Dylan’s European Shows Inspire Fantasizing

4/13/07, 11:11 am EST

Bob Dylan

If the first two dates from Bob Dylan’s upcoming North American tour are any indication, this one’s gonna be a doozy. On July 7th and 8th he’s hitting up the Casino Rama in Orillia Ontario – a fine establishment that also boasts double-shows from the likes of Toto, America, Art Garfunkel and something called “Music of Led Zeppelin Symphony.” Those all get two shows, but somehow 2/5 of Styx managed to eek out a third night. What gives?

Dylan shows are always better in dives than the arenas fans had to endure late last year. The man truly shines at State Fairs, casinos, and the occasional parking lot of some random bar in Kentucky.

As for which songs he’s likely to play, consider the European portion of the tour, which kicked off late last month. Over the course of 12 shows he’s already played 46 different songs.

What rarities are you hoping he’ll pull out when he comes to the states this summer? Here’s hoping for “Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat),” “I&I,” “Tight Connection To My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love)” and “Idiot Wind.”

Dylan is back to playing guitar on this tour. Sweet!

pspjr | 4/13/2007, 11:31 am EST

His last tour was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. And I saw him AFTER Katrina.

Andy B | 4/13/2007, 11:41 am EST

Apart from adding in nsongs from Modern Times, Dylan’s been doing the same songs for the last couple years. It’s great that he did 44 differant tunes in 11 shows, but none were really rare or that special – at least for the folks who go back and see him year after year.

Rick Dula | 4/13/2007, 11:41 am EST

Go for the gold Bobby!!!

bob | 4/13/2007, 11:49 am EST

Subterranean Homesick Blues
Moonshiner (yeah right)
Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat

But, as long as he is playing the guitar it will be better than last year. Oh and Bob, I know you don’t like to enunciate, but please, please, just try a little.

Steve | 4/13/2007, 11:53 am EST

I’ll second “Idiot Wind”. Also, how about: “Dark Eyes”, “Jokerman”, “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window”, “Most Of The Time”, “Caribbean Wind”, “Black Diamond Bay”, and “Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands”.

Hey Rolling Stoners,

I just got my wheelchair back from the shop, and it is running great…just in time for the tour.
I plan on bringing some old friends along this time out.
Folks like Joan Baez, Tom Petty, Woody Guthrie, Jimi Hendrix, Napolean and Socrates!
Have you heard my sons band, the Counting Crowflowers…they are really average.
Also, I think that robots are stealing my luggage!?
Peace

Robert Zimmerman | 4/13/2007, 12:50 pm EST

I actually am dead.
I died back in 1983 in an aerobics accident involving Jane Fonda and a bucket of cream cheese.
Anyway, the Dylan that’s been making records and touring since then was secretly cloned by the CIA.
I think they spiked my DNA with some weird stuff, because I keep thinking that Mr. Bush is doing a fine job and I have an uncontrollable urge to buy Haliburton stock.
Anywho…I will be playing most of my old songs in a country western style, plus some duets with Kelly Pickler and Carrie Underwood.
It’s all groovy

Ol’ Bob should play it smart, accept the fact that he sucks & can’t sing, & then be the opening act for somebody with more talent, perhaps Sonjaya from Idol.

Jason Moss | 4/13/2007, 9:38 pm EST

To all those who dis Dylan as washed up:

“She said ‘you can’t repeat the past’
I said ‘you can’t?’ Whadd’ya mean ya can’t?
Of course you can’”

Mike | 4/13/2007, 11:10 pm EST

Whatever he plays is what counts. He plays and that’s all that matters. He’s in the most creative phase since the mid 60s so we’re fortunate to live in these days. He knows better than any of us so what we say is just goofy gibberish. His current period is what proves, yet again, he’s more significant than any other wash up from the 60s… yeah, I’m looking at you Paul. And his prices are way more reasonable than yours.

Our Lady of Bob | 4/14/2007, 1:11 am EST

I don’t care what he plays…
I’d go to watch him sit on a rocking chair and read. to himself.
I wonder if I could sit on his lap…
well, I’m probably a little old for him.
;)

if I had to pick it would be visions of johanna, house of the rising sun, most of the time, and maybe something else from Oh Mercy… what was it you wanted.
oh god, what a trap… then there is this, then that, and that… ballad of a thin man, restless farewell, to ramona, gypsy gal… (can’t remember the name right now,) ring them bells, knocked out loade… yeah, that one would be nice.
some covers… Lord Have mercy, I give up… back to sitting on a chair quietly reading to himself will work for me.

mr. dylan | 4/14/2007, 3:21 am EST

marty p should play it smart and shut up before his keepers find out he’s on the keyboard again. does the P stand for philistine?

olias | 4/14/2007, 5:43 am EST

Hi S Train

FYI he did John Brown on Wednesday in Glasgow – it was really sweet – a show stopper!

How about an old tune from ‘63, “Let Me Die in My Footsteps”, which concludes so beautifully and is timeless (as so many of his tunes are):
…If I had rubies and riches and crowns
I’d buy the whole world and change things around
I’d throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of a past history.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let me smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run
Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep in your souls.
And you’ll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground.

sal69 – you could be in luck – Bob has done “Girl of the North Country” twice already this tour.

Johnny | 4/14/2007, 12:21 pm EST

Dylan blows hot and cold from tour to tour. I’ve given up on him so many times since I became a fan in 1965. I gave up in ‘73. I gave up again in ‘78. Again in ‘86 and yet again in ‘91. I came close in ‘03-’05, seeing maybe 5 or 6 shows, some ok, some pretty poor. Last time I saw him, in October, it was a complete wash. I said, “That’s it, no more unless he’s right around the corner in a small hall.” Now, I’m listening to these Euro shows, and they’re FANTASTIC! Nowhere I’d rather be. Bring it on Bob! He’s the ultimate survivor.

Farewell, Angelina is a drop-dead beautiful one.

I’ll take Series of Dreams, I Shall be Free (with updated references), even Santa Fe. Oh, and as others have mentioned, She’s Your Lover Now(worth even the steep price Persain Drunkard mentioned). Oh, and my right nut would have to go to hear You Changed My Life, his best spiritual song. But not both. Even die-hards have limits.

- anything off of Desire

weird list, huh?

Jonathan | 4/14/2007, 10:17 pm EST

Everybody seems to hate his last tour, but when I saw Dylan a few months back, did alot of the songs you guys mention, plus all the ones nobody wants to mentiong because you think they’re too obvious. Maybe I just got lucky.

Thom Perry and The Hitbreakers | 4/15/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Thom Perry and his band make “great wind.” I remeber them back in ‘87 then in ‘97 Thom wrote the klasick “Don’t how to feels to be you&me.” I know I wrote that “crap.” While Dre made his hits wit Snoop Dogg when hiz name was “Snoop Doggy Dog.” Till Bad Boy took him to tha cleaners….Dylan should tour with Thom… Thom is a Dylan wanna be anyway! He plays the Monica and like Big Popper of Blues Travlers…

scooby doo | 4/15/2007, 11:17 pm EST

it pains me greatly to see (i.e. hear) what dylan’s done to his voice with cigs, alc, and drugs.

long live dylan

scooby doo | 4/15/2007, 11:18 pm EST

also, the cat talkin bout dylan bustin out the axe holds my sentiments exactly

The Greek | 4/16/2007, 6:56 am EST

Well, I don’t see the point of this. T saw Dylan Live in Brussels a few weeks ago and i “hoped” he’d play Boots of Spanish Leather. He did but of course it had nothing to do with the recording. It always sounds so different live and you cannot sing along. It’s great but still why wich for your favorite song since you might not even recognise the intro.

Love Bob
