i don’t remember seeing half these songs in abundance in the weekend list.. hmmm

Jeff | 4/23/2007, 6:50 pm EST

Dude, with all due respect to Weezer, they are NOT stoner friendly. How on earth is getting stoned to Pinkerton going to mellow you out? Seriously…

still shining... | 4/23/2007, 6:52 pm EST

the fact that there are parts 1 through 5 alone speak volumes about how much shine on you crazy diamond will please the drug induced. Long live floyd.

ASTRAASTRANOMICS | 4/23/2007, 6:53 pm EST

3-6 MAFIA I GOTTA STAY HIGH.

furry freak brother | 4/23/2007, 6:56 pm EST

hey, that’s a pretty awesome list, RS.

I’m actually impressed

Ryan | 4/23/2007, 7:07 pm EST

I don’t see Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or I Am The Walrus, but a pretty decent list.

chinaski | 4/23/2007, 7:12 pm EST

i maybe mistaken but there was a band with a great part of their songs being about getting high. SUBLIME!

T. Rex | 4/23/2007, 7:20 pm EST

wtf where is comfortably numb, the whole dark side of the moon album, are you experienced, whole lotta love, dazed and confused, lucy in the sky with diamonds, or i am the walrus?

Thom Perry and The Hitbreakers | 4/23/2007, 7:25 pm EST

Free Fall’n – TP&HB
Walk for me! – Aerosmyth

Do you realize??? – The Flaming Lips

glennardskynnard | 4/23/2007, 8:36 pm EST

What’s happening here? No Bob Marley?

Louie | 4/23/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Haha, With all due respect to the Decemberists, what are they doing on the 4/20 playlist with NO BOB!…and no Sublime. Phhsh or are we just not counting those two because it would be unfair

floydian | 4/23/2007, 8:46 pm EST

i agree dont no how comfortably numb got left out but still at the top of the list is Pink Floyd

BS | 4/23/2007, 8:51 pm EST

What the fuck? The first song isn’t even spelled right. It’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” It pertained to one person, Syd Barrett. As for the rest of the list there are much better songs to get high to than this mostly radio airplay bullshit mentioned.

DIEGO | 4/23/2007, 8:54 pm EST

WHERE’S BOB?

Joe | 4/23/2007, 8:55 pm EST

I see a lack of Prince.

Mikey T | 4/23/2007, 8:57 pm EST

come on! “Car Thief” by the Beastie Boys…

Before my Time | 4/23/2007, 8:58 pm EST

Foghat? WTF?

Bonzo | 4/23/2007, 9:00 pm EST

I always loved the sound of Low Rider by War when I was F’d up.

Fyodor Dostoevsky | 4/23/2007, 9:09 pm EST

love the list but to echo the rest…No Bob Marley? or Sublime?

Ryan J | 4/23/2007, 9:22 pm EST

Yeah…I gotta agree with a lot of people here. Sublime and Bob are musts for the reef list. I can name so many off the top of my head by both artists/groups that are great to toke to (i.e. “garden grove,” “jailhouse,” “one love,” “badfish”). But also, how about a song by the Mars Volta?? A modern day Pink Floyd, or even a darkhorse candidate like 311 (”who’s got the herb?”/”champagne” anybody?)? Even some bone thugs would work.

Alex | 4/23/2007, 9:22 pm EST

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Outer Space is a bit of weird choice for Rolling Stone. Probably one of my favorite songs of all time though.

rob | 4/23/2007, 9:23 pm EST

ever heard of the grateful dead?

alphabet aerobics – blackalicious

Coxy | 4/23/2007, 9:29 pm EST

I wanna get high..cypres hill.

lik roper | 4/23/2007, 9:38 pm EST

it was the spring of 1967 and my cousin came to visit with her hippy boyfriend in a big rainbow -colored step-side van…

they had blue jeans, bare feet, looked like shaggy hair monsters and just happened to be on their way to san francisco for the summer of love…

i was forever changed by this brief encounter, and as soon as my dad let me, i grew my hair long (and i still walk bare footed when weather permits)…

years later i learned my cousins’ soon to be hippy husband was a member of the merry pranksters, and they both knew bill graham!?

(by the way; they didn’t tell me about ganja, i found out about that on my own later on)

listphomaniac | 4/23/2007, 9:52 pm EST

i know “the pot” by tool isn’t really about marijuana, but the simple fact that it’s named so and has such a wicked groove for a metal song makes it deserving. or else “third eye” ought to be on the list.

also, “la mer” by nine inch nails will take you for a ride, especially when next on the playlist is “into the void.”

but i do agree, bob and sublime need to be added. i also don’t see how “burn one down” by ben harper can be left off. and substitute “you don’t know how it feels” or “mary jane’s last dance” for the tom petty pick.

baconsartre | 4/23/2007, 9:56 pm EST

am i the only one that fucking hates pink floyd?

Chris | 4/23/2007, 10:31 pm EST

“Revolution 9″ by The Beatles should definetly be on that list.

scooby doo | 4/23/2007, 10:38 pm EST

roxy music…maybe, but that’s not the song; at all

Odys Coltrane | 4/23/2007, 10:51 pm EST

Hey morons, it’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” as in singular.

lesterjung | 4/23/2007, 11:02 pm EST

Fresh Air -Quicksilver Messenger Service
Too Much Too Dream – Electric Prunes…Miles Davis…John Coltane
Lester Young…
Whoever made your list was high!!!

loveexplosion | 4/23/2007, 11:07 pm EST

purple haze was about a dream, not drugs, maybe drug induced, you are ridiculous for putting it on here

Metal | 4/23/2007, 11:12 pm EST

your right loveexplosion, it was about a dream. but that doesnt mean that it doesnt sound good to get high to.

ak spencer | 4/23/2007, 11:16 pm EST

tomorrow never knows, by the beatles come on

fsk | 4/23/2007, 11:16 pm EST

i am bewildered at the fact that these were left off of the list…

the beatles – strawberry fields
radiohead – paranoid android
cypress hill – hits from the bong
bob marley – jammin’

i mean cmon

fsk | 4/23/2007, 11:20 pm EST

oh and just a personal favorite…

soundgarden – tighter and tighter

geoff tray | 4/23/2007, 11:50 pm EST

i’ll just echo the cypress hill votes

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 12:11 am EST

Mr Farmer – The Seeds

Breanne | 4/24/2007, 12:12 am EST

“Wooden Ships” by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Actually, anything off of their first album should make the list. The harmonies are that much more fantastic when blitzed…

Pepe Le Pen | 4/24/2007, 12:23 am EST

top 10 best stoner movies:
Dazed and Confused
2001: A Space Odyssey
Fantastic Planet
Lord of the Rings
Fantasia
Forbidden Zone
The Matrix
Yellow Submarine
Friday
Alice in Wonderland

top stoner concert dvds:
Pink Floyd at Pompeii
Monterey Pop
The Show (1994)
Portishead: Live in NYC
Led Zeppelin
Love: Forever Changes Live
The Grateful Dead Movie
The Up in Smoke Tour
Cream at Royal Albert Hall(2005)
DJ Shadow: Live

Too many to mention. The Doors movie and The Wall were too flawed in parts, tho great animation on The Wall(live concert is better). any more?

Lucifer Sam | 4/24/2007, 12:26 am EST

What about the rest of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”? Parts 6-9 is just as fantastic. Its best to listen to the entire album anyway.

O'C | 4/24/2007, 12:34 am EST

Sweet Emotion, baby! Turn it up!

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 12:38 am EST

light my fire…its in the name!

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 12:38 am EST

everything in its right place is a briliant choice. As for Roxy Music, yes, but no way in hell More than this, top stoner songs not makeout songs, However The Bogus Man would have made a great choice. Another wierd choice from my pot days would have to be Bitches Brew

little girl | 4/24/2007, 12:40 am EST

M’kay, I know it’s really cliche, but seriously, no…
Greatful Dead?
Stevie Ray Vaugn?
BOB MARLEY!?!
But in all fairness, I actually WAS listening to ‘Young Folks’ during a chillout session on Friday… :D !!!

VeryNice | 4/24/2007, 12:41 am EST

How can you leave Comfortably Numb? And no Grateful dead songs? Ridiculous!!

Brian | 4/24/2007, 12:42 am EST

And sabbath, no sabbath? Christ. Along with the obvious Sweet Leaf and Snowblind, practically anything off of the first 4 albulms. Also, in the sabbath realm, no other stoner metal? Christ, Sleep’s Dopesmoker and Electric Wizard are the practical definition of pot music.

S.Stimpy | 4/24/2007, 12:46 am EST

Okay, for a while I was gonna cut you slack for having zero integrity. Now you’re coping out to stoners? Please, leave Spiritualized, Radiohead and (ESPECIALLY) Sonic Youth out of this. Now go find some pseudo-retro band like Wolfmother to give a handjob too, it seems like that’s all you’re good at these days

bodi | 4/24/2007, 12:47 am EST

what about Mr. Brownstone? Oh, guess we’re just talkin bout weed.

Tracy | 4/24/2007, 12:55 am EST

Where is the Sweet Leaf? Also, why no Sublime? Summer time and the livin’s easy!

gloria | 4/24/2007, 1:07 am EST

what?! how on EARTH is “blue monday” a stoner song? thats ridiculous. i would never categorize any new order song as a pot song. ugh. and the Traffic version of “Feelin Alright” is far superior to Joe Cocker’s. I’m not a Modest Mouse fan, but I do not see how “Float On” fits in here either.

gloria | 4/24/2007, 1:09 am EST

Also, I’d expect as well-known a magazine as yours to know when to use “its” as opposed to “it’s”..gosh, I’d be happy to work as an editor.

Travis | 4/24/2007, 1:14 am EST

wow. . . NO BOB MARLEY. ‘Tis a sin you’ve committed. I couldn’t care less about what you have on there. But not having the guy who made it cool to smoke in there is ridiculous.

Thadd | 4/24/2007, 1:24 am EST

My fav bands to listen to while hitting the bong:

System of a down
Nirvana
Nine Inch Nails

I’m a big pumpkin fan, but 1979 works only for rainy days, last call at the bar and coming off an e buzz.

piple | 4/24/2007, 1:27 am EST

agree blue monday is a strange choice, but loved my summertime pick getting on! and loved the lcd soundsystem, i was about to say that too but it makes me wanna DANCE!

erik | 4/24/2007, 1:30 am EST

that list is pretty bunk. where’s tool or sabbath? at least Floyd is number one.
and nothing but a g thang? come on next episode is a way better dre song to blaze too.

Jeff | 4/24/2007, 1:30 am EST

RATED R

SONGS FOR THE DEAF

The first half of 311’s SOUNDSYSTEM

S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself and Morning View

“Feel The Void” and “Castaway” from Jerry Cantrell’s Degradation Trip double album.

ed | 4/24/2007, 1:31 am EST

i’ll “pass” on this list…

to many deserving entries aren’t on the list and too many undeserving are on the list.

-my morning jacket
-allman brothers
-marley
-the doors
-sublime
-flaming lips
-beck…
more than half th eexistong list shouldn’t even be up there

ed | 4/24/2007, 1:33 am EST

most importantly, where is
“Burn one Down” by Ben Harper…

ridiculous…

BushCrimeFamily | 4/24/2007, 2:27 am EST

Who gets high anymore?

Adam | 4/24/2007, 2:49 am EST

Dr. Dre and Modest Mouse nowhere near deserve to be on this list, unlike a multitude of neglected 60s and 70s acts like the Moody Blues, Donovan, and even more Pink Floyd.

benperry.net | 4/24/2007, 5:11 am EST

no Marley, no stoner rock (Kyuss, et al), no ambient (Eno, etc.), no Japanese noise (Acid Mothers Temple, Boredoms, etc.), … scandalous… this list was clearly not compiled by any true heads

Ellaye | 4/24/2007, 5:31 am EST

Muse – “Falling Away With You”

dan | 4/24/2007, 5:45 am EST

What a dumb list. Who writes this crap? Not up to RS standards. Pot is overrated anyway – Trey Anastasio recognizes that (no pot in his car when he was busted). And Inca Roads by Zappa should be on the list.

tbird48 | 4/24/2007, 5:46 am EST

maybe I’m old, but ….
CCR: Born on the bayou was my favourute

Vox populi | 4/24/2007, 6:39 am EST

Doesn’t get better than The Doors’ ‘Break on through (to the other side)’

yob | 4/24/2007, 6:46 am EST

Cypris hill?

me | 4/24/2007, 7:47 am EST

how can they not add sweet leaf by sabbath? c’mon!

Sanchez | 4/24/2007, 8:09 am EST

No Peter Tosh and no Marley…Travesty.
Reggae and weed must really have no connection.

wayne | 4/24/2007, 8:29 am EST

no can , the congos or lee perry W.T.F ???

floydfan88 | 4/24/2007, 8:43 am EST

any and all pink floyd!!! not just soycd 1-5. u need time, brain damage, money, comfortably numb, pigs(three different ones) and every other song they did!! i fart in your general direction rs. your mother was a hampster and your father smelt of elderberries!!!

whazzzup | 4/24/2007, 8:44 am EST

once again RS eff’s it up all together. Only one hip-hop song made the list of gettin high???? and Banger n mash is right hardly any of these songs were posted here over the weekend!

Jeff | 4/24/2007, 8:45 am EST

Sabbath!!! Sweat Leaf…Snowblind c’mon!!

Scott | 4/24/2007, 9:11 am EST

No Marley and no Bone Thugs in Harmony is a saddening thing. No Cypress Hill? The list is brutal!

Cosmic Mindblower | 4/24/2007, 9:28 am EST

“Adam” is an idiot. How can he say 60’s and 70’s bands are neglected? And Blue Monday is a ecstacy song. As for reggae, Lee Scratch Perry should be before Marley, he is the founder of dub reggae. Marley is alright but only for tourists and fratboys. Real Rastas know whats up. And only the first 4 Sabbath albums people? Sabotage owns all of you! It didn’t end with Volume 4.

SWEE | 4/24/2007, 9:28 am EST

I try not to join the haters on these blogs, but are you serious? No Marley?

johnny honestly | 4/24/2007, 9:35 am EST

do the people that make these lists even think about the songs they’ve selected. its just a list of obvious “stoner” music from the ’60s with little bits of hippster shit sprinkled in so people will think Rolling Stone still has some cultural impact.

bean | 4/24/2007, 9:35 am EST

dudes, in addition to no marley, there is no real reggae representation at all. I know this list is about the songs to listen to WHEN stoned but as far as songs about pot go, there are some great ones from the likes of Niyorah (I Grade Records, St. Croix, Virgin Islands) Richie Spice, Pressure (I Grade) the Midnite Band (I Grade Records) and more. Its all underground, and its all about herb smokin too. That’s why dem legalize the herb for me and you.

45 | 4/24/2007, 11:18 am EST

Where is Mary Jane by Rick James?

kandyaxlr | 4/24/2007, 11:28 am EST

hi baconsatre
Dont feel left out.you have company

New1ivermark | 4/24/2007, 11:35 am EST

True gettin’ high tunes is almost anything PRE-1976. Black Sabbath,Doors,Cream{Clapton},C CR,Hendrix,Floyd, and a newer mix of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Anything else is pure “Hydroponic”!!!!!!!!

Carl | 4/24/2007, 11:40 am EST

Surely we can find something positive about all this negative feedback. Look how many awesome songs that have been listed that are great to get mashed to!!!

bub | 4/24/2007, 12:42 pm EST

where’s earache my eye by cheech and chong? old dredg and any tool is great. or what about zappa? or zz top? lay the ears on back….

Joey | 4/24/2007, 1:19 pm EST

That is a pretty damn good list except it is missing “Sweet Leaf” by Sabbath, or any Tool.

Beeze | 4/24/2007, 1:45 pm EST

Snooooooooop!

He’s got a handful of good ones.

Admit I | 4/24/2007, 2:07 pm EST

Jane Says – Jane’s Addiction

Connor | 4/24/2007, 2:08 pm EST

c’mon, where’s Tales of Brave Ulysses? Some Cream?!!?

TheFloyd | 4/24/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Still no mention of Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help..”, maybe “Crimson & Clover”, and for cripe’s sake “FREEBIRD”????
‘Tis a sin about no Bob Marley / Dylan, Sublime, and most certainly the WRONG Tom Petty song!

nec | 4/24/2007, 2:24 pm EST

I second “Bitches Brew,” by Miles Davis.

TheLibertine | 4/24/2007, 2:59 pm EST

where’s Afroman?

begreen | 4/24/2007, 3:04 pm EST

how can you leave out a band named for a day-long weed binge?

me | 4/24/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Who made up this list, they must have smoked to much to think straight…

Mike | 4/24/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Where’s “Burn One Down” by Ben Harper?

DrewMasters | 4/24/2007, 3:31 pm EST

RUSH “Passage To Bangkok”

C.B. | 4/24/2007, 3:44 pm EST

jill hives | 4/24/2007, 3:46 pm EST

no beatles tracks? for shame!
‘rain’ always enhances a fine pot buzz, sillies.

bob | 4/24/2007, 3:48 pm EST

MEAT LOAF

bob | 4/24/2007, 3:49 pm EST

“Venus in Furs” Velvet Underground. Done.

Jack Nicholson | 4/24/2007, 3:57 pm EST

I didn’t read all of the comments, but I’ve seen no mention of “Don’t Bogart Me”. Not only is it a great stoner song, it’s a great stoner scene in the movie Easy Rider.

“Don’t bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me”

Andy Ampersand | 4/24/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Don’t forget Neil Young’s “Roll Another Number (for the Road)”…

Sammy | 4/24/2007, 4:03 pm EST

“Columbia” by Oasis

Lumpy | 4/24/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Breeders “Cannonball” – No.1, duh.

Hole “Boys On The Radio”

Tom Petty “You Don’t Know How It Feels”

Black Crows “Wiser Time”

Queens Of The Stone Age “Little Sister”

Lumpy | 4/24/2007, 4:07 pm EST

oh yeah: Beck “Beercan”, duh!

buzzard | 4/24/2007, 4:19 pm EST

BOB MARLEY left of the list, he got to be turning in his grave having been left of this list. wtf ever RS

Tyler | 4/24/2007, 5:04 pm EST

Horrible List! Are you kidding me? Wheres all the songs that these people actually listen to?

j | 4/24/2007, 5:05 pm EST

larry carlson

aphex twin

ween

zappa

j | 4/24/2007, 5:07 pm EST

ween

aphex twin

larry carlson

Ric | 4/24/2007, 5:09 pm EST

Yeah some of these songs seem so random…

whoa! | 4/24/2007, 5:52 pm EST

how is it that no one put this on this list:

smoke two joints – Sublime

eric | 4/24/2007, 6:14 pm EST

To not put sublime in this rediculous catagory, is offensive to stoners everywhere.

davethomas81 | 4/24/2007, 6:18 pm EST

i don’t see any captain beefheart or wendy carlos. the list is nonsense!

davethomas81 | 4/24/2007, 6:22 pm EST

mothers of invention’s “we’re only in it for the money”
that’s all you need

davethomas81 | 4/24/2007, 6:25 pm EST

any barrett era pink floyd is necessary

markus | 4/24/2007, 6:54 pm EST

I can’t argue with Pink Floyd, but where the hell is The Grateful Dead, and “Burn One Down” by Ben Harper. also, 1979 is a poor choice for the Pumpkins, It should have been the entire Siamese Dream album as opposed to a song from Mellon Collie.

>>>> | 4/24/2007, 7:27 pm EST

“Blue jay way” the Beatles,
“dogs” Pink floyd,
and “dominion” Danzig

>>>> | 4/24/2007, 7:29 pm EST

anything off”Earth,sun and moon” album,
by Love and rockets.

Another Bob of the 60's | 4/24/2007, 7:36 pm EST

“The Barbarian” and many more by ELP?
“Awaken” by Yes?
Most of The Moody Blues? Most of the 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit. “Special Situations” by Jo Jo Gunne
The entire last side of Steppenwolf Live being, “Hey Lawdy Mama”, “Magic Carpet Ride”, “The Pusher” and most significantly of all that had inspired entire generations of bikers, hell raisers and just flat out party assed animals “Born to be Wild”

Man, partying with you stiffs would be a real drag.

Another Bob of the 60's | 4/24/2007, 7:42 pm EST

..and one more thing. When we were cruising and had the radio on back then and Airplane or the Doors came on we would start flipping the channels to look for something good like the Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc. I laugh now when I see those bands idolized. We thought they were crap.

Angel | 4/24/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Yeah, “Sweet Leaf” is the best, but the Modern Lovers “I’m Straight” is a nicely ironic song to get stoned to.

Tami | 4/24/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Okay, you guys gotta go back to school, preferably junior high!
Aerosmith – Toys in the Attic
Jane’s Addiction
Lynard Skynard
Sublime
Allman Bros
Little Feat – Waiting for Columbus
“I got stoned and I missed it” I can’t remember the band name…

Sarah | 4/24/2007, 9:42 pm EST

what the fuck…this list is lacking alot what about Mary Jane-Rick James

jrk | 4/24/2007, 9:50 pm EST

get a life all of you

max | 4/24/2007, 10:14 pm EST

first off CB is definately messed up and jrk is,well a jerk. anyways i definately think we need some bob marley and sublime on there. Glad to see pink floyd, but comfortably numb needs to be on there. overall the list isnt to bad, should have been to fifty because some key bands were left out and some average ones put in, but thats my opinion and im sure that some people think the list is good.

peace out

Mark | 4/24/2007, 10:20 pm EST

No Cypress Hill? If there’s anything those guys deserve…

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 10:29 pm EST

All I have to say is listen to Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs by Oceansize.

babybird | 4/24/2007, 10:35 pm EST

Don’t Forget…

Ben Harper – Pass One Down

And all of Van Morrison – Astral Weeks

Hunter | 4/24/2007, 10:55 pm EST

‘A Day in the Life’ – The Beatles

‘Desolation Row’ – Bob Dylan

‘Sleight of Hand’ – Pearl Jam

Tim | 4/25/2007, 12:14 am EST

What about Peter Tosh – Legalize It?! Or DMV by Primus?!

SleepMiser | 4/25/2007, 1:08 am EST

Are these songs ABOUT drugs or songs that are good to listen too stoned?
Most of these tunes would leave me anoyed if I was stoned and listening to them.

A good stoner oldie would be Traffic – Low Spark of Hi-heel boys or Hendrix – Rainy Day\Voodoo Child. Something hypnotic.
In the modern world maybe some ambient drone, trip hop, etc.

J-Rizz | 4/25/2007, 1:58 am EST

Props for putting Candle by Sonic Youth on this list. That song is ridiculous stoned–I ended up rewinding the noise solo 10 times the first time I listened to it high.

joe | 4/25/2007, 2:19 am EST

terrible list with 2 exceptions: pink floyd and radiohead.

make a new list, top 15, and all you need is Kid A followed by Wish You Were Here.

…or simply Echoes.

Dazed | 4/25/2007, 2:33 am EST

HellO!! Just because a Beatle song is 2 min long doesn’t mean it wont trip you out. Listen To any song from Sgt Peppers and if you arent tripped out than you must not be smoking anything worth smokin.!?!

Trip | 4/25/2007, 2:34 am EST

Noir Desir is a french band that is great for stoned listening.

International_che | 4/25/2007, 3:25 am EST

what about DJ Shadow “What does you mind look like”…try playing that during a populated session and observe as the room goes silent. Pink floyd Time?…Wish you were here?…Afroman…you hate to admit it now but try it when you’re zoned out…other than that good list.

thomas | 4/25/2007, 3:50 am EST

when stoned..its difficult not to zone out on just about anything…

all in all not a bad list.

tina | 4/25/2007, 4:32 am EST

minus the bear

Noshuss | 4/25/2007, 5:54 am EST

Wow. used to read RS when i was a kid. Stopped because it got too poppy and commercial..seemed to me it started to get awat from its roots. Havent even seen a RS in years. Accidentally clicked on something ended up here. Thought, hells, i’ll bite, and give a read. Seems i not been missing much. Alot o good tunes missing out here.Im outy, prob never look at a RS again. Now as for bands. I cant even start. too many holes in this dam to plug. Lates

im only sleeping | 4/25/2007, 6:44 am EST

Not a good list “nothinng but a G thang?” Cmon guys….Float on??? Its to poppy to listen while stonned. Make a new list with some better minds behind it.

steve miler | 4/25/2007, 7:59 am EST

anything from the space cowboy himself would be awesome to get high too but the new nin album year zero is great to smoke a bowl to its like a sonic nuclear war and you just trip out big times trent reznor is king of cool

mojoman | 4/25/2007, 8:33 am EST

Rush-Xanadu; just add Maui, instant paradise
Hendrix-Spanish Castle Magic; trippy fun
Steely Dan-Aja; unbelievable drum solo
Zeppelin-Tangerine; yes it’s short, but maybe their mellowest tune ever
Jefferson Airplane-Martha; great tune…guess you had to be there!

Scruggs | 4/25/2007, 8:39 am EST

Purple haz is great, but it actually wasn’t about purple kush, Hendrix read a sci-fi novel and it talked about a purple mist emitted from a spaceship when its doors opened. what about 1983……(A merman I should turn to Be)

What about the Doors?

Led Zeppelin III ?

Allman Brothers?

Tosh or Toots?

And dub by Agustus Pablo or King Tubby?

Kraftwerk?

Jame | 4/25/2007, 9:05 am EST

Got some really good songs on here. Shine On deserves the #1 but you’ve gotta listen to the WHOLE song. No Quarter is a great call to. I would have choosen a different song by Hendrix. Sure Purple Haze seems to go along with the theme but there are better like Third Stone From the Sun or Bold as Love.

Paulo Roberto | 4/25/2007, 9:07 am EST

A Lista esta incompleta.
Cade Aerosmith?

Jame | 4/25/2007, 9:08 am EST

O and anything instrumental should just be automatically considered. The Fire in Our Throats Well Beckon the Thaw by Pelican is perfect.

KiwiBrownn | 4/25/2007, 9:48 am EST

How do you leave off Bob Marley? This list must have been compiled by people who’ve only read about smoking pot in books.

KiwiBrownn | 4/25/2007, 9:49 am EST

How do you leave off Bob Marley? Whoever compiled this list must have only read about smoking pot in books or something.

le-bon | 4/25/2007, 10:18 am EST

not sure about radiohead, that might be a VERY bad experience! i’d like to make an honourable mention for “i wanna be adored” by stone roses

Martin | 4/25/2007, 10:20 am EST

the question is what kind of reefer for each song?

Rasputin | 4/25/2007, 10:33 am EST

OK, so you wanted to make a list of songs to get stoned to or songs abour reefer? Or songs that contain an ambiguous refrence to being high? Or songs that mention the word high? Basically what I’m getting at is this list is crap. Not to blame RS, they didn’t make it.

How are you going to have a list of songs to smoke pot to and not include Bob Marley, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan or any other type of folk and hippie rock? Why is there no reggae on here? Where’s toots? Also, no root rock? Give me some Credence or Allman Brothers Band. This list is horrible. Yeah, nothing I like better than after a long day siting down, twisting one up, and putting on some Primal Scream. Give me a break.

bird | 4/25/2007, 10:56 am EST

well purple haze should be #1

jack johnson-never leave lonely alone

Ray-dizzle | 4/25/2007, 11:12 am EST

How can you possibly leave out Sublime and Bob Marley on this list!!!!!???

Jesse McGee | 4/25/2007, 11:14 am EST

What about Ben Harper “Burn One Down” of the Live from Mars album. Only Purple Haze ranks above in my opinion

matt | 4/25/2007, 11:37 am EST

Roberto I Petzer | 4/25/2007, 11:40 am EST

hey folks, what about “I want you (she’s so heavy” by the beatles
all the stones albums from “let it bleed” to “exile…”
Van orrison’s “Astral weeks” & “Moondance”; all nick drake, all Jimi, White Room, by cream, Ramble Tamble by CCR, Layla by derek & The Dominoes, Devil Got My Woman by Skip James

kevin c | 4/25/2007, 12:04 pm EST

Probably the worst list you guys (or your readers) have ever compiled. And that’s saying something.

Me | 4/25/2007, 12:45 pm EST

Last time I wrote a long list of albums to listen to while stoned. However, there is a song no one (I believe) has mentioned, and that is Jimi Hendrix’s “1983 (a Merman I Should Turn to Be)” from Electric Ladyland. Fantastic!!!

Art | 4/25/2007, 1:02 pm EST

That genuinely is a very very poor list.

mjmd | 4/25/2007, 1:36 pm EST

Death – Voice of the Soul

By far my all time favourite, and I highly reccomend it to everyone. I guarantee that if the people that submitted those songs had heard this song, it would easily make the top 5. Give it a listen!!!!!

mjmd | 4/25/2007, 1:39 pm EST

death – voice of the soul
Air – Alpha Beta Gaga

both go so well with a puff

Gary | 4/25/2007, 1:47 pm EST

How can Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet or Bob Dylan not be on this list! “Everybody must get stoned!”

Django | 4/25/2007, 1:59 pm EST

Damn these peeps are upset at the list. I have to agree but the list itself is irrelevant because ’stoned’ music listening is different for every person some want something fast some want something more smooth and slow. It depends on the person and….Oh yes the pot!

saad | 4/25/2007, 3:15 pm EST

u guys bitching over nothing…it’s just a list…nothing definitive…chill…go smoke some budha…

Huge Miss! Where in the hell is Cypress Hill ???

cbdunn19 | 4/25/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Over half the list has nothing to do with stoners or stoner music…poor choice…

Franko Tanko | 4/25/2007, 4:12 pm EST

You cannot envoy your drift on these tunes!! Why not have Elton John and Celine Dion while you’re at it!

HAHA | 4/25/2007, 4:20 pm EST

Lame… The only amusing thing about this article was the sentence “Thanks to all of you who celebrated the 4/20 holiday weekend properly by helping us compile this awesome list of the best songs to play while getting high” 420 a holiday now? I guess you got to try to justify a whole day of smoking weed and wasting away life.

Egypt Steve | 4/25/2007, 4:27 pm EST

Blue-jay Way
Dazed and Confused
Legalize Marijuana
Voodoo Chile
Suzie-Q
Revolution No. 9
I forgot the rest, man.

Adam | 4/25/2007, 4:28 pm EST

“Laughing” by David Crosby, on “If Only I Could Remember My Name”, is the closest sonic equivalent to getting high…

Kingo | 4/25/2007, 4:30 pm EST

No Cortez the Killer?

Get real.

Egypt Steve | 4/25/2007, 4:31 pm EST

Oh, yeah, “I am the Walrus.” I don’t care if John Lennon did deny it, I think the last bits were “Smoke pot, Smoke pot, everybody smoke pot.”

Satan | 4/25/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Play the entire Fear of Music album by the Talking Heads..Gene Siskel and I really enjoy it after a bong hit….

Fool on The Laptop | 4/25/2007, 5:37 pm EST

Roll up for the Mystery Tour!!! Thats an invitation.. The Magical Mystery Tour Is dying to take you Away. Satisfaction guaranteed!!

Tyler | 4/25/2007, 5:50 pm EST

What a strange list. Obviously the editors were stoned off their asses when they compiled it. “Dude, forget Bob Marley, we need Peter Bjorn and John!”

Raggamuffs | 4/25/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Lackin’ scope…come on. ” legalize It” Peter Tosh…..”Kaya” Bob Marley…..da reggae genre, who represents ?

boogerton | 4/25/2007, 6:47 pm EST

I don’t indulge in the 420. However, if I did, I would surely be cool enough to do it while listening to Ozium by Monster Magnet off the Spine of God album. As the record jacket states “It’s a satanic drug thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

Matt | 4/25/2007, 6:57 pm EST

Strange list! My tried and tested include:

Tomorrow Never Knows – The Beatles
The End – The Doors
The Great Gig in the Sky – Pink Floyd
A Forest – The Cure
Kashmir – Led Zep
Down by the River – Neil Young
Concrete Jungle – Bob Marley
Planet Clare – B52s
Voodoo Chile (long version) – Hendrix
Fools Gold – Stone Roses

crowww | 4/25/2007, 7:03 pm EST

Half those songs aren’t even about pot but rather psychedelics. God, what the hell has happened. Didn’t this magazine used to be even remotely connected to counterculture? What know-nothing corporate garbage.

Scruggs | 4/25/2007, 7:05 pm EST

King Crimson?

Well RS screwed up, real bad too, but I think this list is irrelevant since everyone has a different taste in music, obviously most of us are quite pissed Sublime, Marley, Dylan and others are not on this list. Since we have the freedom to think for ourselves we can never agree on one list that satisfies everyone. I think the only real way to do this properly is to make a list for each genre.

Will | 4/25/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Are You Experienced?/Third Stone from the Sun/ Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix
Comfortably Numb/Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd
Kinky Reggae/Concrete Jungle-Bob Marley
Legalize It-Peter Tosh
No Quarter/Dazed and Confused-Led Zeppelin
Sweet Emotion-Aerosmith
Burn One Down-Ben Harper
Don’t Fear the Reaper-Blue Oyster Cult
Frankenstein-Edgar Winter
Slow Ride-Foghat
Badfish-Sublime

b ut most importantly, The End-The Doors
the best song, listen to it, try it, you won’t be disappointed

there are a million other hendrix songs that are ten times better for smoking

? | 4/25/2007, 7:59 pm EST

ya this is a pretty bad list…screwed up big time

GT | 4/25/2007, 8:04 pm EST

The messed-up thing about this list is that they’re including songs that have some reference to burning – but the songs themselves do NOTHING to enhance the experience! C’mon, you can’t groove down and space out to Purple Haze! Dag

Lou | 4/25/2007, 8:32 pm EST

I realize that it is impossible to make everybody happy, but Sublime should have had at least one song on the list.

degüello | 4/25/2007, 8:41 pm EST

No ZZ Top?

Ridiculous.

nodak boy | 4/25/2007, 8:49 pm EST

Oh, man, you never even mentioned, you know, that one song by that dude, … you know, that goes, like, dah dah dum DUM DUM, dah dah, like. Remember that?

Aussie Jazz | 4/25/2007, 9:03 pm EST

Howdy there
I can’t believe you didnt add Ben Harper’s “Burn One Down” in your list!.To see this song performed live is to see an instant reefer cloud eminate from the best of mosh pits!
Its a modern day reefer classic

Stoned Leo | 4/25/2007, 9:20 pm EST

Crime of the Century – Supertramp. Muy cool friends!! but you forgot to include it in the list

Clasico | 4/25/2007, 9:23 pm EST

Magic carpet ride – Steppenwolf

Phokus | 4/25/2007, 9:34 pm EST

Underwater – Slackdaddy.
In The Light – Led Zeppelin.
Coming in from the Cold – Bob Marley.
Soul Sacrifice – Santana.
Dark Star (pick any one) – Grateful Dead.
David Bowie – Phish.
We’ve Only Just Begun – Vince Guraldi.
So yeah, basically anything with either a Mellotron or Fender Rhodes and some fuzzy guitars.

Kaya | 4/25/2007, 11:22 pm EST

Uh.. Bob Marley anyone? You couldn’t find room for even one Bob Marley song on a list of the 25 greatest POT SMOKING SONGS??!!?

OhSnap! | 4/25/2007, 11:32 pm EST

I notice no Beck, no Gomez, no Bob Marley, no Black Crowes, no Doors… Santana’s ‘Oye Como Va’ also has a nice feel to it while burning as does Otis Redding.

At least I learned that these posters have better taste in music than those responsible for the RS list and I am looking forward to listening some new bands due to these suggestions.

Don | 4/25/2007, 11:42 pm EST

No ‘Mary Jane’ by Rick James….

Marty | 4/25/2007, 11:42 pm EST

Where’s The Strawberry Alarm CLock?

clo | 4/26/2007, 12:19 am EST

“float on” by modest mouse should not be on the list. Modest mouse has many songs more suited for smoking reefer. Dramamine by modest mouse would be a much better choice.

M. Bouffant | 4/26/2007, 12:25 am EST

Sun Ra: almost any tune…Pharoah Sanders: “The Creator Has a Master Plan”
Someone mentioned “We’re Only in It for the Money,” by the Mothers; one of my friends listened to the whole thing wearing headphones after some fine (early ’70s) hash & was seriously freaked out…
In general, any dub goes fine with da ‘erb.
Maybe next year you can do the 420 best songs to enjoy, that should provide enough space.
P. S. The comment form stinks! 3 sliders (and one of them hidden half the time) when there should only be one and no preview button!

yeah “float on” is possibly the worst modest mouse song you could pick. “gravity rides everything,” “paper thin walls,” and “it always rains on a picnic” are much better choices.

how can you not have the dead or marley? wilco would’ve been nice too, but not having the dead is inexcusable. “eyes of the world.” enough said.

Peace

peteroniell | 4/27/2007, 1:53 pm EST

this list is ridiculous. usually your lists are decent but im guess this list was compiled by a bunch of coorprate douche bags who don’t even know whats its like to be green.

let’s see. um sublime maybe? any bob marley?? any doors, riders on the storm in paticular. and what are you thinking excluding the grateful dead, quite possibly the greatest stoner band of all time. you guys should know that considering your roots are similair to theirs. and maybe some blind melon wouldn’t hurt either.

Klaatu | 4/27/2007, 1:56 pm EST

It is very foolish to use marijuana, especially for adolescents. It has well-documented effects on developing minds. The teens that I have known who used it are adults now, and are having trouble coping with depression and anxiety. There are always cofactors, but weed has lost its innocence. The THC content has doubled since the 80’s, leading people to actually require rehabilitaton in order to quit using it. So, while this article, may seem cute, and even nostalgic for some of us, I took it upon myself to point out these facts.

Sorry for the buzz kill…

Chuck | 4/27/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Klaatu said
“It is very foolish to use marijuana.”

Incorrect sir, I would however, have accepted…

“The misuse of marijuana is very foolish”.

Well I wonder where all u B.Marley and deadheads were when he list was being made? I think that listening to all that reggae is depressing when I just want a lil’ break and a toke. Music is such a personal thing I just find it kinda idiotic to see so manynegative comments, obviously some people need to a few more hits.

Doug | 4/28/2007, 6:00 pm EST

this list is pointless, misguided and sickening. getting high on anything is a waste of time, money, brain power, relationship, and life in general. it’s unfortunate that some people assiciate something as great as music with something as grotesque as drugs and the use/abuse thereof. personally, if i were an artis with a song on this list, i’d be offended. get real, get a life, get a hobby, and stop getting high.

zephyr | 4/28/2007, 11:50 pm EST

WELL… I managed to turn this hole thing into something positive! Being a teenager born too late (that is, not in the hippy days), there are so many songs you guys have posted that I didn’t know about… I downloaded at least 100. No joke. Thanks everyone!

dude, this list blows. the doors, bob marley, the beatles, 311, and phish should have all been up there. this list was totally put together by the trendiest people in the place to appeal to other trendy people. not a well thought out list at all

rhett | 5/7/2007, 6:29 pm EST

mary jane, rick :: sweet leaf, sabbath. as has been pointed out, any such list without these tracks on it is wholly inadequate and under-thought. for shame… and where’s long haired country boy by charlie d?

ASHLEY BLAIR | 5/7/2007, 10:06 pm EST

Perfect songs for this are:

Planet Claire B’52’s

Rapture Blondie

Rapture Riders 2006 Blondie and The Doors
-This song will *@%* you up when you listen to it, really cool mash up, especially high, the original is better on it’s own, but hearing deborah harry rapping into a cool relaxed jim morrison is priceless.

BTW this mash u was top ten in Amsterdam last year, where the producer made it, what more do you need to say people….

Tool’s version of “No Quarter”

Frank Zappa “Peaches En Regalia”

anything by Squarepusher

doggy | 5/20/2007, 6:56 am EST

hmm… just judging from sog titles, it seems like these are missing from the list:

Sublime “Two Joints”
Cypress Hill “Hits From the Bong”
Nine Inch Nails “Ten Miles High”
Coolio – “I’m In Love With You Mary Jane”
Weezer – “Hash Pipe”

(I’m sure some of these have been mentioned, but oh well)

some random guy | 5/26/2007, 6:40 pm EST

If I could make a few suggestions myself ladies and gentlemen,

Some of my personal faves while baked out of my mind or tripping:

Led Zeppelin – No Quarter, Tangerine, Going to California, Stairway to Heaven, When the Levee Breaks, Dancing Days, In the Light

Jimi Hendrix – Pretty much everything, but some highlights include Bold As Love, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Third Stone From the Sun. If you can get some of Jimi’s live stuff, thats even better

The Doors – The End, Indian Summer, Riders on the Storm, The Ghost Song, and People Are Strange

The Beatles – Lucy in the Sky, A Day in the life, Strawberry Fields, Rocky Raccoon, Tomorrow Never Knows, i am the walrus

some sick bob marley – No woman no cry, Could You Be Loved, Get Up Stand up, Jammin, Lick Samba, Kaya, Redemption Song, Survival, Africa Unite, and Easy Skanking

Dire Straits – Money for Nothing: is an effin awesome song while high

Slightly Stoopid – Never heard of them? Listen to the songs “Killin Me deep inside” “Officer” “Wiseman” “Collieman” and “Runnin With a Gun” while stoned and youl’ll dig em big time.

finally, PINK FLOYD:
Shine on You Crazy Diamond (all of it), Hey You, Time, Fearless, Wish you Were here, us and them, comfortably numb, see emily play, learning to fly, Dogs, Sheep, Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive, Speak to Me/Breathe, Have a Cigar, Echoes, and every other song they’ve ever made – they’re the best

Some more bands I’d suggest that people may know very well or not at all would be Caravan, Hawkwind, Sublime (everything), Velvet Undergound (Venus in Furs, Heroin, the gift especially), The Red Hot Chili Peppers (especially their newest album), Tom Petty, The Shins, Modest Mouse (their older stuff), The Byrds, The Moody Blues, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the fish, Blind Melon, Moe., Syd Barret, The yardbirds, any kind of Clapton, Tool, The who, crosby stills and nash, neil young, otis redding, bob dylan, frank zappa, black sabbath, allman bros, iggy pop, blue oyster cult, Radiohead, Husker Du, Cake, Rage against the machine, Deltron 3030, Sigur Ros, Ben Harper, Talking Heads, peter tosh, atmosphere, Humble Soul, Status Quo, 311, the stone roses, the flaming lips, Phish, and Jethro Tull, all depending on what you like, but those are just some goodies off the top of my head…

as far as albums go,

Pretty much any Beatles, Floyd, Hendrix, or Doors album…

Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Magesties Request

The Small Faces – Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake

Beach Boys – Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile

The Monkees – Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd.

The Grateful Dead – Anthem of the Sun

The Kinks – Somewhere else (I believe its called)

That’s all I can really think of for now… those are my suggestions for some of the best stoned/tripping music from personal experience and word on the street… later

Blayne | 7/5/2007, 11:01 pm EST

You have to like some 311, Kottonmouth Kings, Muck Sticky, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Or some Acid Bath

The list is bullshit. As far as I can tell more than 75% of the people who made the list or wrote about it have not ever heard the Dead or Phish or SCI or PANIC and therefore don’t have the right to give any input to the list. I am happy to see Sublime being mentioned a lot. When it comes down to my favorite song to put on when sparking one up is Speak to me/Breathe by Floyd, anyone who has seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas knows why. But other than that anything by the above bands and the Beatles trump everything else. Next time you smoke put on Dark Star from any particular show and it will change your life.

the whole Dazed And Confused soundtrack, thats the best movie to watch when your gettin blitzed

Bobby | 7/7/2008, 5:52 pm EST

That list was garbage put together by people who clearly do not smoke weed. As a rock fan I can admit that the best high music usually comes from rap and hip-hop.

“Hits from the Bong” by Cypress Hill.

“Today was a Good Day” by Ice Cube.

Literally anything from Bone Thugs, Snoop Dogg, or Dr. Dre. Pop in any CD they made during the 90s and it will enhance the reefer experience.

Other favorites of mine are Smoke Two Joints by Sublime, This Joint by Slightly Stoopid, Champagne Supernova by Oasis, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, Paper Planes by M.I.A, and Butterfly by Crazy Town

What a lame, lame list. It shows it wasn’t put together by a toker but by some fat guy in a suit sitting in an office somewhere…

My picks, off the top of my head:

I Got High by Afro Man
I Got 5 On It – The Loonies
Mary Janey – Rick James
High Hopes – Pink Floyd (Any Pink Floyd will do, really)
Any album by ENIGMA (Give them a chance…they are all a trip)

Jeff | 8/21/2008, 12:05 am EST

Such a joke man

white rabbit is about LSD for one but besides that…

RBL Posse-Bammer Weed (old school rap)

BRiAN | 9/21/2008, 1:35 pm EST

Can’t believe you overlooked “Let Me Roll It” from band on the run. Yes, it is Paul McCartney, but somehow it is more evocative of pot paranoia than any other song on this list.

John Frusciante | 3/20/2009, 2:00 pm EST

It’s a sad day in hell when people waste listening to music ABOUT smoking reefer, instead of listening to music that Enhances the trip.
Might i Help out you poor saps.

Walls – John Frusciante/Josh Klinghoffer

At Your Enemies – John Frusciante/Josh Klinghoffer

Addition – Ataxia

Ayreon – The Dream Sequencer

Richard | 3/31/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Kay theres a guy way up there named mitch and i totally agree with him

You Cant have a “Reefer Gladness” playlist and not include the gods

You need
-Greatful Dead
-Beatles
-Rolling Stones
-Niel Young

in my opinion whoever made this list should truely be ashamed

Jeff | 4/3/2009, 3:03 pm EST

Got some great tunes from all the posts here, thanks guys!

Here are some of my favorites

Bob Marley – one of the best artists this world has seen. Besides the classics, check out these lesser known yet equally as good songs:
-”Mellow Mood” (the world would be a better place if everybody listened to this song, or preferably got high and listened to it)
-”One Drop”
- “Sun is Shining”
- every song on the Exodus album is perfect.

Slightly Stoopid – “Fat Spliffs”, “Fruits ‘Legalize Them’”

Grateful Dead is the shit “Scarlet Begonias/ Fire on the Mountain”, “Ripple/Brokedown Palace”, AHHH

Perpetual Groove – “Andromeda”

Hendrix, Phish, Biggie, Red & Meth.. littler known shit, try Animal Collective’s new album, Ratatat- “Cherry”…

alright that should be enough enjoy, one love

stokeneveryday | 8/27/2009, 2:09 am EST

dude this list is way to short, you should have at least 100 songs. artists I toke to, doors, the who, cream, wu tang clan, slightly stoopid, outkast, pinkfloyd, phish, beatles, bob marley, tupac, nas, t.i., bone thugs, sublime, 311, incubus, blink 182, foghat, cypress hill, lil wayne, 3-6 mafia, eagles, war, black eyed peas, and so many more. I listed more artist then they did songs, and that is what makes this list bullshit. my favorite tokin experience was watchin the dark side of oz, so trippy! all you do is syncronize the dark side of the moon with the wizard of oz and smoke as much as you can.

So whoever the idiot is who put Wilco should be on here is ABSOLUELY ridiculous. And the reason there is no Bob Marley is because only every other song he sang was about weed. Now maybe if someone said Peter Tosh or Jimmy Cliff…that wouldeve been more fitting. But the reason that there isnt any reggae is because that reggae in and of itsself is about bud.

Ang | 10/30/2009, 11:39 pm EST

Rainy Day Women #12&35 by the one and only Bob Dylan. His songs make you think in that wonderful existential way when your ripped :)
