Coachella Day Three: Rage On

4/30/07, 10:30 am EST

“Good evening,” Zack de la Rocha said on Sunday night, looking out at the 50,000 or so people gathered in front of Coachella’s main stage. “We are Rage Against the Machine, from Los Angeles, California.” With that, guitarist Tom Morello — wearing a baseball band emblazoned with the word “Unite” — kicked into the winding riff of “Testify,” beginning Rage’s first concert in seven years. De La Rocha rapped with so much force that his microphone distorted as he enunciated every word of the lyrics, which were written about the first Gulf War but sounded eerily current: “Baghdad is burning… The war is right outside your door!”

There were signs that this reunion may be fragile: the band didn’t display much affection for each other on stage, with Morello and de la Rocha never quite making eye contact. While they didn’t add anything new to their their hip-hop Zeppelin sound, they did pick up right where they left off, playing with a fierce sense of mission. De la Rocha, who cut off his dreads and grew a modest afro during his years in the wilderness, was short on small talk: One of the few signs that he might have been enjoying himself came when he yelled, “Yes indeed!” during the opening of “Guerilla Radio.” “What better place than here,” he rapped on that song, letting the crowd supply the all-too-appropriate next line: “What better time than now?”

During the final pre-encore song, “Wake Up,” de la Rocha finally spoke to the crowd at length, spitting a furious political rant that began by suggesting that every U.S. president should have been hung for war crimes. “This current administration is no exception — they should be hung and tried and shot,” he said, during the song’s breakdown. “But the challenges we face go beyond the current administration… It’s not a system that changes every four years.. It’s a system we have to tear down, generation after generation.” The band moved back into the main riff, while de la Rocha screamed “Wake up!”

The set concluded with Rage’s masterpiece, “Killing In The Name,” which reached a predictable peak as de la Rocha and the crowd shouted “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me” again and again. While there were vague rumors of a post-Rage riot floating around the festival — some of the police officers on site even had pellet guns ready — the show ended as peacefully as any other year, with exhausted, sunburned fans simply trudging towards the dusty parking lots.

Saying I went to extremes to get to Coachella this year is an understatment. I am one of the very few who after a decade of heroin addiction, made it out alive. One of my biggest regrets was not seeing a RATM show while they were together. I got my life back and fufilled a dream. Today I believe in miracles.

Johnny Sepulveda | 5/1/2007, 5:15 pm EST

They “reunited” because they’re broke. But I don’t care…

F*CK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME.

It aint black and white | 5/1/2007, 1:55 pm EST

by “10%”, Im totally guessing on that number but since thats about the US average for people that give/ involve3 themselvs in non-profits, Im talking about the stereotypical, jock guys (that Cobain used to rail on) that Ive seen at Rage shows that seem more concerned with the scene than listening to the band.

Im guessing at least some people may be moved by their music but what pecantage that attend their shows later increase their zeal I have no idea.

It aint black and white | 5/1/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Rage’s style of delivery is no differnet than Bill O’Reilly’s, Al Franken’s, Michael Moore’s, George Bush/ Dick Cheney, and Rush Limbaugh, Jesse jackson….their method attacts eyeballs and ears and SELLS RECORDS.

Kinda hard to take the lyrics of a band like Rage seriously when they allegedly abhor capitalism and corporate structure yet…….sign…to. …an d…e mbrace…..major records like Epic (or capitol or whatever conglomerate they appear on), make videos for MTV, and worse, agree to headline Coachella.

Rage’s argument would be (I thought I heard Morello state this ain an interview)they arent selling out they are simply trying to reach the widest audience possible. Perhaps. Or perhaps not. Fugazi did the same thing while maintaining their credibility and doing none of the above.

I doubt even 80% of the people attending their shows/ are familiar with them even care about socio-economic conditions in the developing world or the US

They are no Fugazi.

That said, they are undeniably one of the most intriguing and passionate bands….ever.

I saw Rage at one of their first ever “public” shows opening for Porno for Pyros at Castaic Lake about 12 years ago and they blew me away- so did the other few times I saw them 10 years ago.

and if only 10%, or whatever the miniscule number may be that may feel moved to involve themselves in plotics and non-profits than more power to them.

Looks like 10 year olds made it to the board. Rage has been one of the the bravest political bands to ever shed light on injustice, abuse and monopoly. For those who say that it is a waste of time to “whine on stage”, Zack figured out that he could do more by being more involved in organizations and that’s why he left the band initially. Now, it seems that he has a message to spread at large and to reach the masses, his music is the best way to do it. There are things we can do to help fight the power and a good starting point is at www.ratm.com under “Actions”.

Peace.

MJ was there | 5/1/2007, 12:45 pm EST

I was there, they were incredible (insanity and politics aside), it was a great show, a great set, and a great way to end a great festival.

Idjits love Bernie | 5/1/2007, 11:59 am EST

Rage is a band about THEIR version of truth and reality …. based on discredited ideology and a merging of rap and metal, two genres responsible for 80% of the most overwrought lyrics in recent music.
The only thing most of us want to CHANGE is keeping self-important PREACHERS like RATR from telling us how we “need” to live our own lives. Spare me.

bernard | 5/1/2007, 11:43 am EST

Rage is a band about truth. Truth and reality is what they preach. So i can’t really see why some of you can’t see that. What type of world do you think you live in?

All i know is i am happy they are back and if you are a person who wants change you have to get invi\olved, use your mind and do something. Rage is amazing.

nice try buddy | 5/1/2007, 11:34 am EST

Oh my god!!!!! I wish I could have rocked so hard with the Rages! Those guy make Politics sounds Heavy! You know what I say? Keep it on the heavy groove, brothers!

WHO CAN SAY THAT TWO TIME! Fresh!

Oz | 5/1/2007, 9:20 am EST

Rap/Metal. Good job America, we’ve successfully blocked a revolutionary band into tiny little cliche. Fuck.

Oz | 5/1/2007, 9:11 am EST

…but I still like rage.

Oz | 5/1/2007, 9:10 am EST

There are no radical headlining bands in McMerica…Wake up.

Rage On Haters | 5/1/2007, 12:51 am EST

The only thing Rage ever motivated me to change was the radio station and my political affiliation to Republican.
Dude, there’s loads of guys - no “gurls” allowed - in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and North Korea who are ALSO motivated to change the world. I believe they also don’t allow gays, adulterers and infidel to serve BUT, they are totally RAGING ON! Happy?

More Rage? | 5/1/2007, 12:37 am EST

Yeah right, the world needs MORE rage. More rap metal is exactly what will save the world. More likely to save Zach and Tom from guest hosting “I Love The 90’s” on VH-1 for another year. Now THAT’S radical!

Boner | 4/30/2007, 10:37 pm EST

My balls.

Kashfi | 4/30/2007, 9:04 pm EST

I think the world could use a lot more Rage; I always felt like Rage’s music always ignited a flame within a person causing him or her to question their world and more importantly TRY to change it.

Rage! on.

Dwayne Brownstein | 4/30/2007, 6:44 pm EST

1) Rage is touring this summer with Wu-Tang.

2) the event was NOT oversold; there were tickets available thru Ticketmaster as of Friday. and the event did NOT have 100,000 people. The event had 60,000 people. period.

Dwayne Brownstein | 4/30/2007, 6:35 pm EST

this year’s lineup was f**king pathetic.

Dwayne Brownstein | 4/30/2007, 6:33 pm EST

re “I was there!” Way to go, idiot. way. to. go.

Aaron | 4/30/2007, 6:02 pm EST

I give Coachella 2 or 3 more years before people start burning things and raping women.

I hope Rage do a full on tour. They may not be adding much to their sound, but I’ll take old Rage over new Fall Out Boy every day and twice on sundays.

Boner | 4/30/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Censors are pretty quick today. Read below.

Boner | 4/30/2007, 3:01 pm EST

Now that’s funny!

I Was There! | 4/30/2007, 2:58 pm EST

The comment just before says that Rage’s reunion debut was a “nice topic”. I’ll go a step or two further by saying it was a history making woodstock-esque night in the California desert. Our country is at war, we are trashing our enviorment and Rage fuels people to take action. Oversold by thousands they estimate 110,000 to 125,000 people united by music and inspired by the passion of one of the greatest rock bands ever. Words can not describe what it felt like to be there chanting along to Bulls on Parade and Guerilla Radio’s “ALL HELL CANT STOP US NOW” I’m still afterglowing.

Boner | 4/30/2007, 2:47 pm EST

Between Zachs incoherent rants and Morellos new solo material, they’ve really become a laughing stock. When will artists learn that all their crying and bitching is irrelevant? We still have a monkey in the white house and the dems are gonna get their asses kicked AGAIN in 2008. Keep bringin the funny. Suckers.

Rage Against the Hypocrisy | 4/30/2007, 12:43 pm EST

If Morello is so “radical”, can we assume he performed for free?

NATAS | 4/30/2007, 12:28 pm EST

Their politics can be a little out there but RAGE is one of the greatest bands ever, well at least the best rap/rock band.

ko | 4/30/2007, 12:20 pm EST

this story needs some serious editing. i expected a little more from RS…

Andy | 4/30/2007, 11:53 am EST

It’s a shame Zach lost his mind. He’s utterly insane!

john | 4/30/2007, 11:00 am EST

cool rage is back…they look a little old though….at least from the pics I saw

banana hammock | 4/30/2007, 10:48 am EST
