“Icky Thump” Likely to Rock Your World

4/26/07, 10:38 am EST

White Stripes

This week, we were hitting that post-lunch inspiration lull when we were treated to a special listening session of the new White Stripes album, Icky Thump. That really perked us up. The former couple in red and white has done it again; this album rocks. From the opening title track on through, Icky Thump (out June 19th) reflects the band’s continued allegiance to the blues-influenced garage rock that has made the White Stripes one of the most formidable bands of the decade, but they’ve fleshed out their sound in ways we haven’t heard before. Gone is the super-basic, sometimes rigid minimalism. It’s been replaced with looser, more muscular and expansive instrumentation. Also, in between big Zeppelin-esque rock tunes, there are some playfully weird sounds on this album. We heard everything from bagpipes to the old school Univox synthesizer, and on the particularly crazy cover of “Conquest” (a Corky Robbins tune) there are some wild mariachi horns at work.

Icky Thump is going to kick the Llama’s ass.

Sanchez | 4/26/2007, 11:10 am EST

Now that I’ve just heard “Icky Thump”, I have to say….I was right.

lik roper | 4/26/2007, 11:26 am EST

i mean; they’re pretty good, but they’re not THAT good RS – that chick can barely play the drums and they don’t even have a bass player!? what is up with that!? – you know; why don;t paul and ringo form a band with just the two of them!…

Sanjaya | 4/26/2007, 11:33 am EST

What a bunch of crap…this band is so overrated.

Tallboy | 4/26/2007, 11:38 am EST

I happen to like the Stripes a lot and expect the album to be good, but Jack and Meg could fart the album and RS would give it a rave review.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 11:41 am EST

First 2 albums were good. Third album was almost great. Fourth album was very good, but overrated with filler in the middle. Fifth album was a piece of garbage that RS gave FIVE stars to.

The single “Icky Thump’ is pretty good….not sure how it’s gonna hold up to repeated plays – it’s too long but the lyrics at the end are the best part.

Cafe Wha? | 4/26/2007, 11:44 am EST

The White Stripes are a good band, but the Strokes and Kings of Leon are better.

Cafe Wha? | 4/26/2007, 11:45 am EST

The White Stripes are a good band, but the Strokes and Kings of Leon are better..

John | 4/26/2007, 11:45 am EST

Sanchez, pal, where did you hear the new album??

Yeah....right | 4/26/2007, 11:48 am EST

Strokes and Kings of Leon better…I almost laughed myself out of the chair at that one…

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 11:51 am EST

Is This It is a better record than any White Stripes album…..I suppose you could argue on the bands overall.

Strokes : 1 masterpiece, 1 good album, 1 pretty good album (FIOE)

Stripes : 1 almost great album (WBC), 1 very good one (Elephant), 2 good ones (first 2), one piece of crap (”Satan”).

Sanchez | 4/26/2007, 11:54 am EST

I tried to post the link.
I google the title track…its an XFM broadcast.

Fresh song.

Michael | 4/26/2007, 11:54 am EST

Wow “Sanjaya”, with a username like that I think you must have confused the Stripes with yourself.
I can’t wait for this album after Get Behind Me Satan, which I never really got.

FtheStrokes | 4/26/2007, 11:55 am EST

The Strokes are terrible, why are they even being brought into this? A masterpiece? You must be high.

Evan | 4/26/2007, 11:56 am EST

Holy Zoinks! My hyperbole detector is going off the walls!

This song isn’t nearly as good as you say it is, Rollingstone. Sure, it’s good, but give us a break and just say “Icky Thump is a good song” not “Icky Thump is so good you might crap your pants. And because its so good, you might just be driven insane and then eat the pants that you had previously crapped in!” good lord, guys.

Dare To Hear A Fool | 4/26/2007, 11:58 am EST

i went into reading this hoping that you people at RS would give me something that i haven’t already heard about the new album but you didn’t. what you did is just write the same damn stuff that you’ve already told us before. thanks…

Nathan | 4/26/2007, 12:00 pm EST

Awesome song! Anybody who thinks it’s not is a big ol’ drooling retard.

fartie lange | 4/26/2007, 12:03 pm EST

I listened to icky thump about 7 times this morning. It’s probably the best thing to hit America since sliced bread.

surley | 4/26/2007, 12:05 pm EST

if i was a big drooling retard i’d be in White Stripes

Jim | 4/26/2007, 12:08 pm EST

Why does every reviewer compare the White Stripes sound to Led Zeppelin? They couldn’t be more different…I don’t get it.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 12:18 pm EST

I classify Is This It as a masterpiece because it’s a masterpiece of it’s type. And I’m not high. It can stand with the best of the records that inspired it – play it next to “Rocket to Russia” and see how well it holds up………..or maybe you don’t think “Rocket to Russia” is a masterpiece either, which basically means we can’t have a discussion.

The Stripes cop a certain element of sound from Zeppelin but the sensibility is different. I like the Stripes and can’t stand Zeppelin , so it’s not like they don’t have their own thing going…..it’s the differences that makes all the diference.

mr. kenny | 4/26/2007, 12:34 pm EST

don’t believe the hype. if you like it you like it. i find it impossible to determine until i’ve heard it. i’m so often disappointed after an album has had so much hyperbolie written about it.people do what they are told,so they buy white stripe and repeat what they’ve read. they hear it on the car radio and run in to request it at the bar.it makes them part of a real hip club.all because somebody got to party with the band backstage and writes glowing articles about their buddies. moby grape was hyped as the next big band of the 60’s springsteen was to be the next bob dylan.it goes on and on. trust your ears don’t let one guy who programs 100 radio stations decide who is a star.and ohyeah this applies to politics too

auramac | 4/26/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Loretta Lynn kicks all their asses!

(And I hate most country music..)

F_tard | 4/26/2007, 12:49 pm EST

if white stripes make such great cds why come nobody plays anything but 7nation army on the radio?

Ash | 4/26/2007, 12:51 pm EST

the white stripes can do no wrong!

baba o riley | 4/26/2007, 1:03 pm EST

“one piece of crap (”Satan”).”

i can’t believe all the hate i’m hearing for Get Behind Me, Satan. I was really into that… as much as any other White Stripes album. I’m not saying it was perfect but if i were to listen to one White Stripes record right now, that would be it.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 1:09 pm EST

To me there’s no songs on that last album……it’s just a bunch of half written tunes. I dunno, obviously Rob Sheffield thought it was great too.

I didn’t like the Raconteurs either – to me something happened to his songwriting, where he’s gone into this bad routine of “70s Deep Purple riff, nonsense lyrics, Meg keeps the beat, solo, end”. It’s almost like he’s become too cool to finish the songwriting or something.

I’m hoping for a comeback though – i do think this new single is decent.

baba o riley | 4/26/2007, 1:19 pm EST

“it’s just a bunch of half written tunes.”

well that’s cool man, i can accept that. that wasn’t my take, obviously, but we all gots different opinions.

at any rate, i too am curious to hear what the rest of Icky Thump will sound like. i hope it proves to be a fun listen.

Drugs Delaney | 4/26/2007, 1:25 pm EST

White Stripes rock. RS gives them great reviews b/c they know good music when they hear it. Jack White is one of the best guitarists of all time. Anyone who actually plays the guitar could tell you that. He also has an incredible voice to boot.

No need to compare them to the Strokes. Why compare them?

Dr. Caligari | 4/26/2007, 1:26 pm EST

This has to be better than “Satan”–keeping my fingers crossed.

the porksword | 4/26/2007, 1:27 pm EST

the white stripes…MAN, i don’t care!

ABSOLUTE SHIT. | 4/26/2007, 1:28 pm EST

More EMO/INDIE crap for losers!

ABSOLUTE CRAP BAND! | 4/26/2007, 1:32 pm EST

YUCK!

Barry | 4/26/2007, 1:41 pm EST

“They don’t even have a bass player!” Wow. So smart. You probably never heard of the Black Keys.

Quick, go press play and listen to the rest of your Good Charlotte CD.

Ender | 4/26/2007, 1:46 pm EST

I like the Stripes but the 3rd grade caliber lyrics (I’m thinking about my doorbell, when you gonna ring it”) make me cringe. Musically they are gifted but lyrically they are weak, weak, weak.

cromwell | 4/26/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Best song I’ve heard in a while. These guys (girl) can rock harder than any other band out there right now.

garbage. | 4/26/2007, 1:49 pm EST

not even worth downloading for free.

THE FACTS | 4/26/2007, 1:53 pm EST

The least you know about music the more you will enjoy this band. Most of thier music is a COMPLETE rip off of old blues & rock albums…

AVOID!

CLUELESS RS!!! LOL! | 4/26/2007, 1:54 pm EST

This is horrible!

How to tell if u are a LOSER.. | 4/26/2007, 1:56 pm EST

out of thousands & thousands of CDS you got to a record shop & buy this mess…

LOSER.

I'd rather listen to CREED | 4/26/2007, 1:57 pm EST

than this sorry ass “band” great drumming ya cow!

Jeff | 4/26/2007, 1:58 pm EST

I hope Jack White gets colon cancer

Mary | 4/26/2007, 1:59 pm EST

I saw em once & they SUCKED! That chick has to be the worst drumer EVER & the girly looking dude whines more than sings.

SURVEY SHOWS: | 4/26/2007, 2:00 pm EST

This band sux monket balls!

3rdman | 4/26/2007, 2:13 pm EST

Hey, if you don’t like the stripes it’s your right. But saying they have no talent is crazy talk. What is wrong with being different? I thought the point of Rock N Roll was to sing and play the things that move you. He doesn’t need a bass player in the band just becuase all of the other bands have one. It is a sad day when so many people can have hate for such a unique fun band. JW has 1 child and another on the way… stay classy Jeff!

Izzy | 4/26/2007, 2:18 pm EST

As far as RS is concerned – White Stripes could lay a big steaming pile of crap on their conference room table and they would put a picture of it on the cover of the next issue & rave about it for 3 or 4 issues in a row. RS just can’t put out a single issue w/ out something about the White Stripes in it – even if they have to make something up. It’s sad. Hey RS editors – there ARE other bands / artists out there you know. Jeeez… you have an crush /obsession like a 13 year old school girl. Move on.

cc | 4/26/2007, 2:26 pm EST

original and exciting music, love this band, tired of the same old stuff

Will | 4/26/2007, 2:35 pm EST

“As far as RS is concerned – White Stripes could lay a big steaming pile of crap on their conference room table and they would put a picture of it on the cover of the next issue & rave about it for 3 or 4 issues in a row.”

Same applies to what they think of Bob Dylan and The Killers. Still, the new album should be good.

Rocky | 4/26/2007, 2:35 pm EST

GO STRIPES! Beat that snow leopards ass! All the haters can go listen to black-eyed peas. Then go get aids, give it to your mom. Maybe the next time hinder comes into town she can go ride their cocks (because she’s a whore groupie, dude you had to know that) and give them aids too. Only then will I be satisfied. Mainly the Hinder getting AIDS part.

The Grubby 1 | 4/26/2007, 2:37 pm EST

WOOOOHOOOOO! WHITE STRIPES FOR PREDISENT…S…OR SOMETHING! THEY ROCK!

El Fuego Phallus | 4/26/2007, 2:40 pm EST

As the resident music guru in this discussion I declare that The White Stripes do, in fact, kick major ass. I am right; anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. I’d put money on my prediction that most of the naysayers in this group know absolutely nothing about music and/or have a below average IQ.

Joe | 4/26/2007, 2:43 pm EST

I guess Jimmy Page and Bob Dylan are both wrong too. Both are HUGE fans of the band. The WS are a rock band’s band.

Ian | 4/26/2007, 2:45 pm EST

Will: RS gave the Killers sams town 2 stars.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 2:49 pm EST

Bob Dylan and Jimmy Page liking the White Stripes is proof of nothing other than they share the same taste. I mean I like the Stripes in the general sense but I don’t like “Get Behind Me Satan” so if Dylan did would that make me “wrong”. I don’t think so, with all due respect to his royal Bobness.

You don’t want to fall into that kind of trap when talking about artistic worthiness – it’s a dead end.

Pete | 4/26/2007, 2:50 pm EST

I like how you celebrate this by putting a 5-year-old picture of the band up. Yeah. Cool song, though. I’m surprised by how fired up people still get about this.

Kevin | 4/26/2007, 2:58 pm EST

The new song is really good. Its better than Blue Orchid, the first single from Get Behind Me Satan

33 | 4/26/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Yes rollingstoned…. it makes you wrong.

Lawrence | 4/26/2007, 3:10 pm EST

Jack White is BY FAR the most talented visonary in Rock and Roll today. With both of his bands I get everything i need from music. His knowledge of the history makes his art so important and refreshing. I can’t wait to hear the new tunes. As far the guy ripping RS for liking the White Stripes and everything they do, it’s justified but also they are the ones who put Fall Out Boy and Panic! on there covers over the last months, so talk of real mucial talent is refreshing these days. WS need to get Kings of Leon to open and all is well in the world.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 3:14 pm EST

Nah, really it doesn’t, it makes you unable to articulate an assessment of something..

Jimmy Page could like pleasuring himself to photos of Oprah Winfrey eating a ham sandwich in a thong, by your logic, you’d like that too.

Dylan I think doesn’t like ham though. :)

Joe | 4/26/2007, 3:17 pm EST

I was not taking up for Get Behind (even though I think it is a great album) I am taking up for the band as a whole. Due to all of the free-lance critics posting that the band has no talent. I think in that case my arguement makes tons of sense. I value the opinion of musicians over fans. You know, since they know a wee bit more about good music than your avg fan would!

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 3:27 pm EST

Joe – I see where you’re coming from, no disrespect intended. I really disagree with that assessment though.

Couldn’t a classical musician (ANY classical musician) say Rock and Roll is childish crap and have a point based on his own skill level. (Harry Connick used to say stuff like that all the time – that no Rock/Pop performer was worthy of a Jazz performer)……it gets you down a slippery slope.

There are better ways to make a case for the Stripes than that imo. (Of course, I’m not a musician, so there ya go….. :) )

abandonedstation | 4/26/2007, 3:36 pm EST

lots of hating goin’ on here…

Jack White’s been leaving the basic garage sound of their first three albums since he multi-tracked his vocals on Elephant. People usually hate it when their favorite bands expand their musical style and scope (no one’s professed much love for the Strokes new stuff), but Jack White’s not one to care what we all think.
That said, I really like Get Behind Me Satan. Red Rain is nice ‘n heavy, and Forever for Her (Is Over For me) is probably one of the most beautiful songs written this century (how’s that for hyperbole?).

Hobbs McGinter | 4/26/2007, 3:51 pm EST

The White Stripes are the best two-peice ever. Wait no, Scarlett Johanssen in a bikini is the best two-peice ever. The Stripes are # 2.

saylor828 | 4/26/2007, 3:55 pm EST

I second that Hobbs. Do McCartney/Lennon count as a two piece? Because I’d have to argue for them being in a top slot

T-Nasty | 4/26/2007, 3:56 pm EST

Who cares what random people have to say about White Stripes? Icky Thump is an awesome song and it’s not at all broad sounding in the sense that Seven Nation Army is. Hooray for creativity.

Casey | 4/26/2007, 4:14 pm EST

The White Stripes is one of the greates bands ever! NO one should doubt that this album is going to be awesome!

Borat | 4/26/2007, 4:58 pm EST

you can hear song on youtube. I like!!!!

david | 4/26/2007, 5:11 pm EST

white stripes are the BEST 2 peice ever. also 1 of the best recent garage bands, and all the of the other garage bands competeing with them were created snd inspired by them :-D

Hmmm... | 4/26/2007, 5:15 pm EST

Talking about The Strokes… Julian Casablancas kissed Jack White’s feet when he joined them on stage once… I understand that some people don’t like TWS, and can’t do anything but feeling sorry for those. It’s a pity not to have common sense, and being able to accept that taste is individual, and concidering the amount of fans TWS have, any crap-like comment finally leads to stupidity. Be for real!!! All right, there are many things I don’t like, but I’m not making an earthquake, and pushing earth and sky out of balance to offend anyone for enjoying it…

Mike27 | 4/26/2007, 5:16 pm EST

Sorry Rollingstoned, but GBMS is nothing short of a masterpiece – take your worthless opinions elsewhere.

Anonymous | 4/26/2007, 5:20 pm EST

How can you say that the White Stripes aren’t awesome. They have branched out creatively and basically shown that minimalists or indie bands can have success. Overall, the sound of Icky Thump is different, ad somewhat relates to their very first album. Its unique and that makes it awesome!

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Mike , see Hmmm’s comments and learn how to post with respect.

My opinion is no more worthless than yours, in fact it’s woth more because I’m at least interested in what people have to say, whether they agree with me or not. If you’re not, take your ball and go home

Why would I take my opinion elsewhere anyway ya freakin’ psycho when this is a thread ABOUT the White Stripes?

You think GBMS is a masterpiece? Ok, um, I think it’s a dud…..no harm. Maybe tell me what you like about it or something instead, otherwise, I’m not sure why your on a message board where people talk about bands???

jsyn | 4/26/2007, 5:32 pm EST

I can only speak for myself…. I think Get Behind Me Satan is excellent. The first 2 or 3 times I heard it, I was unsure. It was tough not getting any guitar solos and all. But over time it has grown to be my fav. WS album. I think the true beauty of those songs, is that he played them all so many different ways live. He has so many takes on each song, and all are great versions.

Barry | 4/26/2007, 5:41 pm EST

Get Behind Me Satan was a different record, and showed progression. Thank god they’re not just making the same record over and over again. If you’re not sure why you don’t like it, listen to “Instict Blues” and then realize you actually do like it, you were just blinded for a little. It’s okay. Everyone makes mistakes.

jsyn | 4/26/2007, 5:47 pm EST

I have all of the WS albums, and all of the Strokes albums. Both are great bands, which sadly we have few of these days. I think we have some really great singer/songwriters, but not many BANDS. All of the THE bands I feel, was the last good uprise for Rock Music in America. I do like The Killers, only for the Boss like “It sucks to be from here” story telling. The Stripes are my fav. band bar none. But fighting over who’s better WS or Strokes, is apples and oranges.

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 5:47 pm EST

I think I don’t like it because the songwriting is weaker (actually, I’m sure that’s why I don’t like it :) )

The songs seem half written on that record, it’s not the fact that it’s different that bothers me. It seems like an album of half baked ideas.

I also hate his vocals on that record, really pushing the jokey falsetto. Like I said I liked their first 4 records, to varying degrees, and think Elephant is a very good record and WBC is just shy of being a great one, but GBMS and The Raconteurs record just seem smug to me – really full of themselves posturing type things that don’t bring the songwriting of his previous efforts.

I’m pulling for the comeback though with this new album – I’d like it to be great. I’m not a hater by any means.

boo boo | 4/26/2007, 6:00 pm EST

COULD IT BE THAT HIS OTHER PROJECT FAILED AND HE HAD TO PULL ANOTHER WHITE STRIPES ALBUM OUT OF HIS ASS TO SAVE HIS REP…… ;~P

beckafella | 4/26/2007, 6:23 pm EST

The Strokes and The White Stripes?! Best message board ever! Does anyone agree The Strokes have kind of fallen out of favor with the RS though? No cover for FIOE?! The first Strokes cover rocked!

rollingstoned | 4/26/2007, 6:45 pm EST

Actually, I think the Strokes and RCA actually made a mistake with the way they marketed FIOE.

There was the thought in their camp that they were too aggressive for ROF promotion and that caused backlash (SPIN & RS Covers), so they went for a low key campaign – early Jan. release date, little initial print interviews, I had heard they even asked NOT to be on covers.

It didn’t work the way the wanted. We can argue about the quality of FIOE , but the way it was handled from a promotional aspect was awful.

Mark | 4/26/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Hey boo boo, Jack is alreay working on the next Racounteurs album before he goes on tour with Meg this summer. If it was such a failure why is working on a follow up? Could it be you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about?

Mike27 | 4/26/2007, 8:09 pm EST

rollingstoned

I like it cause its the white stripes and its a good album – it shows change, not just the same album over and over.

And I just noticed you said earlier that is this it is a better record than any the white stripes have done…untrue, im sorry but the strokes are soo overrated. Not that theyre horrible, but they just arent good.

digger attack | 4/26/2007, 8:21 pm EST

Whooo, digg front page. Prepare for spikage!

pablo escobar | 4/26/2007, 9:00 pm EST

jack white was supposed to die in that car accident several years ago. he was 27 so it would have been perfect. he’s put out nothing but garbage since then. de stijl is still the best white stripes album

GBarone | 4/26/2007, 9:10 pm EST

Thank Goodness we are living in these times.

Rock was horrible before the Strokes and the White Stripes came along. What these bands, and numerous others did was make rock cool again, and made young girls dance to rock and roll.

It’s that simple. Rock music that takes too much time to absorb makes kids look elsewhere for a soundtrack to their lives. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Joe | 4/26/2007, 11:16 pm EST

What does “..looser, more muscular..” mean ? I

stew | 4/26/2007, 11:30 pm EST

You can slag the White Stripes all you want, but you are still talking about them. The opposite of Love isn’t Hate, it’s Indifference.

Hunter | 4/26/2007, 11:31 pm EST

where is everyone hearing these tracks? someone wanna link me to em?

Smitty 87 | 4/26/2007, 11:45 pm EST

about time to hear news about kick ass bands again…the constant updates about FOB and Panic! weren’t exactly wetting my cock

Musical Dares | 4/27/2007, 1:02 am EST

You read it here first… Icky Thump is going to create a generational trauma in music. This is White Stripes (hell, music for the last 25 years)at it’s best. I don’t blame RS. They actually have taste.

Most overrated band in DECADES | 4/27/2007, 9:51 am EST

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!

jungleland | 4/27/2007, 9:55 am EST

yes they ARE that good.

So far in the last few years I’ve liked

White Stripes
The Killers
Wolfmother
Jet
Cold War Kids
Flaming Lips (I know theve been around forever)
The Hives

Of these, The White Stripes are my favorite by a good bit.

Jon | 4/27/2007, 10:23 am EST

I don’t know about their music, but how about them boobies.. damn meg!

FtheStrokes | 4/27/2007, 10:23 am EST

I don’t see the comparison between Rocket to Russia and Is This It really, though I do think one is much better than the other. Bottom line, I think any argument about the Stripes being overrated could just as easily be leveled against a band like the Strokes.

lostarchitect | 4/27/2007, 11:01 am EST

Please, people, please. If you are lumping in Jet and The Strokes with the White Stripes, you’re missing something big. Jet is one of the worst, most boring and unoriginal bands of the last 10 years. The Strokes are only marginally better. The White Stripes on the other hand have an inspired sound and can actually write music.

rollingstoned | 4/27/2007, 11:40 am EST

Well, I didn’t exactly say the White stripes were “overrated”, i said I thought their last album was a dud and they’ve never made a great album (WBC is just shy though).

Of course you could level the charge that the Strokes are overrated. You could say any band is overrated, it depends how well you structure your position.

“Rocket to Russia” was brought up by me because I think “Is This It” is quite similar to it, extremely similar – both are pop albums, somewhat similar sound and snap to them and both have an undercurrent of something deeper happening above songs that appear to be simple. I called “Is This It” a masterpiece, and someone disputed that, my point was to suggest that a masterpiece doesn’t have to be heavy going or super serious, it can be a masterpiece of its type.

rollingstoned | 4/27/2007, 11:42 am EST

The Strokes have more in common with the White Stripes than they do with a band like Jet. Jet and The Strokes aren’t similar in their sensibilities at all.

Maybe you don’t like Jet and you don’t like the Strokes, but, that’s the only overlap between them.

jrrr | 4/27/2007, 4:05 pm EST

everyone should shut up and listen to the Dolly Rocker Movement.

FthekidwhosaidFthestrokes | 4/27/2007, 5:38 pm EST

The strokes are one of the best american bands of the past 5 years as well as the kings of leon prior to the crap they just put out, titled because of the times. The new white stripes single is awful, and they haven’t put out a good album since elephant

blah blah balh | 4/27/2007, 6:52 pm EST

hey “FthekidwhosaidFthestrokes”
ho w can you say the white stripes havent put out a good album since elephant they only put one other album out and it wasnt terrible and to say this single is awful is bushwa have you heard there first two albums they all scream garage rock and roll and im not saying the strokes are a bad band but to say they put out a masterpiece? your telling me you could listen to the album all the way through and not get bored? ive only heard two or three albums that i can listen all the way through and be completley wowed one being kid a by radiohead

Scooby | 4/27/2007, 9:19 pm EST

Hey, awful lot of negativity here. Good thing Jack and Meg don’t give a crap, I’m sure. Their music has brought the blues back from obscurity and introduced some truly great blues to a younger generation with a new twist to it. Not everyone is apparently able to appreciate that. This album will kick ass.

Lou-retty | 4/27/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Jack White is a God, y’all!!!

Scooby | 4/27/2007, 9:23 pm EST

damn right!!

plasmic_vega | 4/28/2007, 8:26 am EST

if people think the white stripes are overrated, they should see them live. that would probably change some opinions. granted, if i don’t like a band’s albums, i probably wouldn’t want to see them live, either…. but the white stripes are brilliant.

Stripes | 4/28/2007, 7:10 pm EST

the white stripes are so freaking amazing, and whoever disagrees has a right too, but is so so wrong. i cant wait to hear the album and icky thump is a unique and amazing song. the white stripes are the best band ever and y’all better beleive it!

Peace :D

Mara | 4/28/2007, 11:30 pm EST

The White Stripes are definately unique in their band structure, their sound is raw and original… My favourite video is the Hardest Button to Button, it totally flows with the beat of the song.

Get Behind Me...or don't | 4/29/2007, 2:34 pm EST

The Strokes and The White Stripes are both amazing bands…period. And to all the haters out there, see them live, that is the way to tell a truly great band. And both don’t disappoint. Did anybody see Jack playing his guitar on Conan’s desk??

smileyface | 4/29/2007, 2:37 pm EST

Get Behind Me Satan is actually the white stripes’ best record to date. Most of you don’t realize this fact because you are actually a direct result of inbreeding. That’s why Jack and Meg make little incestuous jokes all the time. They are really just making fun of dumbasses that love horrible bands like the killers and then bash the greatest band of the last decade (and radiohead). GBMS is the Stripes’ alt-rock punk countercultural statement. Their “In Utero” or “Kid A”, if you will. Anyhow, I couldn’t be anymore excited for the new record.
P.S. For all us white stripes fans, we really shouldn’t feel the need to defend our band to these ignoramous’. Although thats exactly what I’m doing right now….

staindpearlygirl | 4/29/2007, 3:52 pm EST

YA! I SAW THE CONAN EPISODE, IT WAS EXCELLENT, AS ALWAYS. THE STRIPES ROCK IT AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEW CD.

Greup | 4/30/2007, 8:33 am EST

I wonder if WS havent had too much time in the studio this time around (3 weeks). Good song but a bit overworked for being them. :) But i cant wait to hear the rest of the album. I saw them live a while back an it was in many ways the best concert ive seen. :)

Meiks | 5/6/2007, 4:53 am EST

WS are awesome..no doubt one of the coolest rock n roll bands to come out in a long long time..i do like other rock but thats not clasified as rock n roll, anyways, the strokes aqre very good, but i dnt compare bands that are so different, i liek al of the albums by each WS and The strokes, and i do think icky thump will kick ass

Anonymous | 5/7/2007, 10:12 pm EST

I think that the White Stripes are the best band in the last decade PERIOD

el croz | 5/8/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Hope it is a better record than Get Behind Me Satan. Please make another De Stijl!!!

Mandy | 5/16/2007, 3:13 pm EST

Icky Thump is a glorious prelude to what I am sure will be another stellar album! I can hardly wait for it to hit the stores for purchase and I can wait even less for the concerts this summer. YES!

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I like to purchase albums. Yes it’s true, you still can find music stores once in a while if you search hard enough. Will certainly be buying this album on the 19th. Long live the compact disc.

Cassedy | 6/1/2007, 4:01 pm EST

Jet? Strokes? No bass player? Are this a message board full of 10 year olds? One thing I can guarentee you, the WS are not going to make another De Stijl. Why does everyone needs to look back in a bands career and wish they would stay the same. To the KOL poster… I bet you hated Aha Shake when it came-out.

EmmaFlavell | 6/2/2007, 8:34 am EST

I think its ok t o ‘look back at albums’ and hope that the next will be ‘along those same lines’ after all, its what drew ther person to that group in the first place. My fave all time songs by the stripes are ‘ truth doesnt make a noise’ ’same boy youve always known’ ‘ girl you have no faith in medicine’ little acorns’ ‘ball and biscuit’ ;southern can’ and dead leaves and the dirty ground.

Im going to see them in Paris in two and a half weeks. looking forward to hearing their new stuff, and hopefully some old stuff too.

YouHearItHere | 6/5/2007, 6:56 pm EST

This album is amazing! I did download it, even though Jack got so pissed at the q101 DJ for broadcasting it, but you can spread the word better this way.

From opening riff to final chord, it is just amazing. They are great in some respect on every album, and this is no exception.

Take all the best parts of Physical Graffiti and Zoso from Zeppelin, Over-Nite Sensation from Zappa, and a dash of Chicago blues and you have the glory that is Icky Thump. It is one of the best rock albums of the last ten years.

Better than De Stijl? YES.
Better than White Blood Cells? YES.
Better than The Strokes’ and Jet’s entire libraries? Oh God…YES.

Buy this album. Even I’m going to.

Jack the ripper | 6/10/2007, 10:06 am EST

Well well well, only heard icky thump thus far and judging by this track alone i got the feeling this album is ganna be another winner. I dont believe GBMS is a bad album, dont believe it is one of the better albums that the stripes have released either, but when u have released as many records as the WS i think your bound to have one that isn’t as greatas the others. I think the comparison of any two bands within or without any genre is ridiculous so the talk bout jet and the strokes is a little bewildering… Hope the album is a success and lovin megs red hair
p.s. i dont see the need for bored ppl to come online and critise any musicans work

Mark | 6/10/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Where can I download Icky Thump, the full album?

Blah | 6/11/2007, 10:28 pm EST

Yes, this album fucking rocks. Really hard to pick a weak song on this album, because they’re all great. Easily the best rock album I’ve listened to in years.

monty airline | 6/13/2007, 8:24 pm EST

iv’e just listened to the entire new album … it’s incredible. long-time fans will not be disappointed. with a little De Stijl, a little Elephant, the intense creative originality of GMBS, Icky Thump will definitely be a hit. check out “Rag and Bone”, so far my favorite track.

sticky bump | 6/14/2007, 8:38 pm EST

those of us who know, love the stripes. all you haters out there can stick to your dave mathews and john mayer garbage, all of you old folks and keep reliving the 60s, all of you virtuosos can talk about how jack white is no stevie ray vaughn or meg white is no john bonham and rock is dead blah, blah, blah. the white stripes rock, the strokes rock and there are many many more bands out there rockin’ the scene. creativity is doesn’t come to a stand still for no ones generation, it just keeps reinventing itself and those of you who who don’t like or understand it just need to get off of the merry go round and go find your momma.

Boring rubbish. Hopefully they’ll be gone soon.

dude | 8/20/2007, 8:27 pm EST

i like that they don’t push “alternative” down your throat but keep riff heavy, bluesy rock n roll alive. other retro bands could include wolfmother(think zepp/sabbath) and dragonforce(think maiden).

seedeliver | 5/4/2008, 1:33 am EST

for the what effect still there. and we leaves exploring along tree
