Artist To Watch: Black Moth Super Rainbow

5/3/07, 3:32 pm EST

THE FORMULA: AIR + GRATEFUL DEAD + THE CIA
“I’ve never paid much attention to the music scene here,” says Black Moth Super Rainbow’s frontman Tobacco about nightlife in his hometown of Pittsburgh. “It’s the opposite of a scene. People don’t want other bands to get out of the city. They just want them to stay stuck, unhappy, in Pittsburgh.” So when it came time for the psych-electronica group to record their latest disc, Dandelion Gum, the five pseudonymed members (Tobacco, bassist Power Pill Fist, keyboardist Seven Fields of Aphelion, drummer Iffernaut and keyboardist Father Hummingbird) made sure to beat a path out of the metropolis, heading north to a cabin in the Pennsylvania woods. They emerged with a concept album based on a local myth about two candy-wielding witches who lure kids to an uncertain doom. “It’s probably just a tale invented by Father Hummingbird’s grandparents,” says Tobacco, 27. “I don’t know if they created it to scare him, but we would talk about it when we were out there at night.” (more . . . )

FAIR TO MIDLAND

Congrats to Black Moth for their success, but must they be yet another band that rips their hometown upon the slightest bit of recognition? My point transcends Pittsburgh and this band. Universally, slamming the town you’re from reeks of classlessness and hurts fellow musicians aching for a break. If the town holds local bands down so much, why contribute to the restraint by denigrating the entire music scene? Unless of course, BMSR stands as the only band to escape the prison of Steel Town thanks to their exemplary talent and perserverance. Unlikely.

If you’re interested in BMSR, get Start a People. Oh, and BMSR’s contribution to the House of Apples and Eyeballs was wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than Octopus. I can’t listen to the Oct tracks, but love the ones from BMSR.

Black Moth is definitely the best band out there right now. i can’t believe you guys are paying enough attention to cover them! i saw them live at sxsw - hands down, best show of the festival. i highly recommend seeing them live.

The Octopus Project’s contributions to that ep are much better. You should do a profile on them.

Listen you jerk, all my friends at RS are busy thinking of ways they can save Mother Earth from us vile creatures, intent on melting her. Some ideas:
Ride your 15 speed (with your sandals on of course)
Don’t pass gas
Don’t use toilet paper
