Dylan Goes to Kindergarten

5/3/07, 1:31 pm EST

DylanWe used to waste hours fantasizing about being born in the early part of last century. We could have been a teenager in the ’20s and moved to Hollywood in the ’30s where we would have tended to our own orange grove in between managing a flourishing career as a femme fatale/major studio boss. But now we’re realizing the best time to be born would have been about five years ago in Calabasas, California. That way we could be in Jakob Dylan’s kid’s Kindergarten class where Dylan doing “Wheels On the Bus” covers would regularly serenade us. The New York Post reports that children in Dylan’s grandson’s class have been coming home to their parents and talking about the “weird man” who keeps coming to their class to sing “scary” songs on his guitar (perhaps he should lay off the “Masters of War”-ish dark stuff).

You are writing Dylan’s next Kindergarten class set list. What songs do you have him play for the kiddies?

I would like to see Dylan put a spin on the classic Peanut Butter and Jelly by Sharon, Lois and Bram

As ususal the New York post gets it wrong- Dylan is actually in Euprope and has been for the last couple months

Donald | 5/3/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Yeah, maybe an audience of 4 year olds isn’t the best place to play “Tombstone Blues”.

God Gave Names To All The Animals might be cool…

Hulka | 5/3/2007, 7:02 pm EST

“Rainy Day Women #12 and #35.” Duh.

Big Roy of The Twigs | 5/3/2007, 8:01 pm EST

Given that Dylan is on tour in Europe, should we start worrying about who the weird guitar guy visiting the kids really is?

asheezy | 5/4/2007, 4:09 pm EST

How about Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land?” That would be awesome.

bets | 5/4/2007, 6:24 pm EST

About 15 years ago I used to lead the little kid’s song service at church with my guitar. Those kids absolutely LOVED Dylan’s “Man Gave Names to all the Animals”. I betcha he’s already played this one for them.

Huck’s Tune

JohnC | 5/11/2007, 1:33 am EST

My 1989/1991 progeny really loved ‘Wiggle wiggle’ from a very young age. ‘Cat’s in the well’ went down very nicely too.

It’s got to be Wiggle Wiggle from ‘Under the Red Sky’!

Daan | 5/11/2007, 6:30 am EST

He should paint his face and play Jokerman!

matt | 5/11/2007, 7:57 am EST

I’d like to see him do ‘Foot of Pride’ for the kiddies. Then do a follow up study 30 years later to see how many ended up in therapy.

Mrs. Bob Dylan | 5/11/2007, 8:14 am EST

Teach the kiddies a good lesson, sing ‘em Gotta Serve Somebody and A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall!!

Toni | 5/11/2007, 9:34 am EST

I’m pretty sure he played “Rainy Day women # 12 & 35″ and “Death is not the end”

TelltheTruth | 5/11/2007, 9:36 am EST

The NY Post failed to report that Dylan was in Europe, on tour, when he was supposed to be at Jakob’s son’s kindergarten class…

c’mon now, Page 6. Tell the truth…

burgess | 5/11/2007, 10:36 am EST

the real question is does he face his class or stare off to his right and not look at the audience?

Frank Morgan | 5/11/2007, 10:39 am EST

Bob did a wonderful version of Knick Knack Paddywack on a children’s compilation album. I’ve been looking for a copy for years.

Rock Turtleneck | 5/11/2007, 11:09 am EST

It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) seems like a natural choice.

teacher | 5/11/2007, 11:25 am EST

Blowin’ in the WInd
God Gave Names to All the Animals
Subterranean Homesick Blues
You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere
Everything Is Broken

Bevern | 5/11/2007, 12:36 pm EST

Howcome everyone thinks God gave name to all the animals? The thought seems a bit absurd to me – the idea of a God creating animals less so.

Anyway, Bob Dylan once recorded a wonderful tune called “Man gave name to all the animals”. Check it out! :)

carlos | 5/11/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Some yet to mentioned songs are “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” and “Country Pie”. My young ones liked “Subteranean Homesick Blues”.

Pia M | 5/11/2007, 1:34 pm EST

Toe knee chest nut knows I love you
Toe knees nose
Toe knees nose

Johnny | 5/11/2007, 2:40 pm EST

I’d have to say Cold Iron Bounds. The opening “I’m beginning to hear voices!” would be a moment to cherish in the children’s faces.

The years of therapy with your child after that moment wouldn’t be as good but I’d say it’d be worth it.

Alias | 5/11/2007, 2:52 pm EST

You’re all wrong, the best song would be “Idiot Wind”!

I am bob dylan | 5/11/2007, 4:12 pm EST

hello folks,
FYI, I charged the kids.

Chloe Cat | 5/11/2007, 9:09 pm EST

“Hurricane”! C’mon kids, sing along! You know all the words!

thisyoungman | 5/12/2007, 2:39 am EST

If you want ‘em in therapy, I propose
NOT DARK YET

Meow | 5/12/2007, 10:18 am EST

Heh, he should sing his story songs like High Water(for Charley Patton), The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, or the Ballad of Hollis Brown!

I bet Kindergarden kids love stories about fictional people!

Stacy Rae | 5/12/2007, 11:09 pm EST

I do have a kid in kindergarten and he loves Lily, Rosemary & theh Jack of Hearts and his seven year old brother’s absolute fav is Sarah.

Galway Jokerman | 5/14/2007, 8:36 am EST

I think he would have played
Under The Red Sky
Forever Young
Man Gave Names To All The Animals
This Old Man
Licence To Kill
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
Dead Man Dead Man
Tomestone Blues

MyTwoYearOldSon'sNameIsDylan | 5/16/2007, 4:19 pm EST

If His Bobness REALLY wanted to come back from his European tour to give the kids something to keep ‘em up at night and in therapy until they’re 60-something, I think D. would have a singalong featuring “Seven Curses”, “Walls of Red Wing”, “Man in the Long Black Coat”, “Joey” followed by the “Oh Mercy” discard, “Series of Dreams”…then, after being called back for an encore, he’d lighten the mood up a bit with “Under the Red Sky”.

outfidel | 5/24/2007, 2:28 pm EST

how about fixin to die and see that my grave is kept clean

Hellenback | 6/15/2007, 6:25 pm EST

Dylan has made my world an easier place to live in for over 40 years and I’m only 52! Rainy Day Women hit me when I was twelve. Kids are growing up earlier these days so I’m sure any kindergartener would be enthralled by Mr. Dylan!

Hellenback | 6/15/2007, 6:26 pm EST

If he has ever played for his sons classmates I’m sure they had a blast!

Lord Protect My Child | 7/14/2007, 1:47 pm EST

Dylan would sing-
Talkin’ Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues
Motorpsycho Nitemare,
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,
Gotta Serve Somebody
love sick
Ballad of a Thin Man

Then i would sing-
Lord Protect My Child

I LOVE Bobby Dylan | 9/14/2007, 3:31 am EST

hahah aww Bobby went to his grandson’s kindergarden class and sang Wheel’s on the Bus!!!
He probably played Highway 61 Revisited, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Blowin in the Wind, Maggie’s farm, Mr. Tambourine Man….

SteelyJames | 1/2/2008, 10:27 pm EST

he should do Mr. Bojangles from the ORIGINAL “Dylan” album.
