Kelly Clarkson to Cover Patty Griffin With Jeff Beck on Idol?

4/25/07, 2:44 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson

  • Rumor has it that Kelly Clarkson’s appearance on tonight’s super-obscenely-special-must-see-amazing-fabulous episode of American Idol (it’s all for a good cause so you’re supposed to feel guilty if you don’t watch) will involve her singing a cover of Patty Griffin’s “Up to the Mountain” with Jeff Beck of all people. You know we’ll be watching.
  • You gotta admire Pharrell’s commitment to getting his flop of a solo album — 2006’s In My Mind — some play. The guy apparently stalked ?uestlove into teaming up with him to re-work the albums tracks and wants to re-release it with the new title Out of My Mind. “Pharrell called me at 4 a.m. like three times in a row from Japan,” ?uestlove said. “I picked up and in his ’sell a drowning man water’ mode, he sold me on the album: ‘I need to make this world see my vision with this record. Please help me translate it, man!’ He had me dressing and in the studio starting this record five hours later.” No word yet on whether Pharrell’s label, Interscope Records, is behind the re-release.
  • We’re still in awe of the sheer quantity of drugs Willie Nelson was busted for possessing back in September. All these months later it’s good to hear that Nelson’s only punishment for his victimless crime is six months probation and the payment of $1,024. St. Martin Parish Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars said he dismissed the citations against both Nelson and his tour manager because there was no indication they “had anything to do with the contraband.” Comedy.
  • Someone at iTunes UK is cowering behind the watercooler right now as yesterday’s rumors that Bjork’s new album Volta leaked on iTunes two weeks before its release date seem to have actually been true. Volta was available on UK iTunes late from Monday night to early Tuesday morning.
  • FINALLY The Long Blondes‘ album Someone to Drive You Home is coming out here in the states (on June 5th). We’ve had a serious crush on the band’s cheeky new wave sound forever, so we’re almost as psyched the record will be available here as we are that they are planning to tour in support of it. Dates after the jump. [via BrooklynVegan]

Oh geez, I was gonna skip “Idol Gives Back,” but if Jeff Beck Kelly Clarkson will be on it I’ll definitely have to tune in now.

Kelly has a fat face.

Cheeky new wave sound. Great. Like we need more of that.

Pharrell needs to face reality about his true role of being a back up for Snoop and whatnot. Sorry dude, you’re just not cool enough to be solo.

I hope the producers of AI don’t harm Jeff Beck’s family, which is the only reason i could guess to why the guitar legend would appear on this show.

A drum roll from ?uestlove makes the medicine go down, in an extremely funky way…

I know it’s superficial to respect Willie Nelson a bit more just because he got off the hook after being busted for having a lot of drugs, but I do. Goddamnit, I do.

Bjork will ask Iceland to declare war on England for their grievous mistake. But not a real war. A Bjork war, where we fight each other with compliments and sleeping in is considered a good defensive strategy.

When I read ‘cheeky new wave sound’, I close my eyes and envy the deaf.

Poor poor Pharrell…what happened to those good old ”i’m a provider baby”? Looks like you’re now ”i’m a begger baby”… ?uestlove, man, you should have hung up and said, ”konichiwa Pharrell, but i ain’t jumpin’ on that grenade…”

auramac | 4/25/2007, 7:19 pm EST

She’d be fun to get drunk with. Yeah, I’d slip off the wagon for some fun and games with her… Jeff Beck. On Idol. Backing up- Kelly Clarkson?!? Aren’t his records selling?…. Of course, I must watch…

KELLY CLARKSON is going to blow everybody in rock outta the water with her next album – she’s set to become America’s premiere female rock vocalist, here shortly. She’s got the VOICE, attitude and perfect instinct to ROCK!

Kevin | 4/25/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Mike/Houston, TX. is the same dumbass who said Avril Lavigne has the real “spirit of rock” in her. Apparently, Kelly Clarkson shall be Lavigne’s right-hand accomplice in destroying everything I love about rock music. Where’s the need to experiment/push boundaries? Are all avenues closed? Why does pop, no matter how melodic/well-written, equal rock?

Why, God, why?

jeff beck ‘blow by blow’ and ‘wired’ are jeff beck’s best recordings (george martin produced blow by blow)…

If that post wasn’t a joke, (and I hope it is someone being that clever and not that painstakingly retarded) I will probably declare the death of the western mind as we know it.

i think mister beck wants a little somethin-somethin from kelly…shit; i want a little somethin-somethin from kelly!

I admire the fact Mr. Pharrell Williams is a well crafted mastermind-specifically him(along with Chad Hugo)making Star Trak an industrial success(as well as boosting mainstream/modern music darlings),releasing “In Search Of…” with N.E.R.D.(Version 2,and one of the best albums, especially in my case,of all time)building an illustrious urban clothing empire, among other achievements-but not to the point where particularly his whole musical vision becomes overkill.Truthfully,I don’t think “In My Mind” is all that bad of an album. It’s probably not as distinctive and intriging enough as anything else Pharrell or any project he was involved in has released, but it is dynamic and not too extra. So realistically, there was no need for a plan B by making a loosely instrumental version.Sorry P,but your spaceship seemingly missed the radar.

I’ve heard John Mayer Live and I’ve seen Jeff Beck Live.

No comparison.

Jeff Beck is to music what Bobby Orr was to hockey.

una esplendida voz con un increible guitarrista
