Big Boi Joins The Ballet, Constantine Woos Housewives, TRL Renamed

5/1/07, 9:00 am EST

Big Boi

  • Outkast’s Big Boi is working with the Atlanta ballet in a new piece scheduled for April 10-13, 2008. No idea what this work will be called, no idea if he’s contributing musically and or if Big Boi will be wearing tights. All those details are forthcoming. What we do know is that Big Boi will be meeting with choreographer Lauri Stallings and dancers from Purple Ribbon Entertainment on Tuesday to get started.
  • Former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis is set to play a hunky music producer on The Bold and the Beautiful. He’s stint on the soap begins May 15th and will last several months (a one-off appearance in daytime TV time).
  • One person was injured and nine others arrested after gunfire erupted outside Young Buck’s afterparty at a Kennewick, Washington Hilton on Saturday night. Authorities report that six shots were fired by at least two guns.
  • Check out Rob Reiner’s new Spinal Tap short. The film, which is just called Spinal Tap, is part of a campaign called SOS/Live Earth. In it, the band discuss, among other things, their dedication to charity work like campaigns to help ferrets by raising money to get them Caesar Salad. [via Pop Candy]
  • MTV seems to be hoping that a bad pun will save TRL. The network is renaming the once-vital video request show, which has been plummeting in the ratings of late, YouRL (get it, like “url”) in order to appeal to their super Web savvy young fanbase.
  • Prepare for the 750,000th re-re-re-release of Beyonce’s album B-Day, this time without the song “Still In Love (Kissing You)” B is being accused of having stolen from Des’ree.

I believe Constantine’s story should be what is known as the great American story. The story of being persistent and following your dream. A few years ago, he was sleeping on someone’s couch, doing odd jobs, auditioning for theater and music gigs, and playing small clubs with his band. Now, fans of all ages are screaming for him, asking for autographs, photos, buying anything and everything with his voice or likeness on it, and even flying thousands of miles to multiple concerts, Broadway shows and off-Broadway shows to see him perform. Yes, I’m very happy to see that what he has worked so hard to achieve is happening for him. And.. I’ll be taping every episode of the Bold and the Beautiful starting May 15.

Having witnessed from the 2nd row one of the hottest rock n’ roll shows in my music-loving life recently in NYC from Constantine (AFTER this rocker-at-heart retired from a 25 yr. career of teaching h.s. English!), he had me at “HEY…let’s DO IT!”
True, he has a degree in vocal music/theater from an impressive music conservatory; true, his songs are as eclectic as his multi-aged fans..but that edgy, risky inner rocker is always present every time he steps on stage!
For me, that “x-factor” is what sets him apart -and judging from the many kudos he got from theater critics and fellow artists for his role in Jacques Brel, I’m not the only one who feels it: “impressive vocals”, “refreshing “interpretation”, “exciting innate ability to connect with the audience” … This guy has caused me to do things I never imagined I would do for ANY entertainer…like buy a DVR for a soap opera!!

screaming girls sound nice... | 5/1/2007, 1:28 pm EST

Who wouldn’t want to watch 30 seconds of a video while girls are screaming in the background? I for one welcome the new TRL. Let there be many shout outs and nonsensical kids screaming in hysteria. It’s not like the videos they play had any real point worth watching in the first place. Oh, and bring some rappers on to talk about their latest album.

/puke

The epitome of meaningless music gets its 1 minute on that show before being tossed in the trash like a used whore in a huge record label exec circle jerk.

“He’s stint on the soap…”

HIRE A PROOFREADER ALREADY

Young Buck be packin yo. Why do rappers get such a bad “rap”. As long as they are killing each other instead of humans, we should rejoice.

TRL never mattered.

I can’t find the full 15 minute Spinal Tap movie, only a news story about it. Where’s the full movie?

Man, it makes me feel old to remember the days when TRL mattered.

A mixture of AI and soap opera news? What the blue fuck is going on here?

Ha ha, MTV! Video killed the radio star, and then it killed the video star!
Hell, mispelling did wonders for Outkast, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, how can it not work for a superficial TV show that appeals to 12 year olds?

Wasn’t Des’Ree only asking for $150,000 bucks? Guess the song couldn’t be too good if they just decided to scrap it, instead. (’cause you know, the rest of B-Day is a sonic masterpiece…)
