First Listen: Beastie Boys’ New Instrumental Album Makes Us Think Of Outer Space

5/4/07, 4:51 pm EST

Beastie Boys

We just got our hands on the new instrumental Beastie Boys record, The Mix Up. Our first impression: Manage your expectations. This is a small album that will please anybody who was a fan of the Beasties’ 1996 instrumental comp The In Sound From Way Out. There’s lots of Money Mark keyboard, and some of the grooves are more interesting that those on In Sound, but the guys haven’t made too many tweaks to their Meters-inspired formula. “14th St. Break,” with its quirky building synth swell and relentless guitars would work well in a film noir slow motion chase scene, while the up-tempo groove of “Off the Grid” seems like the perfect soundtrack for space jogging.

Don’t label people. Everyone is an individual and has thier own opinion….and it’s just not cool to bring racism here. It is ugly and we are mos def not digging it!

I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatos.

Jimmy | 5/10/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I stay up all night. I go to sleep watchin’ dragnet. I never sleep alone, cuz Jimmy is the magnet. I’m so rope, they call me Mr. Roper. When the troubles arise, you know I’m the cool coper.

/I love TISFTWO
//Do you hear the dial tone? That is because this album is gonna be off hook

Pauls Boutique is one of the most inovative albums ever made imo. That album could not be made today with it costing hundreds of millions of dollars for all the samples that are on it.

Newsflash: they are hugely popular and legendary, and have made better rap albums than most of the rest of the genre. They also started as a punk band. Only stupid people make race an issue.

shelley | 5/7/2007, 3:07 pm EST

will ur obviously an idiot
the beasties were the first rap group to have a rap album place at number one at the charts n they never tried to be black they just wanted to rap they understand that part of what they do is so unbelievable its funny but they are def hugely influntial groups ever
n they know zep rocks so they cant be that lame

Cartman | 5/7/2007, 2:31 pm EST

I’m with you Will. Wiggers piss me off.

Intelligencia | 5/7/2007, 10:00 am EST

Will,
and…you listen to Snow and Vanilla Ice and think they are authentic.

abandonedstation | 5/7/2007, 9:53 am EST

some of the best bits of ‘ill communication’ and ‘hello nasty’ were the instrumentals.
if RS is saying not much has changed with this album, i’m not complaining…

tazer | 5/7/2007, 8:49 am EST

i heard some lame ass DJ on 94 WYSP in philly yesterday say the boys were coming out with an album and “actually playing their own instruments”. how do you get to be a DJ and have never heard of TISFWO? great album.

anyway, doesn’t sound like this reviewer is a fan, so i don’t trust his opinion of the new stuff either.

laroo | 5/6/2007, 9:19 pm EST

will,
ur an idiot

Willers | 5/5/2007, 11:03 pm EST

“In Sound” is still in my collection - great funk beats, great to drive with - this will be a cool addition (though I’d love another “traditional” album)

blindman a.d. | 5/5/2007, 2:41 pm EST

hope this album rocks! i just want to know exactly what ‘prejudices’ will is purportedly expressing? I wouldn’t mind if someone referred to me as a wigger. by the way, words only hold as much meaning as you want them to! if you feel like being offended, then surely you will no matter what.

Check out ol’ greybeard in the photo above! Yeah, these guys are getting up there but they still manage to make decent sounds. I was disappointed when I heard this was another instrumental record but oh well. At least there wasn’t a 7-8 year wait. (sorry for the lack of negative and/or derogatory comments. there’s just no point)

Mikey T | 5/5/2007, 7:32 am EST

Beastie Boys…. one of the most innovative groups from New York ever.

MusicalJenius | 5/5/2007, 4:00 am EST

I never cared for them really, with the exception of Paul’s Boutique. I’m sure this new thing will make little to no waves similiarly although more so (less so?) than The Five Boroughs.

McPappy | 5/5/2007, 12:36 am EST

From Paul Revere bumpin through my candyass H.S. speakers…to right now the Beasties have been where its at. Will, my son - it’s a lame sport to drag your prejudices into music, you sound like a hater, cut it out.

lik roper | 5/4/2007, 11:03 pm EST

i’ve heard from DJs that the beasties are equally or more dope than anything out there when it comes to getting the floor jumping…

Mike | 5/4/2007, 9:49 pm EST

Using the ‘W’ word is just like using the ‘N’ word. You’re implying it and we’re not digging it. You’re overrated, btw.

slackcash | 5/4/2007, 9:23 pm EST

A yEs yEs yall, beastie boys are the best yall, f*@$ will f!^& mr negative

Nice | 5/4/2007, 7:26 pm EST

Mr. Negative | 5/4/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Yeah, Will. That’s what they are. Good call, numbnuts.

Anonymous | 5/4/2007, 6:40 pm EST

no! they are OK.

will | 5/4/2007, 5:09 pm EST
