Blogging American Idol: Let the Post-Sanjaya Healing Begin

4/25/07, 10:46 am EST

Lakisha Jones of American IdolLike the time on Party of Five when Owen got lost at the mall, last night marked a “very special” episode of American Idol. Much as we support Idol’s noble goal of raising money for young people affected by poverty both at home and abroad, the whole affair had the icky taint of self-importance. The performances were all gut-wrenchingly heartfelt, laborious and generally just super-emo. Even Simon was neutered by the gravitas of the occasion. One can’t help but feel that, in a post-Sanjaya world, Idol just ain’t as much fun anymore.

Blake Lewis — whose two modes are limited to white b-boy and bargain basement Morrissey — sang “Imagine” so poorly that it made me imagine how awesome it would be to watch Sanjaya whimper through John Mayer’s “Waiting On the World to Change,” with his luscious Mayer-esque curls flapping in the breeze. Shockingly, Phil Stacey earned nothing but kudos for a performance of Garth Brooks’s inspirational number “The Change” that was so exquisitely boring, I seriously considered channel-surfing to a non-D’Onofrio Law & Order: Criminal Intent just to pass the time. (Chris Noth: Great as Mr. Big, but no match for D’Onofs in the perp-busting department.)

Par for the course, Melinda slayed on Faith Hill’s “There Will Come a Day,” and as the competition narrows to a shrinking pool of mediocre options, I’m starting to feel less annoyed by how polished and “aw shucks” she is. Lakisha, on the other hand, is losing more of her initial spark with each passing week, and will likely find herself in the bottom two again tonight. Her main competition for ouster looks to be Chris Richardson, who gave a forgettable rendition of Eric Clapton’s “If I Could Change the World.” Though Randy praised him for being “in it to win it,” and Simon de-neutered for a minute to call it “sexy,” there’s something about Richardson’s lack of humility that makes him ripe for an attitude-adjusting “Chris, your journey ends tonight.”

If I had to wager — which I suppose I do — I’d put my money on Lakisha, who seems to have the greater statistical chance of being booted tonight. While the lady gets props for her willingness to get all meta with her cover of Fantasia’s Idol-winning “I Believe,” methinks the Lakisha train is about out of steam. If she makes it another week, she ought to consider tackling Taylor Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud?” with Blake accompanying her on beat-box. It’s the one thing that might take viewers’ minds off how much more fun they’d be having if only there were a reality TV show where Sanjaya, Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young compete to see who can pull the most post-Idol poon.

Sanjaya is adorable, lovable and charming. He has class. He is cool. His winning smile brings warmth to the heart. He is a gentle, courageous, and most gracious young man. He has shown a magnetic stage presence, an aura of his inner spirit that only true talents possess. The goodness of his heart is present. He has a melodious, appealing voice that I love to listen to. His sense of timing and style is impeccable. Coordinates movements beautifully. He gave four winning performances. Sanjaya is on the way to stardom. Be true to your heart. Work hard; you’ll make it, actually, the AI Finals showed us that you are there already. We love you and suppot you all the way.

UnlikeU | 5/11/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Sandra, I think that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You are encouraging a CHILD with not a whole lot of talent to drop out of school and follow a career that may or may not take him somewhere. What if he takes your advice and then turns into nothing and has no schooling to fall back on. That is not very intelligent. If he really wants to follow this dream through, he should stay in school, just in case it doesn’t work out.

sandra | 5/7/2007, 11:44 pm EST

everyone needs to encourage sanjaya to grab this opportunity for stardom and not worry about going to school right now that can come eventually right now he needs to accept offers and go for it people change timing is key i had an awesome opportunity, put it off till later and later never came i had lost that innocense and magic that often comes with youth he needs to strike now while we remember and know him go sanjaya act now!

Binhi | 5/6/2007, 11:26 pm EST

Sanjaya is not tone-deaf. He is a very musical kid w/ a lot of potential. Just needs more experience performing. People should check him out singing gospel (before American Idol) at youtube.com. Search: Sanjaya’s Chariot.

k-bones(a7xrox) | 5/3/2007, 2:53 am EST

i hear a lot of talk about sanjaya.
guess he was good, well dont be bummed that he lost,if he’s good he will make it in the music indestry and every one else on this seson of american idol won’t be seen agin.justice for all if AI go’s of air

Constantine | 5/1/2007, 5:45 pm EST

Jus’ playin. I think Id lose this one…really!!!! Cause I took a good lookie at my fans on Greekspeak.. ZOW! n then I gave up poon ;)

Now where r them hot women I used to get with at!

chris | 4/29/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Amm, I guess some of you weren’t around in the thrillers days. And yes melinda is that good. I have never seen perfection derided so much. it’s clear she has been a backup singer because thats all she wanted to be. How anyone could call melinda’s last performance lifeless last week, i dont understand, she was literally channel God. I’m not religeous, but I was impressed.

UnlikeU | 4/28/2007, 2:22 am EST

I don’t understand all of you people, I guess it is in our blood as Americans to root for the underdog too succeed. I don’t believe for one second that Sanjaya is the best on American Idol, yes I believe he played a smart game, but after his second time onstage he turned into a snooze-fest. If it wasn’t for Simon insulting him and his hair he would have been gone a long time ago.

I don’t understand all of you folks that keep saying you almost fell asleep during this weeks Idol, most of the show was all of the starving kids in Africa and the displaced kids in New Orleans. I personally wanted to cry during the whole show, the last thing on my mind was boring SANJAYA. I don’t mean to offend, but I believe that the American Idol should have the look AND be able to SING!!!!

Sharry | 4/27/2007, 6:49 pm EST

I will stand in Ace’s line anytime!! There is a real man with a real body and a real heart!

I still can’t believe all these people here love Sanjaya–I am so grossed out!!!

Jun E. | 4/27/2007, 3:50 am EST

Right on Nancy. After Sanjaya, it has been “American Idle.”

denis | 4/27/2007, 1:59 am EST

sanjaya I loved you more after American Idol. you have proved to us all that you are genius and a true entertainer. Media loves you, women are crazy about you. What else do you need in this world. You are an overnight celebrity and we like men. You are not a normal guy Sanjaya. you are you with a huge first name (SANJAYA) don’t ever waste it.

janet | 4/27/2007, 1:50 am EST

This is a note to all hit music producers. Please sign sanjaya. We can’t wait for his album to come out. He is a hit with the sex appear. The kid is just seventeen but he makes us women of thirty years old sit down and watch him and go clazy. you have to give up for Sanjaya. Kiddo don’t worry you are a star and you will go far. you have a very big group of funs but hurry Sanjaya, we need to see you back again performing. you will make it.

staci | 4/26/2007, 11:19 pm EST

this years show is NOTHING without Sanjaya. he made the show and i feel like he was robbed. we all know AI switched the votes around. Lakisha should have gone home.

cindy | 4/26/2007, 6:22 pm EST

I believe Sanjaya was kicked off right before the Idol Gives Back because they wanted attention to focus on the charity aspect not on Americas favorite entertainer! Everyone would have been talking about him after the show and not the “gives back.” I too am a mother in my 40’s that has fallen in love with Sanjaya. He is an inspiration, and I find his voice soothing and very beautiful. I am glad to hear there are others out there that surf the net looking for any information on him. I am so looking forward to his first CD.

Charlie | 4/26/2007, 5:09 pm EST

The show has lost its spark without Sanjaya and has turned into a third rate snoozefest. Far from the “real” competition beginning as Simon would like us to believe, we are being deprived of a true entertainer who America did not vote out in the first place.

Ann | 4/26/2007, 1:14 pm EST

I Love Sanjaya. He was the star of the show. I wish him the best.

Patti | 4/26/2007, 10:00 am EST

I’m amazed that people still think votes count on this show. They clearly have a “chosen one” each year. Last year, it was Daughtry…but a rocker can’t win AI, so they put him out 4th, in a shocking elimination, then market the crap out of him. Taylor and Kat probably don’t know what hit them.

This year has been BORING from the get go. The reason Sanjaya is/was such a craze is because he was the only thing worth talking about over the water cooler at work the next morning.

As for the Constantine/Ace/Sanjaya “poon” contest, I’ll get in the Constantine line, thank you. :P

DH | 4/26/2007, 8:08 am EST

“It’s the one thing that might take viewers’ minds off how much more fun they’d be having if only there were a reality TV show where Sanjaya, Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young compete to see who can pull the most post-Idol poon.”

No competition, women prefer sexy Greeks to Emo’s.

That being said, the show has snuffed it’s spark without Sanjaya.

Speaking of sparks…Go Jordin, you’re the only hope for this show now.

joanie | 4/26/2007, 7:16 am EST

I have to agree with all the comments. I missed Sanjaya, too and watched the ballgame instead. I did switch back and forth now and then and caught the most boring off key performances possible and had to listen to the lies of the judges as they praised these awful performances. IMO, Lakisha was probably the best with a good voice, but obviously is next on their hit list, so will be the next to go as they don’t want her competing with their chosen ones, the lifeless Melinda and the screaming Jordin. Hard to believe that from all the people that auditioned, this was the best they could find. The scary Phil/Nosferatu is till there and the package of personality called Sanjaya is gone? Something is wrong somewhere. OTOH, there is no doubt in my mind that Sanjaya will be a star. As Jennifer Hudson (also humiliated by the judges) said, this show is a stepping stone. It is a miracle that people who are so dumb make so much money.

Nimi | 4/26/2007, 5:42 am EST

American Idol has become really boring without Sanjaya.

I am absolutely sure they just booted him as they keep repeating ‘Real competition began today’

Sanjaya is the real American Idol… he has all the qualities… To be the best singer, he needs a little vocal training… I liked the way he sings… I am waiting for his first Music CD…

Have been watching Sanjaya on media rounds and I think he is a good sport and a very positive kid… Even the anchors love him…

Way to go Sanjaya…

hoffmann | 4/26/2007, 3:14 am EST

Attention JENNY ELISCU:

If there’s any truth in what Jeff (see 20th comment above), who posted 4/25/07, 2:02pm EST,has written, that’s a HUGE story that someone should follow up. It says that Sanjaya did NOT get the lowest number of votes!

Jeff posted he got his info’ from Ricky Hoggard, who alledgedly has inside info’ AND has seen the paperwork proving that Sanjaya did NOT receive the lowest amount of votes.

Is there anyway you could find out if that’s, indeed, true?

Fanjaya Forever
P.S. Jeff, thanks for posting.

Constantine | 4/26/2007, 12:24 am EST

seriously, dude, no contest
;)

Hi | 4/25/2007, 11:38 pm EST

I thought Sanjaya rocked. I never watched AI before Sanjaya, and I probably won’t watch it now that he’s gone. He’s very striking looking and it’s not just his hair - he has a beautiful face, and nice smile too. I hope he gets his own TV show.

Caryl | 4/25/2007, 11:00 pm EST

I do not think anyone can really judge Sanjaya’s singing as he was never given the chance to develop after being compared to Elvis and the Beatles from his affect on the audience members.

Can anyone be expected to reach their goal - develop confidence and skill - when they are under constant attack -maliciously hateful at that - especially by those who have the power to actually make or break you.
Mega super stars like Jennifer Lopez and Tony Bennet both clearly said he was a good singer although this was not fully aired until the final moments after the cut.

Could anyone - caucasian or other -be expected to win a national talent competition with wide spread vicious and cruel statements repeatedly being aired, written, and printed as too new stories on every media format throughout America every single day - gathering widespread momentum as more media and individuals jumped on the bandwagon including the usually tasteful, CNN Showbiz Tonight.

The fact Sanjaya continued to withstand the month long abuse from the media, the show, and America is truly amazing!!! And he is only 17 years old.

Can you think of anyone in the history of America who has come under the daily hateful scrutiny of this country like Sanjaya and ever survived?

Name anybody - any star - ever.

I cannot think of any other idol candidate who has had to endure this ongoing cruel treatment week after week in the 4 years I have been a viewer. This was not a fair competition. It took immense courage to continue to face America week after week admist an all encompassing direct hate campaign against oneself.

His confidence was never expected to shine through.

Sharry | 4/25/2007, 10:10 pm EST

Eww, How can anyone have a crush on Sanjaya?? That scares me!! Thank God he is gone and my ears can heal and my mind can hopefully erase those awful hairdos!! In a mediocre season, he just made things so much worse!!! Bring back Season 5!!!

lyn | 4/25/2007, 8:02 pm EST

Could’t believe the 4/25 post from Terii! I could have written it myself I would say “ditto, ditto, ditto”. I’m enthralled by the kid - I’m a mom with a 23 and 25 year old, a high school teacher, and I find Sanjaya refreshing - and think he has the talent to last. He has “it” and I just love him! I wish him well, and do the google thing often to see articles about his road to becoming a real idol. Hubby had Idol on last night - I wasn’t interested. Sanjaya’s gone, and there just isn’t the thrill anymore. I miss him!

Terri | 4/25/2007, 6:52 pm EST

I had to laugh when i read another comment by another “Teri” who said she loved Sanjaya and was a middle aged woman, not a teeny bopper, because I’ve written that very thing before on other post comments! Sanjaya has stolen my heart. I actually have a crush on this kid! There is no one out there like him! He is very special and i too look up any new information on him every day on the computer. He is who he is, I just hope all this fame never changes the light he has inside. From the moment i saw him and his sister audition, i knew he’d be the one I was going to support. I also believe somehow that the voting was rigged and overturned by the judges. I swear Sanjaya has sang just as good or even better than a few of the ones left. I can’t believe the awful things people said about them. One word - jealousy! He is a star, an idol over any of them. Yeah, he came in 7th place, but he will make it bigger than all of them put together! You watch!

Wildwood Flower | 4/25/2007, 6:27 pm EST

AI is a huge bore without Sanjaya. I’m watching tonight to see Bono, but after that don’t plan on wasting my time until the finale when he triumphantly returns. Oh well, at least I don’t have to DVR Countdown any more. Olbermann for president!

becky | 4/25/2007, 6:26 pm EST

I did not watch the ‘post- Sanjaya’ AI - don’t intend to either. He was the only reason I tuned and voted, yes, for the first time since the inception of AI- I’ve all the previous seasons.
He was fantastic! I miss him so…
Now I just try to catch up on any / all news on him. He’s such a sweetheart!

Jon | 4/25/2007, 5:38 pm EST

“Blake Lewis — whose two modes are limited to white b-boy and bargain basement Morrissey — sang “Imagine” so poorly”

His singing was fine. I think it’s more that this blog just doesn’t care for him and never will. He could have put more emotion into the song, but the singing was fine. The Sanjaya comment gives off the suggestion of someone who is telling a joke a few months too late.

rosalie | 4/25/2007, 5:19 pm EST

I miss Sanjaya. This show is boring without him. I almost fell asleep last night while watching Idol. The contestants this season are so boring. They have no personality. Sanjaya, love him or hate him, was the only one with any *spark* in him. He made me laugh and smile, and everyone in my office was talking about him the next day.

The show just isn’t the same without him.

They need to cast more interesting people next season.

Christian | 4/25/2007, 4:56 pm EST

Blake’s getting boring. I mean, after I realized that the beat-boxing wouldn’t last long, I figured that his time on Idol wouldn’t either.

teri | 4/25/2007, 3:52 pm EST

I did not watch either. sanjaya was gone. I too google anything about sanjaya. He is fun and cheerful and I am a middle aged woman, not some teeny bopper, but he was the only reason to watch. it is called “american IDOL”- not “American Singer”- cannot stand Jordin. blecch.

Lynne | 4/25/2007, 3:49 pm EST

I will not be interested in watching AI until Sanjaya returns for the finale, he was the show for me the rest are way too boring!

Rhonda | 4/25/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Oh how I miss Sanjaya!!!!
After Chris and Blake BOTH slaughtered songs by the greatest of all rockers, AND the judges praised this excrement, I had to turn it off.
Looks like idol BLEW IT big time this season.
Sanjaya–the only REAL “it” factor this season was booted off in scandelous manner.
Of course, we have to remember, “Slimon” had never even heard of Free Bird when a contestant sang it last year.
Nuff said about his skill in determining America’s next big “star”.
Looks like Sanjaya is already a superstar.
He is #1 “Most Beautiful” male right now in ABC/People mag’s 50 most Beautiful People for 2007.
HE IS 11 of the list right now of Time Mag’s “Most Influential People of 2007.
The kid is the Golden Goose.
I can’t wait for his first CD, music video, or his next interview, tv appearance etc.
Give us less excerement/idol and more Sanjaya
It’s sanjaya’s universe now babay!!!

Manny | 4/25/2007, 3:40 pm EST

I didn’t watch…and not going to. All I keep doing is google for any news about Sanjaya.

Manny

Jay | 4/25/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Dean - have you even watched? I think they are doing a fairly good job of spreading the funds across all fronts… here and there.

While I don’t think it is all that and a bag of chips as they would have you believe… I still think that it is a great move and a lot of people will benefit from this show, including American Idol and the sponsors.

“Dean | 4/25/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Whule American Idol gives back is a noble cause,it is a shame that the main focus is on Africa, and not on the people out here in America that could really use the help. “

Nancy | 4/25/2007, 3:10 pm EST

I do miss Sanjaya on Idle. He was the star of the show. I did not watch last night, did not vote, nor will watch it until the finale when Sanjaya is back on. Am I boycotting the show? No. Sanjaya was my only reason to watch the show. He made the show fun and entertaining. I like Sanjaya for every reason out there. All the contestants are nice and I wish them well, but for me the show is boring. Simon has boring taste and I don’t get a kick out of hearing him talk out of his arse. I don’t want my kids to grow up thinking it’s okay to make fun of or humiliate people.

Morgan | 4/25/2007, 3:04 pm EST

Hey Jeff-
You seriosly think that Sanjaya is bigger than Michal Jackson ever was in his heyday?! Are you freaking kidding me?! Err, no way dude. Back when MJ was undenyably a black man, he was pretty much the baddest mutherfucker on the planet with an incredible scope of musical genius and talent. Then, unfortunatly, well, you’ve got the MJ of today. But Sanjaya won’t EVER be even close to the same LEAGUE of 70-80’s “I’m a badass black man” MJ. Good game though.

dakota | 4/25/2007, 2:53 pm EST

I MISS SANJINA SO MUCH.SHE WAS SO HOT!!!!!!

Dean | 4/25/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Whule American Idol gives back is a noble cause,it is a shame that the main focus is on Africa, and not on the people out here in America that could really use the help.

“It’s the one thing that might take viewers’ minds off how much more fun they’d be having if only there were a reality TV show where Sanjaya, Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young compete to see who can pull the most post-Idol poon. ”

Only if Justin Guarini can be the host of the show and “King Pimp Daddy.”

Jeff | 4/25/2007, 2:02 pm EST

Sanjaya was not the lowest vote getter. He was 5th out of 7th. So he should still be there. Simon put him off. This is documented at idolforums.com by “Ricky Hoggard” who accurately posts spoilers and has inside information. He even saw the paperwork on it.

Idol can do this because they have put in the credits that they have to right to throw away any votes they consider inappropriate.

Antonella and Sanjaya were the stars, but Simon wants to have divas who sing the high notes. sanjaya can actually sing 12 and half steps, unlike Blake who only can sing 9 and half steps. America is looking for a real idol, and Simon is looking for a singer.

Sanjaya is going to make more than 15 million already. Every day he gets more famous than Michael Jackson ever was in his hayday.

The only one to stop that is sanjaya himself, who takes his “I’m just a normal boy” to far, and has yet to embrace his stardom.

They only made one exit video this week which was Lakisha, so you can figure they plan to kick her off. (She is that fat girl in the picture.) I actually thought she was the best singer tonight. She was great. but ironically they only want to see if she is a good copy of Fantasia.

I think American Idol will be off the air in 2 or 3 years. They aren’t embracing the idol quest of america, they are at odds with the public now.

So naturally its boring, and some of it is distasteful and irreverent. Actually its a big fraud on the American Public.

Hey | 4/25/2007, 12:52 pm EST

The girl in the above picture has a lot of blubber on her. She’s on the wrong reality show. She should try Biggest Loser. Her ass has it’s own congressman.

Sanjaya | 4/25/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Daka daka daka.

Marty P. | 4/25/2007, 12:43 pm EST

I told all you weenieheads that Sonjaya was better than Bob Dylan!! Once again, I am proved right !! Thank You !

Trimlette | 4/25/2007, 12:42 pm EST

Possibly the worst season ever with bunch of over-rated singers. Until yestserday melinda was a back up singer. Suddenly she became unparallelled? Paula shut your drunken mouth. Sanjaya was the live wire there. Rest of them were like wax dolls. I didn’t even watch fully yday.

Martin | 4/25/2007, 12:30 pm EST

The distinct lack of comments following this article is testament to how little America cares.

American Idol is on the nose and past it’s use-by date.

Heed | 4/25/2007, 12:28 pm EST

“A very special” is straight out of jump the shark lexicon, although it can be argued that AI jumped the shark long before last night. I can’t figure out what was worse, the unbelievably boring performances or Simon and Ryan standing in a pile of garbage talking about how horrible Africa is (yes, we have landfills in the US too.) Sanjaya, love him or hate him, was the only interesting thing worth watching this season.

taylor | 4/25/2007, 11:55 am EST

Yeah, sad to say but the show was pretty dull without Sanjaya.

I kept thinking, “I wonder what song Sanjaya would have chosen, and what would he have done with his hair?”
