Lunchtime Poll: You Say Who Goes Solo

5/1/07, 11:37 am EST

Pete Doherty

Today we learned that Pete Doherty has completed an acoustic solo album. We know many of you are extremely stoked to get a load of Pete unplugged, but you’ll have to wait until after the guy finishes writing and recording the new Babyshambles album, as the label is insisting it come out first. Anyway. In the meantime we were thinking it might be fun to have some other alleged voice of his/her generation go all contemplative side project on us and release his/her own solo record. You are in charge of orchestrating this. Which rocker, who is currently, definitively part of a group, would you like to see take five to record an acoustic solo album?

Julian Casablancas gets a divorce and a heroin addiction, then successfully completes rehab and puts together an album from the notes he took during the whole escapade.

Nello | 5/1/2007, 4:37 pm EST

J | 5/1/2007, 7:04 pm EST

John Stirratt of Wilco and The Autumn Defense. He has a great voice, and I’d like to hear what he can do on his own.

appaljack | 5/1/2007, 7:19 pm EST

A full solo album by Noel Gallagher. And screw eddie vedder. I want some solo Stone Gossard or Mike McCready.

Gingerfoot | 5/1/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Richard Manuel. It’s a damn shame he never got the chance to record a solo record.

cheesecrop | 5/1/2007, 9:15 pm EST

Have to agree w/ appeljack. I think Vedder’s actually just fine, but I’d rather hear Gossard, Ament, McCready, or Cameron doing a solo project before Eddie.

Ploo | 5/1/2007, 9:24 pm EST

Issack Brock
Jack White

josie | 5/1/2007, 9:28 pm EST

Keith Richards. His acoustic playing on songs like Prodigal Son,Factory Girl and Love in Vain is magic.

tom | 5/2/2007, 1:27 am EST

K-Feds bass player

BUTCH | 5/2/2007, 1:38 am EST

Noel Gallagher

Wayne Coyne!! | 5/2/2007, 5:49 am EST

great call on wayne coyne. The guy is a genius who for the most part goes unnoticed. The FLaming Lips rock…can’t wait for Christmas on Mars and the UFOs in the Zoo DVD…and to see them at Bonaroo with the White Stripes.

Dmouth | 5/2/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Eddie Vedder will not go solo, at least while the band still exists.

MIke | 5/2/2007, 1:22 pm EST

Jack White is basically already solo. You think Meg writes those songs?

John Frusciante from the Peppers. That guy can sling a guitar.

the porksword | 5/2/2007, 2:06 pm EST

marky mark minus the funky bunch

Bangers-N-Mash | 5/2/2007, 2:08 pm EST

You’d be dumb to say Wayne Coyne needs to go solo. He may write the lyrics… but Steven Drozd is responsible for 2/3 of that band’s current sound. Wayne may be a visionary.. but without Drozd’s music, it’d be half as good.

smarter than you | 5/2/2007, 6:38 pm EST

john fruciante already did go solo you moron

meconium | 5/3/2007, 7:48 pm EST

Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. If it is anything like the demo version of 405 from The Forbidden Love e.p., then it would be well worth it.

Anonymous | 5/3/2007, 10:08 pm EST

Pete Best.

Punk16 | 5/4/2007, 12:14 am EST

All those people intent on splitting pearl jam up, Stone gossard recorded Bayleaf in 200/2001 which was his solo release.
Mike McCready is more of a musician than singer, but has been in side project bands such as mad season and rockfords.
Jeff ament is in 3 fish, again if you hear his vocals, he is more of a musician.
Even the drummer is allowed a side project like wellwater conspiracy.
While they are great musicians, they aint great vocalists (see Stone singing mankind on no-code).
Vedder does have forays into solo efforts (i am sam soundtrack, ramones – we’re a happy family)even as a drummer for hovercraft 2000. Individually they are great musicians, however Vedder is the lead singer for a reason. To truly experience the talents of the musicians as solo artists/side projects check out some early green river/mother love bone/shadow

Rocket Man | 5/4/2007, 9:41 am EST

Kyle Gass – I think his vocal harmonies and axe-slinging skills hint at great potential for solo performances (despite the vision Pick of Destiny portrays).

Nally Sava | 5/4/2007, 4:48 pm EST

Win Butler

Katie | 5/5/2007, 2:28 pm EST

dave grohl…he can sing, play guitar and the drums…he could BE his own band

Martin | 5/5/2007, 9:47 pm EST

Katie

Dave Grohl already been there, done that: Probot (2004).

Katie | 5/5/2007, 11:53 pm EST

well he should do it again

charliemapleton | 5/14/2007, 4:35 pm EST

John McCrea-lyrically and melodically,he waivers between somber and mellow, which are his purest qualities.

paintirorange | 10/16/2007, 7:51 pm EST
