Bright Eyes Sells Lots of Albums, New “Shrek” Tunes Likely to Amuse and More

4/18/07, 2:04 pm EST

Bright Eyes

  • Nevermind the fact that this last week was a very slow one in terms of album sales, it’s still cool that Bright Eyes scored a super high Number Four debut on the charts, moving 58,354 copies of the band’s new album Cassadaga. Congrats Conor!
  • Some potential jurors in the Phil Spector murder trial are admitting that they have preconceived prejudice against the producer. “Honestly, I think he did it,” one woman said during jury selection. “I think I’m a fair person but it would be very difficult to forget what I read.” Is she being candid or is she simply trying to avoid many months of dirty and depressing jury sequestering? Who can say.
  • Fergie’s cover of Heart’s “Barracuda” will appear on the new Shrek soundtrack, Shrek the Third, out May 15th. Other must-hear (and potentially mockable) inclusions on the soundtrack include Eddie Murphy (as Donkey) and Antonio Banderas (as Puss in Boots) on Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again).”
  • We kinda like this Bloc Party cover of Nelly Furtado’s hit “Say It Right” and we don’t even like Bloc Party very much. They should totally do an entire album filled with covers of pop songs. We’d be super into that. [via Stereogum]
  • We really like what we’ve heard of the new Courtney Love album, supposedly titled How Dirty Girls Get Clean. So we’re psyched that snippets of the songs on the album, like this version of “Pacific Coast Highway,” are starting to make their way onto the interwebs. [via ProductShopNYC]
  • Its a relief for it all that Velvet Revolver have announced a new release date for their forthcoming new album Libertad. The record was originally supposed to come out May 29th, but will now be released July 3rd. Mark those calendars!

I cringe to think Fergie is going to do a cover of Barrachuda…I wonder if she’ll use that dark and heavy guitar riff??..not a chance, probably just some stupid hip-hop beat.

Don Imus and Russel Ez J Simmons demean women all tha thyme. But then there’s people in Pop Culture like Nelly Furtado who sings about gettin “loose.” Where are all those Feminist women? Russel Simmons he’s made da doe from people on da record label call’n women ( what santa claus says.) What about women who demean themselves? Nelly got a No. 1 out of her “looseness.” Cuz she has that song bout “getting around” with many “parners.” She must be in some big lawfirm! Nelly F has a kid and no shame! Where are you OPRAH…. God of the Titans? Protector of the HUMAN RACE? Oprah why don’t you complain at NeLLY? Isn’t that a double stanard for Imus? A white dude can demean women, but Nelly has vids where she acts like a ( santa says.) Very nice… love job - TPTH

Music just isn’t what it was 20-30 years ago.

Blame payola

Blame centralized pop acts created by record companies

Blame piracy.. if you REALLY want to

Blame Apple and shitty digital music

TONY | 4/18/2007, 6:55 pm EST

#4? Big deal! Everyone goes by chart position instead of copies sold. The Beatles “Love” sold over 200,000 copies a week for a month, but happened to come out when JayZ’s latest pile did, so it got no higher than #5, and was considered a failure. Eyes sell 58,000, debuts at 4 and it’s a “super-high” debut success!! Hell, McCartney’s last album sold 66,000 the first week but debuted at #8 or 9 and also was considered a relative failure. You have a 64-year-old man outselling you and this a big deal????

deano | 4/18/2007, 5:22 pm EST

There’s no music worth a crap on the radio or on TV today. Somebody needs to come along and shake things up like Elvis in the 50s or — God forbid — Michael Jackson in the 80s.

neil s | 4/18/2007, 4:33 pm EST

Bloc Party are a great fucking band

ihateukfans | 4/18/2007, 4:32 pm EST

With album sales at all time lows, (down 28% year to date compared with last year), it’s likely these no-name no-talent indie bands will debut high. They will likely take a freefall in upcoming weeks. My prediction- BRIGHT EYES WILL TUMBLE OUT OF THE TOP 50 IN LESS THAN THREE WEEKS. MAYBE NEXT WEEK.
However, high chart position does not result in high sales. Just a few years ago 56,000 wouldn’t get an album in the top thirty. Now it’s almost #1. This is the beginning of the end for albums as we know it.

Kyle | 4/18/2007, 4:14 pm EST

It doesn’t surprise me that Bright Eyes did so well. His albums are consistently great and there was quite a hype for this one. I personally love the album; “If the Brakeman Turns My Way” and “Make a Plan to Love Me” are two of the better songs (but aren’t they all?)

ragnarok | 4/18/2007, 3:37 pm EST

cassadaga is pretty much fucking amazing.

baba o riley | 4/18/2007, 3:37 pm EST

bloc party’s first album was the bee’s knees. the second one is kinda meh.

Stoopid | 4/18/2007, 3:36 pm EST

HA!HA!HA! Bright Eyes got SLAM | 4/18/2007, 3:27 pm EST

after all the ads these asswipes are gonna be dropped from thier lable! 50,000 does not even cover the print ads!

Another crap indie band goes DOWN MF!

dpr | 4/18/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Bloc Party is amazing

abandonedstation | 4/18/2007, 3:14 pm EST

I forget, is Bright Eyes good indie emo, or bad corporate emo?

Poor Phil Spector. I mean, he’s guilty as hell, but what a shame to be judged by such a stupid jury. ‘I think I’m a fair person, but it will be very hard to forget what I read.’ Christ, lady. You’re going to hear arguments from both sides before you have to decide. It’s called new information. Try to absorb it.

Eddie and Antonio getting funky with ‘Thank You’? Sly Stone must be spinning in his grave… even though he’s not dead yet.

You like the new Courtney Love album? So that makes Bruce Willis and the RS writing staff that she is currently blowing.
(I actually feel kinda bad for that one… I guess I am human…)

The Seeker | 4/18/2007, 3:11 pm EST

Fergie’s cover of “Barracuda” has the potential to be one of the worst cover songs of all time. It could also turn out to be pretty decent, but I sincerely doubt that.

Marty P. | 4/18/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Hooray for Gene, Paul, Ace, & Peter !!! The Awesome KISS !!!

Conor Sucks | 4/18/2007, 3:01 pm EST

Except that Bloc Party’s music is actually listenable.

Paul | 4/18/2007, 2:45 pm EST

I enjoy Rolling Stone’s double standards. Fergie sucks but we’ll give her the cover anyway because she’s popular. Fall Out Boy “used” to suck until the zeitgeist decided they didn’t, so let’s give them the cover. American Idol fills pop radio with even more sewage, but let’s give them the cover. “American Idiot” was a pretentious mess, but let’s give Green Day the cover AND Billie Joe the cover both in the same year.

Scenic Anemia | 4/18/2007, 2:45 pm EST

I hate to break it to you, but, for all intents and purposes, Bloc Party IS whiny-white boy music also. Having a black frontman doesn’t change that any.

I eat drano | 4/18/2007, 2:40 pm EST

You’re a racist! I am right now in the process of getting all of your pertinent information and handing you over to the authorities!

Bright Eyes is over-rated... | 4/18/2007, 2:34 pm EST

and Bloc Party is awesome! Down with whiny-white boy music!

Grand | 4/18/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Good for Conor and Bloc Party is awesome.

Kirstie | 4/18/2007, 2:27 pm EST

Cassadaga really is an amazing album. The instrumentals are so creative. It’s music like this that you can take and make yourself fucking pertain to it. It’s sensuous. It is inevitable. This album will send you dancing just as all the others. Enjoy, kids.
