Lunchtime Poll: Be a Good Muse

4/23/07, 11:52 am EST

Steven Malkmus

If you are a good rock fan you’ve fantasized once or 700 times about what it might be like to have your favorite rock star write a song about you. You’d meet them at a show or like at the Laundromat or one of those other totally improbably normal spots people meet in romantic comedies. You would pretend that you don’t recognize them, they would ask you out for a cup of coffee and the next thing you know you will have moved this person to write one of those emotionally revealing pop hits the inspiration for which legions of crazed fans would speculate about in chat rooms. Rock cupid is on the case. All you have to do is name the rock star and it’s a done deal. Who do you choose to inspire and what is the song they write about you called?

I would inspire Tom Waits to write a song about his redhead. Something in vein of “downtown train”, a melancholy song of loss and longing.

On a side note, WHY are there so many songs about Mary Jane’s?

I’d have say “Stay” by Lisa Loeb. She has this warm yet sophisticated glow to her which quickly draws your attention.Since 1994 Lisa always had that sort of significance.Still feelin’ the solid black frames too.

Actually I’ve already had this happen, kind of. You know that whole Beatles walrus thing. Everyone wanted to know who the walrus was. Well it was me. I was at the same halloween party as the Beatles once strangly dressed as a walrus and I beat out lennon in a best costume contest when he was dressed as a rabbit. Really strange huh. The hard part is no one ever believes me and the fact that all my pictures of the party got ruined in my house that burned down (which is actually motivation for Hendrix Red House)doesn’t really help my case.
