“American Idol”: Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Sanjaya

4/18/07, 3:20 pm EST

Chris panders for votes on American IdolSanjaya, crawfish pie, me-oh-my-oh! It was Country Night on American Idol, which meant it was the night for The Sanj to get his Uncle Jesse on, wrapping a red bandanna around his forehead and wearing some kind of distressed-denim leisure suit. Jordin wore a nose ring. Melinda wore a “Southern Girl” tube top. Since this is the first Idol season without a single country singer in the coop, it makes you wonder why they bothered doing Country Night at all — it just makes you miss Sundance Head, who could have given us a little version of “I’m the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised,” or maybe Antonella Barba could have sung Trisha Yearwood’s “Down On My Knees”? One thing’s for sure: Nashville’s next superstar? Not in this crowd, since they couldn’t hack country tunes any better than they handled the Miami Sound Machine songbook last week. Sanjaya, take the wheel!

Martina McBride was this week’s guest coach; Ryan explained, “There was really only one choice,” for those of us at home wondering how many country stars said no before they got to Martina. But hey — who doesn’t love Martina? The front-runners held their own: Jordin did a swell job with Martina’s “Broken Wings,” while Melinda did fine with “Trouble Is a Woman.” Blake sounded suspiciously pseudo-Scandinavian on Ryan Adams’ “When the Stars Go Blue,” a hit for Tim McGraw, though I bet Blake was thinking of The Corrs’ version. The judges hated Lakisha’s version of “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” but maybe they were just miffed she didn’t sing “Before He Cheats” instead — it’s not only Carrie Underwood’s best hit, it’s the best hit ANY Idol alum has scored, even including Kelly C’s “Since U Been Gone.” Lakisha still sounded great, right?

Sanjaya, going his own way as usual, decided not to do a country song at all, since that would be too easy. Instead, he sang the loathsome “Something to Talk About,” maybe the smarmiest, slimiest, most soul-crushingly awful soft-rock hit of the Nineties. Forget it, Sanji — you can’t make Simon love you if he won’t. You can’t make Simon’s heart feel something it don’t. Ryan stepped in to cut off Simon’s tirade, starting another one of their delectable bitch fests, though at least Simon didn’t call Ryan “sweetheart” — Ryan hates that! True to his high-school drama roots, Ryan said, “Sometimes I think Simon hears different things because his head is so big.” Right, Ryan! And sometimes I think his head is so big because it is so full of dreams!

In fact, Sanjaya might have played his last magic trick, since he was terrible in a pretty down-to-earth way; this was run-of-the-mill terribleness compared to the epic terribleness we’ve come to expect. But man, what was up with Chris? He came on to sing a Rascall Flatts song and squealed like a pig. He defended himself to Simon with the instant-classic comeback, “Nasally is a form of singing!” It sure is, Chris. Then he lurched into a desperate vote-scrounging plea to Virginia Tech, which might have sounded halfway sincere if he didn’t save his best wishes until after he gave us his hissy-fit lecture in defense of the nasally community. Jesus, what a jerk. So is it Chris or Phil going home tonight? Hard to tell. Phil did a much better job on Keith Urban’s “Where the Blacktop Ends,” the kind of mainstream country ballad he should have been singing all along — in fact, probably his best performance. But it wasn’t the kind of thing anybody would remember an hour later, when the phone lines opened. So I’m guessing Chris’s pinchable cheeks will get him the nod from the old-lady voters, and Phil will be going home. Unless tonight is the night that Sanjayamania hits a Bonnie-Raitt-shaped wall.

american idol sucks! open your eyes people! get a real job.

Ryan | 4/18/2007, 4:03 pm EST

poop juice, Blake is queerer than a 3 dollar bill

j | 4/18/2007, 4:10 pm EST

I thought phil did a great job! chris is going home

Yep | 4/18/2007, 4:11 pm EST

Blake is openly gay. I thought everyone knew that?

Nikkidoo | 4/18/2007, 4:13 pm EST

When are they going to do showtune night so Sanjaya can wear pigtails?

susan | 4/18/2007, 4:24 pm EST

I think, of course, Sanjaya should go but will he? Who knows. If not him then diffinitely Chris. Nasally is a form of singing. Yea, when you can’t sing. I do think Simon was right about LaKisha. She’s been old and boring sounding since doing the Jennifer Holiday song. She has the singing chops though but I would put her in the bottom three tonight. Phil did a better job and should stay. Again, who knows.

fab | 4/18/2007, 4:25 pm EST

I wondered how “Country Nite” at “American Idol Round-Up” would corale!!! Sso-soo –and no big Hee-haw. Sanjaya should have paraded a rodeo-type hat w/the red bandan.a He did what he could to sing flat notes in his young male voice with the somewhat flat-noted tune –and still a great hit for female vocalist Bonnie Raitt: He still has my vote

janette | 4/18/2007, 4:25 pm EST

We love Jordin and Blake so much!

Nora | 4/18/2007, 4:35 pm EST

The second time I watched Sanjaya’s performance I realize his singing was actually good and I really like the way he handles the constant criticism and bashing he is getting from Simon and other haters. Hey in this world you are either a hater or a tolerater. Sorry, Chris and Lakisha did no better than Sanjaya. Sanjaya gets my vote for his class.

pbj | 4/18/2007, 4:43 pm EST

why in the heck would Sanjaya wear that crazy hairdo? if he cant find a decent hair dresser than just shave it all off.I mean dude its easier to have yo hair gone than to give a bad name to hair dressers around the world.YA FEEL ME NOW?

Rob | 4/18/2007, 4:47 pm EST

Sanj…. sucks big time!!!! shouldnt even be in the top 100. Really good talent is going home to accomodate these idiots voting for the wrong reasons….he couldn`t carry a tune whith a front end loader

NotASanjayaFan | 4/18/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Simon bickers about Sanjaya, yet it was the 3 judges who brought Sanjaya into the competition. So why should any of them complain? The judges should have realized that Sanjaya is talentless.

Mike | 4/18/2007, 5:09 pm EST

Come on dude….Since U Been Gone is the best song from an Idol Alum.

Not hating on Carrie Underwood…who might be in the top-5 most beautiful women in the world. No bullshit.

Outside Opinion | 4/18/2007, 5:13 pm EST

I am an AI fan from New Zealand. I have always watched AI, but this season is the best. Reason?

His name is Sanjaya.

He might not be the best, but he is the only star. Its surprising to see so many negative articles on a young man. Obviously he has a lot more class than a lot of journalists there. This is one of the only stories not focused on killing the kid. Encourage and embrace your children America, dont crush them. He’s not an embarrasment to your country, your the media on the other hand…

You may like this, you may not. Don’t worry im staying outside. I am still buying his music though and Melinda. Thats the only other name i remember.

shanana | 4/18/2007, 5:14 pm EST

we love blake and jordin!

Mario Kart | 4/18/2007, 5:15 pm EST

For every crying Avril out there who makes love to the show every week (not the anti-Sanj crew)… realize the more you swoon…err vote for Sanjaya, the greater chance the show will die.
It won’t return with Simon. It will not return without him.
Have a nice day- enjoy your lady dreams of the ponyhawked boygirl Sanjaya.

Karloff | 4/18/2007, 5:16 pm EST

Phil was good, and so were Melinda and Jordin.

The three on the chopping block should be Chris, Blake, and William Hung…uh…Sanjaya. I think Sanj earned his way off the show. Chris and Blake suck, too, so they should go in the next couple of weeks.

Marty P. | 4/18/2007, 5:44 pm EST

Sanjaya is more talented than Jerry Garcia was. Maybe that’s why the Grateful Dead sucked so bad.

Simom | 4/18/2007, 5:50 pm EST

Sanjaya all the way. He is the only reason to watch. I love you Sanjaya.

Joy | 4/18/2007, 5:56 pm EST

when will san wear a purdy hula dress he sure is purdy i thought the show as about singing? i guess not go purdy san hula…. should we call this the american airhaed contest ? anyway sanhula is purdy…. jordan ,doolittle ,blake and lakisha can sing very well if this was a snging contest… guess it is more of a hair and style constest o well so much for that…

steveo | 4/18/2007, 6:03 pm EST

i think lekisha will be the surpise exit tonight…sanjaya was certainly the worst, but that has been a running gag for weeks and he will be in the bottom 3 but not going home yet…

Kathy | 4/18/2007, 6:08 pm EST

Lakisha should not be the surprise exit tonight – she is too good to be sent home. Sanjaya is a joke – straight up and one I’m tired of.

ladysky | 4/18/2007, 6:08 pm EST

in a perfect world, American Idol is about a young talented singer getting a chance to be heard and succeed with thier talent. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world and every season I have watched AI struggle to not become just a popularity contest. So far I have felt all the winners were talented and although at times I felt others deserved to win more, I still felt it “worked”. This season I am not so sure. Sanjaya can not sing. Sure he can sing better than me, but then so can 99.9% of the population. if he stays one more week then the show has lost the battle as far as I am concerned and no longer a vehicle for new, young, singing TALENT, but just another joke of a tv show…

Tom | 4/18/2007, 6:14 pm EST

the comments here in favor of Sanjaya are all a joke. it’s impossible to like this no-talent freak. he brings nothing to the table and gets more nauseating every week. i pray he gets the boot, preferably in the mouth, tonight.

faith | 4/18/2007, 6:15 pm EST

Sanjaya only appeals to the crowd who a) has not gone through puberty or b) wishes they have not yet gone through puberty. COME ON PEOPLE…take this seriously and vote him OFF!

Mario Kart | 4/18/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Big Brother has more cred. right now.
Good on ya

Mikey | 4/18/2007, 6:20 pm EST

I think is time to get serious, like Simon said…
“We are trying to get the best talented American Idol”
That has Talent and pizzazz, like most of the other left in the competition.

Sanjaya is a great kid and has proven to take all the negatives well so fare, BUT..
Enough is enough to ridicule him by keeping him in this competition, is not fare to the other contestants that are voted out better then him week after week, he should quit on is own. (I thing he is in to all the future American Idol touring events anyway) … “So this is not going to go away soon thanks to all the Jackasses that keeps on voting him that have no class (by ridiculing him) or understanding of music and or talent”

reg laing | 4/18/2007, 6:22 pm EST

i hear sanjaya has a nice cock.

michelle | 4/18/2007, 6:27 pm EST

i think sanjaya should get voted of tonight

Patsy | 4/18/2007, 6:28 pm EST

I flat don’t care about American Idol anymore.

Joe C. | 4/18/2007, 6:35 pm EST

SANJAYA IS THE BEST.
Who is going to buy any possible records that anyone else but Sanjaya puts out? No one will want to see Jordan, Melinda, Blake, or any of the other yahoos on tour — except for Sanjaya. He’s the ONLY person who makes this ridiculous show interesting. If he goes, so will a ton of viewers. Simon won’t get his royalties unless Sanjaya wins….he’s the only one who will sell records. HAIL TO SANJAYA, the NEXT AMERICAN IDOL! GO SANJAYA! We’re routing for you.

SANJAYA WILL WIN | 4/18/2007, 6:38 pm EST

I totally agree. Sanjaya needs to stay for sure. I don’t understand who will watch this show if he’s gone.
The rest of the crowd is soooooo BORING….yawn. Jordan is a pill. Melinda is sweet but dull. Blake, Chris and Phil have no personality and neither does Lakisha.

KEEP THE FAITH SANJAYA! Looking forward to seeing you perform next week.

Manny | 4/18/2007, 6:43 pm EST

Sanjaya is awesome… There is this medocrity loving crowd that looks for the same same same ole crap. All they know is Prom night singing. You know the types.

You think.. Nina Simone would please these folks? hell no.

Who gives a crap about Country Western anyway.. I’d rather take a nice dose of Bluegrass any day over the Nashville country crap.

I like sanjaya even more BECAUSE HE IS NOT COUNTRY.

Manny

Reagan F. | 4/18/2007, 6:43 pm EST

I wish that Sanjaya would get voted off. No one that i know(i know a lot of people) likes him.He has no talent. I would never buy his records i would probably never whatch him on T.V. and i would never go to a concert of his, same with every one i know. If Sanjaya Wins i will quit watching American Idol.

Jon Mac | 4/18/2007, 6:47 pm EST

Sanjaya is the Man! People need to stop hating and realize that this is a stupid REALITY show! Get a life and take your negative energy elsewhere. Let people have a good time. Everybody likes someone different, and Who the hell are you to Judge Sanjaya differently from any other contestant on that show. Your not God! You don’t make the frickin rules! People will vote who they want to vote for! The contestant who makes them feel the best, who is exciting, and brings a smile to their faces.. And whichever contestant makes that happen, through singing or making people laugh, is the one who will win! Bottom line.

Reagan F. | 4/18/2007, 6:47 pm EST

I wish that Sanjaya would get voted off. No one likes well everyone i know (i know a lot of people) dosent NOT like him. He has no talent. I would never but one of his records and i would never see him in concert or on T.V. That is the same for every one I know. If Sanjaya wins I will quit watching American Idol cuz this is getting ridiculus.

Barry | 4/18/2007, 7:01 pm EST

I about lost my mind when they referred to it as “Tim McGraw’s” song. Just shows how clueless the show is.

Problem? | 4/18/2007, 7:09 pm EST

The show’s called American Idol…not America’s best singer. Many an “Idol” in the past has not had the best of vocals. The gimmick is that the American public (regardless of age) gets to decide who they want as their idol….so what’s the problem? Everyone in the contest deserves to be there because that is what American’s have decided. Leave the kid alone…he’s there ’cause that’s what the popular vote is.

Gayle | 4/18/2007, 7:11 pm EST

As far as Sanjaya goes, He cannot sing and I have felt from moment one that it is the Indian vote that is keeping him on the show. Maybe Simon and the gang will be more careful on who they let through in the tryouts next time!!

Shantelle | 4/18/2007, 7:13 pm EST

I am so frikin tired of Sanjaya he needs to go home! It is not fair to the other contestants who actually have tallent! So quit voting for Sanjaya, PLEASE!

Donna | 4/18/2007, 7:14 pm EST

Sanjaya’s repertoire is limited. I think he does well with light jazz and pop, but other genres throw him. I don’t think he should be cut tonight — that honor should go to Chris for his crocodile tears about Virginia Tech — but I would take it very amiss if Sanjaya won this competition instead of Melinda or Jordin. He simply does not have their talent.

That said, he seems like a very nice young man, and I wish him well in his career.

pete | 4/18/2007, 7:16 pm EST

VIVA SANJAYA!!!!

savy | 4/18/2007, 7:20 pm EST

If Sanjaya doesn’t go tonite, I will scream!!!!!!!!

pete again | 4/18/2007, 7:20 pm EST

i went around to every pay phone i could find in the porland air port last night and voted for sanjaya!!
eat it, losers!!

Taylor | 4/18/2007, 7:25 pm EST

sanjaya sucks!

peter | 4/18/2007, 7:26 pm EST

you can not sing sanjaya

Sharon | 4/18/2007, 7:26 pm EST

I think it is an injustice to the other more talented performers to have Sanjaya continue in the competition. The younger generation is not voting for him due to his ability to sing, as we all know he has not an once of talent, but they are voting on his personality. The fact that week after week he can continue to get negative reviews from the Judges and viewers and continue to show grace does not make for a “great singer”. It just means the more negativeness the more he seems to thrive on it. Let’s get him off the show and applaud the singers who are truly deserving of the votes.

pete | 4/18/2007, 7:28 pm EST

dear sharon,

you are a loser.
sanjaya will win this competition and then take a shit in your easter basket.

viva sanjaya!

amanda | 4/18/2007, 7:48 pm EST

I don’t think its fair to call chris’s prayer to those impacted by the shooting at virginia tech ‘crocodile tears’. He is from that area and college age and it is more than likely that he has many friends and aquaintenes from that area. Say what you will about his singing, whih isn’t that bad at all. But don’t mock anyone who shows support for the people impacted by this.
And if america has half a lue they will send sanjaya home tonight. Most of the people I know that do vote for him don’t even wath the show, they just find out his number and vote because a website tells them its cool. I’d like to see blake or jordan win.

Erica | 4/18/2007, 7:53 pm EST

it isn’t sanjaya’s fault ppl vote for him it isn’t like he is going to say dont vote for me!!! i mean come on ppl!!!! i love Sanjaya and he isn’t going home tonight!!!

pete | 4/18/2007, 7:55 pm EST

dear jordan,

you too are also a loser. and anyone who brings up the Vtech occurance as a means to draw himself votes is so low and petty they should have to be pissed on by a class of third graders after they chugged grape juice, and then pissed on my sanjaya himself.

viva sanjaya!

linda | 4/18/2007, 8:06 pm EST

if snajaya had no talent he would not have made it through the auditions have some respect

SB | 4/18/2007, 8:14 pm EST

Sanjaya is a TV personality who happens to sing. He won’t sell records. He’s selling Sanjaya and America is buying it. A personality we love to hate because he’s a star without any talent, other than self promotion. A skinny stick boy people tune in to see how long he will last. He’s Howard Stern or Michael Jackson (has talent, no character) with a healthy self image. He’s a thin Will Ferrell fighting to survive in a singing contest. Love him or hate him, you have to watch? Talk shows get ready. Oprah?

Fanjaya | 4/18/2007, 8:29 pm EST

Get a grip people. American Idol has ZERO credibility in the music industry anyway. Why not support someone with personality since thats what pop music is all about anyway.

Sanjaya can sing better than Spears & Timberlake, and how many records have they sold?

If Sanjaya gets voted off, who in their right mind would keep watching the snore-fest?

Do the right thing America!

VOTE FOR SANJAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!

betty boop | 4/18/2007, 8:31 pm EST

Sanjaya GO HOME!
You stink as a singer and have as much stage presence as an wet blanket laying there.
How are you NOT totally embarresed?
GO HOME!

Eileen | 4/18/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Rollingstone.com — why do you have an article titled “DON’T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE SANJAYA” but you have a photo of Chris right under the headline, instead of Sanjaya? How lame is that? Are you sure you guys have editors over there?

William | 4/18/2007, 8:46 pm EST

So far this AI is so ridculas starting from the last AI. Katheryn should have won the last season not Taylor Hicks. What’s Up with that????? Simon Rules!!!!!!

Jen | 4/18/2007, 8:52 pm EST

I’m like most of the people on here. Sanja go home. It is disgusting to watch him sing and perform. I whole heartly agree with Simon last night after the sorry perfomance Sanja did last night. In my opinion he is making a fool out of Americans and the American Idol and what they stand for. Haley was so much better then he was. It is so unfair to keep him. I hadnt voted till last night and i went crazy for Phil and kept voting for him. Sanja pack you bags cause if you win thats the end of the Idol watching for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to either Phil or Meranda

sid | 4/18/2007, 8:57 pm EST

If Sanjaya is not on Idol—–it will be damn boring to watch. Forget a black idol or a white idol – we need some one else to be an AMERICAN IDOL – that is SANJAYA. HALF-ITALIAN, HALF-EAST INDIAN.

e | 4/18/2007, 9:01 pm EST

to jen, the last comment…
just make sure you’re watching the right show, cuz there’s no meranda on American Idol. Melinda, maybe…hmm?

Hilda Weber | 4/18/2007, 9:03 pm EST

Simon was right on mark when he said to Sanjaya: “It was awful”.

He has to go today. I bet the bottom three will be Phil, Chris and Sanjaya not necessarily in that order.
Melinda and Jordin were fantastic.

Hilda, Canada

Jordan | 4/18/2007, 9:32 pm EST

I absolutely hate Sanjaya. He is horrible and when he is on the stage he is just humiliating himself. It is just getting ridiculous!! He is making a fool out of himself and what American Idol stands for. He has taken away my enjoyment of watching American Idol. If he wins I will never watch this show ever again. It is just stupid to watch when he is there. Every Wednesday that I see the results show and see that Sanjaya isn’t even in the bottom 3, I feel like smacking someone. I agree with Simon completely when he said that he is like one of the bad people they saw from the auditions. Sanjaya is a karaoke singer, not an American Idol singer.

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 9:39 pm EST

sanjaya is in the bottom three but will he stay?

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 9:41 pm EST

Just be nice to him he’s young

Jordan | 4/18/2007, 9:43 pm EST

to the comment right below me,

who cares about his age?? He is a horrible singer and I think he deserves to realize that all he is doing on the stage is making a fool out of himself

Maia | 4/18/2007, 9:48 pm EST

Sanjaya – a young Michael Jackson wannabe; only unlike Michael, he’s untalented, can’t sing, can’t dance, can’t even hold a microphone, can’t dress, can’t keep a hairstylist, what’s the deal? A joke is a joke but this is bloody ridiculous! Buh-Bye, Sanjay!

Jordan | 4/18/2007, 9:54 pm EST

The joke is over. Your point has been made. NOW stop voting for Sanjaya and start voting for those that can sing. Is it fair to talented singers like LaKisha, Jordin, Melinda, and Blake. They outsing him everytime. It is not about how good your hair looks and how nice you are. It is a show that awards those that can sing and perform. Sanjaya showed us on country night that he does not have what it takes. He is a karaoke singer and nothing more. Yes he is nice and he can move around the stage but that does not make you an American Idol. It does not sell millions of records and spawn number one hits. AI needs a winner that will be sucessful and help the show prove it deserves to be on Yes, the voting needs to change but Sanjaya is not the solution. If he wins, there will be no need to change the voting. The show will be canceled. That may be what Howard Stern and some people want but that is not what I want. I am huge fan who has watched from Season One on. I have bought lots of records from Idol contestants. I love the show and the talent it generates. I want to see my show continue for a few more years.
America, please save American Idol. Vote for someone who can sing. Don’t vote Sanjaya

Bottom 3 | 4/18/2007, 9:56 pm EST

Who are the bottom 3 tonight? Who got sent home?

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 10:01 pm EST

Ok is every one happy Now the boy can rest and not be bad mouthed He is only a kid as i said before.

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 10:02 pm EST

sanjaya

Anonymous | 4/18/2007, 10:05 pm EST

sanjaya has alot of talent and is far more mature than simon he took the hits the whole season like a man I think he will do well after the show

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 10:05 pm EST

well he didn’t just put himself on the show he was put on by the so called judges and he didn’t just make himself stay on the show the people put him their so just let the kid go.

1960 fan | 4/18/2007, 10:09 pm EST

Sanjaya wasn’t the best singer but you people shouldn’t bad moouth him at least he made it.

Happyfest | 4/18/2007, 10:10 pm EST

Sanjaya is bye-bya!

SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR

bri | 4/18/2007, 10:20 pm EST

Good riddance! Sanjaya is gone finally. I can’t believe he lasted so long. I guess not everyone can see the difference between a good singer and a joke!

Ang | 4/18/2007, 10:23 pm EST

YAY!!! Sanjaya is finally over! Screw what anyone else has to say-he sucked! But I did love his hair :)

GOOOO BLAKE!!!

bri | 4/18/2007, 10:26 pm EST

True, the judges selected Sanjaya in the first place, but it is the voters who kept him there, making a fool of himself. He was an insult to the other contestants who COULD sing!

Bottom 3 | 4/18/2007, 10:29 pm EST

Who were the bottom 3 tonight?

Heather | 4/18/2007, 10:32 pm EST

How can Chris’ compassion towards his own state be called as a way to get “sympathy votes”? Sanjaya lives on those votes. So his performance wasn’t his best, but I think Simon would choke up if someone brought up a topic about England, let’s say the London bombings?

Thank god Sanjaya is finally gone. He was an insult to the other contestants.

phil | 4/18/2007, 10:54 pm EST

1) Chris R’s comment was clearly insincere; as the columnist pointed out, he basically said it in the same breath as his little hissy fit defending “nasally” as a style of singing.

2) How can you say “Something to Talk About” was a horrible song? Bonnie f-in Raitt sang it. She could fart on CD and I’d buy it. Maybe you’ve forgotten her original version, since this song gets performed each and every year on AI (and the only decent one was Fantasia). And yes, it ALWAYS bafflingly gets sung on country night. On a similar note, I dont think “When the Stars Go Blue” counts as country–the original version isn’t–only the SECOND cover of it was. (First Ryan Adams, then the Corrs/Bono, then Tim McGraw.)

Sanjaya is safe! | 4/18/2007, 10:55 pm EST

That is for sure in tonight’s american idol. He is many people’s favorite.

Jordan | 4/18/2007, 11:04 pm EST

SANJAYA IS GONEEEE!!!
thank the lord!!!

he 100% deserves to go home, and all the people who trully liked him, or trully think that he has a good voice are idiots

Noticer | 4/18/2007, 11:17 pm EST

Thank goodness canibalism isn’t legal or you all’d be eating these people for dinner instead of just verbally roasting them. Someone should put a TV camera on you while you do your job — you know, each time you steal a pack of post-it notes — and see how you do. Wait, that’s what you want anyway, right? Pathetic.

Ravi | 4/18/2007, 11:24 pm EST

SANJAYA WE ALL LOVE YOU….YOU HAVE GOOD PERSONALITY AND CAN ALSO SING WELL…..

Superst@r! | 4/18/2007, 11:26 pm EST

while it is true that sanjaya’s vocal stylings dont go anywhere near being at par with what the rest of the contestants have to offer, but to hold a mic and get yourself together for a performance in front of millions of spectators who so utterly look at him as the biggest fool on AI says a lot about the kid. Sometimes a good voice is not all that it takes to make it in the industry. It’s the soul you can’t buy, the passion that is unique talent by itself, the determination to learn that is invaluable.

Sure he needs a lot of vocal coaching and training, but once he’s done that, I bet he can really sing well. He was put there for a reason and not just to make a fool of himself. He was put there to inspire the faint spirited, to remind us that it’s not always what’s best in us that can make us winners… in this cynical cynical world, we make idols out of people based on looks first then talent, only to be reminded at the end of the day that before anyone is a singer, he is a person first.

He might not be the same caliber in talent as his fellow-contestants, but he tried and he never pretended to be more than who he is. He is comfortable keeping it real.

It’s good he’s gone in terms of competition integrity, but it’s also good that he was once there.

sanjaya gone | 4/18/2007, 11:35 pm EST

first of all prayers and thoughts go out to the familys, friends and loves one of the victims of Virg Tech and also to the parents and family of the killer. at least chris did mention it on the show so high 5 for him….
he’s gone he’s gone he’s gone, its about time, what are you people thinking voting for some one that should of been voted off the first time. better singers where voted off cause some people wanted him on there for what? his looks? ok yea he can sing some but get real, its a singing show, not the best hairdo or nice looking teen for you teeny boppers lol. i just hope that this show hasnt run its course cause of this. i have a daughter that will be 16 this dec and still she cant get on cause her age. and she does have a great voice. just found out that some one wants to hear her and record her to see how she really sounds in a recording studio. so maybe she will get her start there and not on a show that is losing it. you all need to change the way the votes are carried out. look at how grease done there voting, and maybe you all should do that kind of voting. that would be better i think God Bless you all

Everyone on the show has talent or they wouldn’t be there. It is fun to vote for the underdog, and Sanjaya has put up with a lot of undeserved criticism. He is just doing his best. Look at him every week and you should notice that he has been surprised for the last 10 weeks to still be on the show. He was unique, young, fun & Brave. Try to put yourself in his shoes, he has to perform every week, knowing Simon is going to rip him to shreds, yet has to come back for more torture. Simon had his chance to eliminate him in Hollywood, I think they intentinally kept Sanjaya this long to boost the ratings, then cut him before Simon would have to quit the show. Think about it, who benefited – American Idol did, it gave Simon more time to complain & the show has never been so popular. If you really want to do some evaluation you should turn your attention to the judges. See then who is the real child. It takes guts to get up on stage every week in front of millions.
I couldn’t even get through to vote for Sanjaya last night, I believe this was a set up and the public fell for it.

Problem? | 4/19/2007, 1:15 am EST

You’ve got to admit the kid has guts! Any 17-year old I know would have crumbled under all the pressure and the harsh criticism. Sanjaya, if you handle life as well….you’ve got it made. PS. We couldn’t have asked for a better role model for the younger population who was voting for him…he is kind, down to earth and someone who knows how to keep things in perspective. Best wishes.

Jordan:
SANJAYA IS GONEEEE!!!
thank the lord!!!

he 100% deserves to go home, and all the people who trully liked him, or trully think that he has a good voice are idiot.”

SUCK MY B**LS

Bottom 3 | 4/19/2007, 1:25 am EST

I agree, Sanjaya is an excellent role model for the youth. Better him then someone hooked on drugs.

He will do great in life. Looking forward to seeing him on tour.

Hah another week I get to post about how innaccurate Rolling Stone is. Rob Sheffield you are a joke. Unfortunantly he probably won’t read any of these posts, but i would be too ashamed to go back to this page and stare my absent minded prediction in the face too. Rolling Stone, whether it be music, politics, or culture, you prove yourself once again to be a joke.

What the hell?! “American Idol: Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Sanjaya”? Oh yeah, we don’t want our children to be kind, polite and courteous and have class. Let’s let our children idolize Simon and all he stands for: hate and making fun of and putting people down. Oh yes, that is much better to be like Simon the LOSER than be like Sanjaya. What’s wrong with you guys? That’s the problem with this country … people idolize the haters and bashers.
