- Do you think you can sing like/look like/impersonate Aretha Franklin? Your chance to prove it is coming up. Auditions for the musical based on Ms. Franklin’s life will be held May 1-3 in the Detroit area (where else?) The 65-year-old icon will personally help select the performers.
- An advertisement that invites you to “Shoot the Rapper” to win free ring tones — appearing among other places on MySpace pages of Virginia Tech students — is coming under fire in the wake of the school’s tragedy. Those who are outraged say they want media to set higher standards for their ad content.
- A new, authorized biography of Roger Daltrey, Behind Daltrey’s Eyes, is coming out…eventually. Author Jalanne Barnes began the project in 1976 but it was scrapped in 1987 because of Pete Townshend’s resistance, Barnes says. “Years ago, when Pete Townshend discovered I was writing a biography about Roger Daltrey, he told me a book about the Who’s lead singer could only be written in one of two ways: a fluff piece from a groupie or a hard-nosed expose that would make Townshend look like a tyrant. He could see no other outcome to such an endeavor,” Barnes has written. But now, apparently, Townshend’s stance has changed and the project is moving forward.

- Scary Spice has named her kid Murphy Brown. Seriously. Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown recently gave birth to a daughter, the father of whom may or may not be Eddie Murphy, and she named the child Angel Iris Murphy Brown.
- Carrie Underwood is involved in “very casual,” definitively un-boyfriend/girlfriend-ish relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Classic.
