“In a Gadda Da Vida” – Iron Butterfly

“Somebody To Love” – Jefferson Airplane

“Break On Through” – The Doors and thee whole of that first thirteen track greatest hits comp.

“Mama Kin” and the Rocks album (aerosmith)

The key is not to get TOO spacy with your music selection when your smoking. If I were tripping, I might dig in deeper with some some My Bloody Valentine, Sgt. Pepper, Satanic Majesty’s Request. But if your smoking a joint, keep it rocking and straight forward with a twist.

Nikkidoo | 4/20/2007, 1:13 pm EST

I remember smoking and hearing “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis and thinking that it was a pretty trippy song for the 90’s.

Phillip | 4/20/2007, 1:17 pm EST

YEM – Phish

Bangers-N-Mash | 4/20/2007, 1:18 pm EST

Omg… I don’t ever want to think of Sublime and smoking ever again.. it’s just gotten too cliched.

I will however, say that there are three albums I have listened to while stoned that became other worldly….

1. Electric Ladyland – spacey blues does the trick

2. The Basement Tapes – for some reason Goin To Alcopulco is really weird when stone

3. Zaireeka – for obvious reasons

Chief | 4/20/2007, 2:21 pm EST

There are two types of Stoner Music. Songs that are about smoking weed and songs that are inspired by it. I personally prefer the latter. The Number One album to slip into your cd player following cannabis consumption is Modest Mouse’s This is a Long Drive For Someone with Nothing to Think About. Moon and Antarctica is good too. These albums shine because they are very laconic and really gel with the stoner persona. Dig?

Paul is Dead | 4/20/2007, 2:45 pm EST

The entire Abbey Road album by the Beatles goes great with a big joint and a nice set of headphones. Dig the abrupt ending of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” as it transitions into the soft intro of”Here Comes the Sun.” It’s the most jarring/beautiful change in song and texture I’ve ever heard.

Taj Mahal’s greatest hits is pretty great, too…

Kirby Densen | 4/20/2007, 3:34 pm EST

Anything sounds amazing stoned, but if I had to pick 3 (in no order)

Pink Floyd – Meddle
Michael Jackson – Thriller
Miles Davis – Bitches Brew

I suppose inparticularly off of Meddle it would be One of these Days

Jame | 4/20/2007, 3:35 pm EST

Almost anything from the 60s. Zeppelin, later Beatles, Bob Dylan, Floyd. Pelican is great. So many choices. Friends by Zeppelin is really good.

that_dariachick | 4/20/2007, 3:44 pm EST

“Any Colour You Like” by Pink Floyd on Dark Side. I know it’s a weird song pick, but it’s so much fun to pick up all the layers of the synthesizer when you’re blown off your lid.

And of course, “Who’s Got the Herb” by 311 pretty much speaks for itself.

Also:

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Lookin’ Out My Back Door (though I’m pretty sure John Fogerty was on something a little heavier to see happy creatures dancing on the lawn)

The Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane

I’m voting for these two songs more because they’re way higher quality than 90% of the other weed anthems, regardless of how appropriate they are.

Kash | 4/20/2007, 4:38 pm EST

It all depends on what you like. Personally, Tool’s “The Grudge”, “Caring is Creepy” by the Shins and anything off of Pink Floyd’s “Meddle” is fine with me.

Hi: Here’s another way to get high. Plans were announced today in the Windy City for the construction of the 150 story or 2,000 feet tall “Chicago Spire”. If approved, it will be the tallest skyscraper on Earth at least until its displacement by a
160 story doozy in Dubai…I can’t say any of these have inspired any new skyscraper music
yet, but maybe some songwriter reading this will be so inspired?…In the meantime, we can surely promise any significant others that “Someday, I’ll take you to the top of the world”…unless, of course, we are afraid of heights :) ! ~JBK

Me | 4/22/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I can’t think of “songs” to listen to while stoned. Better to think in terms of albums. My favorites are:
Grateful Dead: Europe 72, Terrapin Station.
Phish: Billy Breathes, Lawn Boy, Junta.
Pink Floyd: DSOTM, Meddle, WYWH, Piper at The Gates of Dawn.
Hendrix: Electric Ladyland.
Myles Davis: Bitches Brew.
Can: Tago Mago.
Love: Forever Changes.
Spirit: 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.
Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Brodway.
Brian Eno: Taking Tiger Mountain.
Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited, Bringing it All Back Home, Blonde on Blonde.
The Beatles: Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s, White Album.
The Who: The Who Sell Out, Quadrophenia.
Small Faces: Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake.
Capt. Beefhart: Trout Mask Replica
Rolling Stones: Beggars’ Banquet, Let it Bleed.
Cream: Disraeli Gears, Wheels of Fire.
Colosseum: Valentyne Suite.
Led Zeppelin: Zoso, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffitti.
The Doors: Strange Days.
Allman Brothers: Eat a Peach, Live at Filmore.
That’s it, for now…

Shine on you crazy diamond by Pink Floyd The whole song too, not just parts.

Jame | 4/23/2007, 9:17 am EST

Pink Flod can cover any stage of being high. The initial stage can greatly be improved by Shine On. While your just sitting there San Tropez, or Fearless can just be pure bliss. And if Meddle doesn’t put you to sleep try to end it off with something slow and quiet like wish You Were Here or Us and Them. Or you could go out with a bang and listen to Great Gig and that song just slowly brings into a good sleep. Of course Pelican just works anytime.

Man, there are a lot to sort thru on this list, but I don’t think I saw Ben Harper’s “Burn One Down”. Or Michael Franti’s “Ganja Baba” (the version from ‘Songs From the Porch’) Sure they’re not as “trippy” as some of the songs, but they sure are perfect smoke songs.

For me, any Pearl Jam works. The Who.
And I recently put on the new Beck resord with a side of the creative cloud, and it kicks ass. Same thing with the Stadium Arcadium.

And there was a record I read about here in RS that is a great smoke record – Tropicalia: a Brazilian Revolution in Sound, or something like that. Great, great record to play as the spring and summer creeps in. If only we could get together with our records and joints, and play the good shit that the radio’s don’t play.
