH HELL NO !!! Still waiting on some insight here, still waiting for someone who makes sense in this F-ed up world where little things seem to matter more than what it is all about.

And about being relevant and doing “bad covers” Having probably the no1 song of all -time with november rain and one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time in sweet child of mine makes you very VERY relevant. Are they an inspiration like Led Zeppelin / Deep Purple / The stones etc. were? Probably not but that has more to do with the time we’re living in. In de 70’s and 80’s you could be relevant very easy. There was lots of unexplored teritory. Nowadays that’s a lot harder to do. The covers of Guns, where they be tribute to other artists, are some of the best ever. Listen to mama kin, knocking on heavens door, live and let die and sympathy for the devil. The beatles, aerosmith, dylan and the stones should be proud! Me as not that big a GNR fan can honostly say that chinese democracy is not for all but musically it’s a great GREAT statement. Maybe even a masterpiece but we’ll know that within the next few years

Essdy | 11/11/2008, 11:50 am EST

Right. Ok. November Rain. A candidate for the number one song of all time.

Try one of the better hard rock / metal ballads of the (gotta have one on my album cause it’s what we all do in this genre) 1980’s. Ya i’d agree with that.

I’m suddenly reminded of how necessary the Seattle scene was.

Not that good. | 11/12/2008, 10:17 pm EST

No i don’t “want” Chinese Democracy to suck or fail or anything, and even though I hear how Axl is a douche, I don’t hold anything against him. I don’t care about Slash and Velvet Revolver either.

But seriously it’s not that good. The guitarist is from Nine Inch Nails so there is a lot of that in there. Then the title track has some cool riffs because of Buckethead. But seriously it sucks overall. Axl’s vocals are so monotnous it’s beyond me how anyone who listens to Apetite For Destruction can think Axl’s vocala are good on this. The beats are all computerized and gay, plus the lyrics just plain suck.

Title track? only good thing is the riffs.

Shackler’s Revenge – Some of it is catchy, but computerized beats, shit vocals, and NIN/Korn like riffs.

The Blues is just a watered down version of November Rain, and Madagascar is a dumbed down version of Civil War.

In all it sucks. They did not evolve, they in fact did the exact opposite and are relying on dumbing down other works

R.H.D | 11/26/2008, 10:51 am EST

This album had so much potential to be better than it is. But frankly, for the most it’s badly done. The idea is there but they failed to deliver.

The song writing is pretty monophonic and awful. Lots of lifeless guitar work on this album! Axls voice still sounds good but the lyrics are pretty crap for his standards. The only thing this album has got going for it is good production. Some nice computer beats, bass drops, samples, guitar fxs and synth work. So if you’re into that kind of thing it’s great! But this is only to try and fill the lack of interesting melodies and rhythms musically.

I’m very disappointed. It isn’t Axls fault the music is bad. It’s the muscicians he’s working with. It sounds like a random collaboration of guys trying to make music, instead of a collaboration of friends making muisc. Which is why people like the old line up, and which is why the old music was so good. They all complimented each others ability well. If the magic was there between the new line up this album could have really rocked. It seems like Axl has big ideas but finding hard to get the right guys to create his vision. Which is why I don’t like this album.

Best song on the album is Better but thats even rewind by the terrible lead guitar work.

Damien 6 | 3/5/2009, 12:12 pm EST

So many fuckheads. Nothing to say, no idea at all about what they’re talking about. “Chinese Democracy” sounding like Nine Inch Nails because of Finck? Finck never wrote a single song in NIN you retard, and as a matter of fact never played so good than within his time in Guns. If you take it from where the band left it, “Use Your Illusion”, it’s a pretty obvious thing not to expect another fucking “Apetite”. I think the lyrics are fucking great, like in all Gn’R works. Forced? I saw them live in Paris 2006 and it was far from being a forced band. Some people just can’t get over the line up thing I guess, so no matter what would come out of the studio, they were just waiting to bash it to the ground.

alex | 5/2/2009, 9:44 pm EST

I think people like a band for the music and out of loyalty. Most people that liked GN’R’s music have moved on. Most of the ones that remain like CD out of loyalty. I am of the ones that remain and hate this album. I wish I could be like the majority that moved on, and forgot about GN’R. Sad. Sad. Sad.
