Lunchtime Poll: Put On Your Orange Jumpsuit

4/13/07, 12:06 pm EST

Johnny Cash

Listening to a great live album is a painful experience. You’re super psyched that the recording exists, that you can forever revisit that night, but unless you were physically present — participating in the cheering and cat calling and general rocking out — you must always deal with the fact that you weren’t actually there and can only really imagine what it was like. You are able to go back in time and be present, in the audience, for the recording of your favorite live album ever. What record do you choose and what do you wear to the show?

Led Zeppelin “How the West Was Won”. California summer of ‘72…the wine and weed flowing…I don’t think it can be topped.

The songs off of “From the Muddy Banks of the Whishkah” by Nirvana that were from “Live and Loud”. Nirvana at New Years, what an awesome show that was.

This won’t go down massively well, but mine’s ‘And All That Could Have Been’ by Nine Inch Nails. It’s very cleaned up, but every single tune just blows the album version out of the water. Just listen to the first track, Terrible Lie. It’s a monster, and it only gets better from there. If I want to listen to Closer, that’s the version I go for….

Ouroboros | 4/13/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Pink Floyd – “Is There Anybody Out There? (The Wall Live)”. Not a great live album really, but I would die to have been there at one of those concerts. Of course I would wear all black clothes with a hammer logo on the suirt, and if I was lucky enough, one of those masks that the audiences received.

Queen at Wembley, 1986. That would’ve been amazing.

Second place, maybe the Freddie tribute in ‘92. There’s bands I love more than Queen, but none that I think would’ve put on a more spectacular live show.

Brett | 4/13/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Dylan’s 1966 Royal albert Hall.

Not my favorite live album ever, but it has huge historical significance, and I’d love to see Dylan saying “fuck you” to everyone.

Maybe the Stone’s “Gimme Shelter” free concert at Altamont. Violent as crap. Maybe try to stop the guy from getting killed.

My favorite live album;s either Allman Bros.’ Fillmore East or Cheap Trick’s At Budokan.

Saw Jimi at Woodstock! Nothing comes close to that and I have seen it all…Cream at the garden in 2005 was moving…the WHO opening for the Doors at the Singer bowl was raw…Jagger and the Stones with Justin Timberlake doing a duet on Miss You in Toronto…Springsteen at the Jazzfest last April was touching…McCartney and Bennett doing a duet at Neil’s Bridge Benefit several years ago was heartfelt…but Jimi…He is the MAN! Maybe this year’s Crossroads fest will be on my wall of fame…

somebody | 4/13/2007, 1:40 pm EST

I would absolutely love to see “Bullet in a Bible”.

Evan | 4/13/2007, 1:47 pm EST

Nirvana “Unplugged in New York,” or a Foo Fighters albums called “Brain Damage,” which I think was an import or a bootleg of a concert they did in Leeds around “Nothing Left to Lose” time. They didn’t play “Break Out, (I’m not sure if it had come out yet) but that’s all.

I would sit in at the studio session that the 13th Floor Elevators did in 1967. The band added crowd noise and passed it off as a live album. They are a favorite band, and I’d see if I could sing back-up or do anything to get on the record. That way I could be live on a non-live album that everyone thinks is live.

Rod | 4/13/2007, 10:07 pm EST

1) Pink Floyd, “Is There Anybody Out There” – THE WALL LIVE
2) Black Sabbath, “Live At Last” – anybody who saw the original Sabbath live said it was like watching rock Gods in action.
3) Phish, “Live in Brooklyn” – Instead of the muddy, miserable mess that was Coventry.
4) The Smiths, “The Butterfly Collector” – Oh, to have seen The Smiths on their third-ever live gig!
5)Sublime, “Stand by Your Van” – Just imagine seeing Sublime live!

voodoochile | 4/13/2007, 11:57 pm EST

the allman brothers band, live at the fillmore east. that show just went all night and is one of the greatest live albums iv ever heard. also duane allmans solo during In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is one of the greatest solos of all time and the fastest trill iv ever heard

Sophie | 4/13/2007, 11:58 pm EST

I would defintely see any Led Zeppelin show (especially those in the mid-70’s), and the Allman Bros. at the Fillmore East 1970 (which still blows my mind everytime i listen to it). I saw the Allman Bros. recently, and they were absolutely AMAZING!!!! I can only imagine how it was back in 1970.

Martin | 4/14/2007, 12:16 am EST

Midnight Oil – 1984 “Oils On The Water” concert on Goat Island, Sydney harbour. Peter Garrett dissed the French and nuclear testing in the pacific something fierce.

I’d be the one wearing the freakin’ huge grin from ear-to-ear !

nurserock1 | 4/14/2007, 12:28 am EST

The Who-Live at Leeds
The album absolutely captured whatever that “IT” is that the Who have…wow!
It was recorded with four microphones in a school cafeteria by the Who’s sound engineer Bob Pridden.
Just incredible….and they say that the show the night before was recorded and was even better
but someone lost it!
Of course I would dress like a Mod…

KURGAN | 4/14/2007, 12:40 am EST

Since no one else will admit it, I’d say Bob Seger at Cobo Hall in ‘75 for the “Live Bullet” album. I’d be wearing a huge smile!

pspjr | 4/14/2007, 2:05 am EST

Iron Maiden at “Rock in Rio.”

i’m old enough to be your dad so iwas actually at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, on halloween night 1968. iwas wearing buffalo sandels blue jeans and a stooges tshirt it got hot as hell in there and it was the first concert i attended that the crowd jumped up in mass and heaved up and down with the beat.Wayne Kramer and Sonic Smith’s guitars were ear shaterring

mr. kenny | 4/14/2007, 3:53 am EST

the live album i’m talking about is Kick out the Jams by the MC5 it was an eye opening night. i didn’t think the intensity of this show could be matched, but 2 weeks later across town i was fortunate to see the stooges at the height of their power

And after that, I’d stop by Folsom Prison to catch “Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart”.

16 clumsy + shy | 4/14/2007, 10:44 am EST

Wait a minute….I know it would definately be Green Day, but there was that one concert around the “Insomniac” era where they had a huge mud-fight with the crowd and the bassist got his teeth knocked out!! Back when Billie had blue hair….yeah. I’d give up anything go to that. I’ve got Bullet in a Bible on DVD anyway.

1. Woodstock
2. Allman Brothers Band – Fillmore East – I was born several days after that show and not too far from the Fillmore.
3.Cheap Trick – At Budokan would have been a good one. Great music and thousands of Asian Ladies.
4. Monterey Pop Festival
5. Grateful Dead – Either at the Avalon Ballroom or the Fillmore West. Pigpen Lives!!!
6.The Sex Pistols – Any of the American shows. Love a good train wreck. Once in a while.
7. Velvet Underground – Anywhere in NYC would have been great.
8. Cream – Royal Albert Hall Show – The last one in 68.
9. The Band – The Last Waltz Show.
10. The Stooges – In Detroit – late sixties.

JLI | 4/15/2007, 1:17 am EST

Just thought of two more

Bob Dylan and The Hawks – I doubt I would have been booing because they decided to plug in.

Altamont – For several reasons
1. Gram Parsons
2. Seeing Marty Balin imitate Ali
3. Get my head beaten over with a pool stick by some 300 lb. Hell’s Angel. Ooch! That hurts!!
4. Seeing Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman stone faced while fans get beaten up around them.
5. I would had worn nothing to this concert. I would not had been out of place.
