THE FORMULA: Bruce Springsteen + The Pixies – Major Label Bank Accounts
You learn a lot when you work as a bartender, but the people who benefit from slinging drinks at all hours of the night aren’t just the drunks getting their buzz on. “I’ve seen so much dark shit, man” says Billy McCarthy, singer and guitarist for the Brooklyn band Pela, who release their debut Anytown Graffiti this month. “I’ve served strippers who’ve just had men slip dollars into their thongs. I’ve served cops who’ve just come from a homicide scene. Lawyers who are cheating on their wives, doctors who have coke problems. It’s so amazing. It’s like once you walk through that door, everyone is just a heart sitting there on a stool.” These are just some of the characters who show up on Anytown Graffiti, Pela’s debut album (out this month), which paints a scrawled-on-the-bathroom-wall portrait of smalltown America. Man…you guys take the train all the way down to Brooklyn to find new bands? Wow, how mobile!
But, for reals, seems like all your “artists to watch” are from BK. I don’t know if you guys knew…but there’s a whole world outside of NYC (which is, admittedly, a world of itself). How about some shine for the left coast or flyover states, eh?

I recommend LEVY, a NYC band. It’s the best music I heard in the last year.

This band is dire. Awful. Dull. Even worse than the RS description. Horrible. Dreary. Middle of the road.

You guys are a bit harsh. I think Pela is alright from what I’ve heard so far.

If you want to cast your net quite a bit further, how about Jakarta, Indonesia’s White Shoes & The Couples Company? They recently signed with Minty Fresh Records and got picked as one of the 25 Best Bands on MySpace by this very website, in addition to being one of Allmusic.com’s “Top 25 Most Crushworthy Bands of 2006.” Of course, such titles are meaningless to some, so check them out for yourself at http://www.myspace.com/whiteshoesandt hecouplescompany . Their self-titled debut is also available on iTunes.

Hrm, the Myspace link was too long for this page. Well, you get the idea.

Pela are in fact a band who puts on an amazing live show, with a very exciting album coming out. if the songs are half as good on record as they are live, pela deserves whatever attention they may recieve

They seem like any other group of heterosexual men who get together and make music that totally ignores gay Americans. I don’t like them at all.

great band, very excited for the album.

Hey, QuasiEvil I miss the Mooney Suzuki. Do you think that they’re (RS) really paying attention to the bands/artist that ppl. are posting?
