This past weekend in New York I spent a splendid afternoon with the Howling Bells, a young Aussie four-piece we marked for greatness after hearing their melancholic yet uplifting single, “Low Happening.” Their sound is an amalgamation of romantic country and American gothic-pop, like a Carson McCullers’ short story starring Hope Sandoval. The band — Brendan Picchio (bass guitar), Glenn Moule (drums) and siblings Juanita (vocals, guitar) Stein and Joel (guitar) Stein — who are originally from New South Wales and currently live on their bus, just wrapped up a three-week tour of the U.S. supporting the Killers. In exchange for checking out their coffin-like bus bunks and raiding the contents of the mini-fridge, I took them thrift shopping and, like true gypsies, they cleaned out my wallet.

That video was great! I’ve seen them play a few times, love their music. on stage they seem too cool for school so it was interesting to see how they speak and act normally. Brendan is a cutie. Juanita has adopted a britishy accent, kinda reminded me of Kelly Osborne, esp. when she swore!
