Borat To Play Freddie Mercury, McCartney Recruits Portman, Busta Better Armed Than Our Troops

5/4/07, 9:19 am EST

Borat

  • So, it looks like none other than Sacha Baron Cohen will be playing Freddie Mercury in the forthcoming Queen biopic. “Sacha loves the idea he can get away with playing Freddie after modeling Borat’s look on him,” said a source close to the project.
  • First Dylan recruited Scarlett Johannson for his sensuous video for “When The Deal Goes Down,” now Paul McCartney has scored his own It-girl young actress for his new video. Natalie Portman will apparently star in the video for “Dancing Tonight,” McCartney’s first single off his new album Memory Almost Full.
  • Nas cancelled the San Diego stop on his current tour after he and Kelis encountered what he called “racist” employees at the House of Blues. “We came to the club, all excited,” Nas said. “[We] go to the venue and they ain’t let me in. I was outside with my wife and they treated us like terrorists. It was a little racist and we just don’t tolerate that. I just want everybody to know, don’t tolerate any form of racism.”
  • Eve will be brought up on charges today stemming from her drunk driving accident last week in L.A.
  • In other arrest-related news, Busta was apparently driving a $225,000 armored SUV when he was pulled over yesterday for having overly tinted windows, then arrested because police smelled alcohol on his breath. He’s due back in court next week to deal with the charges.

Sophie | 5/19/2007, 5:26 pm EST

there’s an argentine named Pablo Padin.. he is the greatest imitator of freddie, he looks and poses like freddie.. he is tha man.. producers should consider him

shantanu | 5/13/2007, 8:10 pm EST

Freddie was a phenomenon but Sacha is no less ,If we can just try to see sacha and not Borat I am very sure we will see an afadorable work..sacha is the man

QueenMercury46 | 5/13/2007, 4:15 pm EST

Johnny Depp needs to play Freddie Mercury. If you look at Edward Scissorhands, and then look at Freddie in the video for “I’m Going Slightly Mad”, it’s pretty identical. Plus, I wouldn’t be able to take the character seriously if Sacha played it. I would only be thinking of Borat, not Freddie Mercury. I don’t think he even looks like him. And remember, Freddie didn’t even always have the mustache and short hair. In his early days he had the long hair and the leotards. I can’t see Sacha pulling that off. Just because he has brown eyes and a mustache doesn’t mean he looks like Freddie Mercury.

comment on borat not playing | 5/7/2007, 2:08 pm EST

Freddy. RS is a bunch of liars! gossiping and telling tales out of school.

Steve | 5/7/2007, 10:38 am EST

I almost think like the anger about Sacha playing Freddie is a tribute to Sacha’s acting ability. People actually think Sacha is Borat and they’re getting upset that Borat will play Freddie Mercury.

TheLawyer | 5/7/2007, 10:22 am EST

We should start calling Busta “Busted” Rhymes.

NATAS | 5/7/2007, 9:53 am EST

Cohen is a very good actor he will play Freddy pretty well.

Dean | 5/7/2007, 9:28 am EST

All the buzz that Sacha Baron Cohen has created with his Borat character and he can’t be taken seriously? Most of the public appearances that he has made, have been in character. We don’t know what Sacha is really like. We don’t know all that he is capable of.

I know that it was a comedian playing another comedian, but look at Jim Carrey. Ace Ventura, Lloyd Christmas… the guy played some goofy characters. Then, he took on the role of playing Andy Kaufman and let me tell ya… that entire movie, I felt like I was watching Kaufman, not Carrey.

Give Cohen a chance.

Yeesh... | 5/7/2007, 8:55 am EST

Does it ever occur to anyone that maybe we’re reading WAY too into movies?

I mean, who cares if Cohen is going to play Freddie Mercury? Give him a chance to try it out, and THEN judge his performance.

Freddie was great and all, but Cohen doesn’t have to eat like him, sing like him or %^&$ like him. He only has to act like him, on-screen, and that’s his job. Any singing will be overdubbed, like in any movie, and he’ll have plenty of references and info to get into the character while filming.

The Pied Cypher | 5/6/2007, 6:14 pm EST

Talents aside - Freddy wasn’t traditionally attractive .. But damn he was SLEEK!

ONLY 3 THINGS - GUITARS, CORVETTES, and FRICKIN” FREDDY MERCURY, could possibly be so Masculine -and- Feminine at the same time.

IN YOUR FACE, SLICK-ANGST SWAGGER

Nothing personal Sacha you’re a bit of a gump compared to Mr. Mercury (Anyone is)
Pull this off and “I’ll be singing” you praise for years to come.
Good Luck.

The Pied Cypher

Ssandles | 5/6/2007, 10:08 am EST

what? wow! why?

TJ | 5/6/2007, 12:36 am EST

Sascha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury is probably one of the worst casting choices I’ve ever heard.

While Cohen has the look, he does not have the flair, the style or even a hint of singing training.

I wouldn’t even consider Depp.

Hell, no one can pull off Freddie Mercury as well as Freddie Mercury can.

So, no.

Carla | 5/5/2007, 11:10 pm EST

I’ve just read that Borat will NOT be playing the role of Freddie Mercury…thank you thank you thank you. Sascha is way to tall. I hope like mad that Depp does get it. He is such a talented actor and I would really love to see him as Mr. Mercury.

Steviefan | 5/5/2007, 9:36 pm EST

I’m more worried about the possibility of Lindsey Lohan playing Stevie Nicks. That one scares the **** out of me.

Martin | 5/5/2007, 6:40 pm EST

Johhny Depp was another contender for the Queen biopic, but surviving Queen band-members apparently warmed to Sacha because of his pyshical similarities to Freddie.

Borat is not the be-all & end-all of Sacha’s talents: he has a great sense of timing and comedic situations (similar to Aussie Barry Humphries). For all those who say he can’t act: he’s a comedic actor for chrissakes - his characters are all acted - that’s his trade !

Keep an open mind and remember what the nay-sayers said about Daniel Craig portraying James Bond. If Sacha treats the material with respect and works hard, they’ll pull it off.

frank | 5/5/2007, 2:20 pm EST

sacha baron cohen as freddie mercury… i dont think he has the charisma and poise freddie had, but i’m gonna wait and see before i say anything. he’ll have to be one hell of an actor though!

Ryan McCarthy | 5/5/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Nothing like bitching about a movie and saying how bad its “going” to be when the movie hasnt even been made. You have no idea, so go do something better with your time and spare everyone the stories about your unlce with a moustache.

john g | 5/5/2007, 12:18 pm EST

Borat, the movie, was absolutely insulting to everyone, including its audience. It may have attempted a sort of cynical social revision, to shake up familiar mind sets, but it was cruel and tasteless, ideas that have never occurred to me while watching Queen, although, let’s face it, the challenge of social convention was there too, but with art, music and sexuality, not with a miserable cynicism that simply degrades all, including itself. The characters may look similar, but they are not.

MusicalJenius | 5/5/2007, 4:14 am EST

[Nas] Wow, great! Another person reasoning like Al Sharpton! “Racist! Racist! Racist!” Well, here’s my experience with racism guys: I was in the supermarket the other day and the black guy before me shared a comment and a laugh with the black cashier, it made me smile and gave me a sense of community. Unfortunately when I got up to the register the young man didn’t talk to me… I realized then that he was a racist and he hated me cause of my white skin… But I didnt talk to him either and I realized then that I must be racist too. I killed myself. Some one give Imus his check.

rockscar | 5/5/2007, 2:40 am EST

Borat and Freddie…both douches. Perfect!

k-bones(a7xrox) | 5/5/2007, 12:44 am EST

borat!?…(cool it,control your temper self) whew!

SURLEY | 5/4/2007, 11:56 pm EST

ALL THIS SHIT ABOUT RESPECTING A ROCK ICON .the man wore white leotards with a banana in the crotch for the ’shear heart attack’ tour. How could Sasha do anything as stupid as that?

Landwashburn | 5/4/2007, 9:00 pm EST

He has standed the test of time.” Nice one Emily, you retard.

GC | 5/4/2007, 7:50 pm EST

as a HUGE queen fan, i am appalled that sacha cohen will play him in a movie. although they’re both british….anyway- freddie was absolutely gorgous. he was so beutiful…..need i say more? yes. sacha doesn’t compare–so what they both had mustaches and brown eyes. so does my uncle- but he doesn’t look like freddie mercury

i must be blind | 5/4/2007, 6:44 pm EST

how did i not notice the similarities! With a bit of a tan, I’d think they looked identical.

Wow.

Montana Wildhack | 5/4/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Why not wait for the movie before whining about it? Dumbasses.

G Dawg | 5/4/2007, 6:30 pm EST

i don’t like sacha baron cohen and i absolutely love freddie mercury. i agree with the muffin man, he’d be better off portraying Frank Zappa… maybe.

Steve | 5/4/2007, 6:26 pm EST

I think Sacha can pull it off. A lot of his work has been genius. I think we’ll get to see that Sacha is more than a comedian. He’s a man with depth and things to say. He’s already shown that to a lot of us, but this will show it to the public at large who can’t appreciate the depth of Borat.

tard | 5/4/2007, 6:20 pm EST

Bad idea, no one will be able to watch him without thinking of Borat. Should of chosen someone else.

somebody | 5/4/2007, 6:19 pm EST

Oh no, Sacha will ruin the whole movie! Just because he looks like Freddie Mercury doesn’t mean he should actually play him. Talk about disrespecting a rock icon. Yikes.

Admit I | 5/4/2007, 6:16 pm EST

Awesome choice!!!

Emily | 5/4/2007, 6:11 pm EST

Freddie Mercury is one of the most influential and amazing musicians ever. He has standed the test of time only to have his character played by an actor that is hard to take seriously. It is only appropriate that he be played by an actor that is respected, amazing actor who can depict what he was really like. I feel like they picked based on looks rather than talent.

effbird | 5/4/2007, 5:15 pm EST

I think you’ll be surprised.

Space Pen | 5/4/2007, 4:32 pm EST

the first time i saw borat, i thought he was a freddie mercury impersonator. GET IT SACHA!

Jessica | 5/4/2007, 4:28 pm EST

Sascha as THE Freddy Mercury…is this some late April fools joke? I don’t think I could take the movie seriously with Borat in it.

the muffin man | 5/4/2007, 12:42 pm EST

i think sacha would be better playing zappa actually

Betty | 5/4/2007, 11:37 am EST

Weirdos

Jordan | 5/4/2007, 10:04 am EST

How is he going to be playing Freddie?! He’s going to look like Borat the entire movie, that’ll be a distraction.
