Like the time on Party of Five when Owen got lost at the mall, last night marked a “very special” episode of American Idol. Much as we support Idol’s noble goal of raising money for young people affected by poverty both at home and abroad, the whole affair had the icky taint of self-importance. The performances were all gut-wrenchingly heartfelt, laborious and generally just super-emo. Even Simon was neutered by the gravitas of the occasion. One can’t help but feel that, in a post-Sanjaya world, Idol just ain’t as much fun anymore.
Blake Lewis — whose two modes are limited to white b-boy and bargain basement Morrissey — sang “Imagine” so poorly that it made me imagine how awesome it would be to watch Sanjaya whimper through John Mayer’s “Waiting On the World to Change,” with his luscious Mayer-esque curls flapping in the breeze. Shockingly, Phil Stacey earned nothing but kudos for a performance of Garth Brooks’s inspirational number “The Change” that was so exquisitely boring, I seriously considered channel-surfing to a non-D’Onofrio Law & Order: Criminal Intent just to pass the time. (Chris Noth: Great as Mr. Big, but no match for D’Onofs in the perp-busting department.)
Par for the course, Melinda slayed on Faith Hill’s “There Will Come a Day,” and as the competition narrows to a shrinking pool of mediocre options, I’m starting to feel less annoyed by how polished and “aw shucks” she is. Lakisha, on the other hand, is losing more of her initial spark with each passing week, and will likely find herself in the bottom two again tonight. Her main competition for ouster looks to be Chris Richardson, who gave a forgettable rendition of Eric Clapton’s “If I Could Change the World.” Though Randy praised him for being “in it to win it,” and Simon de-neutered for a minute to call it “sexy,” there’s something about Richardson’s lack of humility that makes him ripe for an attitude-adjusting “Chris, your journey ends tonight.”
If I had to wager — which I suppose I do — I’d put my money on Lakisha, who seems to have the greater statistical chance of being booted tonight. While the lady gets props for her willingness to get all meta with her cover of Fantasia’s Idol-winning “I Believe,” methinks the Lakisha train is about out of steam. If she makes it another week, she ought to consider tackling Taylor Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud?” with Blake accompanying her on beat-box. It’s the one thing that might take viewers’ minds off how much more fun they’d be having if only there were a reality TV show where Sanjaya, Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young compete to see who can pull the most post-Idol poon.
