  • This year’s Pulitzer Prize winners have been announced. Get the full list here. Alto saxophonist and free jazz visionary Ornette Coleman won the Pulitzer Prize for music for his 2006 album, Sound Grammar. His is the first jazz album in history to win this coveted prize.
  • A collection of rock luminaries including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, and members of Led Zeppelin, will attend a private memorial in New York tonight for Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Collins, Clapton, and Nicks are set to perform at the event, which was organized by Ertegun’s widow Mica, will be hosted by Bette Midler, and will take place at Lincoln Center.
  • Looks like Jermaine and LaToya Jackson are really going through with this Pop Dynasty reality show in which a search for the next great family of singers is conducted. CBS has picked up the program, though details about when it will be filmed/air are still hazy.
  • Lily Allen has explained, via her MySpace blog, what’s happening with her May/June US tour dates. “I am not falling apart at the seems [sic], I am not suffering with exhaustion , I am not pregnant , and I am not going to rehab ,” Allen writes. “I will be here in America , promoting the album and also starting to write the second album , which I am beyond excited about . The LA and New York shows will still be happening , and I am still playing Coachella and Bonaroo and all the other festivals .” So what is wrong with the starlet? She says she’s worried she’s been sucking lately (”I have been giving my best performances recently”) has been drinking to overcompensate and wants to rest up so she can perform better. Whatever.

the truth: you completely misunderstood me. i’m ragging on the pulitzers for essentially pulling a music award out their ass and belatedly giving it to a jazz great, when the organization primarily deals with writing and letters (which is why I compared to tom wolfe winning a golden globe, which are almost all acting awards).
coleman’s ‘at the golden circle’ is one of the best jazz albums of all time. up there with davis’ bitches brew and coltrane’s my favorite things.

hey abandoned station, when you become a musical pioneer and visionary then maybe you can talk about Ornette Coleman. But right now you should stop.

Jimbo….not all rap music is bad, just like not all rock music is good. Does Rich Boy suck terribly? Yes, but so does Nickelback. Rap is a very legitimate musical expression, but i do agree that it hasn’t been for about a decade. Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Biggie…all geniuses. Hip hop as well as rock n’ roll, with only a few modern exceptions, is dead.

Clapton, Collins, Nicks, Led Zeppelin………….that sure sounds alot better than the garbage we have to listen to today. Whoever decided rap music was good for anything besides making normal people want to puke was off-base. The music of today in no way compares to the examples mentioned above. In fact, most of todays music is just plain S—’.

Ornette Coleman gets a pulitzer? What’s next, is Tom Wolfe gonna get a Golden Globe?

Re: The Ertegun memorial. That list is nothing. Imagine the pilgrimmage for when Clive Davis goes off to that final A&R meeting in the sky.

Oh, other Jacksons. Face it, no matter how hard you try, you will not be as talented or bizarre as Michael…

spellcheck Lily…and RS (read the last two sentences in the last news nugget), and always, always myself…
